fire investigators are sifting through the debris and ash after a house fire killed one person in sunnyvale this morning. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we'll have more on that story in a moment you about we begin in -- but begin in san jose where a runway is shut down at the airport after a plane made an emergency landing because the landing gear failed. the plane is sitting at the spot where it ran off runway 30 left at 10:30 this morning. the landing gear collapsed sometime during the flight.

what caused that is not unknown. the airport dispatched fire engines. as a precaution everyone on board escaped unharmed. there's no word yet on when that runway will reopen but the other two runways at min mineta are open and the spokesperson said there are no delays to other flights. emergency crews are still in a sunnyvale neighborhood this noontime, where a person was killed in a fire that destroyed a home. a passerby called 911 after seeing fire and smoke coming from the house at fish hawk. firefighters say when they arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames. the roof and second floor completely collapsed. it took about an hour to put on the flames. the fire was so intense, neighbors were worried it could spread to other homes. >> i looked out the side window and it was complete orange out there. i yelled at my family to get out and by then, the firefighters were knocking on our door and we just ran out.

>> firefighters found the victim toward the back of the house on fire. that person has not yet been identified but neighbors el tell us that an elderly -- tell us that an elderly man lived there. the cause of the fire is under investigation. more than two dozen people were hurt when a metro link train derailed this morning in southern california. now the ntsb will try to piece together exactly what went wrong and if anything could have been don't differently. sal castanedo is live in the newsroom now with the very latest. sal? >> tori, good afternoon. the metro link system is very similar to the caltrain system here. the truck driver that stalled this truck on the tracks told authorities he accidentally turned onto the train tracks. he's not from the area. i thought it was a highway and became stuck knowing the train was coming. he says he got out and walked away before the train made impact. when emergency crews arrived, they found three cars of the five car train on their sides and a truck that was destroyed.

the metro link commuter train was in oxnard making its way east when it hit a utility truck pulling a trailer at a crossing at about 5:40 this morning. crash turned the truck into a huge fireball. officials say the crash could have been much worse. the collision happened on a straightaway and authorities say that enabled the train engineer to see the truck on the tracks from a good distance and start applying the brakes. the train was still not able to stop in time. officials say 28 of the 51 people on board were injured. four of them critically. many were evaluated at special areas before they were transported to hospitals. >> broken arms and legs and cuts and bruises. >> witnesses say the loud crash was proceeded by the horn of the train for what seemed like a long time. the five-car train was being pushed by the locomotive but the engineer was in front as is

typical. authorities say the ennear is one of the -- engineer is one of the criticically injured. the driver of the vehicle was found a mile away unhurt. he's cooperating with the investigation. union pacific says it hopes to have the very busy section of track open pie tomorrow morning- - by tomorrow morning. back to you. >> thank you. caltrain is reminding drivers to use kauks at crossings following a deadly accident at rush hour yesterday. authorities say an suv was stopped on the truck at ravenswood avenue in menlo park when it was hit by a southbound train around 4:45 yesterday afternoon. the collision sent the vehicle 40 feet across the intersection. the female driver in her 30s was killed. caltrain says it's likely the woman got stuck on the trucks because of slow traffic ahead of her. >> sometimes at peak commute hours traffic will back up across the railroad tracks. that's what happened. somebody stopped on the tracks.

>> caltrain is reminding drivers not to cross unless you are sure you can make it across all the way. they say it can take five, six miles for a train to become to a complete stop. today marks six months since a 6.0 earthquake struck napa. while parts of the city have rebounded, others still linger in limbo. we took a tour of downtown napa this morning and saw many places still closed due to quake damage. no word when the post office on second and the safeway on clay will reopen. many small business owners say disaster relief was not enough to cover their losses. so they've been slow to bounce back. >> physically recovering, we've noticed the building used to be covered in a facade. the side was falling apart during the quake. some of the other places have been repaired. it's recovering slowly physically but there's recovery. from what i heard the relief has been coming slowly and very selectively. >> the city has also lost tax money because some hotels,

restaurants and other businesses were badly damaged. the official estimate for damages throughout the city was $442 million but a risk management company says the number is really at least twice that. nicholas dylan was severely injured during the quake when the chimney at his house collapsed onto him. one of his most serious injuries was a broken pelvis. doctors expected it would take six months for the 13-year-old to be able to walk again. he surprise him and already practicing soccer. he said he's not ready to rejoin the team because he still does not have a lot of stamina. he said surviving the quake makes him appreciate every day he's alive. tomorrow is "we day." ktvu is the proud sponsor. our reporter shows us how some students in san leandro earned their way to "we day" by making

a positive change in this world. >> reporter: these students at john muir middle school in san leandro are learning way more than the free arts. they are in season of service, period of peace focusing on themes such as service, nonviolence, knowledge and giving. these risk bands are part of that. students earn them through specs activities. >> you basically can earn your red wristband by giving. that's amazing. >> reporter: students raised money to buy goats for families in nicaragua. each ghost -- goat cost $50. for a family that gets them, it's like winth lottery. >> the goat makes 15 cups a milk aday. >> reporter: students have raised more than a thousand dollars for 22 goats. they can watch educational videos on civil rights videos,

the justice department says it will not file civil rights charges against the florida man who shot and killed unarmed teenager, trayvon martin. federal prosecutors say there's not enough evidence to prove that george zimmerman violated martin's civil rights. thursday is the third anniversary of martin's death. the 17-year-old was walking home from the store when zimmerman shot him to death in florida. zimmerman was later a -- acquitted of second-degree murder. mish mcconnell has offered

a vote to fund the homeland security department without blocking president obama's immigration orders. >> it's another way to get the senate unstuck from a democratic philly buster an move the -- filibuster and move forward. >> president obama says it's the homeland security workers who would be affected. >> unless congress acts, one week from now, more than 100,000 employees, border patrol, port inspectors, tsa agents will show up to work without getting paid. >> because about 85% of homeland security employees are deemed essential, they would still have to show up for work even though they would not get paid until a budget for that department is passed. isis militants reportedly

captured as many as 100 syrian christians from northeast syria today but in iraq the military says they've liberated the highly contested town from isis control. fox news correspondent has more from jerusalem. >> reporter: isis is reportedly on a new offensive against christians in syria in recent days an abducts 70 christians as hostages. the news brought pleas for help. >> translator: all of the political parties in the community want to issue a straight to strongly con-- statement to kongly condemn these actions -- strongly condemn these actions. >> reporter: ashton carter all but ruling out american, boots on the ground, to fight isis. critics say the obama administration isn't doing enough to counter the isis threat.

mark silicon valley conference for women. the conference raises awareness about the earning potential and opportunities in the fields of science and technology and highlights the groundbreaking women who are leading the way. it's being held at the santa clara convention center. let's get a look at the forecast with rosemary. pretty chilly this morning. >> bone chilling in some areas. we sank into the upper 20s to low 30s for some of the valleys. but the light wind as well as the clear skies and outside of the doors, the mostly sunny skies and the lighter winds helping to make it feel really nice about now. temperatures a few degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. without the wind, it will feel really good as well. giving you a look at stormtracker2, no rain in the forecast, at least not for the next couple of days. i do see some entering the picture by the weekend. we have wall-to-wall sunshine from the coast, inside the bay and with the clear skies and the overnight hours we'll continue with the cold weather as we get into the morning but by the afternoon, we have mild

weather in store. ridge of high pressure rebuilding over the next few days. tuesday, wednesday, thursday very similar to well morning lows and then the afternoon. widespread 60s in the forecast. we are going to end february with the possibility of scattered showers coming our way. after more than two weeks of dry weather, it looks like friday night into saturday will be the best possibility. i will roll you through this as we get through. the next few days not a lot going on. the ridge of high pressure remains in control. the storm track stays to the north. by 4:00 friday nfern. a system sinks into california. you can see a little bit of shower activity here in and around perhaps the sierra and central valley but we'll have the slight possibility of showers in the area for friday. it looks like the better bet will be on saturday. doesn't look like a whole lot of rain. .25 or so but that will be the next opportunity at seeing some rain. this is a cold storm. it looks like the sierra will pick up snow. if you are thinking about going to the sierra for the weekend. snow levels could drop down to
