of claremont middle school. the damage happened inside the cafeteria which is separate from the rest of the school. beyond the yellow tape. within the pahour school officials announced they will be open tomorrow. >> reporter: firefighters got the call before 2:00 a.m. this morning. flames engulfed the cafeteria and shot through the roof. >> we had heavy fire from one side of the building. on the interior. when crews made entry the fire extended up into the attic. >> reporter: firefighters kept the fire contained but as the photographs show the cafeteria is in ruins. in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. . >> most of the equipment is ruined. we won't be able to use it again. >> reporter: firefighters are calling the fire suspicious and unusual. they don't know how the fire started but there is evidence that someone tried to put it

with them. they make up 10% of egypt's population. heather holmes will have more reaction from members tonight at 10:00 p.m. a new report says cyber hackers stole a billion dollars from banks around the world. one of the biggest bank breaches ever. a cyber security group says the hackers got into the system and sent an e-mail from one bank employee to the other. the person who opens it unleashes malware into the bank computer system, it records key strokes, screen shots and other bank information and sends it back to the hackers and they use that information to steal money from the bank. they would limit the theft to $10 million before move on to another -- moving on to another

a retired engineer who tell on -- fell on hard times. he acted 2 investigates after he received a frustrating follow up notice from the agency that was supposed to help him. >> they said they ran out of money. you are not getting paid. period. >> reporter: it turns out the funding had been declanning for several -- [ audio difficulties ] -- declining for several -- [ audio difficulties ] >> reporter: there is not nearly enough to go around. by the states' estimate, 7% of all the people eligible for assistance get the help they need. what we didn't expect to find is that some agencies aren't using all of the funds -- using all of the funds they get each year. we will have more tonight at 10:00 p.m. three members of congress are weighing in on a large medical marijuana dispensary in oakland. they are in a battle with the federal government that wants

spreading. san jose, firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a weekend fire that roared through a building housing classic cars. it started saturday morning. the building housed a stereo shop. it destroyed classic cars worth a million dollars. a team of girls from oakland competed in a coating competition. ktvu's christien kafton shows us they have spent the past two days building apps they hope will make an impiaget all over the -- impact all over the world. >> reporter: tapping, clicking and coding. the girl's hack-a-thon. the hame is to get girls and women to use technology to solve the problems they face. in this case to help them define a safe space in the real world or cyberspace. >> the girls have 24 hours, the

challenge is, to create safe spaces or increase access for girls to have access to safe spaces. >> reporter: it is part of a competition working towards the same goal. in oakland three teams of girls started saturday working two 12 hour days developing their idea, and then writing the thousands of lines of code to bring it to life. she says her team developed an app called talk it out. aimed at helping girls help other girls with complex issues. >> have your own profile. you choose if you want to help somebody or be helped. >> reporter: other teams worked on confidence coalition, aimed at building self-esteem. black girls code is organizing the oakland teens. >> empower young women of color

new information is out about hiv and a strain that appears to be twice as aggressive as the average virus. a team of researchers studied 73 patients in cuba who tested negative for hiv but three years later had aids. it normally takes 6-10 years for hiv to advance to aids. that leaves less time seek treatment and people in a at risk population may need to be
