high-speed chase that started in sacramento ends in the east bay in a dramatic crash and police sweep of a neighborhood in martinez. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. four people are in custody in martinez after a high-speed chase that started in the sacramento area. ktvu fox 2's brian flores is live in martinez to explain why details are rather slow in coming out. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: hi, tori. good afternoon to you. well, according to the chp, the reason why that is because

there are several other law enforcement agencies investigating this case. it could lead to other cities, perhaps other states. we are on arthur road off 680 in martinez. right behind me is where the contract crashed earlier this morning. police caught the four people they believe were in the car at the time but the question right now is what else? what other crimes were these people involved in? investigators continue to delve deeper into the backgrounds of four suspects caught earlier this morning and what times they were involved with in the past. what we do know, they led the california highway patrol on a high-speed chase that started before 2:00 a.m. in the sacramento area and ended with them crashing an fleeing from officers off arthur road in martinez. >> the initial information we received was that that vehicle was armed and dangerous. so we immediately set up a containment. once that vehicle collided with the fence. >> reporter: to get the car to slow down, the chp says they rolled out a spike strip on southbound 680 near bayshore with no rubber on the tires,

the driver pulled off on arthur road, realized he couldn't turn and crashed into a fence. four suspects ran away. three were caught immediately. but a fourth remained on the loose for a couple of hours this morning. scary moments for this homeowner. >> very nervous. i have children and watching out for everybody and my neighbor across the street, he lives alone. he's in his 80s. >> reporter: the chp and contra costa sheriffs had to set up a perimeter that extended down pacheco boulevard. he says his neighbors saw one of the suspects hiding in his yard. >> i guess the suspect went past him and took off. >> reporter: he was caught with the help of k-9 units scouring the neighborhood. what remains unclear it is the crimes these forecommitted. sources originally said they might be involved in an armed robbery and the car may have originated in colorado. but chp couldn't confirm those details. >> we had an armed and dangerous vehicle coming our way. there was an active pursuit.

they were coming into our jurisdiction. that's when betook over -- when we took over. we're helping out in the investigation. we'll probably turn it over to allied agencies due to the fact that it seems like there's some other extenuating circumstances that happened in other jurisdictions. >> reporter: and that's where we stand at this hour as we take it back out here live. overall, chp says no injuries to officers or other drivers luckily on the freeway. we do expect more information to come out this afternoon. tori, back to you. >> thank you, brian. the search for a missing infant northwest of sacramento has come to a tragic end after the discovery of a baby boy's body. authorities have not yet positively identified the body but it's believed to be 20-day- old justice reese e and his mother 23-year-old samantha green disappeared saturday. she was found yesterday in nights landing in yolo county. authorities say she was

hysterical and very disor reernted -- disoriented. the child's body was discovered this morning in a waterway in yolo county. crews from marin and contra costa county helped in the search. officials have not yet determined the cause of death. the chuck driver accused of causing a metro link train to derail and crash in southern california reportedly has previous driving citations, including a dui conviction in arizona. investigators say the truck was not stuck on the tracks in vernt county yesterday morning when it was hit by a metro link train. the truck burst into flames and the impact caused three of the train's five cars to derail. the 54-year-old truck driver was arrested about a mile away from the crash scene. >> his name is jose alejandra sanchez ramirez. he was a truck driver for a company and he was driving the

vehicle in question. he was taken into custody for a felony hit-and-run violation. >> he is set to appear in court tomorrow. the l.a. times reports that he pleaded guilty to drunk driving in 1998 and had at least two other later citations. at least 28 people were hospitalized in the accident including four people listed in critical condition. but no one was killed. metro link officials say safety improvements probably reduced the number of injuries in yesterday's crash. back in 2008, a head-on crash between a metro link train and a freight train in chats worth left 25 people dead. that led metro link to investigate in new statist of the art rail cars built to absorb the impact of an accident. a deadly crash at a caltrain crossing in menlo park is prompting cars for new safety measures along the tracks. a 35-year-old bomb from east palo alto was killed on monday when her suv became boxed in by

traffic at the ravenswood avenue crossing. people in the area say the intersection often gets backed up and can get confusing. caltrain says the solution may be what's called grade separation where traffic crosses above or below the tracks. >> any time a pedestrian or vehicle has to cross the tracks there is a safety concern. so it would be a significant imprompt -- improvement. >> menlo park is working on this. burlingame and palo alto are also considering similar measures. we're following developing news in the east bay where several high school students have taken ill on campus. the albany fire department says two ambulances were called to albany high school about 11:00 a.m. at least three students got sick after ingesting an unknown substance. we don't yet know what the

substance is. crews are assessing the students right now. we have a crew on the way and we'll update you as we get more information. a jury in texas has convicted a former marine in the shooting deaths of american sniper chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield. the verdict was announced late last night and today we're hearing part of the testimony from chris kyle's widow. fox news correspondent jackie ibanez has that and the emotional reaction to the verdict. >> we the issfind the defendant eddie ray routh guilty of the felony offense of capital murder as charged in the indictment. >> reporter: a follow form -- a former marine is convicted in the sniper trial. the jury rejecting arguments that he was insane when he shot littlefield and chris kyle. >> we waited two years for god to get justice for us on behalf of our son and we're so

thrilled that -- that we have the verdict, that we have tonight. >> reporter: kyle and littlefield were murdered at a texas gun range in february 2013. during the trial, defense attorneys argued that at the time of the killing, routh was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder but prosecutors said regardless of his condition routh still knew right from wrong. >> the defense had a tough time. they knew that the chances of this jury in texas or anywhere for that matter going along with the defense's theory was probably so low it approached no real value. >> reporter: we're getting our first chance to hear testimony from kyle's widow following the release of audio. >> that we loved each other and gave a kiss and a hug like always did. >> prosecutors did not seek the

death penalty against routh. he will spend life in prison without the possibility of parole. lawmakers are scrambling to put together a deal to fund the homeland security before current funding runs out. senate democrats have been holding firm blocking any bill that strips the department of enforcing immigration reforms made by president obama last year through executive action. majority leader mitch mcconnell is now offering up a clean funding bill separating out the immigration debate. however, over in the house of representatives it's not clear what house republicans are willing to accept. travelers at oakland airport experienced flight disruptions after southwest was forced to ground about a fifth of its fleet. the airline says it missed required safety inspections of backup rudder systems. southwest says when it discovered the problem yesterday, it immediately took 28 planes out of service and began checking them. that caused about 80 flight

cabdriver. the driver picked up this well- dressed passenger the day after valentine's day in san francisco. he dropped him off near the cal palace. the passenger refused to pay his fare. when the driver got out to confront the man, the passenger started to punch and kick him. dro showed the video to -- we showed the video to some passengers. they say it's not unusual. >> it hanked a lot to me -- it happened a lot to me. some crazy guy get in and try to attack me. they don't want to pay me. >> this surveillance video shows several people walking or driving by while this attack is happening. the driver who was beaten had to be hospitalized for various injuries but is expected to be okay. anyone with information about the attack is asked to call daly city police. researchers say marijuana is the drug least likely to kill people who use it. that's according to a study in the journal scientific report.

it compared lethal doses of legal and illegal substances with how much a typical person uses. it found the risk of death by alcohol is 114 times higher than that of canny -- canfully -- cannabis. but some doctors say it's the habitual use of marijuana, especially by teens, that poses the real problem. >> the long-term use is associated with depression as well as cognitive or learning problems. that could affect them in schools, relationships, going forward, integrating into society. the study found alcohol was also more dangerous than heroin, cocaine, tobacco, and ecstasy. some researchers argue those opposed to the legalization of marijuana might be better off shifting their focus to alcohol abuse. right now, thousands of california students are filling the s.a.p.

you can ski looking out toward mt. diablo -- see looking out toward mt. diablo. the tree not moving too much. as a result, we have light wind. winds around 5, 10 miles an hour. on stormtracker2, we have cloud up to the north but not much in the way of organized rainfall. in fact, here is the latest on the satellite a few clouds and maybe a few showers to the north and west of eureka. that's about it. as far as current numbers statewide, you can see 60s showing unin los angeles, in san diego, redding. 65 degrees. monterey in the upper 50s and here is a look at the bay area temperatures showing you some warm ones already. san francisco, 62. san jose, 6. fair field in the upper 50s and santa rosa after that school start this morning back up into the lower 60s. more sunshine for today. more clouds, though, for your friday. look at this. we finally track a few changes. not the storm we need but at least we'll bring in more clouds and the chance of a few spotty showers as we head into the weekend.

here you can see the overall layout, high pressure warming up the entire state over the past few days. this moves in for friday and into saturday. at least for today and tomorrow we have the dry weather forecast, we'll be mild. the readings in the 60s to the lower 70s and then friday and saturday here is that area of low pressure dropping to the south. so with that, there is a slight chance of a shower on friday but i'm thinking a better bet into saturday. not enough to cancel your plans. in fact, the forecast models generating/100ths or 2/100ths. and cooler temperatures out there as well. here's the forecast model showing you this -- a lot of sunshine, once again, for your thundershowers. on friday, more cloud. you can see a few popup showers. kind of missed in the bay area. there is a slight chance into friday and saturday and then there is the chance of a few scattered showers. temperatures for this afternoon already showing you some milder temperatures for the 12:00 hour. by 4:00, the warmest locations back up into the lower 70s for

stocks little change after the dow and s&p 500 closed at record highs da to janet yellen -- da to janet yellen. apple says it will appeal a $532 million verdict handed down yesterday in a patton infringement case in texas. according to bloomberg a company called smart flash claimed apple's itunes violated patents. some call smart flash a patent troll because it's used in the same vague patent to file lawsuits against amazon, google and samsung. an. said they make no products and have no employees and exploiting loopholes in the patent system. two people remain in critical condition this morning

and more than a dozen others are hurt after a house exploded in the jersey shore community of stafford township. take a look as the explosion was caught on a police dash cam as a gas leak blew the home apart yesterday. police, firefighters and utility workers were trying to evacuate the area and find the leak when the explosion happened. so quickly the explosion, we had debris all around us, it comes from nowhere. >> very lucky, you know, it could have traveled up more. >> the 15 people who were hurt are a new jersey gas worker, firefighters and emts. police say there's nothing left of the that ex -- of the house that exploded. we're still trying to learn more about that chase that ended in a dramatic crash in martinez. it's a story we told you about at the top of this newscast. authorities still being very tight-lipped about the case. exactly why the people were on the run. we're talking to investigators
