davon ellis' father said the news gave him hope the killer will be found. the boston marathon bombings trial. attorneys for the accused dzhokhar tsarnaev tried to limit the testimony about the gruesome scenes but the judge refused. he said he saw his son's leg with a deep crater. the boy said it really hurts, daddy, it really hurts. the defense acknowledged dzhokhar tsarnaev is guilty, they are hoping to spare him from the death penalty. >> there is no chance your client is going to walk but there is a chance your client could stay alive. it is not a happy life but it is a life. >> jurors also watched a surveillance video showing the glass breaking and victims rushing in. they pulled lights from the shovels to help those who were injured. the trial will last 3 to 4

months. a protest against tuition hikes led to the shut down of the santa cruz campus and that wasn't the only action by students. ktvu's ann rubin tonight with the message and the impact of their demonstration. >> reporter: don't come to campus. that was the message santa cruz put out after protesters blocked the? trances. >> education -- the entrances. >> education should be free. >> i wouldn't be out here if i didn't think there was merit. >> police put up blockades, shutting down streets around campus too. protesters say diverting traffic wasn't their intent. >> we want to cause a public description. >> this is ridiculous. giving us a bad name. >> reporter: on other campuses students rallied too. at university of california at berkeley they gathered and

marched. it was 96 hours of action, some of which took place away from the schools. on tuesday six students were arrested after blocking highway one and tying up traffic for hours. those students appeared in court today on misdemeanors and according to protesters are facing two week suspensions from school. >> they are unconstitutional. outrageous. >> reporter: officials won't comment on the students' fate. but say they are glad today's protest was peaceful. they said discussions are far from over. >> people are waiting to see what the results of the talks are. >> protesters did let some people through the blockades like healthcare workers and those with kids in day care. it is back to business on campus tomorrow. in santa cruz, ann rubin, ktvu fox 2 news. we are here in unity. students, staff and faculty. >> the idea of higher tuition

weapons possessions, robberies, street robberies. anything they can do to further the existence of their gangs. >> reporter: they said through the arrests they solved two cold case homicides. one from 2008, one from 2012. officers confiscated six guns. bringing the total number to 36. >> the real key is to make sure that crime reduction is sustained. that when, you know, when we come in and make arrests in the community, we are there, we continue to pay attention to it so that others don't move in. the two gangs started as one 40 years ago before they splintered. >> this began with a heroin operation in the area. >> several of the young men from the gangs that lost their lives during this feud had

the legal fight over same- sex marriage is set to go before the u.s. supreme court next month. today they set a april 28 date to hear arguments. at issue whether there is a constitutional right tasame-sex marriage and with -- to same- sex marriage. the city attorney filed a friend of the court brief in the case. >> we are gathered here. >> if the court were to say there is no federal right for same-sex couples to marry this
