county. yesterday the baby's mother was found. searchers went out on foot and atvs and searched through the night discovering the body before 10:00 a.m. this morning. they are now working to try to figure out the cause of death. investigators are trying to figure out what sent five middle school students the hospital, it is possibly they ingested some type of pills. ktvu's mike mibach is there now. what have you found out? >> reporter: oakland where the students were taken. no word from officials about the condition of the students. the fire department said the students are expected to live. the school district tonight very tight lipped about what led up to the medical emergency. the fire department saying it was 11:15 a.m. when they got the call to head to albany middle school. the superintendent telling us it was staff at the school who

received information about 5 female students ingesting pills. we asked what information they received but the incident did not reveal that and did not say what type of pills the students took. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> i do not know that. i believe they were all conscious. i cannot confirm if they started that way or remained that way. >> the mood, we are concerned for our families. we are a fall community and -- small community and we are a namally. >> the -- family. >> reporter: the incident said the school hasn't had problems with drug use this year and the police department is investigating this incident to see if a crime may have been committed. >> again, tonight we still don't know whether the pills they may have taken were illegal or perhaps legal pills. >> reporter: could have been

vitamin c, tylenol, ecstasy. we don't know. that is why there are two investigations, the police department and the school district. >> mike mibach in oakland tonight. thank you. tonight investigators are working to find out if five people arrested in the east bay this morning are connected to a crime spree in colorado. it began as a pursuit this morning. officers spotted the car with five people inside believed to be on the run from sacramento and tied to a smash and grab robbery of a jewelry store in denver. the chase ended with a crash in martinez. the people inside took off running into the neighborhood. putting people who live there on edge. >> step outside and see five or six police cars and they are telling you to stay put. you get anxious. then i founds out what was going on. got really nervous for everybody. >> the man hunt ended when officers caught all five suspects. the chp says officers found

weapons and a significant amount of stolen property, including jewelry in the vehicle. a man was sentenced today to 57 years to life in prison for shooting a oakland police officer two years ago. prosecutors say nathaniel cook shot it officer in the leg and a second man during a crime spree. police say the officer continued to chase nathaniel cook despite being shot. his attorney said he had mental issues because of drug use. homeowner escaped a fire today that started in his garage about 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. firefighters say the home owner and a housekeeper were upstairs when he heard popping stairs. they both got out but he did suffer burns. firefighters estimate the damage at $100,000. they say the fire may have started inside a bmw inside the garage.

they say it appears this fire was accidental. new at 6:00 p.m. tonight a new tool for firefighters in piedmont. a fire truck to replace the current one that is a quarter of a century old. >> firefighters got to train on that new equipment today and ktvu's allie rasmus went along for the ride. >> reporter: it is part of the daily routine. a call comes in. wheels and hoses roll out. but there is nothing routine about this job. >> down all the way. we will raise the ladder up. >> reporter: when he goes to work, this is his view. >> i can see into the bay pretty well from here. >> reporter: nearly 7 stories up and now this ladder truck is his new office.

he goes the effects first hand. >> we would santa cruz go out -- just go out riding. . >> reporter: he battled adhd as a child. >> i was always put in the dumbest classrooms and stuff like that. >> his son was diagnosed with the same disorder. >> dad, this makes me feel terrible. i said, son, don't take it. and so then we started to ride together. >> reporter: that set the wheels in motion. he started a foundation, creating a biking program at two schools in 2012. looking into the effects of bikest on those with adhd. -- biking on those with adhd.

>> students scores improved after asking cycled. >> the program is in two schools in california and hopefully a third very soon. the foundation has a goal by 2017 to have the program in 100 schools nationwide. >> i would like to be part of the catalyst that is the change. that we look back and go, we don't need ritalin. what we need to do is be active. >> reporter: they plan to invest $1 million for the program. which will be part of the initiative for healthier america. paul chambers, ktvu fox 2 news. more than half a century, that is how long san francisco's holdest police officer has been on the job. -- oldest police officer has been on the job in san francisco. that is about to change. he is retiring. ktvu's noelle walker with his story. >> reporter: outside commission
