. now from ktvu fox 2, this is the 10:00 news. a foot of snow falling into the sierra, giving a much- needed boot to the snow pack. lightning cracks in the bay area as thunderstorms roll throe. we even saw hail hit the ground in some cities. good evening i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne and this was the look across san josi 6:00 tonight, thick storm clouds and even a few cracks of lightning out there. >> the system british hail to the south and north bay and viewers in san josi and south san francisco sent us these pictures and some people got enough hail to build a snowman. >> in palo alto, how they felt

about the rain seemed to fend on where they were from. >> bay area residents welcomed their wet weather. folks from identity of town, not so much. >> i am not happy about the rain it's been raining and cold and horrible in new york for week and weeks and i game came to sunny california hoping to see my daughter and some sunshine. i got rain. >> because of the drought i'm happy about it, but i did promise sunny skies. >> i want a refund [ laughter ] >> well, all in all it didn't seem as if today's wet weather dampened anyone's spirits too much. >> let's bring in our meteorologist mark tamayo. >> very active day with strong storms developing. especially in the afternoon you probably noticed the cumulus clouds producing the hail, the hailstorms and as a result we had widespread hail across parts of region. wrapping up february very active. this is the scene looking out

towards the foothills of the east of the san josi and look at that hail accumulating on the hills. as far as the strongest storm of the day, we'll take the radar back to 6:00 and we're tracking this cell during the 6:00 news and around brisbane and south san francisco. this triggered a severe thunderstorm warning warning from the national weather service, producing hail and numerous lightning strikes that eventually moved out to the pacific and that warning expired at about 7:00 this evening a. here is the radar you can see over the past few hours. look at all of the activity really favoring first the northern parts of north bay this morning into the afternoon hours and things started to pop up in the south bay towards san josi, out towards parts of san francisco as well as we saw the thunderstorms for that part of the bay area. right now as you can see, not a lot of action out there. the live doppler sweeps, partly cloudy skies and lingering snow

showers in the sierra. so tomorrow, much different than today. it will be dry in your sunday forecast. i am tracking another system that can produce a few showers in the five-day. we have more coming up in a few minutes. thank you, mark. snow fell across much of the northern sierra, road crews worked to keep highway 80 open and some ski resorts report as much as 18" of snow. ed as the day wore on, the snow turned to rain, making it somewhat easier for drivers heading over the mountains. >> we started to put the chains on and were told by a driver you don't have to change up any knorr. so we lucked out big time. >> a check at the caltrans website show drivers need to have chains with them tonight on highway 80 while on highway 50 chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires from 5 miles east of meyers.

>> mark will be later in the newscast with his extended forecast. you can turn to the ktvu fox 2 weather team all weekend long, on-air and ontwitter and on fashion. the breaks in the weather brought out the hikers, but some of them got into trouble on some coastal bluffs. san francisco fire crews to rescue a man and his dog. the owner was trying to save miz pet when the cliff crumbled underneath him. >> she went over, i came to stand at the edge, and the ground just underneath me and i fell right behind. >> once they were safe, the owner and the dog reunite with the kiss as you see there. neither of them were hurt. crews performed two other rescues in the north day at .bonita and the headlands a. pair of hikers climbed and cun couldn't get back up. the hoist was used a marin

county and fire assisted in the rescue. >> at point reyes a 24-year- old man from gilroy suffered major injuries after falling off a cliff. there the chp said he fell 60- 80 feet on to the rock below and ricocheted into the surf. two good samaritans tried to help unwith w trapped by the surfment a chp helicopter ended up save all three. officials advise people to be careful on any cliff edge and instead of trying to rescue a pet or person who falls be sure to call 911. >> a young mother in yolo county is behind bars on suspicion of murder. she was arrested after her newborn was found dead earlier this week. as christian samos reports even hardened authorities are call this case a tough one are," yolo county investigators who have spent the past several days trying to make sense of the tragic and mysterious death of 20-day-old justice reis arrested the infant's mother in

the early morning hours. >> we have come to the conclusion that miss samantha green was the sole individual responsible for the death of her child. >> reporter: 23-year-old sam than green and her baby were initially reported missing on monday. following day she was found frantic and confused near a slew in knight's land without her child. on wednesday's morning the baby's lifeless body was discovered along the banks of that same slew. early reports indicate that the baby drowned of hyperthermia or drowning. it has been an emotional investigation for yolo investigators. samantha green told they she was abducted and assaulted before the arrest. >> detectives have done their due diligence and we haven this

for 24/7 since we discovered mrs. green was missing. it's an extraordinarily tragic story, we know that and it affects all of us, officers included. >> reporter: while there are still many questions left unanswered the sheriff says she is proud of the work his investigators have done in a case involving the youngest of victims. now as christian samos is reporting the sheriff says the district attorney will decide what exact homicide charges samantha green will face. in the north bay a suspected drunk driver led two deputies on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash and that driver died at the scene. it happened on southbound highway 101 in santa rosa just off the hern avenue exist. that is where kutv's debora villalon is live where the driver was surprisingly young, just 17. yes, heather and her fathers both injured are teenagers as well. we have noticed that people have put a few bouquets to

morning the young driver. why she didn't just pull over is something that investigators are trying to figure out. the end of a wild ride for the toyota compact that barreled into brush alongside the freeway. >> the driver died at scene. she was still in the car. >> reporter: chp responded to the high-speed crash after the driver lost control on an exit ramp, trying to lose a sheriff's deputies on her tail. >> they were aware that a deputy was behind them with their light on and to avoid being stopped. >> reporter: it was 1:30 a.m. and 12 miles to the north when the pursuit began. a sheriff's deputy tried to pull the toyota over for speeding, and off it went. waving and hitting speeds topping 100 miles per hour. a second sheriff's cruiser joined the chase in santa rosa. >> there is nothing routine or predictable about anything pursuit thats had ever

occurred. >> reporter: chp wasn't involved in the pursuit, but it's investigation afterwards that the driver was unlicensed with an open beer at her feet. there were other open containers and passengers said they were drinking. as to why they took out trying to out flashing red light. >> they were trying to evade lawsuit and it could have been avoid, this girl would is have been alive. >> reporter: car went out of control and into a ditch. neither the driver or her friend alongside her wore seat belts. >> a young man merchant back seat was belted. >> very young people, very young driver, very inexperienced drivers. >> reporter: the two girls are from ukiah and man from santa rosa. he has a neck fracture, but is expected to survive. a girl was ejected with cuts and broken arms, but given the

. san josi police continue to look for two drivers who were have racing that killed a young passenger and injured two others. that hit-and-run crash happened after 3:00 this morning near hillsdale and meridian avenue. ktvu's cristina rendon talk to neighbors who tell her they want to see changes on the street. >> reporter: the shattered glatt and debris at the intersection has a lot of people talking about what happened here? >> it's so sad. it's just so, so sad. >> reporter:

police say two drivers were racing westbound on hillsdale avenue earlier saturday mornings they approached meridian avenue, one car lost control, spun sideways and hit a light pole coming to a stop near this ride; right? aid. a teenaged boy died and two other minors were seriously hurt. police say after the crash the driver of the car left the three victims behind and took off long with the second driver, both of them are at- large. >> runningaway, it's like oh, my god, if the other individuals were conscious, they are going to see that. >> this neighbor keeps her two boys close outside. >> it's a pretty dangerous crosswalk. >> worried about street racers and careless drivers. >> there is a lot of speeding, i mean people coming from capitol expressway, they start speeding over there and just don't stop. >> reporter: annabelle says moving forward surveillance cameras should be

a 95-year-old world war ii veteran has been award a medal almost 70 years after his service in the army. charles brun of illinois received france' highest medal, the legion of honor. besides freeing the french from

homeless, it provides life lessons for these teens. >> how it to approach life? how to serve? how to think about others, just a chance to turn off the cell phones and do something good. >> one of the teens actually saw a holmes man using one of the kit and the teen says it showed him value of helping others. >> today the san jose earthquakes played their first- ever game in their brand-new home. the 18,000-seat stadium opened across the street from san josi airport. about 10,000 people headed to today's game to get their first feel of what the stadium is like. the stadium features an open concourse, wi-fi, ground-level seating and what is called the largest outdoor bar in america. >> all the different areas of the stadium are designed to have a fun experience. you don't even need to be a supersoccer fan to enjoy it. >> the stadium took two years and $100 million of private

attacks with billy clubs, whip and pepper-spray, but it's what happened two years earlier that touched off revolutions. >> here is the americans americans. >> reporter: in 1965 peaceful marchers demanding their right to vote are attacked by police in selma, alabama, this year marks the 50-year anniversary of what is known as bloody sunday. there is a hollywood movie playing and the media will surely swarm to selma like ants on a pile. we instead go north to birmingham, alabama, where two years earlier a desperate martin luther king whose most has stalled sends thousand of black teenagers and young adults into the streets to protest segregation. authorities responded with fire

from tahoe is that skiing in the sierra is fantastic this weekend. more than a foot of fresh snow and northern star received 16". a few more inches may be added tonight. skiers and boarders are taking advantage of the prime conditions on the slopes. >> it's been about three years, four years since we actually have good snow. it's about time, about time. >> boreal says 90% of the terrain is open and resorts are hoping had this is not the last big storm of the season. we all are. >> timing it perfectly and all of the fresh snow, huh mark? it's amazing what one storm could do and i was up there a couple of week ago and it's great to see the images. a little bit of a controversy and people thought we actually had snow out there.

anything is possibles, but snow levels locally here were up above 4,000'. so what we saw today was mostly in the form of hail. this is the thunderstorm cloud in the south bay, taken from sunnyvale this afternoon. what is happening, when you look at clouds, you have that updraft pushing air up. as you can see that is why it's called an "updraft." worker's comp the cloud we have basically circulating motion come up for you, and with that, the circulating motion we do have in fact, we're going to put this into motion for you now. here is what is happening. we have that ice growing and that updraft keeps the hail suspended. once they grow large enough they ran through the updraft and it falls to the ground as hail that. was the case for today. we also had some rainfall scattered across the bay area, but locally-heavy at times. pacifickia .36 and petaluma nearly' 25" and look at at

rainfall today across the bay area with at least the heavy downpours and lightning strikes out there. you can see on live stormtracker radar the circulation now basically heading towards southern california. it will be an active weather day tonight and into tomorrow across southern california. as you can see on live stormtracker 2, a closer look with a slight chance of a lingering shower but for the most part we're expecting mostly cloudy skies as that main energy does move to the south of region out towards the sierra, you can see all the snow showers from earlier today, the heavy snowfall, the winter weather advisory has expired out in the sierra. so things will be calming down down point in and expecting great conditions tomorrow. 1-2'. as far as overnight lows we're talking about 30s and 40s san

josi 45 degrees, san francisco 48. very unsettled for today, that area of low pressure diving to the south. with that decreasing shoulders and overnight lows will be in the 30s and 40s and then for tomorrow, that system moves out. so with that partly sunny skies. there is another very weak system on monday; that could generate a few pop-up showerses. it's only a chance now, but nothing like what we experienced today, that main energy moving outside of the bay area. that will be in the monday forecast. so here we go, we'll take a look at our five-day forecast cast model. into sunday we'll have basically partly cloudy skies, and then for the rest of the day, we're tracking some showers to the south and to the east. and then monday morning, there we go with more clouds the forecast model not too aggressive and temperatures will be in the 70s for afternoon highs for tomorrow. so san josi 63 degrees and morgan hill, 64 and look ahead, your five-day forecast, there is that slight chance of
