k students were invited to attend. now some parents are speaking out. noelle walker is live outside the middle school where the district is doing some damage control tonight. noelle. >> reporter: frank, we heard about this from parents who posted to our ktvu facebook page, saying students would be segregated for anything. it turns out the school was, too. the superintendent told me this event was planned by a well- liked, well intended teacher who didn't get the district's approval first. in a place that teaches lessons. the middle school is learning a tough lesson. >> it looks like seg regages. >> segregation. >> the district is reviewing protocalls after the only african american teacher issued passes to african american students only to attend an assembly monday afternoon. >> it makes me uncomfortable that all the african american kids walked out of class.

it's not something that they should have had happen to them. >> and that included my right and the rights of eight other americans who wanted to go to central high school. >> the teacher showed this short clip about education and the civil rights movement. she told me off camera, she wanted to address a growing issue of kids on campus using racial slurs like the n word. she handed out a survey about racial attitudes and felt students would be more open to talk if they were among other african americans. >> as a parent, i can understand why there is concern. because kids came home and said, i was shown a movie. i was -- i took a survey. and by the way, everyone in the courtroom room was african american like me. >> parents of those students called to complain. >> that's not right. you are going back to the 60s with segregation. i mean, we are all equal here. >> it's about black history month or why wouldn't all students be invited to it?

yeah, curious. >> the principal sent this letter home to parents today explaning what happened. saying while the teacher's actions were well intended, she did not follow the appropriate protocalls. the letter apologizes for not allowing parents to give permission prior to the assembly. >> i know that her heart was in the right place, but it was poor judgment in my opinion. >> the method may have detracted from the intended message. >> but we still have to address the issue of, kids, you cannot call each other the n word or all these different words because they have harm. they have a hateful history behind them. >> most agree the lesson is a valuable one for everyone. >> this is not an issue that just impacts african american students. it impacts our entire school population. that's the important thing to me. we want to make sure that every student that comes to school feels valued, respected, and treated with respect. >> so about 9% of the student body here is african american. about 110 students attended

that assembly and frank, the superintendent says any future talks about this or any other subject will be with the entire student body. >> noelle walker tonight, noelle, thank you. a young san jose woman who is accused of killing a gilroy man appeared in court today. 19-year-old,gabriello ortiz killed robert gieseer. he was found february 16. a surveillance camera captured ortiz seen here on the right, and another woman using the victim's credit cards. prosecutors say they are confident they will get a conviction. if we couldn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt, we wouldn't have filed the case. >> ortiz is expected to enter a plea during a court appearance set for next week. now her arrest could solve another crime. fremont police now say an associate of ortiz could be linked to one of their cases where a man was drugged, beaten, and robbed. we have new developments on

a plan by the santa clara sheriff's department to buy a cell phone tracking system. the santa clara board of supervisors approved a plan to spend federal money. the device is called a sting ray. it mimics a cell phone tower to connect with all phones in a specific area. critics say it could easily be abused by infringing on the privacy of innocent bystanders. the sheriff says that's a misrepresentation. >> the device does not eves drop. it is merely a trangulation. it requires a search warrant, a magistrate approval. >> several cities, including san jose, oakland, and fremont are already using that device. the berkeley city council is set to consider a moratorium on drones at tonight's city council meeting. the peace and justice commission wants it to last two years while the city weighs a ban on drones. coming up with a drone policy

will take time and the skies could be filledded with drones by then. and that it would be harder to regulate them at that point. women and lineup. that it was the theme today at a conference. and the keynote speaker was someone familiar with the subject. hillary clinton. as ali rasmus reports, the former secretary of state covered a lot of topic, including a possible run for president. >> the event was about women and leadership. >> i'm here for inspiration. >> you know, great women. more than 5,000 women attended the lead on silicon valley women's conference and hillary clinton knew her audience well. >> what you do does not have to be big and dramatic. you don't have to run for office. the former secretary of state did not say whether she decided to run for president in 2016, but her joke is on the topic went over well with the female audience. so did the other issues clinton

brought up, like equal pay for women. >> a woman tends to make 60% less than a man with the same degree. >> and paid family leave for parents. >> the flexibility and support that american families need so that parents can be both great workers and great parents. >> when asked why she thought the country needed a woman president, she talked about the comrade she experienced with women across the aisle and offered this advice to the women in the audience. >> we have to support each other more. and this is a constant challenge and we need to be willing to stand up for other women, to raise questions about how other women are being treated. >> she needs the women's vote to win. communication strategist says the fact she was the keynote speaker says a lot about her future plans. >> she needs to be here just as much as the women who are here are interested in hearing what she has to say. i think it's really a mutually

beneficial arrangement. >> and when the moderator asked clinton when she would announce her run for president, clinton said all in time. she has a long checklist to go through before making her decision, ali rasmus. >> the women's caucus introduced legislation that seeks to bridge the wage gap between genders. the legislation would strengthen the equal pay law to make sure women are paid equally. it would offer protection against retaliation for women who ask about pay at work. >> they are not working because they are too rigid or too vague. i mean, we have to fix the way we define terms. we have to fix the way we prove them. >> equal rights advocates chrks is a san francisco based civil rights association said in 2013, women in california

who worked full-time made 84 cents to every dollar a man earned and the gap was even bigger for women of color. today marks six months since that 6.0 earthquake that devastated the wine country and a look at how much has changed there. >> ktvu spent the day looking at the progress in napa and caught up with the young boy who was seriously injured when a chimney came tumbling down during that quake. >> 14-year-old nick dillon looks the part of the average high school freshman. but the napa teen is wise beyond his years. >> honestly, a lot of people tell me nick, you're so inspirational. i don't see myself like that. i'm an ordinary teenager that has a challenge come up and i found a way to overcome it. >> in the 6.0 earthquake that rocked the area on august 24, nec ice pelvis was crushed when the family's brick fireplace fell on top of him. >> it hurt. it hurt a lot. i can picture the night in my

head. it was crazy. i wouldn't want that to happen to anybody. >> doctors told him he wouldn't walk for six months, but he proved them wrong, starting to walk three months ago. he is running and can even play a little soccer, his favorite sport. nick appreciates how the community rallied around him. >> i am more grateful for everything i have. when i wake up in the morning, i'm alive. i have a difference today to someone else, if that makes any sense. those people changed my life in the way i see the world now. >> just like nick is rising from the ashes of his injury, so is the city of napa, completing the repairs is still taking time. 153 buildings and homes remain red tagged. >> i would think that if you had relatively minor damage, you have been fixed up for quite some time. if you have major damage, it might be half of the people who have major damage or still waiting for the final repairs to be made. >> his vice principal said nuke personifies the rebound from this disaster. >> we have struggles, but

authorities in southern california say they arrested the driver of a box truck who caused a train derailment in venture ray county. police say the 54-year-old man took a wrong turn and drove on to the tracks before he abandoned his truck. a short time later, a metro link commuter train slammed head on into the truck. police caught the driver a mile and a half away and arrested him for felony hit-and-run. 28 passengers were hospitalized. including four in critical condition. crosswalks around san francisco are getting a safety makeover. the san francisco municipal transportation agency is repainting crosswalks with a boulder zebra stripe. the work started in december. so far, 200 crosswalks at 50 intersections have been repainted. a total of 1,000 intersections are expected to have these new

zebra stripes by the end of next year. >> there's more paint in the intersection. it's higher activity, so easier for drivers to see, and it runs parallel to the crosswalks. it's not just two lines from one edge of the street to the other. it's a series of wide lines that fill up the entire crosswalk. >> the improvements are part of the city's vision zero initiative which seeks to reduce pedestrian and traffic related fatalities in san francisco by 2024. those now famous bay bridge lights on the bay bridge will be temporarily shut down in just a few days. 25,000 l.e.d. lights that run across the western span will be turned off on march 5. that's so caltrans can do maintenance work and new longer lasting lights can be installed. the project should be done and the lights back on in time for super bowl 50 next year. new at 6:00, restoring life to a run down equestrian center

that sits along 7-acres in the oakland hills. there haven't been horses for more than a decade and the stables are in serious need of major repairs and renovations. now after three years of negotiations, a contract has been signed to get that place back up and running. >> however, as ktvu fox 2 reporter, claudine wong tells us, that won't happen without the help of the community. >> i know, are you hungry? you're always hungry. >> melanie diamond has always loved horses. >> you're a good girl. >> she has always wanted to share that passion with others. and she believes here in the oakland hills, anything is possible. >> this is a property. welcome. it's 7.2-acres. >> these are the oakland city stables. >> the place has been shut down for 12 years and so there's been considerable deterioration. >> diamond just won the contract to bring it back, but she has to come up with funding and support. >> we need to get boots on the ground. >> her dream is to make it financially viable. >> we're going to take it in

baby steps, because this is a large property and a very large project. >> she wants to make it a green sustainable property and have mentoring programs and youth programs. >> kids that are going to come in that have never seen a horse before that don't even have any idea there are horses in oakland. >> she used to ride horses at the city stables. >> when i grew up, thank god for the horses, because i don't know. i might have been in a lot of trouble. >> she runs the equestrian center. >> every stall is full. we have quite a lengthy waiting list. >> a big need to get the list. >> diamond is hoping by spring, at least some of this will be open. she already has horses lined up. >> there you go. >> like this 27-year-old. >> making friends? >> he'll be one of the horses that the kids will be able to come and brush on him and love on him. >> and this horse named harry potter. >> you want a horse that is really calm and that isn't

it's still february. but we're moving quickly into march and rain would be a good thing, but not with temperatures like these. we're looking at 70 today in napa. 70 in santa rosa. highs will mimic those, very similar. the jet stream is riding to the north, continued to do this as it has throughout january and now into parts of february. and so we are going to see another day tomorrow like today and right through the weekend with above average temperatures. there will be a slight cooldown on the weekend, but nothing really earth shattering. the forecast for tomorrow then will be like today, which will continue the same pattern. so 59 in oakland right now. it's 60 in howard. 57 in mountain view. overnight lows with a light winds. we'll get down again tonight. we saw freezing in the coolest spots. most of the cold spots will be low 30s. frost back in the forecast. there was a frost advisory last night in the central valley. that could occur again tonight. we'll track that for you.

advisory or not, you're going to see frost up there. you're going to see frost in clayton. you know where you're going to find it. overnight low in oakland, about 42 degrees. but at 7:00 a.m., 44. daytime high in oakland, 68 degrees. check out san jose, good air quality. the winds have been up a little bit. 69 in san jose for a daytime high. lunchtime is mid 60s. 67 in can cord. 70 in san francisco. the thing to note is, you probably notice this, all the blossoms out there. there have been a lot of trees that have been fooled into thinking it's an early spring. a lot of pine pollens as well. if you know people or you are suffering from what you think is a cold, it could be an allergy. a tree allergy. sot five-day forecast breaks out like this. cold mornings the next couple of mornings and temperatures crack down a little bit as we head towards the weekend. right in this period, friday and saturday, a slight chance

tonight. different story, final just in. 114-107. warriors win and seth currie, the foot is not bothering him. up for the soft slam and steve likes having that guy back in the lineup. you'll see more from him coming up behind the back and to the bucket like nobody's business. certainly doesn't look like a guy whose foot is bothering him. 32 points and as i said, the game just ended a couple of minutes ago in washington against the wizards, 114-107, a brief one-game losing streak for the warriors. excited about this story, as san francisco giants well into spring training now, in fact, the regulars just arriving this week. but buster posey, like you probably haven't seen him before. he is not exactly a life of the party type of guy, but he was doing some on camera work that we got a chance to see behind the scenes. a toy toyota commercial.

that's an outlet for him, away from the baseball field and how he got into it. >> i think it's just something with kind of the way i grew up, two brothers and a sister and a goofy dad. just kind of the way, you know, i cut loose a lot more probably than people think. so, this is a way that kind of comes through, i think. >> that's cutting loose for buster posey right there. but we have the full story tonight at 10:00. you'll see him filming the commercial. he's the northern california spokesperson for toyota and baseball highlights as well. the highlight and the interview for me is when he talked about his conversation with madison bumgarner and what the two said to each other. >> funny story about his cleats, too? did he not have his cleats and run and buy some at the last second? >> he didn't have the right cleats during that commercial that he is a spokesperson for.
