the hospital. azna smith is on the scene. what can you tell us about the search that is going on? >> reporter: it's an active search going on right now. santa clara sheriff deputy it is blocked off this area here on moore park avenue from ginger to monroe streets. more than 40 deputies and officers are on scene here. they set up a perimeter and are searching yard by yard for this inmate. he is not armed, but deputies say he is dangerous. we want to show you an inmate of the inmate just released from the sheriff's office. he has 40-year-old, janelle carter and he's in custody for five counts of child molestation stemming from a march 2014 case. here's what happened. around 1:30 this afternoon, carter was getting medical treatment, a routine appointment at santa clara medical center. when he got in a fight with a deputy injuring that deputy's shoulder and carter took off running. we learned a second deputy was

also injured in the arm searching for carter. deputies flooded the area. last seen him on moore park and thornton. chp assisted with flying their helicopters other nearby highways. 880 and highway 17. three k-9's from the sheriff's office are also helping with the search. so far, there have been no evacuations, but deputies have alerted nearby homes and businesses. >> we transport thousands and thousands of people every month and our transportation unit does an excellent job. he overpowered the deputy. injured the deputy and escape the during a medical appointment. the deputy acted admirably. >> our safety is at risk and the neighborhood is disrupted and we hope that whoever needs help down there gets it without causing problems to somebody else. >> reporter: we want to provide you a description of carter. he is african american. he was last seen wearing green

happening. >> all right, azna smith live in san jose where an inmate is on the loose. we'll check back in with you later. >> now to san leandro where police are being warned about possible threats from an oakland gang. ktvu's paul chambers is live in san leandro where authorities confirmed details about the particular incident tied to these threats. paul. >> the press conference wrapped up a little more than an hour ago where we learned police received credible threats against their officers back in december. officer involved shooting that happened at that time. since then, there have been two separate incidents. being followed home by possible gang members. >> san leandro police personnel that work at this police department are a little bit more cautious as to how we come and go from work. >> this is because of this officer involved shooting on december 7. investigators say they spotted a stolen vehicle in san leandro, but the driver led officers on a high speed chase into oakland.

police say when the driver was cornered, she rammed their cars several times while the officers were inside. officers ended up shooting and killing guadalupe. after that incident, police told san leandro officers about credible sources. a few nights later, a san leandro officer was followed home by four men. he was able to scare them away, but the men in the car wearing similar clothing. a few days later, another officer was followed home after a known gang member was arrested for firing shots at chp deputies. that is a possible road rage. officers say the driver of that car is tied to san leandro. officers say they train for these type of events and are being extra cautious. >> putting on your t-shirt and jeans and popping in your personal vehicle to drive home is kind of when the job should be over. these are instances in which we

are shown that law enforcement is a 24 hour a day job for everyone. >> officer involved shooting is still being investigated. it's being investigated by three separate agencies. now police here say they will not release the name of those officers involved because, of course, the threat and safety of their officers. heather. >> paul, such an unsettling time for those officers. thank you. san jose police are looking for help tracking down whoever fired at chp officers last night. two chp officers pulled over a driver on highway 101. they said that they heard a gun shot and saw flash of light. the officers weren't hit, but their car was. we spoke with one woman who lives nearby. her husband heard the gunfire and it happens way too often. >> i have to tell you, he wasn't surprised. so wasn't surprised at all. it wasn't something that seemed out of the norm. >> police say it's not clear if the officers were deliberately targeted.

the incident is considered an assault on a police officer with a firearm. >> marine biologists tonight are trying to figure out what caused a whale to wash up on a beach. a woman on her morning walk found this humpback whale. she took the pictures that you're looking at. state parks officers say the whale was likely dead when it floated to shore. marine biologists were there this afternoon. dozens of children at a school on the peninsula skipped classes today as part of a protest. ktvu's tara tells us why one teacher said seeing those students do that quote, warmed her heart. >> they are cutting class. students at belle air elementary school. instead, they are protesting cuts to their teacher salaries. >> so yeah, it's sad that they are cutting pay and making all the teachers leave. it's not fair in the first place. >> they should give the

teachers a raise. >> in the face of a $2 million deficit, the san bruno park school board is talking about shutting two schools. >> it's my school and i am fighting for this. not only for my boy, because for the district. it warms your heart. they are all out here for us because they love us and we love them. i'm so proud of our community being here and standing up for what they believe in. >> officials say the district has been dipping into the proceeds from the $30 million sale of carl sanberg elementary school in 2005. but now that money has run out. >> you're looking at giving them a 1% cut in salary and the other districts are getting an increase and they haven't had an increase in ten years here. i just don't see how you're going to retain good teachers. >> i don't think there is an easy or one answer that is going to address all of the work that is taking place right now to eliminate the structural deficit. >> the superintendent was bam

barded by questions from angry questions when he showed up on campus. the district says lower enrollments and special education costs put too big of a strain on the system. parents say the district has mismanaged funds. leading the school and teachers in alert. in san bruno, ktvu fox 2 news. >> despite a recent revision, faculty at four san francisco archdiocese high schools say they are still concerned about controversial morality clauses in a new employee handbook. the union representing teachers and administrators today said they are pleased that archbishop has agreed to stop using the word, minister or ministry to refer to teachers. but, union officials say the language of the clauses still create conflict and division and they are urging the archbishop to keep the current employee handbook in place. he unveiled the changes last month and they created a real uproar. among other things, he called

for faculty members to be in line with the catholic church and strict teaching against homosexuality and contraceptives. organizers are working around the clock to get ready for tomorrow's chinese new year parade in san francisco. ktvu fox 2 went behind the scenes today to get a look at the preparations and she tells us some of those floats are going high-tech this year. >> master float builder lives in a swirl of glitter on a san francisco pier. but it takes more than magic to build these fantastic creations. >> it's a lot of heart. probably the hardest artwork anybody can get into. >> this year's parade, the year of the ram boasts some 23 floats. >> this is southwest airlines and this is my love float. >> with hundreds of thousands of spectators, the parade has come a long way since the days thomas used to sneak on to the route in disguise back in the

early 80s. >> we kept making costumes and the parade came to us and said we love what you're doing. you don't need the golden mask. that was almost a deal killer. we ended up staying in the parade and then they gave me one float, then three floats, and five things. the next thing, i was building all the floats. >> glitter, glue, and the glamour of led lighting and projector screens. >> it's where hong kong and singapore have gone. here we have to pay three times, and it takes thousands of little led's to light up a tree or something like that. we've done a few in this parade. it's going to be extremely exciting. >> for those of you that can't make the parade in person, you can catch it on channel 2. it takes a small army for us to put it on the air. i'm sitting in the director's seat and they will call the shots to show you the parade in action. put you in the mid pl of the parade and experience at home what you might experience right here at the parade.

leave the department in the wake of the embezzling accusations. >> now after my report, the president of that organization has suddenly decided to retire. when lieutenant became president of the pride alliance in 2014, he initiated a financial audit of the gay officer's group. they revealed suspicious activity by the treasurer, a fellow officer. according to minutes and internal e-mails, lieutenant was reluctant to act and in fact, never reported the officer. >> how have you been? >> walking the foot beat, sergeant chuck was the highly visible gay members of the san francisco police force. his outgoing personality led him to be the mayor of the castro. in 2013, limbert was promoted to sergeant. he was elected president of the san francisco police officer's pride alliance. an organization that represents

roughly 200lgbt employees of the department. after taking office e he had questions about the group's finances and ordered a review. but after discoverying irregularities, he didn't report it and he's accused of pressuring fellow officers to look the other way. >> can you give it to me? >> as we were first to report, pride alliance treasurer and officer, mike evans, resigned from the department. after he withdrew more than $15,000 from the group's account. pulling money from atm's and paying personal bills. the district attorney is deciding whether to file criminal charges. we've learned getting the case to the d.a. almost didn't happen. >> were there attempts to keep this quiet? >> i was told it was not a police situation. it was just a pride alliance and that no one would go forward to the police department that it would be handled internally. >> this pride alliance board member said it was the organization's president, lieutenant limbert who wanted to keep his boss out of it.

>> you had a lieutenant of the department suggesting a crime not be reported. >> correct. >> meeting minutes show he voted repeatedly to keep the embezzlement issue in closed session. excluding the membership and the public and he voted against informing the internal affairs bureau of the corruption. >> we are here to ask about the embezzlement of funds from the pride alliance. why did you not report it to police? >> believe me, it was reported. >> but not by limbert. other members turned him in. taking action after he sent his e-mail. asking that the issue remained confidential and insisting it not be followed up by any division of sfpd. >> aren't you under orders to report it to police? >> the embezzlement inquiry before shutting it out of the pride alliance meeting. >> i don't want to ever hear anything that challenges the character of any of my officers. >> greg told me according to regulations, all officers have

a duty to report crime, including by another cop. but that lieutenant limbert, president of one of the officer groups, did not have to come forward. since others did first. >> what do you want your lieutenants to do? if they know a crime is happening, don't you want to know that? >> absolutely, and i expect that. >> an expectation that wasn't met this time. the lieutenant will avoid questions about his lack of action in the embezzlement case. the openly gay officer in the department turned in his badge effective last weekend. and like mike evans, was allowed to walk away from the controversy. >> gosh, it does seem suspect. here you have the officer who is accused of the embezzlement, resigns from the force, and the lieutenant who some accuse of covering up the crime now retire from the force. >> yeah, i mean, certainly people just deciding that they don't want to be subject to the

a group of kidney doctors and recipients is recovering after doctors in san francisco today successfully completed a rare kidney transplant chain. i want to show you video from one of the surgeries yesterday at california pacific medical center. doctors say they successfully completed three more transplants today after performing three transplants yesterday. doctors had this message about organ donation. >> these procedures sometimes are not safe. they are safe, and we need more volunteers. >> a reception for the donors

and their families is being planned for march 25. >> workers at doctors hospital in san pablo are taking an unusual step to keep their hospital from closing. they have written a letter to billionaires here in the bay area asking for help. the national union of healthcare workers is targeting the 70 richest people here, including larry ellison. the union says if those billionaires were to give 1/10 of 1% of their combined net worth, the hospital would have enough money to stay open for the next 20 years. doctors hospital is facing a dire financial situation since many of their patients are poor and can't pay. if the hospital does close, patients would have to drive to berkeley to get care. >> the oakland raiders will call the coliseum home next season, but the team's future after that, well it remains in doubt. the coliseum authority unanimously approved the raiders lease to play the 2015 season in oakland. coliseum authority board members and the raiders said they plan to talk about additional lease extensions and

was hard working and also humble. >> they say he never missed a day of work. he was walking here from the bus stop when it happened. now police are hoping a witness to the crime will come forward. >> his roommate says salvador garcia was like a brother to him. >> my friend together in the apartment is like family. >> garcia never made it home from work after his wednesday shift. it was hayward police who showed up at the apartment instead. >> only accident. >> in fact, investigators didn't know what to make of the situation at first. just before 10:00 p.m. wednesday, garcia had been found bleeding in a parking lot. steps from where he worked. hours later, he died from his injuries. police concluded he had been struck by a car that took off. they are hoping surveillance cameras or witnesses may lead them to that vehicle or that someone might spot a car with damage. >> we would expect that the

available show that california is adding jobs at a pretty steady clip. the employment development department said the jobless rate for january fell to 6.9%. in december, it was 7.1%. the lower numbers came in with the addition of more than 67,000 jobs. nationwide, the unemployment rate is lower. now at 5.5%. that is the lowest level since the middle of 2008. the labor department reported a gain of 295,000 jobs last month. that was more than analysts expected. that strong jobs report caused a selloff on wall street today amid a growing expectation of higher interest rates. the dow fell 278 points. the nasdaq and s & p 500 also dropped. just a few days ago, the nasdaq was above 5,000 and the dow and s and p were at record highs. >> actor harrison ford is still in the hospital tonight in southern california after his small plane crashed on to a golf course yesterday afternoon. and today we heard from a doctor who just happened to be

playing golf there at the time and he helped pull harrison ford from the plane. christina gonzalez talked to that doctor about what he saw and did when he first got to the plane. >> piece by piece, national transportation safety board investigator removed the single engine plane that actor harrison ford was piloting when he crashed that golf course. >> the engine will be examined. the records of the aircraft will be examined and ultimately will submit a report. >> the plane is a vintage world war ii trainer which ford owns and maintains immaculately, according to sources at santa monica airport where the famous actor was trying to land when he crashed. >> first thing i noticed was that fuel was leaking out. the smell of gas was very evident. >> that spinal surgeon who just happenedded to be on the

7th hole when ford's plane came down a few hundred feet away. >> passenger lay in the airplane, slumped over. so, i think the first instinct was, you know, i don't want this to catch on fire. >> so he and a handful of other golfers pulled ford out of the plane. >> the folks that were with us were able to take him out of the seat belt. we lifted him out, stabilized his neck, and moved him maybe 10 or 15 yards away from the wreckage. >> it wasn't until then he realized who the pilot was. >> there's a lot of blood on his face and his body and he was conscious. he was conscious. he was talking. as you'd imagine, you'd be stunned and you just be saying where am i, that kind of thing. he was stunned. >> paramedics took ford to the hospital where he is being treated. the doctor says he is surprised that ford was not critically injured. >> he did a very good job at stabilizing that airplane and the fact that you look at the

the nonprofit tells us the new lights will be stronger to handle the harsh conditions of the san francisco bay. in san francisco, ktvu fox 2 news. >> the san francisco police department today celebrated the newest members to join the ranks. ten new officers graduated from the department's 245th academy class. the chief of police today said the recruits were chosen because they have all the things the department is looking for. integrity, compassion, and above all, a desire to help people. the ceremony was for lateral officers, which means they all came from other law enforcement departments. >> each of you has previous experience in law enforcement. some of you are veterans of the united states. armed forces and others have received high honors for your performance in the field. and today as you graduate with dignity and honor, you now represent the san francisco police department. >> the new graduates all completed an intense six-week

the national transportation safety board has begun its investigation into that delta passenger jet that skidded off the runway at laguardia airport yesterday. overnight, cranes lifted that jet from the end of the runway and moved it into a hanger. it skidded to the left and hit a berm and a fence. it came to a stop just feet from the icy water next to the airport. one aviation analyst said the cause may have been more than just the snow. >> the weather is going to actually have a role in this accident. there's a reason why this airplane went off to the left and that's really the critical piece. >> none of the 127 passengers and 5 crew members were

[ applause ] >> zander was applauded by strangers, greeted by high school buddies. >> i haven't seen them in ten months. >> he looks different. left as an 18-year-old kid and came back as a 19-year-old man. >> not all this. >> a presentation of coins and a plaque. >> we knew that this was a young man that deserved to be celebrated returning home from afghanistan. >> zander was part of the explorers program in high school. >> it's a little different going along patrols. >> and he plans to join the force after the army. >> i want to work here. >> as soon as he is age ready and as soon as he is done with the commitment to the u.s. army. we will take the steps to put him in the police academy.

about. here's our future cast showing you this and basically clear skies up and down the coast for tomorrow. and then into the afternoon hours, that warmup is back here. basically that green contour, upper 60s. the yellow contour, widespread 70s. there's the headline into your saturday forecast. high pressure is here and the compression that is warming air coupled with that offshore breeze and sticks around for tomorrow. now into sunday, this offshore wind will weaken and as a result, we're going to bring in more clouds, at least low clouds and fog could be bumping up into parts of the coastline. we're looking for the chance of rain. here's the frontal system for tuesday. basically just dies and we could have some clouds and the chance of a popup shower into wednesday. that chance is going down rapidly. forecast highs for tomorrow, mainly in the 70s out there. lots of 70s across the bay area for oakland, liver more, out toward antioch and brentwood, san jose 74. santa cruz easily back up into the mid 70s.

when other demonstrators started to swarm them. some witnesses say the officer never showed his badge or identified himself as law enforcement. but the chp says the officer did show his badge and concluded that his actions did not violate department policy. >> an arrest outside a church where a teenager was busted with what looked like a box of cereal. this is what that box of cereal looked like. as you can see, it resembles the cereal fruit loops, but police say those fruit loops were laced with marijuana. police also found a package of rock candy marijuana edibles. officers discovered two juveniles and four young adults and smelled marijuana. as they investigated, officers say 18-year-old tara admittedded to having marijuana. she was arrested and booked into the jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of marijuana for sale. additional charges of selling marijuana within a thousand feet of the high school could also be filed against her.

now to berkeley where a woman decided to take matters into her own hands. one cup of soup at a time. she wants to help the nearly 4200 people who are homeless in alameda county. new at 5:00, ktvu fox 2 reporter, ali rasmus shares the woman's story. >> reporter: every thursday and sunday evening, barbra prepares a feast for 50 of her friends. >> her brothers and sisters on the street. >> one thanksgiving a couple years ago, she had extra food and extra time and wanted to do something with it. >> everybody always says, you know, oh go serve the soup kitchen. that didn't have any appeal to me. you don't really interact with the people. >> she decided to become her own mobile soup kitchen. year and a half later -- >> this is like an obsession.
