works here for tomorrow. cold morning. clear skies. one of the days when you're in the sun it's not that bad. 50-58. we will go 64 in san francisco today. oakland airport will be 65. we lose the breeze. the pressure gradients have relaxed. 30s for many. 40s. 50s. even sfo has dipped to 46. there is that 31 in santa rosa. sonoma 37 degrees. petaluma in the 30s. higher in the higher elevations. it will be sunny today and nice. the low has moved out. that means widespread 60s.

mainly 65-66 for most. here he is mr. sal castaneda. steve, good morning. we are looking at a commute where traffic is going to be busy at the toll plaza already in case you haven't noticed. once they turn the metering lights on, it does get rather busy coming through to the toll plaza. 25 minute drive time there. no problems on the upper deck. san mateo bridge westbound 92 that traffic looks good. nice and clear weather as steve mentioned visibility is good. i think it's good everywhere in the bay area. we've had a problem southbound 101 at mckey. northbound 101 a little slow. if you look at the rest of the maps here in the south bay; we're off to a good start. 85 and 280 all doing very well. let's go back to the desk. six months and now just a few hours ago a big earthquake shook napa. 200 people were hurt. hundreds of buildings were

damaged. i know you remember. tara moriarty is live until downtown napa now checking on how napa is recovering, tara a half year later. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. many buildings are still shut down like this post office here. you can see people have posted all of these hearts here along the fence saying please save our post office. please reopen we miss you. the official estimate for damage was $442 million. a risk management company says that number is really at least twice that much. downtown the safeway that was reslated to open in december but so far no, ma'am word. many small business owners say disaster relief was not enough to cover the losses. but over all city leaders say they have seen patrol guess. we have spoke to one business owner who's inventory inside his store was destroyed but she

managed to get back on her feet. >> it was terrifying. i lost about $38,000. i finished our fourth quarter with growth. >> reporter: she credits locals shopping since the quake supporting their community. the city has also lost some tax money because some hotels, restaurants, and other businesses were badly damaged. the company that owns napa self- storage says it's about to demolish the buildings with all of the contents inside that is is unless they agree to help pay for repair costs. tenants are very angry. over all most people will tell you the city of napa is really coming back rather nicely. live from napa i'm tara moriarty. it's been six months since nicholas dillon was severely hurt when the chimney in his

home collapsed on him. one of his most memorable moments during his reservery he met the -- it took six months for him to work again. nicholas says he's ready to rejoin his team. as the measles outbreak continues, there is now a new concern in the bay area about the possible resurgence of polio. brian flores is in san rafael where they are saying vaccines skipping is the reason why this crippling disease could return. >> reporter: yeah the doctor that is saying this is the public health officer for marin county. there are several different factors that could lead to a resurgence of polio here in the

u.s.. a lot has to do with a recent measles outbreak. dr. matthew says because of that he is urging people and kids to get the poll owe vaccine. polio currently present in nine countries. but 1979 the u.s. declared the disease eradicated because of the disease. but with recent talk, dr. willis says it's time to get the vaccine and the spread of polio could happen again. we have a lot of families that den joy international travel. now the article also talked about how fewer than half of marin schools are vaccinated against polio. these are the percentages of

kids that are not fully vaccinated against polio. new village school at 65 burst. pulllying school at 64%. green wood school in mill valley at 61%. and 52% in waldorf school. doctors say the polio transmitted through direct contact. later today santa claire real county residents will get a chance to say how they feel about a controversial system that will let sheriffs dep its track people through their cell phones. at 9:00 a.m. a public hearing will take place. it will be held at the county board of supervisors about using a federal grant to buy the tracking system. the sheriffs department says the system would be used to help find criminals.

missing ferns and others based on court orders. a similar system called sting ray is also being used in san jose, oakland, and fremont. san francisco city officials looking at ways to increase public transportation late at night. bart shuts down just after midnight. san francisco supervisor scott weiner released task force recommendations to increase late night and early morning bus and train service. >> we're missing a whole 90 minutes of customer time when they have to bail out. >> the report also recommends that bart offer 24 hour service but the agency says it can't currently run around the clock because it needs to shut down the system to perform maintenance work. two state lawmakers --

state assembly members phil ting and kevin mullen are calling for an investigation. the archbishop refused their request to remove what they call the devicive and discriminatory clauses. those lawmakers say the clauses may violate the civil rights of the workers. the national conference in uc berkeley this week on sexual assault is causing controversy. uc berkeley is one of 90 colleges under investigation for the civil office. prompted by a complaint last year who say the college failed to adequately protect students from sexual assault. tomorrow some students are planning a protest they say uc berkeley should fix its own problems before presenting itself as a leader in the

movement against campus rape. today san francisco supervisor mark farrell will introduce a plan to ban tobacco products at baseball parks. it would apply to more than just at & t park. and it would include smokeless tobacco products as well. if approved it would be the first ban in baseball parks in the country. supporters say it will be good for the health of the players and set a good example for america's kids. time is 6:11. it was a busy over night period for repairs after a deadly crash that occurred in the south bay. coming up at 6:30, the message cal train has this morning for drivers. >> but first a defiant former police sergeant sentenced to the maximum penalty in a corruption case. >> at the mac maze let's go right to it. the metering lights were turned on a little late and now we have a little bit of a backup

opinion it has been months since the port has been at full staffing on the night and the weekend shifts. >> i work more in the last few days than i have in the last few months. >> today was relatively smooth. we were able to get in and out without any problems. >> even though workers are back on the job, it could take two months to clear the docks of containers waiting to be loaded and unloaded. a former san francisco police sergeant emerged from court defiant and angry after he was sentenced to prison on corruption charges. a federal judge sentenced furminger to 41 months in prison. the judge says furminger violated the public's trust. the veteran was convicted of stealing money and property from drug dealers. the investigation crew out of the 2011 release of

surveillance videos showing plain closed officers raiding occupied hotel rooms. >> my job is to protect my people. i was papa bear and i rocked. i made it happen. we caught everybody. >> furminger and fellow officer robless was convicted in part because of a testimony from another officer. robless and vargas are still awaiting sentencing. today is a special day. the u.s. postal service is honoring maya angelo with a stamp. the details of the design of the stamp will be unvailed at a later date. may corral angelo died last may. she was 86 years old. her poetry owned her a pugh

early which can be impossible. let's go out to the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. at metering lights came on a little bit late. not sure what happened there. maybe there was a computer malfunction. traffic is backed up beyond the maze. not too bad just yet. 280 that traffic is doing okay. there are no major problems there and we also have word of a crash reported in hayward northbound 880 at 92. let's go to steve. sal can i make a comment here? 580, they are building there like nobody's business. >> yes and it's getting very, very crowded. >> i agree. thank you, sir. i remember back in the day when there was nothing out there. but that was a long time ago. we do have clear skies. it's cold for us. 30s. there are a few o20s. i always love the information. if you take that and some of the vineyard people folks or maybe if you are in

welcome back to mornings on 2. outside lands and the bottle rock festivals those are just two major music events in the bay area and now a third one could soon be on its way. a four-day music festival is being proposed at sonoma raceway for the summer of 2017. the event would attract 40,000 people. >> the music festival would be on the -- and having people stay on site and enjoy the event. >> it's not a done deal yet.

studies have been done on stage positions and noise. the concerts would end at midnight but it is an idea that is is drawing good and bad responses from neighbors. >> this isn't the place for it. there is a lot of tourists that come here and need things to do and want things to do. and it has the infrastructure. >> good or bad the idea goes before the public for the first time tomorrow night. we are officially 50 weeks away from super bowl 50 at levi stadium and the search for volunteers i mean thousands of them is about to get under way. organizers need almost 10,000 people to help with the events. they are recruiting people to help the more than one million visitors get to anaphoria super bowl events all over the bay area. they are look for people who know the landmarks and others who are tech savvy. >> the idea is we will have local bay area natives help

people navigate their way through say the airports or downtown san francisco. or downtown san jose. and basically be good ambassadors for this region. >> in return, they say the volunteers will get a special uniform and also get to spend time in the middle of all of the action. and they will be able to attend special events. one of the things that comes does not come with the job you don't get a free ticket to the big game. hillary clinton will be among today's featured speakers at a silicon valley conference for women. mrs. clinton will be one of the keynote luncheon speakers. organizers say the conference raises awareness abouts earning potential and opportunities in the fields of science and technology and highlights the ground breaking women who are leading the way. it is being held at the santa clara convention center. time is 6:26. a bold new look to improve pedestrian safety. the changes being made to some san francisco crosswalks in an

[ laughter ] i'll be here all week. everything seems to be blooming early. i went on a hike yesterday and oak trees are coming out.

clear skies. it's cold for many. not brutally cold but there are a few 20s. a couple reports up near st. helena. san jose today 67 and 39. the average is 66. so pretty close there. below on the low. that is not much we have seen too much of. record high 76. look at the record low. 26. back in 1897. i won't even come close to that. san francisco starting off 49. makes sense. 58 and then 64 for a high today. low that gave us the breeze yesterday is far enough east. it's taking all of its moisture and the pressure gradient have calmed down. 40s for many including around the bay. upper elevations in the 40s but the lower elevations in the 30s. there is the breeze.

i know it's not much but that is enough to keep the temp up if it wasn't there, i think we would have a lot more 20s. it will be sunny. temperatures starting off in the 30s and 40s. they will end up in the 60s for everybody here. so mid 60s for most. here he is mr. sal castaneda. >> all right, steve, we have a lot going on all of a sudden. and they will start off in the south bay. they have a couple different things in san jose cupertino area. first one northbound 280 at cupertino and the transition ramp from northbound 280 right here. that ramp is partially blocked by an injury crash. the traffic is going to be slow. it was a motorcycle accident. it's not as slow as i thought it would be but you will need a little extra time. and then there is a brush fire reported southbound 101 at oakland road. san jose fire department is on the way. a lot of calls about this. northbound 101 rack may be a little slow in the area. 580 westbound is a mess. we had a stalled motorcycle at santa rita. a crash at airway.

they are making good progress and getting that out of the lane. traffic will be slow. bay bridge westbound near treasure island there is a report of someone blocking lanes. it looks like it could be a minor accident. and traffic is slow on the bridge. a little bit there before you get to the treasure island. when you get to the toll plaza, it is backed up for a 20 minute delay. metering lights went on. let's go wac to the desk. crews worked over night to fix a very busy railroad crossing on the peninsula after a deadly crash out there. the crossing is still closed right now. ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is joining us live now from menlo park to tell us what cal trains wants drivers to know and you will show us what it's like at the tracks out there right now. >> reporter: you can still see some of the damage left over from yesterday's crash. you can see this crossing gate is intact. the crossing gate is completely broken off so the crews you see

out here they are working to repair it. they have to replace it and make sure all the electronic controls sink up to it. the preliminary investigation shows the railroad gate crossing was working properly when a southbound train hit an suv that was stopped on the tracks around 5:00 yesterday afternoon. it sent the vehicle 40 feet across the intersection. the suv was totaled and the woman who was in her 30s was rushed to stanford hospital where he died of her injuries. cal tran says it's likely traffic was backed up in front of her vehicle and instead of waiting, she stopped on the tracks and got trapped when the train came. >> our heart goes out to the family of course. this is tragedy. we want to remind people, don't stop on the tracks. people have to understand that it's not safe to do that. even with all the safety devices we have in place. and don't go across the tracks until you are sure you can get all the way across. >> reporter: trains are back to running on schedule through the

ravenswood crossing. crews are working around them to make repairs. the area near el camino will remain closed. there are crossings like this through the bay area. they want to remind people don't take chances and stop on the tracks if you are stuck in traffic. now in the crash yesterday, we don't know why the woman didn't get on the -- didn't get out of her car. we're not sure how much time she had or if she just froze. but still a very sad situation. >> janine de la vega until menlo park. thank you. time is 6:35. some san francisco crosswalks are about to get a bold new look to make it safer for people to cross the street. instead of the standard two white lines, crosswalks will be zebra striped with bolder white lines. you can see them near schools and mid block crossings. the bolder stripes make the

crosswalks more visible. the change is part of an effort to end pedestrian fatalities in san francisco by the year 2024. a nine-year-old boy in antioch was air lifted to the hospital after a fire cracker exploded in his hand. it happened on madrone street about 5:30. the boy was at home with two sibling tas are also under 13 years old. there is no adult supervision when the explosion happened. the boy was listed in stable condition. the incident is under investigation. a disturbing case of animal cruelty in santa cruz county where someone stuffed two dogs in sandbags and threw them out the window of a moving car. the sandbags included a mother dog and her puppy. the mother dog was able to chew her way through both bags but by the time animal control arrived, the puppy had died.

anyone with information who may have done this is asked to please call the santa cruz county animal shelter. it is a crippling disease that has been eradicated here in the u.s. since the mid 1970s but a doctor in marin county is raising concern that there could be a resurgence of polio. brian flores is in san rafael with the reasons why. >> reporter: good morning. the doctor that we're talking about is the marin county public health officer. he says there could be several factors that lead to a resurgence of polio. now dr. matthew willis says because of that he is urging people and kids to get a polio vaccine even though it has not been seen in the u.s. for years. polio currently present in nine countries worldwide. estimated 35,000 people a year got polio from the 1940s to the 50s. but in the 1979 they declared

hope to talk with people in marin county about how they feel about getting the polio vaccine. >> all right, thank you, brian. our time is 6:38. parents have been told for years avoid giving foods containing peanuts for babies for fear of triggering an allergy. there is new research that shows the opposite is true. the studies in the new england journal of medicine shows feeding babies food that have peanuts before their first birthday seems to prevent the allergy. the study followed babies to be at risk of developing a peanut allergy. those that ate peanut snacks before 11 months old and kept eating them three times a week before they were five years old lowered a chance of developing a peanut allergy by 80%. a warning to parents who use social media to post photos of their children. a lot of people do that but authorities say you might want to think twice about it.

police are seeing a growing trend known as digital kidnapping. they steal photos and post them on their own pages claiming the children are thinks. a lot of teenage girls are using the photos to role play their future. parents are pushing sites like facebook and instagram to step up enforcement of the accounts. >> my son's photo was her cover page. >> both instagram and facebook said this type of behavior violates their terms of service agreements but many moms say they still have difficulty getting the photos removed. the easiest way to prevent this is to keep photos of your children extremely private. google has introduced a new free product that is helped to ease the mind of parents when it comes to children spending time online. yesterday the tech giant launched the youtube kid app.

it is the company's first ever product built from the ground up with children in mind. it does provide a library of filtered family friendly videos and music. the app has various parental controls including a timer setting. there is a young pitcher for the petaluma little league team that made it to the u.s. championships. he was hurt badly in an accident. how friends reacted when the young sports star crashed on an atv. >> and it was six months ago today that an earthquake shookth napa valley. up next we will look at how the community is bouncing back and what still needs to be done.

welcome back time is 6:44. six months ago today a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook napa and the surrounding area. it was a bay area's biggest quake since the loma prieta quake in 1989. strong shaking damaged hundreds of homes, businesses, and government buildings. and the quake also sparked a big fire at a mobile home park

and left people without power and water for days. now in the six months since that quake hit the napa area, recovery has been uneven. some homes and businesses have been fixed and repaired. they are back up and running. but ktvu fox 2 tara moriarty says others are still in the early stages of cleanup. >> reporter: we're here at the post office on 2nd street that has been closed since the quake stopped. and folks really miss it. this one says bring it back. this san art deck koa building that is historic and would like to see it once again open for business. you can see that the repairs here have started and we know that the official estimate for damages throughout the city was $442 million. but a risk management company says that number is at least twice that much. downtown the safeway that was reslated to open in december but so far no word.

clear skies. lots of sun. clear to mild. high clouds are trying to stream toward. they are running into a lot of dry air. high pressure is building in. i think it will deflect to the south. you can see everything into las vegas and southern california is calming down. 31 napa airport. 31 santa rosa. 30s for many. san jose at 40. but not far away. a couple reports of mid 30s. upper 40s for pittsburgh and antioch and brent wood. manely mid 30s. but couple near freezing. there is a little breeze. oakland northeast at 3. concord south at 5. that is enough to hold the temp up. a little windchill there if you are 31 degrees. but that is if it wasn't for that breeze we would be colder than that.

it's not as bad in minneapolis and omaha and st. louis and chicago. it's cold but not as bad. the main chill has moved off into pennsylvania and new york and boston three below. lancaster was 17 below this morning. just incredibly cold. 15 below in cleveland. yo can see the low right there. zooming out of the picture. they may approach a record for the snowiest february. cold mornings for us. 30s and 40s. wide spread 60s today. so a cold morning, sunny and nice. but again in the sun not bad. mostly cloudy friday. a weak system that will come

right down out of the north which means it will be cold. doesn't have much moisture. i think we got a little bit of rain saturday. some snow in the sierra a little bit. >> all right. >> a little good news. >> time is 6:51. a ride along under fire. coming up in 20 minutes stockton for the firefighters surprised to learn a ride along guest who they spent the day with was actually the girlfriend of a notorious bank robber. the reason she wanted to spend the day with the first responder. >> from icy roads to canceled flights. while the temperatures may be in the 60s, it's a different story in many parts of the country. the toll it's taking on people who live back there.

the usually busy dallas fort worth airport canceled because of weather. that had a ripple effect on flights across the country and it is not likely to get back to normal soon. another 200 flights from dallas already canceled today. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he is willing to separate a bill blocking president obama's immigration executive orders from a bill to fund the homeland security account. >> it's another way to get the senate unstuck from a democratic filibuster and move the debate forward. >> mcconnell says he hopes that a clean bill separating the two issues will pass to fund the department of homeland security before the friday deadline. president obama speaking at a gathering of governors says the security workers are the ones that will be effected. >> unless congress acts one week from now more than 100,000 dhs employees, border patrol, court inspectors, tsa agents will show up to work without getting paid.

>> because 85% of homeland security employees are deemed essential they will have to show up for work. two best friends adopted from the same orphanage in china they have been reunited in oakland by a rare medical problem. they were adopted three years ago by different u.s. families. fran sin lives in fresno. rainy lives in north carolina but both have a rare blood disorder. in a search for a bone marrow donor for their daughter, the rainy's started a social media campaign and that is how they found may's long lost friend. the two were reunited yesterday and they received blood transfusions together. >> we've been together as long as i can remember. and we seem to find each other in the orphanage. we eat lunch at school and we sit by each other when we eat
