san jose police say the officers had no choice, the man was coming towards them with a knife but the family says he was battling depression. ktvu's azenith smith is in san jose with more on a 911 call that was made just before that shooting. >> reporter: frank, family and friends are coming to terms with his death. a loved one called a suicide hot line because they were worried about his well being. >> a good kid. a great kid. he needed help. we begged him to get help. >> reporter: her daughter was set to be married to philip watkins. now he leaves behind a two-year- old daughter. >> they shot him and i begged them not to shoot him. he needed help. they could have tased him. that is what they could have done. >> reporter: 5:00 p.m. last night san jose police received a 911 call from a home

in downtown. the caller claiming a man armed with a knife was breaking in to the house. police determined it was philip watkins who called 911. police capture the moment officers saw a man with a blade running towards them. he failed to drop the knife. they opened fire. he died at the hospital. police stated both officers each with 8 years experience responded in self-defense. it is unclear if they knew about the solto the suicide help line. witnesses told them after the fact he was battling depression. >> i was shocked. >> he says he was a running back on the football team in 2012. a stand out who graduated from san jose high school. >> i feel real sad. there are young men -- he had a

lot going for him when he played here. it is a shock. >> reporter: it is unclear if the officers received training on how to deal with suspects suffering from mental illness. both offenses have been placed on paid administrative leave. >> azenith smith in san jose, thank you. police in antioch release surveillance video hoping someone will recognize a daring thief. look at the video. it shows a burglary in action monday morning at the wendy's on "a" street. you can see a man enter the restaurant and go for the tv. he yanks it off the wall and walks out the door of the restaurant. if you have any information about this case police would like to hear from you. a house fire in pleasant hill claimed the lives of 5 pets. firefighters rescued one small dog. it was treated but another dog and four cats died in the fire.

the flames broke out before noon in the kitchen of a home. no one was home at the time. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. emergency helicopter crews came to the aid of two surfers who got caught in rip tides. the fire department said they plucked one man from 8-foot surf after 10:00 a.m. this morning. another man made his way over the rocks on the beach where emergency crews evaluated him. two dozen ports along the west coast including the port of oakland are shut down tonight. this is the labor dispute that drags officer. they failed to reach an agreement but the consequences are unknown. what we know is right now shipping activity at 29 ports is suspended. workers are scheduled to return tomorrow before shutting down again for the the next three
