i think oakland downtown and sfo have the best opportunity. some of that fog is there but it's very shall local. there's still a slight component of a normally breeze or easterly breeze. 40 is on the temps for most. 54 in san francisco. low 50s antioch and brentwood. antioch 75 yesterday. 74 today. alamo cool along with danville. fog is there. again, i think right by the water's edge, that's your best bet for a cooldown. the water temps are so warm. it's tough to cool down. patchy coast fog. otherwise it will be clear. still 70s. warm inland, slight cooldown over by the coast. here's sal with an update on what so far has been quiet unless something has changed. >> reporter: pretty quiet even when we've had crashes, we haven't had any backups. we're also here to let you know that traffic 80 westbound looks good between the carquinez

bridge and the macarthur maze. we are a not expecting slowdowns. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, it looks good. remember that b.a.r.t. and uniare doing saturday schedules today. we have other agencies on a weekend or holiday schedule today. you might as well check with the agencies. parking meeters in san francisco -- meters in san francisco will be enforced. bring your money. read the signs the don't get a ticket. 880 southbound between hayward and fremont, traffic is light. most of the maps are green. that means traffic is near or at the speed limit. 7:03. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. oakland fires needed more than an hour to put out a school fire near the rockridge b.a.r.t. station. the flames were first reported about 2:00 a.m. ktvu fox 2 reporter cara lui is live at the school and said there is a lot of damage to the school cafeteria. good morning, cara. >> reporter: good morning.

there sure is. right now you can see there's a couple police officers standing by at the scene. they had been standing by as fire investigators were standing up. now they are waiting on school security. someone driving on the freeway called 911 just before 2:00 a.m. this turned into a two-alarm fire that burned the cafeteria. firefighters says flames extended up into the attic and crews had to cut holes to get the building vent. they say it looks like it started in the kitchen area and they are looking into unusual circumstances surrounding this fire. >> first arriving engine company found one of the doors was open to the calf tear -- to the cafeteria which leads us to believe someone got in there before us. the fire is under investigation but that's concerning, that the door was open. >> reporter: firefighters say there is well over $500,000 of

damage. the cafeteria is gutted. unusable. no school because of the holiday. that will give school officials an extra day to figure out how to deal with this and how any of this and all of this will -- will impact students. 7:04. san jose firefighters are still investigating the cause of a fire that roared through a building that housed classic cars. it happened early saturday morning and 24 hours later, firefighters were still putting ought hot spots. the -- out hot spots. the building was home to a car up poultry and stereo shop -- upholstery and stereo shop. there was a million dollars in damage. a security guard was at the shop before the fire broke out and returned yesterday to collect some of this -- some of his belongings. >> terrible. i'm still alive.

>> his daughter's fish collection was there. all of the fish survived. oakland fire crews had to fight some tight spaces and climb 12 flights of stairs before they could get to the flames last night at this fire. no one was hurt. investigators say the fire was probably started by an overheated piece of electrical equipment. port operations are suspended again today in oakland and 28 other west coast ports. the pacific maritime ocean which represents shipping companies an terminal operators shut down operations show it does not have to pay dock workers weekend or holiday pay. it stopped nighttime work last month. the association and longshoremen's union have been in contract talks for fine months but there are still several issues unresolved. when president obama was in the bay area, he asked labor secretary tom perez to help the two sides reach an agreement.

7:06. they are calling it one of the biggest bank breaches ever. there is a new report that says more than a billion dollars has been stolen from banks around the world by cyber hackers. brian flores is in the newsroom. how did they do it? >> very astonishing. by house easily hackers were able to do it. the new york times were able to receive an advanced copy of the report. they say this is likely the most sophisticated cyberattack the world has seen. the report prepared by a security firm in russia explains how they did it. the hackers would spend what looked like an innocent e-mail to a bank ploy. would look like it was sent to somebody by the wank. they would open it up and that would unleash malway. the malware can record key strokes and send back attackers camera still shots or video of

how key bank employees would make money transfers. hackers would follow the same procedures so it would look like nothing was unusual. hackers would limit their theft to $10 million before moving onto noer bank. report said this has been going on since 2013. and because of nondisclosure agreements, the banks were not named. the report comes on the heels of president obama's visit to stanford talking about cybersecurity. he signed an order on sharing cyber threats. the president says internet security remains a top priority. >> when consumers share their information with companies they desoifn to know it will be protected -- deserve to mow it to know it -- to know it it is protected. >> the report says the hackers

would transfer money to fake accounts in the u.s. and china and other times, the hackers could access atms to dispense cash for others to pick up. according to the report, most of the banks targeted are in russia, the u.s., germany and china and the ukraine. >> very interesting. >> brian flores we'll talk to you later. >> all right. 7:09. well, here is something different, the ceo of twitter took to twitter today to announce he hurt himself in a skiing accident. he posted this photo to his 1.4 million followers. it shows him in a sling with the hume cap chun -- with the humorous caption. twitter has not commented on how seriously he was hurt. later today in san francisco, a push to legalize recreational use of marijuana in california, it will continue with the international cannabis

business conference at the hyatt regency. supporters want california to join four other states in making it legal for adults to buy and use marijuana recreationally. activists are drawing up 2016 ballot initiatives, they have to have it in. they have until august to submit it. the clock is ticking now as the funding for the department of homeland security is just about to run out. but members of congress are far from making a deal. on fox news sunday, house speaker john boehner put the blame on senate democrats. >> the house has done its job under the constitution. it's time for the senate to do their job. i've got a tough job here. >> he went on to say he's prepared to allow the department of homeland security to shut down if the senate doesn't come up with a funding bill of its own. last month, the house passed a bill but it includes provisions to block the president's immigration policy. no chance senate democrats will vote for that. congress is off this week

when they come back next week, they will only have four days to work out a deal before that deadline. 7:10. egypt has launched airstrikes against islamic state targets in libya. after the terror group released a video showing the beheading of 21 egyptian coptic christians. the military says the war planes targeted isis training camps before returning safely. this is video of them taking off. the military says the strikes are to avenge the egyptian blood shed. the white house says the barbarity of the islamic state group knows no bounds. the video released yesterday shows men in orange jump suits being led along a beach, each accompanied by a masked militant. the men are forced to kneel and one addresses the camera in english and then they are

7:14. the faa will investigate why a single engine plane made a crash landing on a hayward golf course yesterday. the plane had just taken off from the hayward airport when it lost power. the pilot brought the plane down near the 10th hole of the skywest golf course. no golfers were close by. the pilot was not hurt. but the underside of the plane is damaged. a small amount of fuel leaked out. a new study released today shows american teenagers just are not getting enough sleep. the research published in pede at tricks involved 300,000 teens -- pediatrics involved 300 teens. they say they get an average of seven hours of sleep or less each night. experts generally recommend nine or ten for 15 to 19-year- olds. these results are raising concerns about the impact of sleep deprivation on teens'

health and academics. researchers say the amount of sleep teens get has been steadily decross hing over the past few years. >> i would think they would want more sleep. >> yes. this is president's day. government surveyors will reveal the washington monument is actually 10 inches shorter than what everybody thought. the monument honoring the nation's first president was built in 1884. as first it was measured at 555 feet and 5 inches but a new measurement puts it at 554 feet and 7 inches tall. now, national surveyors say the monument did not shrink but the original base point used back until 1800s it's now 9 inches below ground level because the plaza around the base of the monument, it's been built up over the many years. surveyors took the new measurement while the monument was being restored after all that quake is suffered in in 2011. all right.

commute likewise for the carquinez or the benicia bridges. back to the desk. gorgeous weather, plus free admission made muir woods a very popular destination over the weekend. they are expecting huge crowds again today because it's a holiday. tara moriarty is in marin county this morning. and tara, not everyone's happy about the big crowds. >> reporter: no. we'll get to that in a second. but admission is usually $7 but this today as well as the entire weekend, it was free and that caused a massive traffic jam. similar to congestion that we saw back on martin luther king day, the last time that a national park was free. now, people had to park more than a mime away -- a mile away. the freebie made muir woods a big draw. the nearby parking lot only holds 150 cars. so those spots were done by 9:30 yesterday morning.

rangers said there were about 4,000 people here saturday. this is nothing new to neighbors who live near here. they are so angry about the traffic, they have asked a limit on the number of visitors allowed into muir woods. the cost goes back to up $7 for admission. there is a push to push it up to $10. so far, a pretty spectacular morning. we just watch the sunrise come over the bridge. i'm tara moriarty back to you. >> what a place to be. we'll talk to you later. it is 7:34. danish police have arrested two men suspected of helping the gunman who carried out the two shooting attacks over the weekend in copenhagen. the gunman was killed in a

shootout with the s.w.a.t. team yesterday. he opened fire at a culture center with a swedish cartoonist known for his controversial depictions of the broff -- the prophet mohammed. hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil in paris honoring the victims in denmark. the memorial was held outside of the danish embassy. the ambassador came out and thanked everyone. just last month, 17 people were killed in terror attacks in france. the israeli prime minister is reacting to the shooting by encouraging european jews to move to israel in a mass immigration. prime minister benjamin netanyahu said jews continue to be murdered on european soil just for being jewish. he says they deserve protection which he believes can be

provided in israel. the security guard who was killed in the copenhagen shooting was jewish. in last month's attacks in paris, four french jews were killed. 7:35. a makeshift memorial in san jose that includes flowers, teddy bears and candles. it's still growing in memory of a security guard shot and killed over the weekend. it happen during a robbery at a liquor store on north capitol avenue. katie utehs is joining us live with more on the search for the shooter. katie? >> reporter: well, what makes this crime especially shocking, the security guard shot and killed over cigars. i will show you the memorial behind me. as you mentioned, it is large and the candles are still illuminated this morning, even though it's hard to see now that it's daylight. at this shopping complex, there are surveillance cameras. and police are hoping that will help them identify the robbers.

35-year-old manny, the security guard, interrupted a robbery at the lick ear for less store located next to the club. witnesses say someone inside the getaway car fired several shots, striking manny. he died at the hospital the people who knew the security guard said he was ales willing to help others. >> the homeless people used to come here. he would give them food. help people around here that can't buy. he would talk to everybody. >> reporter: officers say the robber tried to steal cigars and only got away with a little bit of cash. the linger store has turned over the surveillance footage at this point. police hoping to get a getaway description for the vehicle and also for the robbers. we have put in calls to san jose pd. there is an officer in the area. however, they say there are not any updates to share yet. >> thank you.

7:37. if you missed last night's deadline to sign up for health insurance, get ready to pay a big fine. the deadline was midnight but as long as you started the application process before that deadline you now have until friday to finish your enrollment. across the bay area, events were held to help make sure people were signed up in time and many people took advantage of it. >> when people can't get the care they need, that frankly becomes a population health issue. this is about californians getting healthier, staying healthier sand living longer -- and living longer lives. >> if you didn't sign up in time, the penalty is $325 for adults or 2% of your income, whichever is higher. it's $162 for children. usa today reports nearly 500,000 people had trouble signing up for coverage through the affordable care act because of a glitch in the system on saturday. the issue prevented some people

from getting their income verified to enroll. the problem was fixed ahead of the deadline but that lead to a lot of people signing up at the very last minute. 7:38. here on "mornings on 2," and a carjacker in concord who tried to steal a car yesterday morning ended up getting quite a surprise. it happened earlier sunday morning on monument boulevard. police say the car owner got into his car and he found a man sitting in the passenger seat with a gun. apparently right in the middle of burglarizing the car. that man forced the owner to drive him to a nearby location where he demanded money and kicked the owner out of the car. police say the carjacker tried to drive away but finally gave up. he didn't know how to drive a stick shift. 7:39. it's taken months but the faa has released its proposed rules for the commercial use the drones. drones must we less than 55 pound. can -- weigh less than 55

pounds. cannot fly hisher than 500 feet in the area or faster than 100 miles an hour. and they cannot drop things. operators must keep sight of their machine at all times as well as be at least 17 years old and pass a test. drone advocates say this is a step forward for companies that want to use them for aerial photography, mapping, inspecting bridges and monitoring crops. >> although there are tremendous number of operations which can happen in those areas and under those operating characteristics today, pizza delivery and getting packages likely is not. >> amazon has been testing service to deliver light packages but that would not be allowed up the proposed rules. experts say it could take two more years to get the regulations finalized and commercial drones flying lee legally -- legally. starting this week, passengers on some jetblue planes can pay for food or

7:43. fire crews had to use chain saws to cut up and remove a 30- foot tree that came crashing down in san francisco's lower haight. it fell yesterday afternoon blocking both directions of the traffic on busy vididaro street. >> i was standing working looking on the street and this massive tree fell down, knocked down the lines and barely missed a car. it's a miracle nobody was hurt or a car bus wasn't crunched.

>> it took about two hours to fix the power lines and restore muni service. no word yet on what caused the tree to fall. squaw valley ski resort will not hold its world company race next month for skiers and snowboarders. not enough snow. squaw valley usually gets 450 inches of snow each year. but because of the drought, there's only been 140 inches of snow this winter at the summit. the event had been scheduled for march 4th through march 8th. well, while we have the problem of not enough snow, the east coast, boy, they are dealing with way too much snow. pam cook in the studio now to look at some of the damage it's causing and how travelers at sfo are reacting, pam. >> so dramatic, the difference. it's warm and dry here. but the snow is setting records in new england. now the area is dealing with some of the coldest temperatures in years. another foot of snow fell in

boston yesterday. totals there now about 7 feet of snow in less than a month. forecasters say windchills could reach 20 degrees below zero and some people say all they can do is laugh. >> i am just laughing at it and looking at is the silver or the positive side of it and believe i'm seeing a weather event that probably won't happen for another 50 years. >> the heavy snow caused a roof to collapse on a house in quincey, massachusetts. fortunately, nobody was hurt. we did meet up with travelers at sfo. some are trying to get to the east coast. others are purpose.avoiding it. >> i have to go from l.a. to philadelphia and i have to be there tonight. >> and? >> and i hope i get there. >> we're gonna go to west palm beach. >> away from boston? >> far away. >> what do you think about what's going on? >> it's unbelievable. it's mind blowing. >> we did see some flights particular, i will to the boston area, canceled. many delays as well at sfo.

and certainly on the east coast. a lot of cancellations. and flight delays expected. steve paulson just told me. it's supposed to be about 3 below at boston logan airport. you know there will be a lot of de-icing and clearing the runways. certainly expect some delays if you do have that travel in and around the east coast. it's not over yet. another storm heading across the midwest and is expected to hit the northeast by tomorrow night. dave? >> can you believe that? >> no. the east least seven people were hurt -- at least seven people were hurt after their plane hit turbulence from new jersey to hawaii on valentine's day. once on the ground, four flight attendants and a teenaged girl needed hospital treatment. two others were treated at the scene. parts of hawaii were under a high wind advisory over the weekend, creating trouble not just in the air but also on the ground. in honolulu, powerful winds ripped the roofs off about 70 homes.

a huge amount of debris left behind. firefighters say somebody driving on the freeway called 911 just before 2:00 a.m. this turned into a two-alarm fire that burned the cafeteria of clair maurnt middle school. firefighters say flames extended up into the attic and crews had to cut holes in the ceiling and roof to let smoke vent from the building. investigators are looking into what they call an unusual circumstance. they found the cafeteria door open. they say it looks like the fire started in the kich inarea and caused extensive smoke, water and fire damage. >> from if school was cans -- if school was cancelled, i don't want to alarm everybody. the fire was located in the kitchen area. and there are other ways we could provide lunch. >> and again, you heard the

the -- citiers -- skiers and snowboarders. squaw valley usually gets 450 inches every year but because of the drought and the warm weather, there's lenly been 140 inches at the -- only been 140 inches at the summit. people in hawaii are cleaning up after a severe wind storm over the weekend. in honolulu, winds up to 50 miles per hour ripped off the roofs of almost 70 homes. the high winds also toppleled trees, thousands of people also lost power on oahu as well as maui and the big island. most of the power has been restored. but the high winds cause problems in the air. at least seven people were injrned after their plane hit major turbulence on a valentine's day flight from new jersey to hawaii. the plane landed safely in

honolulu. once on the ground, four flight attendants and a girl needed hospital treatment. an unwanted valentine's day surprise on an alaskan airlines flight. the flight was delayed when a passenger said a scorpion stung her. she was treated at the airport. the oregon state men's basketball them were on the flight. they were told the scorpion hitched a ride in the carry-on bag of a passenger who had just been to mexico. 8:46. want to check in with sal and boy, very different from your typical monday morning commute today how is the east shore? >> looking good if you are driving from richmond over to the macarthur maze, oakland, it will take you about 18 minutes not a bad commute. it's looking very good if you are driving anywhere in the east bay right now. we can take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, i know that not everyone has the day off.

weather is. some of the worst kind is the freab -- freezing rain. the while -- the windchills were incredibly cold. they are on the water. 8 below in hartford, new york city, 1 below. central park was 4 degrees. the rain to the south and then you have the snow to the north but in between is the mixed precipitation or the freezing rain which is going through parts of tennessee. that can be the worst kind of weather. you can snap trees, power lines. that's also heading into part, of the carolinas. it's snow to the north and that's heading back to the northeast. it won't stop. don't be surprised if this pattern goes into march. for us, the fog is there. no rain in sight. things can change. nothing on the ten-day outlook. 60s, 70s, maybe coming down a
