r the gunman in the deadly shooting. it happened after 7:00 a.m. this morning on the east side of the city. ktvu's paul chambers is live now at headquarters. what can you tell us you learned about this case? >> reporter: we asked police several times to comment on this case, they are being very light lipped about it. not giving information about a suspect. but the grandma of the man killed today feels sorry for the people who are responsible. >> i saw his body. i covered him up with a blanket and put a towel over his head. >> reporter: she is talking about her grandson who was shot and killed after 7:00 a.m. this morning. >> i heard shots. and then i came down and the young man was shot in front of his car. >> i think that he was in peace when he died. because after we prayed he took his last breath and that is

helpful to me. >> reporter: she says they would talk almost every morning before he went to work but not today and she is not sure why someone would hurt her grandson. >> i don't know what he was doing outside of the home. i can't say. i don't know anyone who would hate him enough to kill him. >> he was a happy young man who just became a father but now she the 18th person to be shot and killed in oakland this year. >> this was just as devastating as the other 17. it is another african american male who lost their life to the violence. >> reporter: for now police have not released information about potential suspects. but she has sympathy for the person who ended her grandson's life. >> i feel sorry for the kids. if they get caught this is a

thrown away life. >> reporter: he leaves behind a two-month-old son. police have not released information about a suspect or car description. if you know anything call police. >> all right. a sad situation. thank you very much. new developments in the killing of a 84-year-old woman in her home. one of the suspects in the case wept before -- went before a judge. the suspect was charged with being an accessory to murder. ktvu's noelle walker reports authorities say the victim was killed with a single gun shot. >> reporter: cameras were not allowed inside the courthouse as the 28-year-old john bruno martinez was charged with accessory to murder, robbery, burglary and false imprisonment, the charges stem from the murder of olga mary

dinelli thursday inside her farm house she shared with her brother. dead from a single gun shot wound. >> no reason to kill somebody. i mean, couldn't -- [ crying ] >> reporter: he sat down with ktvu fox 2 news sunday explaining their home had been ransacked. his sister tied to a chair. the sheriff's department says some valuables stolen from the home has been covered. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: on saturday the search for suspects went from the bay area southern california -- bay area to southern california where they led law enforcement on a chase from riverside county to the arizona desert. it ended in a shoot out with police that left stephanie hill dead and victor silva under arrest. the suspect who appeared in court today was arrested in

richmond. the district attorney now says his involvement in the crime was after the fact. a friend who came to see him in court told ktvu fox 2 news i am 100% sure he had nothing to do with it. knowing him and his character, that is not him. in my heart i know he is not guilty. martinez is expected back in court next week. victor silva is not likely to be in a courtroom soon. that is because he is held in arizona on felony murder charnels. noelle walker -- charges. nowell w -- noelle walker, ktvu fox 2 news. three not guilty pleas in sonoma today. the crimes occurred at a home near santa rosa. the homeowner faces several counts of sexual assault. he is also accused of inflicting torture. the other men are accused of

guarding the victim. she escaped last month. the parents of three bay area victim whose were killed in the deadly rampage near university of california, santa barbara filed a wrongful death lawsuit today. that accuses the sheriff's department and the apartment managers of being negligence and ignoring warning signs about elliot rodger's behavior. elliot rodger killed six university of california, santa barbara students and injured 14 others before killing himself. his first three victims from the bay area. his roommates and one of their friends. the family of jahi mcmath, a teen left brain dead, filed a lawsuit today. the lawsuit asked for damages from children's hospital oakland. the family claims the girl bled for hours after surgery and that nurses ignored the call for a doctor. jahi mcmath was declared brain

dead but the family never accepted that and moved her to a facility in new jersey where she is receiving care. new documents in a sex scandal with cal fire. assistant chief used his state issued phone to

year if they get the money. plan to redesign polk street. it is supposed to make the streets safer but not everyone agrees it will. ktvu's rob roth is live at san francisco city hall with what is happening. rob? >> reporter: the meeting is still going strong here at city hall. at issue is the safety plan for polk street. >> the meeting was packed with residents, business owners and bicyclists. >> i would like to be stopped having to be hit by cars. >> reporter: the plan before the board of directors. it would eliminate 140 parking places. in one stretch parking will be eliminated during the morning commute hours. many businesses are against the plan. >> it will be less people to come and buy in the stores. >> reporter: the city concern said about safety. 122 people have been injured

over the past 5 years. >> three weeks ago i have a bicycle accident. bad. they need to -- i don't know, do something. >> reporter: after two years of planning the mta came up with a plan that includes building a raised bike lane on one side of the street. >> our priority is reducing fatalities and reducing traffic injuries. anything we can do is what we concluded. >> reporter: they oppose the plan, it wants protected bike lanes in both directions. >> the bike lane chokes too much of polk street. >> it would make the street safer. >> the project's cost, $8.2 million. the vote is expected sometime tonight. ken? >> we will have the latest when it happens. thank you. busy highway for commuters

took 5 hours but a protest that blocked highway 17 has been cleared. a group of santa cruz students set up blockades and chained themselves together at 9:00 a.m. this morning protesting tuition hikes and police brutality. during the blockade traffic was rerouted and there were delays. former homeland security secretary janet napolitano

announced limits for out of state students. the number of non-resident students accepted will be capped. there were concerns california students were being displaced. they will still not add more spots for residents. they pay $23,000 a year more than california students. bill in sacramento would grant a tax break to medical marijuana users who are a terminal illness. the bill would do away with state taxes on pop if a doctor confirmed the patient was terminal. it bill could be heard march 29. marijuana may be the only prescription medicine subject to a state tax. a special celebration in san francisco tonight to mark a turning point. 1915, 20 million people came to the panama pacific international exposition, now 100 years later the city is

celebrating that moment by giving the ferry building a new look. ktvu's allie rasmus is live where the celebration is underway. >> reporter: that celebration is supposed to culminate at 6:15 p.m. any minute now. what happens then is the mayor, the former mayor, and dignitaries are speaking right now but they will flip a switch and with that flip of the switch the clock hour whichs are -- tower which has been decorated will be lit up to chemerate the 100 anniversary of -- chem rate the 100 anniversary of the panama pacific international exposition. this afternoon we got a look inside and talked to two of the people who made this project happen. 7 stories above the ground is the clock face and jim -- you know what? i am going to take you out here live. sounds like they are getting

ready to flip the switch. no. false alarm. mayor ed lee is speaking. let's go back to the voidio and give you the -- video and give you the story. a steeplejack climbs hard to access places and he installed the numbers 1915 on the clock tower a couple weeks ago and decorated the building with a thousand lights. to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the panama pacific international exposition and recreate the way it looks for the 1915 world's fair. she studied the history of the panama pacific international exposition. she has a personal connection to it. her grandparents got engaged that fair and she came up with the $88,000 needed to light up the ferry building. we asked what they hope people will appreciate once they see the new lights. >> i hope they think about how far we come and take the time
