police officers on edge this morning after receiving threats from gang members. some officers, even followed to their homes. we'll tell you how this is all related to a deadly police shooting two months ago shots fired at a highway patrol officer late last night in san jose. what he was doing right before the shooting. ahead on mornings on 2. good morning, we're live in san francisco this morning, getting a sneak peek at some of the floats that will be featured in this weekend's chinese new year parade. always a fun sight. coming up in minutes, she'll tell us what we can expect to see as this year's celebration, it's the year of the ram, the

highs will be in the 70s. in fact, looks like they'll stay there today and also tomorrow. there could be some mid-70s here so enjoy the warm weather. here's brian updating your friday traffic. good morning, everybody. happy friday. let's get your day started and out the door if you're headed out the door on your commute today. northbound 880 north of davis street offramp. the left lane is blocked. there's an accident with injuries. northbound 770 north of the davis street offramp. we're hearing reports of a small brush fire northbound 13 south of lincoln avenue in oakland. the right shoulder is affected there. traffic moving nicely 580 through the livermore area. this is near mckey, traffic has been backed up because of a couple of sent. they're still working the scene of the accident there. finally, highway 4 through the pittsburg bay point area,

traffic moving nicely on to 24 2. an oakland street gang may be targeted members of the san leandro police department. some officers think they may have already been stalked and followed home. alex savidge joins us. >> reporter: good morning to you. this department certainly on edge. gang members have apparently been stalking and threatening a number of san leandro officers, who of them have even been followed to their homes. according to a report from the contra costa times, these threats began in december of last year immediately after this deadly shooting by san leandro police. officers killed 27 guadalupe after she led them on a chase and rammed a police car. since that time, a number of officers have had suspicious

run-ins with people thought to be members of an east oakland street gang. in one case, a san leandro officer said a car with four men inside tailed to him to his home in livermore. when the officer confronted those men, they drove off. in another instance, an officer reported being followed to his home in san ramone. an investigation into all of these cases found the threat to be quite credible. and because the names of the particular officers involved in that deadly police shooting have not been made public, this is considered to be sort of a blanket threat against all members of the department and tori, as you can imagine all police officers are asked to be on alert and remain cautious whether they're in uniform on duty or offduty. >> alex savidge live for us in san leandro this morning. new this morning, officers are searching for whoever fired shots at a chp patrol car during a traffic stop in san jose overnight. the highway patrol says it

happened just after 11:30 p.m. officers had stopped the car on northbound highway 101 near actually road when the shots were fired. one of the rounds struck the chp car, but the officer was not injured. investigators say the suspects got away. the highway was briefly shut down during the investigation. our time is now 7:05. vallejo firefighters, they're busy investigating a second fire at that abandoned school district building. the latest one started last night about 7:45. this time, two rooms went up in flames. this abandoned building first caught fire tuesday night. it used to house administrative offices with the vallejo school district but squatters have any over to the building. oakland police have someone in custody they're calling a person of interest in the shooting death of 14-year-old davon ellis. family members say davon was walking to the store with his friends saturday night when

someone got out of a car and shot him. his family said davon was a good student, he played football, was never in trouble. we talked to davon's father and told us this week, as you can imagine, has been really tough. >> they knew how much he meant to us. all we wanted was one boy, just one boy i needed to make my life right, the killer almost took two lives today, mine and my son's. >> oakland police are releasing very little information about the person of interest in custody. they'll only say he's in custody for an unrelated crime that occurred outside of oakland. another milestone for silicon valley giant apple, it will replace at&t as one of the companies in the dow jones industrial average. apple is currently the most valuable american company worth

approximately $700 billion. the dow jones industrial average is a weighted index of 30 large publicly owned companies in the u.s.. the apple switch was prompted bay four for one stock split by dow member visa. single shares of visa will drop accordingly. adding apple to the dow helps balance it out. time is 7:07. san francisco is gearing up for a bay area tradition tomorrow, it's the annual chinese knew new year parade. good morning, katy. >> reporter: good morning dave. the float make irs have been building around the clock and it was so early when we got here, they weren't back up and at it again, so no joke, they left us a key and a trail of glitter so we could find the lights in this warehouse. they were working on this

beautiful looks like ocean waves late in the night last night. they even redid it and the floats, there are so many of them. they're parked in here really tight that. one looks like ithas some hologram lights on it. i imagine those will sparkle. combine that with 600 pounds of glitter. that's how much glitter they've used so far in building the floats. dave thomas is the master float builder and he's going to tell us about the floats. what are you most excited about? >> i'm excited to see the floats are done. this is a squeaker here. this black wall you see behind us will be $100,000 worth of l.e.d.s that will installed. we have projectors built inside. we can't wait to see how it is. as you can see, we've been glittering more sheep than you can shake a stick at.

>> reporter: you told me even up until last night urn having your float builders redo things. talk about the quality you put into this project. >> bottom line, we are float builders, it's about nut, bolts and screw, with you we are artists. we walk through it and if those magnificent workers won't sign their name to it, i won't sign my name to it. and sometimes we look at it, we made a boo boo there, take it all down. >> reporter: are you going to be ready in time or are you going to put the last touches on as they roll out of here? >> this is the part we like best. we have 95% of it done, it's that extra little 5% that can make they pop across the street. today is a rollout today. we have to move all these massive floats by hand, line them up for the parade marshals which we come in.

sometimes there's surprises, we find a worker under the float that never went home. >> reporter: just sleeping i hope. >> of course. we have really come through at the final end here. >> reporter: dave, i appreciate you getting up early with us and you have a little bit of glitter around your eyes and i think that's part of the territory. >> the last 30 years i walk around with sparkles. i go to the gym, they say you have glitter there. is there a problem here? >> reporter: not a bad way to work. glitter on the face and 600 pounds of glitter involved in this year's parade. we'll be back at 8:00. dave will give us more insight into these beautiful floats. >> katie, great job and dave looks good with the glitter. don't forget, you can watch the chinese new year parade here live on ktvu.

we will re-air the parade for for you at 9 p.m. the delta jet line they're skidded off the runaway at new york's laguardia airport has been hauled off but the runway is still open. crews worked overnight using cranes to remove the plane from the run way. the since kent o-dent happened yesterday just minutes after the runway was plowed. passengers say it came down hard and then took a sharp turn. the plane was heading from atlanta to new york. it crashed through a chain link fence, it came to rest just feet from an icy bay. some passengers said they thought the plane had hit the water. >> it was nerve-wracking. the plane came down and slid and then it took a spin to the left and we looked out the window and we could see the wing was hit hitting a fence.

>> the incident is raising questions about when airports should close run ways due to snow or ice. currently there, is no rule in place about how much snow and ice can accumulate on the runway before it is taken out of operation. if you stay on the shot, it actually rested on the berm which was just recently put in place. and i heard aviation experts say that berm kept the plane out of the water. >> with that wing breaking off, incredible. very lucky. >> yeah. we're still talking about harr i son ford. he was badly hurt when his plane crash landed in california. coming up in 20 minutes, we'll get an update from his son. up next, the latest on the injuries suffered by giants fan favorite hunterer pence and how it's going to ruin an impressive record set by the outfielder. good morning. happy friday to you.

the minor league pitcher who hit and broke the arm of giants outfielder hunter pence says he feels terrible about what happened. 23-year-old cubs minor leaguer cory black hit pence yesterday in the left forearm. x-rays revealed a fracture. doctors estimate pence be out for six to eight weeks, meaning he will miss the start of the regular season. >> always upbeat, optimistic and

try to move out of the way and he just kind of ran and then got him there. >> pence is one of the giants' inspirational leaders. he was just amazing duringel the world series last year. he played 383 consecutive season games, that's the current consecutive longest iron man streak but it will come to an end opening day. pence twitted to his fans, all the love and support is making me feel better already. thank you. and pitcher cory black who hit pence grew up in san diego, he responded with this tweet, lost for words. hope you heal fast. hitting someone is never a good feeling, hurting someone is even worse. aldon smith of the 49ers he wants to prove his problems off the field are behind me. he's agreed to restructure the last year of his contract where he was due to earn $9.75 million this coming season.

residual traffic remain on northbound 101. 880, the nimitz freeway, new accident at northbound 880. this was off davis street near san leandro, it's an injury accident but as you can see, affecting traffic from 238 this morning and that's going to make a mess along the nimitz freeway. san mateo bridge south of that, also very busy. traffic coming in from 238, about 30 minutes to get you from heyward into san mateo this morning. at 7:18, here's steve. we have clear skies. it's clear as i've seen it. there's not even any hint of fog off the coast as well. it's good to go, top to bottom, west to east and temperatures warming up. santa rosa at 70 degrees yesterday, 75 today. palo alto, 72. livermore almost made it yesterday, they will today, 73. morgan hill from 74 to 76 degrees.

couple of reports up in low 30s in lake county. i know doug just checked in, 33 on marsh creek road and i know napa airport made it to 33 but everything points toward sunshine and warmer temps here on this friday. san francisco checking in at 71, well above average there. 30s for livermore, a lot of 40s here to 50s but mainly 40s. temperatures, though, by the coast, still struggling to really cool off that much. water temps are 57, 58 degrees. monterey, was 58, now 57. should be closer to 51, 52. 18 up in tahoe. 40s until you hit southern california. palm springs already out of the gate fast at 68 degrees. there's your jet stream, how everything has been stuck. carves itself out, series of systems reloads and a ridge over the west coast continues to fire up and send everything to the north. usually this kind of a pattern, we're running out of time but usually you can get a lot of

he spotted the car as he was heading to work. the three men in custody, they're suspects in an antioch burglary earlier that morning. last night, the chief met the public for a regularly scheduled pizza night. he said his department is trying out new tactics to fight crime. he said overall, violent crime is down almost 10% compared to 2013. and he gives the credit to his officers and to the community, which includes 70 volunteers who volunteer more than 10,000 hours. >> vacation house checks, issuing handicapped parking citations, they work inside the department internally in records and assist in that as well. >> the chief says right now they do want more officers on the force. antioch has 88 police officers on duty. but there are 102 authorized positions. time is 7:21. a rash of thefts leaving car

illery. time to change a liquor law some say is out of date. 7:24. five monkeys in louisiana have been infected with a bio terror bacteria and more are being tested. that's according to a new report by usa today. the trouble started when almost 200 monkeys were moved prosecute a high security lap before scientists figured out they may have been exposed to the bacteria. the monkeys were placed in outside cages in a primate center. amongies that are exposed can

take several days to years before they show signs of the disease. state and federal investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how the monkeys may have come in contact with the bacteria check this out, some cornell researchers have figured out how fast a zombie outbreak would spread in the u.s. this is kind of a tongue in cheek investigation. it is based on census data and computer model showing the spread of infectious diseases. it shows zombies taking over san francisco, by area in less than 48 hours. and the safest places for a zombie apocalypse are montana and idaho. lawmakers trying to level the plague field between wineries and distilleries by letting distilleries sell directly to the public. they provide tasteings for

tourists but they can't sell it directly to them because there's a law dating back to pro bigs that says -- pro prohibition that says it has to go through a middle man. a truck has to come to the distillery, drive it to a warehouse and drive it back. >> the fact it has to go to the distributor and come back is both environmental ridiculous and makes no sense at all. >> north bay say obama bly man mark levine is trying to push this legislation f it passes, it would allow distilleries to sell only three bottles to a single visitor but that could be a tough fight from distributors who may want to keep things the way they are now. later today, a popular wine- tasting event will kick off in sew gnoma county and -- sonoma county and extra officers will be on hand.

the 37th annual wine road barrel tasting event starts today. it will continue over the next two weekends. more than 100 wineries are taking part and organizers expect more than 20,000 people to attend. for the event, wineries are offering people a chance to sample wines straight out of the barrel. if you want to take some of the wine home, you have to wait, though, since most of the wines won't be bottled for at least another year. 7:27. hate to say good-bye, the early morning fair well party that just wrapped up as people say bye bye to the bay lights. the reason fans of the lights are taking heart. students are just starting to arrive for a sick-out at their elementary. we'll tell you why they're cutting class detained their parents -- and their parents approve. it's going to be warm this weekend.

students are actually being encouraged to cut class today. ktvu's tara moriarty is there and explains why the school's budget problems have inspired this unusual move that you don't see happening very often and we tell what you parents hope their students' absence accomplishes. it's friday, march 6th. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about your weather on a friday morning. steve, how does it look this morning? >> it looks beautiful. can't find a cloud anywhere. it will be sunny and warm today, temperatures above average today and tomorrow. not out of the realm of the possibility to get an upper 70 to maybe near 80 on saturday. that would be probably south of us, but anywhere we go today and tomorrow it's going to be warm. downtown oakland above average, 73 degrees. san jose has a chance to set a record high, 76 is the forecast.

the record, though, is only 78 set way back in 19 # 0, so i mean -- 1980, so it will be close. 30s for some. so it's cold, 40s. others, 50s and there's an easterly breeze which means the coast will warm up. this system is trying but i don't think anything is going to happen until the middle or end of next week and that's not promising. lots of 70s. i just posted on facebook in about five days, chicago will hit the 50s and they're doing cartwheels. temperatures have been so cold for them but we'll be very warm today. brian, here it is on a friday, light traffic? >> yes, sir. overall, not to bad. first, let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, where this is looking pretty good. getting better. still about 20 minutes to get you across the span this morning. as you get along the span, average speed, 10 miles per hour. the commute along the east

shore freeway not too bad, 25 minutes from the car keen as bridge. traffic moving nicely through here, southbound 680 as you approach the fremont area into san jose, no major problems from concord into fremont. that's looking good. finally, taking a look at the nimitz freeway, there was an earlier accident northbound 880 on the davis street onramp. that has since been cleared, all lanes are open but you see the residual traffic. 7:33. let's go back to the desk. some parents and students on the peninsula, they want to send a strong message this morning they support teachers at their local schools. ktvufox 2's tara moriarty is live. >> reporter: i never about this happening ever before asick-out among the students. this was organized by parents. you can see there is a student with his mom and they are standing in the street.

they've blocked it off and basically turning around cars. everybody that comes to school today is being told to either participate in the protest or stay home. now, as we walk over here, you can see they've got some signs and they're getting ready to stage a rally here at 8:00 this morning. with the $2 million deficit looming, the san druno parks school board -- bruno parks school board voted to cut positions and teacher's salaries. kids say it's not okay because their teachers have not had a raise in nearly a decade. what are you guys protesting before? >> giving the teachers a raise. >> reporter: how do you feel about that? >> feel like they should give the teachers a raise because they haven't had one for ten years. >> reporter: how do you feel about your teachers? >> my teachers, i'm so happy with them and they taught mae lot. >> reporter: how important do you think this is? >> the most important thing i

ever faced. >> reporter: in mid-february, parents and teachers rallied outside a school board meeting saying school district officials had mismanaged funds. officials say the district has been dipping into the proceeds from the $30 million sale of carl sandberg elementary in 2005 but that pot is about empty from lower enrollments and higher than anticipated costs. all of this happening while teachers in brisbane and burlingame are getting post- recession raises. a class is going to be starting at 8:15. that's about a half an hour. the teachers are still coming to work today. it's the parents that are coming here and protesting with their children or opting to stay home. we'll be sure to keep you updated through the morning. >> very interesting. thank you, tara. sometime is 7256789. people gathered in sfrablg to day sai good-bye -- gathered in

san francisco to say good-bye to the lights on the bay bridge. the lights are being removed for 11 months so the crews can do maintenance work. janine de la vega joins us live from san francisco. >> reporter: good morning tori. everybody has left now and gone to work, but for a period of about an hour, it was just classic san francisco. there was a huge crowd of people and we watched as they hugged. there was a string quartet playing and they were all watching as the lights here faded out while the sun came up. now, here is a cool time lapse. we put together for you showing the dancing light display on the western span of the bridge. it shows how the light and view transformed during the early morning hours until sunrise of the lights are being removed for the next 11 months because the cables on the bridge need maintenance. lights turned off around 6:40 a.m. and people clapped as it happened.

a lot of locals came to the epic roast house where there was a farewell celebration. tourists showed up taking pictures of the bridge. >> it's magical. it's one thing san francisco does so well, events like there. we have for the 100th anniversary of the earthquake, it was 5 in the morning, this is one ftd things we'll always remember. >> reporter: the cascade of lights will be reinstalled and newspaper time for super bowl 50 in february. $4 million was raised and the nonprofit organization called illuminate the arts say the new lights will be stronger so they can handle the harsh conditions of the san francisco bay. it definitely looks different out here. the lights display has been up for the past two years, so people have really gotten used to seeing them and now they won't be able to for nearly a year. tori. >> that's kind of sad to see

them go but glad that they're coming back. your time 7:37. gas prices will stay low over the next two years. those are the words of the ceo of exxon mobil. in praentation to investors -- presentation to investors, he said he expects crude oil prices to average $55 a barrel through 2015. that's about half the price in recent years. tillisays it's because of two factors, a rise in production and a drop of demand because of weakening economic conditions in china, japan and europe. back here at home, youth baseball players in contra costa county are getting their playing fields back today. the baseball fields are on the property of the tesoro refinery. they've been locked up because of a labor dispute. officials say they didn't want kids to have to go across picket line but the refinery increased the security and

they've agreed with the union not to picket. those gates will be unlocked and the young baseball players will be welcomed back sometime today. a rash of thefts in sonoma county is leaving car owners with an expensive repair bill. sheriff's deputies say more than 30 cat lytic converters have been stolen from cars in four nights. it costs $3400 to replace the device. the thieves are after the precious metals in the converter. >> they will cut it from any section. it's quick and easy. they have a metal saw and probably in less than 30 seconds, they're gone. >> the sheriff's department is urging drivers to use their garages to store their cars if they can. they're also looking for surveillance video and watching scrap yards in hopes of catching up with thieves. google is offering a new service that says it will help

you find the best deal on car insurance. google unveiled the new service yesterday that will allow you to compare quotes from as many as 14 different car insurance companies. google gets a cut of the sales. with one analyst said google may offer it's own car insurance and google is already developing a self-driving car that it hopes to release in the next five years. time now, 7:40. 17 members of two rival oakland gains are in jail after coordinated raids aimed at reducing gin violence. it was a result of a gong operation targeting the 56th and 59th street gangs, all part of oakland's "cease fire" program. investigators say through these arrests, they've now solved two cold case homicides, one from 2008, the other from 2012. >> the real key is make sure that crime reduction is sustained in that when, you know, when we come in and make some arrests in a community

that, we are there, we continue to pay attention to it, so that others don't move in. >> now, the effort to serve all the warrants and make all the arrests took more than 300 officers from the federal, state and local levels and they are still out there searching for at least ten more gang members. the chp has apparently told one of its officers based in dublin they intend to fire him because of the scandal that involved officers sharing nude photos from the cell phones of women who had been pulled over. the "san francisco chronicle" reports the officer, the chp intends to fire is one of the officers who received the stolen photos. now, we previously reported that officer shaun harrington took the pictures from two female suspects and then texted them to fellow officers. harrington resigned last year. meanwhile, the chp says a plain clothes officer did not violate department policy when he pointed his gun at anti- police demonstrators last december in oakland.

that investigation concluded, the officer saved the life of his partner and other people in the area. that officer and his partner were dressed in plain clothes to blend in with the crowd but demonstrators became suspicious they were police. the officer said he drew his weapon when his partner was wrestling with one of the protesters and other demonstrators started to swarm them. >> 7:42. we're now hearing the radio transmission from harrison ford just before he crash landed his plane on a golf course in southern california. >> 53718, engine failure. immediate return. >> clear to land. >> ford's vintage plane lost engine power about 20 minutes after taking off yesterday afternoon from the santa monica airport. the world war ii era plane clipped a tree and went down on a venice golf course. several golfers saw it all.

trans plants last night. three more are going through surgery this morning. one of the largest kidney chains ever performed. six kidneys and involved 12 parents. it's called a donation chain. it's often necessary because the person in need of an organ has a family member willing to donate but is not a match. in this case, six people will be getting kidneys. the donors are family members who were not a matched to their loved one but they were to others and one donor who stepped up, allowed the connections to be made and put the chain in motion. >> it's kind of overwhelming, yeah, because i thought i was just going to help this one person who i don't know, but the fact that so many people can have life extension, that's pretty big. >> i've been doing this for over 20 years and this kind of thing is very gratifying. we get to know our patients on the waiting list many times and we get to know how rough it is

some trouble spots this morning. . this is southbound 880 past oracle arena and the coliseum. it's a non-injury accident north of 98th. the reason i bring this up, a lot of people may be heading out of town for the weekend and heading toward the airport. 98 obviously one of the exits into oakland airport. be aware of that this morning. that is affecting traffic past the coliseum. northbound looking okay, slow and go past the coliseum. moving on to highway 4, the pittsburg bay point area, slow and go through there. all told, this commute has been looking pretty good this morning. also, not too bad on 680 from concord into walnut creek. south bay commute is horrendous. new accident off hilliard. another one there and that's affecting traffic from that point. doesn't get better until you reach 237 this morning. speaking of numbers, it is 7:49. here's steve. brian, thank you.

speaking of numbers, they'll be in the 70s today. not yet but 30s, 40s and 50s on the lows. it was cold for some. we had low 30s from lake county, a couple of readings at 33 degrees on marsh creek road and up to the napa airport but it looks like we're going to warm up. it's clear, sunny and it will be warmer for everybody. there's a little east-northeast breeze. nothing is heading our way yet. napa forecast, it's kind of splitting the difference, 36. 74 for a high. shouldn't take too long. all these temperatures will be above average today but still plenty of 30s to go around. fairfield in there, santa rosa, napa, walnut creek, half moon bay is already 52. the coast will be nice, getting the offshore breeze. 18 in truckee, 68 in palm springs, recovering very fast. clear skies for us.

dzhokhar tsarnaev is on trial for the bombings. the ongoing national debate over police use of force has inspired a new documentary film and part of it will be shot in california. a north carolina film maker plans to travel across the country exploring tensions between communities of color and police. he's including a visit to los angeles for the documentary called "don't shoot." he said he plans to speak with police officers as well as the community. time is 7:57. kind of a scary story this morning. police in san leandro on high alert because of threats from an east oakland gang. after the break, what triggered those threats and how gang members are reportedly stalking police officers. we're live in a san francisco pier where the final touches are being put on floats for this year's chinese new year parade. i'll have an inside peek of the floats and a unique story of how sneaking on to the parade

according to a report, the threats first began in december of last year. immediately following this deadly shooting by san leandro police. officers killed 27-year-old guadalupe ochoa after investigators say she led police on a chase and rammed a patrol car. that shooting happened in the city of oakland. since that time, a number of officers have had suspicious run-ins with people thought to be members of an east oakland street gang n one case asan leandro officer said a car with four men inside tailed him to his home in livermore. when the officer confronted those men, they drove off. in another instance, an officer reported being followed to his home in san ramone. there was an internal investigation here at the department that found these threats to be quite credible, and because the names of the particular officers who were involved in that police shooting have not been made public, this is essentially being considered sort of a blanket threat against anyone who works here at the

department and so for that reason, tori, you can imagine all police officers are remaining cautious. they are remaining on alert whether they are in uniform, in a patrol car or whether they're off duty. >> certainly a frightening time for them. it is 8:04. officers are searching for whoever fired shots at a chp patrol car overnight during a traffic stop? san jose. the chp said it happened just after 11:30 p.m. officers had stopped the car on northbound highway 101 near tule tuly road. the officer was not injured. the highway was briefly shut down during the investigation. our time is 8:05. oakland police have a person of interest in custody for the shooting death of 14-year-old davon ellis. the family members and friends held a vigil last night. they say davon was walking to the store with his friends on

brookedale avenue on saturday when someone got out of a car and shot him. the family said davon was a good student, played football and in never trouble. davon's father told us this week has been especially rough. >> they knew how much he meant to us, all we wanted was one boy, he was my one boy i needed to make my world right. the killer, he almost took two lives that day, mine and my son's. >> right now, oakland police aren't saying much about that person of interest. they'll only say he is in custody for an unrelated crime that occurred outside of oakland. it's 8:05. vallejo firefighters are investigating a second fire at an abandoned school district building this week. the latest fire started about 7:45 last night. two rooms went up in flames. the boarded-up building first caught fire tuesday night. more recently it's been taken

over by squatters. now that the two sides in the port labor dispute have reached a tentative deal the back-up of cargo at the port of oakland is clearing up. longshoremen have been working nilgts and weekends to unload -- nights and weekends to unload the containers. dock workers and shipping companies reached a tentative deal two weeks ago, and this morning, port of oakland officials announced that the log jam of cargo should be cleared within two months. the massive cranes synonymous with the port are loading and unloading up to 30 containers an hour. >> wow. time is 8:06. we're looking forward to this, chinese new year parade tomorrow. the final preparations under way for that big event in san francisco. and ktvu fox's 2 katy you'dis is at a special place this morning. this is the warehouse where

they're doing the final touches on elaborate floats. >> reporter: you should be jealous. this is a great assignment. i'm surrounded by glitter and fun. we tell you how the float builders left a glitter trail to turn on the lights and i whether i talked to dave thomas, the master builder, he was mad because he said that was $5 worth of glitter. he's so far used 600 pounds of glitter and they're back at it again today. around 7:15, the rest of the float makers they arrived for work this morning. let me show you some of the l.e.d. technology being used this year. this lighted tree is one of the examples. dave thomas talked to us about making sure the parade stays modern with l.e.d. lights and other modern technology.

>> it's kind of where hong kong and singapore have gone, but they made the stuff here. here we have to pay about three times for the thing. it takes thousands of l.e.d.s to light up the tree. to be honest, we had to bring in experts. there is no way we could have personally filgd it out ourselves -- figured it out ourselves. >> reporter: there are some 23 floats this year, that's up from 20 last year. the parade continues to grow in size and splendor, especially since the days when thomas would sneak on to the parade with his kung fu gig and mask in order to disguise the fact that he wasn't a -- >> we ended up staying in the parade and they gave me one float, then three floats and five floats and next thing you know, i was building all the floats. >> reporter: there you have it

from a kid sneaking on to the chinese new year parade to master flowed builder, which he's been doing for 30 years now, so it takes a lot of heart, a lot of blood, sweat and tears to pull it off and the float workers, they've been working for hours on end. they're installing l.e.d. screens. other people are making -- someone just made a pin wheel here and there's work on front of me on the ground that they did last night. that wasn't to dave's standards so he had them start from scratch and reglitter this this. dave, tori, there's so much going into the parade and we'll follow them through the morning and throughout the day. right now, it looks like these floats are going to roll out of here on time but i'm told they are always putting on last- minute touches, even as they're rolling down the road. >> oh, my goodness, throwing glitter at it. >> it looks so good, thank you

the minor league pitcher who threw the pitch that broke hunter pence's arm says he feels terrible about it. the 23-year-old cubs minor leaguer's named cory black, he threw that pitch and hit his left forearm. ouch. he's hurting. x-rays revealed a fracture. doctors estimate hunter pence will be out six to eight weeks, which means he's going to miss the beginning of the regular season next month. >> always upbeat, optimistic and but try to, you know, move out of the way, you know, just kind of ran and then got him there. >> hunter pence is one of the big cheerleaders on the giants. he's played 383 straight regular season games. it is the longest active streak of its kind in major league baseball, but it's going to end

port authorities spokesman said the second run way reopened about 10:30 this morning eastern time. airport's other one way was reopened three hours after the incident yesterday. crews worked overnight using the big cranes there to remove the plane from the run way. this all happened yesterday just minutes after the runway had been plowed. passengers say the plane came down hard, then took a sharp turn. that lean was heading from atlanta to new york. it had 127 passengers on board and five crew members. it crashed right through a chain link fence and then stopped just a couple of feet from an icy bay. some of the passengers said they thought the plane hit the water. >> it was nerve-wracking. the plane came down and slid and then it took a spin to the left and we looked out the window, and we could see the wing was hitting a fence. >> that's pretty scary that. incident is raising questions

of a terrifying experience for family visiting a safari park in south africa. this video was taken last year. they were recording their adventure when a curious female lion comes by and opens the passenger door with her mouth. as you can imagine, the family screamed in terror. they were able to quickly reshut the door and lock it. this video is similar to an incident last month when a texas man was videotaping buffalos running down the park 24 in yosemite. there were no injuries in either incident. five monkeys in louisiana have been infected with a bio terror bacteria and more are being tested. the trouble started when almost 200 monkeys like the ones pictured here, were moved from a high security lab before scientists figured out they may have been exposed to the bacteria. the mungs were placed in --

teachers a raise and not cut their salaries. the san bruno parks school board voted two weeks ago to axe more than a dozen positions and not give raises. people are worried that bel air is this danger. >> this is my school and i want to fight for this, not only for my boy, the san bruno district. >> reporter: what are you guys protesting for? >> giving the teachers a raise. >> reporter: how do you feel about that? >> they should give the teachers a raise because they haven't given them one for ten years. >> reporter: how do you feel about your teachers? >> my teachers, i'm so happy with them and they taught me a lot. >> reporter: in mid-february, parents and teachers rallied outside a school board meeting saying school district officials had mismanaged funds. officials say the district has been dipping into the proceeds from the $30 million sale of carl sandberg elementary in 2005 but that pot is just about empty with lower enrollments

the students protesting proposed tuition hikes. they capped off their week-long protest with one final big demonstration, one that blocked the entrances to the santa cruz campus. >> i wouldn't be out here if i didn't think it would be effective. >> students at other uc schools held similar rallies, including at uc berkley. students gathered at spral plaza and carried signs that said "kill the hike". the twinkling light display on the bay bridge is no more this morning. they faded away and they'll be gone for 11 months. the farewell party was held last night and continued this morning. >> reporter: good morning tori. well, everybody has left now and gone to work, but for a period of about an hour, it was just classic san francisco. there was a huge crowd of people and we watched as they

hugged. there was a string quartet playing and they were all watching as the lights here faded out while the sun came up. here is a cool time lapse we put together for you showing the dancing light display on the western span of the bridge. it shows how the lights and the view really transformed during the early morning hours to sunrise. the lights are being removed for the next 11 months because the cables on the bridge need maintenance. the lights turned off around 6:40 a.m. and people clapped as it happened. a lot of locals came to the epic roast house on the embarcadero where there was a farewell celebration. locals showed up and acted like tourists taking pictures of the bridge. >> it's important for san francisco. i'm going to miss seeing it. it's a landmark now. >> reporter: the cascade of lights will be reinstalled and up in time for super bowl 50 in february. $4 million was raised in the

nonprofit organization called ililluminate the arts tell us the new lights will be stronger so they can ham the harsh conditions of the san francisco bay. and it definitely looks different out here. the light display has been up for the past two years, so people have really gotten used to seeing them and now they won't be able to for nearly a year. tori. >> thank you, janine. time is 8:37. meantime, coordinated police raids in oakland aimed at reducing gun violence, it led to the arrests of 17 members of two rival gangs. it was all the result of a month-long operation that targeted two oakland gangs. it was part of the cease fire program. investigators wouldn't give us details but they through these arrests, they've now solved two cold case homicides, one from 2008, the other from 2012. >> the real key is make sure that that crime reduction is sustained and that when, you know, when we come in and make

arrests in a community, we are there, we continue to pay attention to it, so that others don't move in. >> now, the effort to serve all those warnings and then make the arrests, it took more than 300 officers from the federal, state and local levels and they are still out there searching for at least 10 more gang members. the chp has apparently told one of its officers based in dublin they intend to fire him because of the scandal that involved officers sharing nude pictures from the cell phones of women who had been pulled over. the "san francisco chronicle" reports that the officer that chp bends to fire is one of the officers that received the stolen pictures. we've previously reported that officer shaun harrington shook the pictures from two female suspects' phones and texted them to other fellow officers. harrington resigned last year. meanwhile, the chp says a plain clothes officer did not violate department policy when he pointed his gun at anti- police protesters last december

this oakland. the investigation concluded the officer saved the life of his partner and others in the area. the officer and his partner were dressed in plain clothes to blend in with the crowd but demonstrators eventually became suspicious they were police. the officer said he drew his weapon had his partner was wrestling with a protester and the other demonstrators started to swarm them. a rash of thefts in sonoma county is leaving car owners with an expensive repair bill. sheriff's deputies say more than 30 catalytic converters have been stolen. it costs more than $3400 to replace the device that's part of the exhaust system. the thieves are after the precious metals in the converter. >> they will cut it at any section, could be here, there, anywhere, it's quick and easy. they have a metal saw and probably in less than 30 second, they're gone. >> the sheriff's department is urging drivers to use their garages to park their cars if

to overturn the lower court ruling that upheld bans on same- sex marriage in four states. this brief is arguing that a uniform principal allows for more diversity and inclusion in the work place. and they say it makes it easier to recruit and train employees. right now, same sex couples can legally marry in 37 states. the supreme court will hear oral arguments on the issue on april 28th. southern california republican is entering the race for barbara boxer's u.s. senate state. rocky chavez is the first major republican to enter the race. the former marine corps will face off against carmela harris. chavez said he's been involved in issues not necessarily associated with republicans but political analysts say it will be tough for a republican to win the senate seat where barbara boxer is retiring next year in a state dominated by democrats. if your latest diet plan is

clear to land. >> ford's plane lost its engine shortly after taking off. the plane clipped a tree and went down on a venice golf course. several golfers saw it all. >> we were playing golf and we're on the fifth hole, sixth tee and we saw the plane and all of a sudden the power went off. didn't quite make it to lincoln and turnaround and just came back coasting, very low and heard it hit. >> paramedics say ford was alert and talking when they arrived on the scene. reportedly he had a big gash on his head and there are now reports he underwent surgery for a broken ankle and pelvis but he's expected to make a full rover. apparently he's been -- make a full recovery. apparently he's been in a couple of plane accidents. >> but they say because of his skill with the plane, he prevented it from being a lot worse, kept it away from homes. >> could have been worse. time is 8:47. brian, you've got the skill with our commute.

how is the east shore doing? >> east shore is looking not too bad, guys. good morning. i'm glad that harrison ford is doing okay. there's a movie marathon on another network, indiana jones movies, that i like. let's take a look at the east shore freeway, if you will. we'll go to the maps. southbound 280 in the woodside area, this begins just west -- just south of 92. it gets better past golf lane for you but it's also affecting traffic on 84 through the bartolo valley. some a severe traffic alert southbound 280 in the woodside area. northbound 101 south of marsh road, there's an accident in menlo park. you have those accidents off northbound 101 affecting traffic so you got a nice smooth ride across the span but once you hit 101 it picks up in terms of traffic.

8:52. happening right now, ground breaking surgery at california pacific medical center in san francisco. one donor is saving six lives. pam. >> reporter: basically a domino effect. this is an incredible story we've been following all week. a team of surgeons is taking part in an unusual series of kidney trans plants. a donation chain is often necessary because a person in need of an organ has a family member willing to donate but is not a match. in this case, six people will be getting kidneys thanks to one donor who stepped up and put this chain in motion. >> it's kinds of overwhelming because i thought i was just

going to help this one person i don't know but the fact that so many people can have life extension, that's pretty big. >> i've been doing this for over 20 years and this kind of thing is very gratifying. we get to know our patients on the waiting list many times and we get to know how rough it is for these people who need a transplant, have a donor and can't use them because they're not compatible. >> two patients, that doctor got to know on the waiting list, april and alan langstrot. she waited five years for a match, her husband was not a match but gave his kidney to somewhere else. that was four years ago. i'm happy to say april is doing great. she and her husband here with us this morning. good morning. >> good morning. >> what's going on this morning must bring back a lot of memories? you waited so long for a match, what is it like to be part of this chain of people who have
