. cold, unsettled weather blows through the bay area, leaving hail and rain here and snow in the sierra. >> and the mother of a newborn found dead in yolo county is arrested in connection with the boy's death. . good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. it was a mixed bag of weather around the bay area today. much of the bay was covered in ominous gray clouds, even a few lightning strikes. in other parts of the bay area, hail. the person living at this house in sonoma county grabbed a camera to get these shots of a

brief hail storm. ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is here with a look at this erratic weather system. mark? a bit of everything today and the conditions are changing rapidly. of course february 2015 has been very quiet, at least the first week we had a few storms to talk about. but it's been a dry stretch up until today. an active weather day today. in fact, this picture you'll see coming up, this was the scene just to the east of san jose, with hail, thunderstorm development this afternoon, almost making it look like snow out there in parts of the south bay. here's the latest right now on live storm tracker 2 radar. the circulation, the activity moving in from the north and the east. there's the all the snow coverage in the sierra, a very nice snow producer up there. here's a closer look at our local radar. this is the loop over the past hour. not as much coverage in the north bay, of course a different story earlier today, especially toward petaluma. thunderstorms moving into parts of the peninsula.

san mateo, there's a san mateo bridge and also lightning strike close to south san francisco. heavier downpours associated with this guy around brisbane at last check. coming in tight, here come the street level. as you can see, toward airport boulevard and sierra point parkway, more active weather. and then to the south, show you more activity toward palo alto, los altos, sunnyvale as well, with the rain showers, possibly thunder in this region. we do have a break in the weather for tomorrow. so still showers in the forecast for tonight. a bit of a break for tomorrow. then another system could move in with the monday forecast. more in a few minutes. >> thank you, mark. the latest storm dropped more than a foot of snow in the sierra and they are loving it. northstar says it received 16 inches of snow as of this morning. skiers and snowboarders wasted no time getting up on the slopes there. overnight temperatures are expected to dip down into the low 20s and a few more inches of snow expected overnight. here's what it looked like about an hour ago on highway 50

the echo summit. if you are headed to the sierra, be sure to carry chains. cal trans says chains are required over the mountain passes on interstate 80 and highway 50. late this afternoon, in the north bay, a chp helicopter crew was dispatched to rescue a man who fell off a cliff. the man fell about 30 feet down a cliff near arch rock at the point reyes national sea shore. he is reported as being 24 years old. police have not provided any more details about him or the status of that rescue. the san francisco fire crews were also called out today to fort funston after a man and his dog fell down a cliff. a viewer sent us this video from the rescue operation today. the victim says that his dog fell down the cliff. when he went to look for him, the ground beneath him crumbled and he fell, too. neither the dog nor the owner was hurt. san jose police are looking for two drivers after a fatal crash that left a teenager dead and two other young people hurt. the accident happened around 3:15 this morning near hills

dale and meridian avenue. cristina rendon explains how the crash happened and why neighbors are calling for change. >> reporter: the shattered glass and littered debris at this san jose intersection has a the lot of people talking about what happened here. >> it's so sad. it's just so, so sad. >> reporter: police say two drivers were racing westbound on hills dale avenue early saturday morning. as they approached meridian avenue, one car lost control, spun sideways and hit a light pole, coming to a stop near this rite aid. three people were ejected from the car. a teenager boy died and two other minors were seriously hurt. police say after the crash, the driver of the car left the three victims behind and took off, along with the second driver. both are at large. >> running away, it's like, oh, my god. you know, if the other individuals were conscious, they are going to see this. >> reporter: this woman keeps her boys close outside. >> it's a dangerous crosswalk. >> reporter: worried about

street racers and care less drivers. >> there's a lot of speeding. people coming from capital expressway, i mean, they start speeding over there and they don't stop. >> reporter: annabel everett says moving forward, surveillance cameras should be installed on hills dale avenue to deter the problem. >> we've lived here only three years and we have known of four racing accidents that have happened, which is one too many accidents. >> reporter: she's equipping her home with cameras in just a few weeks. >> i think had we had the cameras up a little sooner, we could have been able to help in some way. >> reporter: police say alcohol and speed were factors in the crash. they are not releasing any descriptions of the drivers who left the scene. >> we feel sorry for the families and the kids that were involved. >> reporter: in san jose, cristina rendon, ktvu fox 2news. friends and family of an oakland teenager gunned down two years ago gathered today to remember him on what would have been his 15th birthday. lee weathers by was killed on

new year's eve 2013 as he walked home. less than three years later, his brother and childhood friend were both shot and killed as they sat in a car near their home. their mother told us today she could either be depressed about her two sons or she can keep on fighting for her children. >> not a day, not an hour, not a second goes by that i don't think of them. but getting up every day, honoring them, doing something in their memory, speaking of their lives and their legacies and what they meant to me and the community and the people they worked for, the people who knew them, it keeps me going. it keeps me going. >> police say they have a strong suspicion who killed weathers by, but they don't have enough evidence to take the case to court. crime stoppers is offering a $30,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. yolo county sheriff's deputies have arrested the mother of a 20-day-old infant reported missing last week, then found dead wednesday near

knights landing. there are still many questions in this case. >> reporter: yolo county investigators who have spent the past several days trying to make sense of the tragic and mysterious death of 20-day-old justice reece, arrested the infant's mother in the early morning hours. >> we have come to the conclusion that mrs. samantha green was the sole individual responsible for the death of her child. >> reporter: 23-year-old samantha greene and her baby were initially reported missing on monday. the following day, she was found frantic and confused near a slew in knights landing without her child. then, on wednesday morning, the baby's lifeless body was discovered in thick brush along the banks of that same slew. early reports indicate the infant died of either hypothermia or drowning. >> this is probably one of the top five worst situations i've personally been involved in or seen. >> reporter: it has been an emotional investigation for yolo county detectives, who interviewed several people in their attempt to piece together a story and a time line that

didn't fit. samantha green originally told them she was abducted and assaulted, one of many theories they looked into before making this arrest. >> the detectives involved on this have done their due diligence. we have been on this for 24/7 since we discovered that mrs. green was missing. it's an extraordinarily tragic story. we know that. it affects all of us, officers include. >> reporter: while there are still many questions left unanswered, the sheriff says he is proud of the work his investigators have done in a case involving the youngest of victims. >> yolo county prosecutors have yet to say what charges they will file against green, who remains in custody. a three-alarm fire swept through a warehouse today in oakland's fruitvale district. the fire started just before 7:00 this morning on east 12th street near 42nd avenue. a fire department spokesman says the blaze was difficult to fight because there was a large

amount of wood inside. fire officials estimate the damage at about half a million dollars. there were no reports of any injuries. no word on what sparked this fire. fire also destroyed about 100 port a potties in a storage facility in heyward. flames erupted just after midnight near industrial parkway and pacific street. the pictures that you see here were posted by the heyward fire department on its facebook page. the department spokesman says it appears the fire started inside one of those port a potties, then quickly spread to the others. investigators are looking into whether transients started the fire. no one was injured. hundreds of bay area teenagers helped out the homeless today in a very practical way. they gathered at oakland's temple hill church to assemble hygiene kits. each kit contains toothpaste, socks, sun block, and other essential items. it's the third year for the project, which has distributed thousands of kits on bay area streets. the project spokesperson says it's not only good for the homeless, it's providing life lessons for the teens.

>> how to approach life, how to serve, how to think about others. it's a chance to kind of turn off the cell phone, get together and do something good. >> project homeless says last year, one of the teens saw a homeless man using one of their kits and the teen said the experience showed him the value of helping others. new jersey governor chris christie is on the fund-raising trail here in california. this afternoon, he spoke in sacramento at the state gop spring convention. christie's main theme stressed what he calls explaining the hard truth to the american people; among them, the economy. >> americans at the middle ladder of our income now earn less adjusted for inflation than they did in the year 2000. [ applause ] >> christey did not do well today at a conservative straw poll at the cpac convention in washington, dc. he placed 10th in a field of 13 potential gop candidates. kentucky senator rand paul won that straw poll for the

third year in a row. wisconsin governor scott walker placed second, followed by senator ted cruz from texas and florida former governor jeb bush. after today's results were announced, rand paul promised to make the gop a bigger, better and bolder party. in his speech yesterday at the conference, the doctor-turned- senator promised to repeal obama care. a new program started yesterday in san francisco that allows some centers and disabled people to ride muni for free. san francisco transportation officials approved the free passes back in january. >> we do this because the need is so great. you see it all the time in the city. low income folks, moderate income folks, struggling to make it. we're very aware of that. we want to do our part to help. >> it will cost $4 million a year to fund this program. the plan received unanimous approval from the board of directors.

the san jose earthquakes faced off against the l.a. galaxy today in the first game in the team's brand-new home. avia stadium near san jose international airport seats 18,000 people. attendance at today's game was capped at 10,000 so that stadium managers could make sure that concessions, ticket sales and traffic all moved smoothly. the stadium features an open concourse, wi-fi, ground-level seating and an outdoor bar underneath a scoreboard with a direct view of the field. officials with the earthquakes say it is the largest outdoor bar in north america. >> all the different areas of the stadium were designed to have a fun experience. you don't even need to be a super soccer fan to enjoy it. ♪ >> the stadium took two years and $100 million of private money to build. today's preseason game with us a sellout. single-game tickets for the season opener coming up on march 22nd, are also sold out. we're told there are still a few hundred season tickets available and they start at

. a federal appeals court in massachusetts last night denied a request by lawyers of dhohar tsarnaev for a change of venue from boston. tsarnaev is accused in the boston marathon bombings and faces the death penalty. defense attorneys had argued the jury pool is tainted, that the strong emotions in the aftermath of the attacks. but the panel of three judges

disagreed, ruling 2-1 to deny the change of venue request. boris nemtsov was gunned down friday night on a moscow street, a day before he was set to lead a rally protesting russia's action in ukraine. the 55-year-old nemtsov was a former deputy prime minister in russia and one of president vladimir putin's vocal opponents. russian police say they are looking at a variety of motives for the attack. british scientists are testing a second ebola vaccine on humans. researchers say if the human trials prove successful, it will be the second vaccine from the uk sent to africa for testing. the first ebola vaccine trial was done at the university of oxford in center. dr. neil walker is one of 87 volunteers taking part in the second trial, which is partially funded by the european union. he says these trials will help

make a difference. >> there's a very small element of risk involved. but as i say, i put my trust in the science. it would be nice to know at the end of the study that i've contributed in a very small way to getting this vaccine out in the real world. >> the world health organization says there are four leading ebola vaccines currently being developed around the world and the more manufacturers get involved, the better the chances are of fighting the outbreak if another one occurs. britain's prince william traveled to fukushima today during his visit to japan. japan's prime minister led the duke of cambridge on a tour of an area nearly destroyed by the devastating earthquake and tsunami four years ago. william toured newly built playgrounds just 40 miles from the fukushima reactor. william heads next to china tomorrow. it will be the first visit to china by a senior member of the british royal family in three decades. back here at home, more than 200 people showed up for a job fair at municipal stadium

in san jose. that's the home of the minor league san jose giants baseball team. managers were looking to fill entry level positions with seasonal employees to handle everything from parking lot security and customer service to operating cameras at the ballpark. the team's president says the san jose giants offer baseball lovers a more affordable and accessible fan experience than a major league team. >> our cheapest tickets are single digits and, you know, the highest prices are 15 $15. it's very affordable. a family of four can come out and have a good time for $40. >> opening day for the san jose giants is on april 16. a severe ice storm today in texas caused about a thousand flights to be canceled nationwide. traffic at dallas/fort worth airport slowed to a crawl. it is a major hub, of course, for american airlines, which canceled most of today's flights and hundreds more for yesterday. on one flight to oklahoma city, passengers got stuck on the

tarmac for hours. bay area airports report 23 cancellations today, all by american airlines, along with a few delays. >> we had just a little taste, very little taste of that. did you hear the thunder last night? >> i didn't, but i heard you talking about it today. >> yeah, in the north bay, lot of rolling thunder. even this morning i heard rolling thunder. didn't see any lightning, though. >> right now we've been tracking lightning strikes the past few minutes. you just saw it. i was going to say, never works for live tv. >> but there it was! >> yeah. this is the camera, we talked about a thunderstorm closer to the brisbane area, so this camera is pointed to that area. there we go. perfect timing. we are tracking a thunderstorm moving through the area, to the southwest at 10 miles an hour. this developed right about between 5:45 and 6:00, slowly moving through this region. this -- we've been watching probably about 6 to 10 lightning strikes in this one particular image in the camera shot since we started the show at 6:00. so you can see things have quieted down at least the past few seconds.

but i suspect there will be more lightning strikes because we do have thunderstorms still in the area. you can see on live storm tracker 2 all the activity moving from the north and the east, heading to the south and west. you can see the overall motion rotating around the storm. here is a closer look at the system. here we go at the rain showers toward san mateo, and here's that one cell, moving south and west around 10 miles an hour. this is out toward brisbane, towards south san francisco. in fact, coming in tighter, those yellows and reds do correspond to heavier downpours, possibly hail. that's a fairly good bet within the cell toward hillside boulevard, as you can see in this region and out toward a few more areas, toward airport boulevard as well. and this is moving to the south and west. there's the latest, with the most intense storm across the bay area right now. of course we had more intense storms earlier today. coverage of the south bay, not as much action to show you. we had a pretty strong hail storm for this part of the bay area earlier this afternoon. still more activity between

woodside and mountain view and sunnyvale. we'll hold on to the showers, obviously in the short-term forecast. but things should be winding down later on tonight. that will set the stage for a dry sunday. look at all these snow reports toward the sierra. winter vieth advisory in place tonight until 10:00. snowfall accumulations really adding up. over 12 inches could be approaching 2 feet in a few spots up above 7000 feet. we'll keep an eye on growing snow totals. good news there. as far as current temperatures, lots of 50s across the bay area. forecast headlines, scattered showers for tonight, a dry sunday. there is a chance of a shower on monday. overnight lows, first thing tomorrow morning starting off the day in the 30s and the 40s. partly cloudy and cool. unsettled for today, as the system is moving out to the south. this will be a source of rain for southern california for sunday, but for us, just partly sunny skies. here's our forecast model tomorrow. just partly to mostly sunny skies. there is a chance of a pop-up shower in the south bay. but then we're tracking another system that approaches the

region. that will be on monday. increasing clouds and a chance of a shower by that timeframe. forecast highs for tomorrow, mainly in the 60s out there. so these numbers, a touch warmer than today. san jose, 63. look ahead at your five-day forecast, fairly quiet. just a chance of a shower on monday. pop-up in nature. then partly sunny skies by wednesday, but still active right now. we'll keep an eye on the radar and especially the cameras over the next hour. >> keep the camera rolling. >> for sure. >> thanks, mark. coming up, the golden state warriors unfortunately have one of their players suspended. >> and a report from the nfl says the 49ers want one of their offensive weapons to take a pay cut.

season. we've got news. stevie johnson is still a 49er. how long it holds true remains to be seen. multiple reports indicate the niners will ask johnson to take a pay cut or they will release him. the wide receiver was a good role player last season, 435 yards, three touchdowns, due to make $5.5 million in 2015. it has been a mournful couple of days in the nba. thursday, earl lloyd, the first african american player in league history, passed away at age 86. early this morning, former knicks standout anthony mason died of congestive heart failure at a manhattan hospital. mason, a 6' 7, 250-pound power forward, played in the '94 nba finals. he was sixth man of the year. anthony mason was just 48 years old. russell west brook will be sitting on his three straight triple-doubles for a while. he fractured a bone in his face
