7:04 am
building was set to be demolished next month. now, as you can see, even more reason to tear it down. it was simply gutted by this fire late last night. there has been a fire crew out here throughout the night to keep an eye on any flareups. this fire caught fire at 10:00 last night and there were a number of people inside at the time. in fact, when vallejo firefighters first got out here, they got reports from a number of witnesses about a man and his dog still trapped inside that burning building. crews, though, could not go inside right away. it took about an hour to knock down the fire. that's when firefighters went to do a room-by-room search. they didn't find any victims inside. firefighters say this search of the building was made quite challenging by the fact that this building has been very well lived in. there's trash and human waste everywhere from all of the people living here. >> the building is a vacant school building with known transients in it.
7:05 am
we got multiple calls of the fire and reports of people still inside while the fire was actively burning. >> reporter: and over the past few years, vallejo police have been to this building a number of times to remove homeless people from the place. but, again, according to one report, squatters continue to break back into this building and continue to live here. there were two minor injuries related to last night's fire. one of them a firefighter who suffered a puncture wound, i'm told. the other was a person who got out of this building who suffered minor smoke inhalation but refused to be treated here at the scene. again, this building that once belonged to the vallejo school district and housed its main offices now owned by a private company. it was set to be demolished next month and that may still well be the case after this fire last night. by the way, we do expect a fire investigator to come out here at some point this morning to gather evidence and try to figure out exactly what started the fire. >> alex savidge live in
