it's february 28th, saturday i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike me back. up in the sierra it's a little different story. >> we'll see a few isolated showers at home today. as we get into the sierra that's where they're picking up some much needed snow. let's talk about what's happening outside of our doors first. the unis up and seening, partly cloudy skies and a few passing showers and the possibility of a thunderstorm not out of the question for today. giving you a look at storm tracker 2. you can see it's off the san mateo coastline. we have a few showers over the santa cruz mountains and we have light showers falling this morning along highway 101, you can expect to see some of this. san jose has a few scattered showers in the last hour or so. we have the hit or miss

showers. it's not enough to cancel the outdoor plans. but, by noon we have scattered showers, we have a few popping up over the north bay. we're, now, into 4:00 in the afternoon and there's more of the same. hit or miss showers. most of us will be partly cloudy and mainly dry. some of us will have the rainfall and it will pass through. you'll be dry once again. as you get into the evening hours, it will dry and it's partly cloudy and temperatures running cooler this morning by 5 or 10 degrees. scattered showers will be in the forecast and isolated thunderstorms. the other part of this story, the sierra snow. i'll take a look at your numbers and we'll talk about the snow falling this morning coming up. we want you to get you up to speed on the breaking news in the city of oakland. this is live from the roof camera you can see a lot of smoke had smoke. there's a lot of smoke and

there's a fire. they're on the scene trying to battle this fire. details are sketchy at this point. we have folks in the newsroom making phone calls. right now oakland fire, battling a warehouse fire on east 12th. we'll bring you up to speed as soon as we get null details into the newsroom. new this morning, a major development in the case of that 20-day old boy who disappeared and turned up dead. the sheriff's deputies have arrested the child's mother. she and her baby were reported next day, she was located near a waterway and she was crying and distraught. they found the baby that same day, wednesday. they're going it talk about the arrest and an autopsy on the new born found no obvious signs of trauma, but more testing will be conducted to see if he

drowned or died of hypothermia. discovery of a suspicious device near a middle school. they sealed off the 23rd and bart let's streets, it happened at 8 last night. a shelter was ordered for nearby residents, a member of a bomb squad put on a device that had a timer and wires sticking out. a robot was there to analyze the object. the bomb technicians determined it was a hoax, but certainly that bomb scare rattled some nerves. >> the officers on patrol, it was brought to their attention and then efforts were made immediately to seal the block in the interests of public safety. >> the suspicious device was found along horace mann middle school. it was shut down. a shutdown of the department of homeland security was funded for now. they decided to fund the

department for one week. it does not include language repealing the executive actions on immigration. they see the stopgap measure for moderate democrats. they want to use homeland security funding as a way to roll back the immigration reforms. >> it's hard to see the goal they're trying to reach, the conservatives who insist on trying to llaso the president for the power of the purse. democrats and republicans are no closer to a long-term deal. homeland security's quarter million of employees are caught in the middle of this political tug of war. airport agents and tsa and people will have to go to work and they won't be paid until the stalemate is resolved. >> it's unbelievable that someone else's decisions can have an impact on my own

family. >> there's no funding agreement coast guard personnel would have to stay on the job without pay. 30,000 homeland security employees would be furloughed, an estimated 80% of the work force at fema. the sierra, the winter weather has returned to northern california. this is south lake tahoe this morning. it looks like there's decent coverage out there. temperatures are chilly on the mountain but not a bad day to hit those slopes. if you're thinking about heading to tahoe, we should tell you bring the chains with you because road restrictions are in place on interstate 80. they're required and you have to have snow tires. the restrictions start at king veil. the next survey is around the corner -- snowstorm, it's not going to be a great one with

seats. probably more comfortable than you would find on an airplane. we have with us jeff, the vip of communications for the san hoe aearthquakes, they've been around for 20 years, this stadium was privately financed, obviously this sport is getting more popular here. >> yes, it's growing everywhere. we had 5,000 season ticket holders and now, we have 112,000 season ticket holders. the we'll see the popularity increasing every year. >> there's other teams across the country like this, they're becoming more popular as well. >> the average has passed the nhl and the nba. there are big crowds across the country. >> for people on the fence about whether or not to check this out, maybe they're kind of sort of soccer fans but they don't know if they want to go to a game how would you sell it? >> it's a unique experience. it creates a unique experience,

it's community based and we have a intimate setting and you can be connected to the action at all times. we have the steepest bowl in our league so fans can feel connected. you are right next to the action. we have these field side seats that are nice and unique and we have field side suites and we have a different atmosphere than other stadiums. >> the other thing he pointed out to me earlier, with soccer you can really schedule to watch a game because there's a hard start and a hardening and it's two hours no matter what. there's no such thing as overtime. they think people who may be considering going to a soccer game should come in and check it out. >> it looks great. thank you. well, the hosts for super bowl 50, the host committee i should say is fulfilling its pledge to help the community. it's donating 2.5 million to help mostly young people. organizers are hoping to raise

and donate $10 million to bay area charities over next year. >> the california highway patrol is in concord today, not just looking for speeders but new recruits, they're looking at it and they're hoping to find more women applicants. qualified candidates will have a chance to enroll in the chp academy. they must be between 20.5 to 35 years old. the career starts at 10:00 this morning. starbucks is launching a program to help veterans and their familiar lips. they hope to hire 10,000 veterans who are of it in the military reserve by 2018. farmer is part of the military family. he had been searching for a job for nine months. >> i've dealt with every kind of personality, every kind of person that i've been working here, it's opened my eyes a lot and got me back out there.

a vehicle. it delayed the park north side by a month for opening. teenagers vandalized a kindergarten classroom. they broke in the night before valentine's day. >> an hey harm alerted a district employee. that person went to the school and reported seeing about 100 teens run off. >> there's genuine worry and concern about their exposure, and the lack of security and the fact that this has been an ongoing issue for a number of years. police say on monday edison elementary school which was on lockdown, a man walked across and he was reportedly trying to steal purses, no one was hurt in any incident. what should we see in the bay area. >> we have a combination of weather going on out there. we have partly cloudy skies, she has scattered showers we saw earlier this morning. that will be the pattern for

your afternoon as we get into the second half of the day. the scattered showers, at least the isolated once ones will continue. that shot in san francisco says it all. take a look at those building clouds there. so the storm moving right over california this morning and into the afternoon, not a lot of moisture, but carrying quite a bit of instability. in addition to scattered showers we will have a possibility of a few isolated thunderstorms, and that means brief heavy downpour, maybe a little bit of small hail. notice the moisture staying out over the pacific and if i squeeze in closer we have showers across here in san jose and the last 24 hours, the only areas to pick up any amount of rain, santa cruz mountains have picked up 2/10ths afternoon mount diablo has picked up a

few 100ths. before we get to the sierra we're looking at anywhere 3-6 inches expected here. the snow levels are lower than what we've seen in quite sometime. that's good news. there's a winter weather advisory. if you're going to be traveling until about 4:00 this morning for areas of lake tahoe it could last longer for the west slope, it's 5 to 10 inches are expected when all is said and done between yesterday, today and there may be a possibility of a few scattered showers all the way from monday into the sierra. winds generally light and breezy even windy for some of us in oakland where we're tracking that fire that's burning at the warehouse, a northwesterly breeze which means the smoke is going to go in this direction. see it and smell it, 37 degrees in napa, a cold start for most of us.

50 in oakland, 52 at sfo and less than 50 at half moon bay. a possibility of scattered showers and the 59 in oakland and 59 san mateo and livermore, it will be a partly cloudy and cool day. sunday we're drying out and breezy conditions are expected, temperatures will remain on the cool side, mid-60s when we get into tuesday and wednesday with partly cloudy conditions. there's a model or two that wants to bring a few scattered showers into the neighborhood, but it doesn't look like much if any at all of the so we have mostly cloudy skies. >> i was hoping for rain. >> i know, what can we do. >> sierra is good at least. the display of flashing lights on the bay bridge is going to be temporarily turned off in just a few days. 20,000 lesd lights were installed in the western span as part of the light sculpture of the world. they're going to turn them off on march 5th because they need

to do work on the cables and they're going to install longer lasting lights. the bridge light show should be back in time for super bowl 50 next year. they've been approved for testing. the bridge approved 1.5 million for testing. they hope to get the beds out for next year. a plea for help physical a disturbing case of animal cruelty. the reward to find the person who threw two dogs from the car. google is looking to build and expansion and why there is competition to build it.

they have a set amount of permits for parking. the park will hold a lottery for 250 permits and they'll be held mid-april. after the preseason, 50 more permits will be also available by lottery the 2015 half dome season is expected from may 22nd through october 2nd. google has submitted a propose pal for a face -- proposal for a face-lift. it shows canopies, space age, that are capable to move around. they can be tailored for the people using them. >> it's like the link on logs -- lincoln logs when we were kid. you can build them up and move them around.

picture that firefighters just sent down. the mother of a three-week old baby found dead is under arrest. deputies say she and her baby justice rees turned up on tuesday. the body was found in a slew, relatives and friends have been defending green. congress has given itself one more week for a long-term bill to fund homeland security. if funding runs out 30,000 employees will be furloughed while airport screeners and border patrol screeners would remain on the job without pay until a deal is reached. i'm claudine wong hanging out in the weather center. rosemary, can we get more rain? >> i wish i could tell you that. some of us will feel a little

bit of rain and some of us will be completely dry. do you need to cancel baseball practice or soccer, will i get rained out. most of us will not see rain, but i cannot guarantee you won't have a shower pop up and come down on you. the clouds are indicating the instability in the air. when we get the mix, we have the possibility of thunderstorms as well. that means the heavy downpour, maybe even a little bit of small hail in the forecast for some of us today. today we have the radar beams going and we've been watching scattered showers move across the shore. san jose reported a few scattered showers earlier, that's about it through the morning hours. santa cruz is one of the only spots to pick up 2/10th of an inch of rain in the last 24 hours. the sierra is getting much needed snow, as i push you through saturday here we are at lunchtime. it seems hit or miss.

i really can't say that we're going to see light rain at noontime right over tracy because that's just how this pattern works. it gives us an indication that we will have the possibility there, and as we get into 4:00, it's still with us, especially over the southern half of our bay area viewing areas. we get into the afternoon and evening hours, right after sunset, it will begin to taper off and sunday looks like it will be a mostly dry day. so, in a nutshell here, scattered showers in the forecast, it will be partly cloudy, the risk of a thunderstorm or two moving through here at as well. that's what we have. the bigger better part of the story is the sierra where they're picking up much needed snow because this is a colder system. we'll talk about what's happening in the sierra and line up the afternoon highs for today coming up. >> thanks, rosemary. yesterday's windy weather up rooted a large tree, it fell down the restaurant. luckily no one was hurt and

cleanup crews had to cut that tree up to smaller pieces and brought in a crane to remove the debris. another storm is leaving whiteout conditions in parts of indiana and illinois. the snow has extended as far south as texas. they are predicting another big storm hitting the southwest will bring rain and snow to southern california this weekend. 10,000 flags have been can -- nights have been cancelled across the states this week. including 140 flights today. this is a much different situation in the bay area airports. we got off the phone with the airport duty manager. no issues are there at this time. if they get rain today it could cause maybe a few delays out there. central valley farmers won't get any federal water for

a second year. they may have to find other sources of water to plant their fields. it comes from the orrville and she's at that reservoirs. orrville is at 70% of its historical afternoon. all that water is spoken for. it's a set back for farm ners this state economy. >> we have a vibrant agricultural economy in the state of california and it will affect the prices of food. this is more than what they got last year, but still, it's a fraction of what they want. the sonoma county's sheriff's office is investigating the death of an 84-year-old. her home was in complete disarray. they're investigating this case as a homicide. authorities say a man who came to the home on thursday found her dead in a chair. she had lived there for decades with her brother.
