>> it is up because of the low cloud deck. yesterday was much colder that is for sure. we have clear skies and dew points were lower. well, low cloud deck said i will come wac. we have a weak system coming down. it's not wide spread. there is plenty of low low clouds. 53 san francisco to start. we will go 63 today. increase in that low cloud deck. coast and bay will come down. the mere fact that the clouds are there will take the edge off some of the high temps today. big ban of high temps but boy are they pushing south. no issues with that. for us 30s for a few. but a lot of 40s and 50s. they are up. napa 39 yesterday. that is a big difference. there are a couple of 30s but not very many. close to danville. a lot of 40s. much cooler antioch and brentwood and pittsburgh. we will focus our attention by

friday for a system coming down out of the north which will give the sierra some snow and maybe some rain here late friday into saturday. more on that coming up in ten minutes. 50s and 60s by the coast. all right sal, i haven't heard anything yet. has something changed? >> we have something that is a little peculiar. let's go to the oakland area. i want to start off with westbound 580 in oakland near highway 13 there is a truck. a semi truck that reportedly spilled some sort of debris all over the roadway. now 7-8 vehicles have flat tires. westbound 580 just past 13. what is curious on this stretch of 580 big rigs are not allowed unless there is a huge problem on 880. but this big rig being up there to begin with is somewhat unusual and now we have several vehicles with flat tires. westbound 580 near highway 13

between highway 13 and the high mccarthur exit there. let's move along to the bay bridge toll plaza, that is backed up for a 25-30 minute wait if you're at the end of the line. no problems on the actual bridge. in case you want to use the san mateo bridge instead, that traffic looks good heading out to the peninsula. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. southwest airlines is trying to finish up the safety inspections required by the faa. tara moriarty is at the oakland airport this morning. keeping an eye orange things. southwest passengers have to scramble. >> reporter: that is the reality for a lot of folks here this morning at oakland international airport where ten flights have been canceled.

let's see nine are all departing. one is arriving. southwest was forced to ground 128 planes yesterday. that is one fifth of its fleet after they discovered the misinspections. 100 flights are expected to be canceled today. after a lot of finagling many passengers have been able to hop on to other flights but not without some headaches. >> flight from denver and it was canceled due to maintenance. >> so what are you going to do today? >> put me on a later flight going through chicago. >> are you frustrated? >> yeah. i got up really early and now i didn't need to. >> reporter: the misinspections involve hydraulic issues. they took the plane out of service and began checking them. they were fined in 2009 for failing to inspect complaints for cracks in the fuse l lodge. and then they ordered

inspections of the 737 after a hole burst open mid flight. this morning we will keep an eye on all of these flights and let you know if there are any more canceled flights and what the backup is looking like. i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> thank you. at last check three southwest flights leaving sfo have been canceled this morning. we are keeping an eye on this. two arriving flights also canceled. and no flights in and out of san jose are effected. new this morning a marin county search and rescue team are joining the search for a missing baby boy only two weeks old northwest of sacramento. his mother had been missing too but she has been found. they were both reported missing monday in woodlawn. the baby is two week old justice reese. the mother was found yesterday in knights landing. authorities say she was hysterical and very

disoriented. so far there are no details on how green became separated from her baby. daly city police are hoping new dash cam video will help track down a man accused of a vicious beating attack on a cab driver. alex savidge is joining us live in san francisco with more on the search and how other cab drivers are reacting. alex. >> reporter: good morning, to you. cabbies tell me they always worry about something like this happening. they say it's a very dangerous job and now we're getting a look at how dangerous daly city police have just released this surveillance video from the cabs on board camera system that shows the man wanted for an attack on a driver earlier this month. it happened the day after valentine's. the driver picked up the well- dressed passenger in the dress shirt and tie in downtown san francisco and dropped him off in daly city. that is when he refused to pay his fare. when the driver got out to confront him, the passenger

started punching and kicking the 60-year-old man leaving him on the ground and this morning we showed this video to cab drivers here in the city. they were troubled by what they saw but also said it's not unusual. >> it happened a lot to me. and you know, sometimes i have some crazy guy get many my cab and drunk and try to attack me and don't want to pay me. >> reporter: and surveillance video also shows several people either walking by or driving by while the attack is happening and no one stops. the driver who was beaten had to be hospitalized for various injuries but he is expected to be okay. and the passenger wanted for this assault, the man seen in the video is described as hispanic between 25-35 years old and obviously that video image gives a really clear picture of this man police are looking for. if anybody recognizes him, they should put in a call to daly city police. >> all right alex savidge in

san francisco. thank you. time is 6:07. this afternoon a judge in santa clara county is due to set a trial date for the man accused of kidnapping and killing nor began hill teenage -- morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. he's accused of killing the 15- year-old girl who vanished almost three years ago while on her way to school. her body has never been found. prosecutors say they are confident they have the evidence that will lead to both a conviction and the death penalty. a deadly crash at a cal train crossing in menlo park is prompting calls for new safety measures along the tracks. a 35-year-old woman was killed on monday when her suv became boxed in by traffic at the ravens wood avenue crossing. people in the area say the intersection often gets backed up and can get confusing. cal train says the solution may be what is called grade separation where traffic crosses above or below the

tracks. >> any time a pedestrian or vehicle has to cross the tracks, there is a safety concern. so it would be a significant improvement. >> menlo park is already working with cal train to lower the road under the tracks but the design phase could take at least a couple of years and then it could take five years before construction is complete. burlingame and palo alto are considering similar measures. investigators now say a truck driver deliberately abandoned his truck yesterday on train tracks in ventura county. that caused a metro link train to derail and crash. at least 28 people were hurt and hospitalized including four in critical condition. federal investigators say the truck was not stuck on the tracks. a though the truck drivers wife is claiming the truck stalled out. the 54-year-old driver from arizona was found by police about a mile away from the crash scene. >> his name is jose alejandro sanchez ramirez.

he was a truck driver for a company and he was driving the vehicle in question. he was taken into custody for a felony hit and run violation. >> now investigators say the train engineer saw the truck and hit the brakes but just wasn't enough time to stop. the impact caused three of the trains five cars to derail. tonight uc berkeley students plan to hold a protest on the final day of a conference on campus sexual assault. the protest will include offensive quotes that students say come from administrators after someone reported an attack. the students say uc berkeley needs to fix its own problems before presenting itself as a leader in the movement. they also say out of the 80 invited speakers, only a few are students that actually have been assaulted. a spokeswoman for uc berkeley says many students helped organize the conference and their input is welcome.

we are following developing news, there is an active police search under way in martinez after a high speed chase that started near sacramento. it ended with the vehicle crashing in a neighborhood right near highway 680. ktvu fox 2 brian flores is right near the search scene and brian, i know this is so active, the police just asked you to move away. >> reporter: yeah, they did. it looks like they may have caught at least one person here. they were looking for two people from the search this morning. the chase that started in sacramento. we also believe that the people inside the car may have been involved in some type of robbery. this is arthur road. if you take this exit and see a bunch of cop cars, this is the reason why. they set up a perimeter looking for individuals that crashed

into a fence afar thunder shower road and two of the people inside the car fled. three were taken into custody. this happened 45 seconds ago. several of the contra costa sheriffs officers ran up this hill to look for this person. this was the crash scene afar thunder shower road. the chase began in the sacramento area. it's believed the people in the car again they used spike strips to slow the car down. as we take it back out here live, this remains a very active scene. when we arrived on scene, we were told the move day. a homeowner said a person was seen running from her yard. so they notified the sheriffs department and moments ago they ran up this hill here. to catch somebody.

also the commute is going to be good. there is a report of a crash westbound 580 at high. so we have problems in oakland. if you are driving up to downtown or the lake shore area. it's time for the forecast with steve. we have a little change here today. yesterday was clear and colder. a lot of 30s and 20s. not today. over cast over oakland that will cool them down. they were 70 downtown yesterday. went 66 today. low clouds. that will burn off. low clouds and mild to warm inland. a little cooler coast and bay. friday increasing clouds. a cold light rain looks like it will make it late friday into saturday. possibility of thunderstorms out to the valley but more important it looks like the sierra will get some snow. and snow level will come way down on sunday.

and then it's been dry ever since. it looks like we will close the month with some rain. not a lot. oakland forecast starting off mostly cloudy at 50. we'll go 60 at noon. 66 today. temperatures coming down a little bit. hard to see but it's in the gray. it's not making much of a move north. it's basically san francisco. it will start to get pushed south. higher clouds trying to take aim. all the way down to baja and falling apart. for us a few 30s. fairfield is in there. napa is 39. kathy says i concur with that 39. yesterday they were all ore the place. 36 santa rosa. that is cold. up a little bit. san jose 31. livermore is close at 40. upper 30s menlo park and palo alto. 35 today.

40s for the rest. low cloud deck on the martha means it will be cooler coast and bay. but for inland temps they are still cold. arcadia at 36. the big news isn't the colder temps anymore, it's the next system coming out of texas. you can see the snow ons go as it goes into arkansas and fine line between freezing rain and drizzle. and also denver is zeroing in on the snowiest february ever. the record is 22 inches. 3-8 expected today. a lot of changes here. just not for us. our system from the north looks like a pretty good change. low clouds. cool, sunny, mild. a little cooler coast and bay. low 60s. upper 60s to low 70s for some inland.

welcome back to mornings on 2. it is 6:24. we are getting word of the death of an influential bay area. she passed away at her home yesterday at the age of 56 but the cause of her death was not released. she was the daughter of former oakland tribune owner robert maynard and being remembered as a fearless journalist in her own right. she was also president of the maynard institute. >> today is day two of san jose's sin quest film festival. it kicked off last night with a california premier this movie. it's about bat kid and his one of a kind san francisco

experience. >> this is a documentary that follows miles scott and his make a wish foundation experience to become bat kid and save san francisco from the grips of evil. miles and his family were not on the red carpet last night but the movies director was and gave us an update on his condition. >> i know he is great. he is fabulous. he is in first grade he is starting little league soon. they are private people. >> little miles had been diagnosed with leukemia when he was only 18 months old. he is now in remission and his family says he is doing well. this marks the 25th anniversary of sin quest. they expect more than 100,000 people to take part over the next 12 days. school officials in benicia are apologizing for what they say was a poorly conducted

lesson about race. the only african american teacher at benicia middle school held a special assembly on monday about the civil rights movement. but she only invited american students. now she says she wanted to address issues like the use of the n-word and thought students might open up if they were only among other black students. the superintendent says while the teacher meant well, she did not do the right thing and says any future talks will include the entire student body. it's now 6:27. and the clock is ticking for lawmakers to reach a deal to keep the homeland security department running. the specific services that will be impacted if they miss friday's deadline. >> a popular pet food manufacture is getting slammed by dog owners with claims that it's causing illness and death. we'll tell you about the legal action being taken. >> good morning. we are looking at a compute here where traffic is doing well if you drive on 237.

morning. >> reporter: yeah it certainly was. a lot of them haven't heard about it. even though this problem began really yesterday. passengers some of them were taking it in stride. they were being rerouted on to other flights. some were not effected at all. a lot were very annoyed that is because ten flights had been canceled in oakland. nine of them is departing. yesterday we know southwest was forced to ground 128 planes. that is one fifth of its fleet after it discovered the misinspections. passengers have been able to hop on to other flights. many had to take layovers and out of the way cities are arriving at their destinations hours later than scheduled. >> as long as they land safely, we are okay. >> where are you flying this morning? >> san antonio, texas. >> we got put on another flight. >> reporter: so where do you have to go between? >> we are going to l.a. and phoenix. >> i think there will be lessons that are being learned

and it's not going to be repeated. that's what i'm hoping for. >> reporter: the misinspections involve hydraulic systems used to control the rudder. southwest says when it discovered the lapse it took the planes out of service. and then in 2011, faa ordered extensive inspections of some of southwest easeledder 737s after a five foot hole burst open in one plane mid flight forcing an emergency landing in arizona. throughout the morning we will keep checking the board and let you know if we notice any changes. i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> we checked with the other major bay area airports, the duty manager reports one arriving and one departing southwest flights have been canceled. he doesn't believe it's related

to safety inspections. homeland security department will run out of money if congress does not pass a funding bill by friday. 30,000 employees would be furloughed in a shut down. workers with the central functions such as airport security screening and patrolling borders would be required to go to work but would not get paid until the shut down is over. the sticking point is the republican controlled congress passing a homeland security bill that includes legislation that over rides president obama's executive action on immigration. a bay area man is suing purina dog food. ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're at a dog park in sunnyvale. telling us about a claim of toxic ingredients. what did you find out? >> that spokesman from purina told me this lawsuit that is filed against the company is

completely baseless. this involves the beneful dry dog food line. but there is a man that says beneful dry dog food is why his dog died. that dog owner is the plaintiff in a class action lawsuit that was filed in u.s. district court in northern california. it states that the eight kinds of beneful dog food has caused internal bleeding, liver failure, vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney failure. the dog owner says he started buying beneful in late december or early january this year and gave it to his dog. soon after he says all three of his dogs became sick and his bulldog died. the suit says that toxins in the dog food are to blame including propylene glycol. in the past four years there has been more than 3,000 online complaints with dogs becoming ill or dying after eating

beneful. they say there is nothing wrong with beneful and millions of dogs eat their -- and as you medical examinerred, dave, we are here at the dog park. we did see something walking around here but we hope to catch up with some of the dog owners. >> that be interesting. thank you. time is 6:38. a woman riding a bike was killed in a collision with a truck in east oakland. now this happened yesterday afternoon at san leandro and prune street near 98th avenue. the woman was in the intersection when she was hit. she was pronounced dead at the scene. authorities haven't told us her name yet but they say she was in her 30s or 40s. the driver of the truck involved is cooperating with investigators. two men who lived at a house targeted in a deadly home invasion robbery in santa rosa

are under arrest themselves. on monday we brought you live coverage of the robbery at a house that ended with a police stand off in the parking lot of the kizer hospital. now a resident inside allegedly shot and killed one of the robbers. the press democrat reports that officers later found an elaborate marijuana grow operation and a hash oil lab inside the home. two people that live there are set to be arraigned later today. time is 6:39. it's taken more than 12 years but the oakland police department is reportedly close to complying with a long list of court order reforms. back in 2003, the city of oakland agreed to implement 51 refuels in the wake of the oakland riders police corruption scandal. the department is now complied with 48 of the mandates. they included uniformed mounted cameras, policy changes involving foot pursuits. instead of jumping over fences to confront a suspect, the police officers have set up a

perimeter. they give suspects a chance to give up which leads to fewer injuries and lawsuits claiming police abuse. >> and at the end of this what the city gets is a police department that treats its citizens fairly with respect. behaves in a constitutional manner but also effective at reducing crime. >> oakland police actually turned to the city of detroit to learn how to comply with federal mandates. over all crime in oakland is down and so are compliants of police officer misconduct. oakland's police chief is hoping to comply with all the mandates when the next report is due in april. santa clara county board of supervisors is moving forward with a plan to buy a cell phone tracking system. the board agreed to allow the sheriffs department to use federal grant money to buy a device called sting ray. but the sheriffs department says it would only be used to locate the subject of an

it's 6:44. daly stipples have released new video after a taxicab driver being assaulted by a passenger after he refused to pay his pay. they hope the video will help track down the man suspected in this attack. alex savidge is joining us from san francisco with more on the search and reaction from other drivers. alex. >> reporter: pam, good morning to you. cabbies we have been talking to this morning say this is a dangerous job certainly. they are not necessarily surprised to hear about the brutal assault. it happened in daly city a

couple weeks ago. it was the day after valentines and daly city police have is just released surveillance video of a man wanted for this attack on a driver. the driver picked up a man in a dress shirt and tie in downtown san francisco and dropped him off in daly city here the cow palace. that is where the passenger refused to pay his fair. when the driver got out to confront him, the man started punching and kicking the 60- year-old driver. we show this video to cab drivers in the city, they were troubled by what they saw on the tape. one driver told me he always reminds passengers that his surveillance cameras are rolling. >> you don't have to tell him hey, there is a camera here, be careful. you can be nice. small guys there is a cam -- smile guys, there is a camera.

little bit slow. no major problems along that stretch. 6:48 today's weather with steve. a little cooler for most. we have a beautiful sunrise here. a couple high clouds. fog out there. low clouds. petaluma says very foggy here. oh zoom out. the weak system brushing us has increased the low cloud deck. so that will take a couple degrees off the high temps. yesterday was crystal clear. low clouds. mostly sunny. mild to warm. away from the coast. a little cooler. low over cast will be on the move tomorrow. increasing clouds friday into saturday. it looks like a cold light rain maybe some thunderstorms out to the valley. snow up in the sierra. finally we will get some. it started the month off pretty good. we had two really good systems friday and again on sunday into monday. since then we have shut the door. it looks like it will be -- it will be colder as well as we get into saturday and sunday.

some of the low cloud deck is tough to see. most of the higher clouds stay south but you can see the leading edge move into the picture here but it's still a couple days away. over all we are looking for cold lows for some. not as cold as yesterday. we had a lot of low 30s. today it's more upper 40s. yesterday 40s and 50s for others. sonoma at 38 degrees. 37 lake port. healdsburg. windsor. sebastopol at 39. hang win at 1700 feet is 45. really the cold temperatures aren't the biggest story. it's the next system that is coming out of texas. snow there is going to be about 4-8 inches. freezing rain or mix precip ahead of it. deep south, ohio valley, all the way into the carolinas and then points north. it will be a mess. and also for denver. i mentioned denver because they are zeroing in on the snowiest

february ever. possibility of 3-8 inches of snow. they had 17 inches of snow this february. the record is 22. so they are very close to a record and i think they will get it. you can see that little ripple. that has enhanced the fog a little bit. so low clouds it's cool to cold. but not as cold. sunny, mostly sunny and mild. mild to warm inland. upper 60s and 70s there. but for other areas it will be in the low 60s. so if you are by the water a little bit cooler. 60s to 70s. clear lake, also santa rosa. also for pittsburgh, antioch, and brentwood. 66 oakland. 67 santa cruz. same for san jose, saratoga at 68. low 60s on the coast. mid 60s on the peninsula. fog on the increase thursday. friday into saturday with some light rain but it will be a more of a snow event for the sierra. >> which is good. they can definitely use it. right now it is 6:51. and there was this is

welcome back to mornings on 2. time is 6:54. there is fear about the fate of at lease 150 syrian christians that were kidnapped in north eastern syria. they kidnapped them on monday. there are more than 10,000 syrians living in the bay area. many of them immigrated here trying to get away from persecution. they have been deeply and heavily purse cuted because of their religion and ethnicity. they are indigenous to iraq, turkey, iran, and syria. former marine has been found guilty of killing american sniper author chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield. the defense had argued that eddie routh was having a psychotic episode when he turned his weapon on kyle and littlefield in february of 2013. but prosecutors said that whatever episode routh suffered from was brought on by drinking and marijuana. it took jurors less than three

hours to hand down the verdict and after the trial littlefield's mother spoke to reporters outside the courthouse. >> we just want to say that we've waited two years for god to get justice for us on behalf of our son and as always god has proved to be faithful. >> the judge sentenced routh to prison without the possibility of parole. they have decided not to pursue civil rights charges against george zimmerman for the shooting death of trayvon martin. zimmerman was acquitted of second degree murder. he claimed it was self-defense. the justice department says there is not enough evidence that zimmerman used force against martin because of his race. hillary clinton was tight lipped about plans to run for president while she was at the women's conference in silicon valley.
