we last spoke to you at 5:00, sheriff deputies have since called off the search and they just opened moore park avenue. 40-year-old, janelle carter was last seen in this area running after he was getting medical treatment at santa clara valley medical center and he injured a deputy in the shoulder and then he took off running. i want to bring in sergeant james jenson of the sheriff's office. and sergeant jen son, why did you call off this search? >> we believe the inmate got out of our perimeter area. we were doing yard to yard search and he was no longer in our perimeter. >> i know the suspect is a child molester. what do you say to those folks out here who are on edge? >> reporter: this is the highest priority for the sheriff's office. we are still going to be in the area. we'll have a large presence in the area. chp is also aware and san jose pd. >> i know sheriff, lori smith

was out here and she service talking to us as well. this person injured, sheriff deputy, do we know if he is dangerous or what can you tell us? >> he is dangerous. he is a child molester. we are worried about it. he did injure a deputy. the deputy is in the emergency room with a shoulder injury. it's important that the public calls 911 if they do see him. >> and what do you tell the public if they do see him? don't approach him? >> don't approach, shelter and place and call 911 immediately. >> where in the vicinity should people be concerned about? >> we searched the general area where our perimeter was. we'll still be in the area. we know he's from campbell. so i would be on the lookout anywhere around the area. >> all right, thank you so much. we really appreciate your time. i want to mention a second deputy was injured in the arm during the search. real quick, we want to provide a description of the suspect. he is 40-year-old, carter and he is wearing green elmwood

learned of threats from an east oakland gang and two officers have been followed home and the east oakland gang may be involved. >> unfortunately, these are instances here in which we have now shown that law enforcement is a 24 hour a day job for everyone. >> san leandro police are not releasing the names of the officers involved in that deadly shooting because of the threat. new developments now from @ oakland city attorney's office. city attorney, barbra parker dismissed injunctions against two gangs. in place since 2010, the injunctions restricted the movement of 55 gang members in north oakland and the fruitvail area. focusing on other gang intervention strategies, which is why the injunctions were discontinued. today, we learn that a man who was killed in a hit-and-run earlier this week was on his way to work when it happened. salvador garcia was found

bleeding wednesday night. that was steps from where he worked. hours later, garcia died at the hospital from his injuries. police concluded that he had been hit by a car that took off and they hope surveillance cameras or witnesses will help lead them to that car. garcia was on his way to his temp job at special logistics when it happened. he took the last bus every night and would wait a couple hours before his midnight shift began. >> he was here for three or four months through the temp agency. he never missed a day. never missed a single day and like i said, every day he would come in saying hi to everybody. everybody loves him here and we all want to help out. >> police say the car likely sustained some type of front end damage to the hood, bumper, or broken glass. new at 6:00, a high-tech bay area insurance startup going the extra mile for a customer who fell victim to a car thief. police say key piece of technology inside the car helped them track down that thief. ktvu's tom vacar in our newsroom now to explain.

tom. >> in fact, two of them. high-technology has many unanticipated consequences, but sometimes very good ones. >> we first showed you san francisco based metro mile when it launched california service last july. you simply plug this device into your car's on board computer port and pay for your car insurance based on the actual miles you drive. it monitors not only mileage, but the location of the car. ryan and his partner both metro mile customers learned of an unexpected benefit two days ago. >> my partner gets up to go to work and he comes back inside and says, the car is gone. >> he opened up his app on his smart phone and looked for his car's where abouts. >> the car is not in the valley, but in bay view. >> he called the police department and gave them the location of the car, but soon the car started moving around making it hard for the police to find. so he called metro mile and got hooked up with customer service

agent, alex bosman who looked up his car on her system. >> ours is faster so i was able to look it up and get them the real time updates on where the car was at. >> she kept passing that information along to the police car. >> i watched them zigzag around the bay view area and then finally noticed they had stopped for awhile. >> the cops pull into the dead end street in bay view and they found our car with the two suspects inside and that car was parked next to another car that was stolen. >> after arresting those two suspects, the police called the other owner to pick up her stolen car as well. >> the officers were cheering. i told alex, she was cheering. we were all high fiving. it was a fun moment. >> really exciting to hear that we had helped crack something that even bigger than one stolen car. that was great. >> so after the police removed the suspects and all of their drug paraphernalia. both victims were able to get their cars back unharmed. tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. >> amazing what technology can

do. thank you very much. >> the mountain view company that makes turbo tax has been notified about a recent spike in fraudulent income tax filings. turbo tax is the most popular do it yourself tax preparation software in the country. the maker says it was contacted by the department of justice and other federal agencies and wants to prove that its products are secure. last month, turbo tax stopped processing state returns for 24 hours because of an increase in fake filings. those emogis can be used to express a wide array of emotions. ban a new one that is getting a lot of attention. a round face with a double chin is being used to express when you're feeling fat. it is causing some outrage among many who say it promotes body shaming. a change.org petition is circulating to get rid of that. preparations are underway tonight for a san francisco tradition and this time

tomorrow, the chinese new year parade will be in full swing ktvu's david stevenson is live to update us. >> reporter: huge crowds are expected to turn out to see floats like this one and for a couple other events in san francisco. so police want people prepared for heavy traffic tomorrow. it takes a lot of glitter. >> we don't have time to build a new one. >> and a lot of grit to pull together these 23 floats for the chinese new year parade. >> we have a little less than 24 hours. we have until it gets dark, basically. to have everything locked down generators were trucked in as pier 54 began final assembly. sponsors dropped by to make sure their message shown through. >> in union square, crews

ready to broadcast center for the parade. san francisco streets are set to close early in the morning to start lining up the floats. police say the great weather combined with the parade, a beer festival at fort mason and a black cuisine festival. promise to make saturday traffic a mess. >> so what's going to happen, if you are going to come to san francisco, give yourself extra time and take public transportation if possible. >> extra time is in extra supply. at&t rushed to complete its float. parade goers can play an interactive game to guide a lost sheep home. >> the entire float will burst in colors and people will be able to see the float from possibly a mile away. >> again, public transit is recommended a full list of street closures and public transit lines that are affected by this weekend's events are available online at sfmta.org.

>> some good advice. those floats look spectacular. can't wait to see them. and you can watch the chinese new year parade right here on ktvu fox 2. live coverage begins at 6:00 tomorrow night and we will reair the parade at 9:00 p.m. on tv 36. san francisco mayor, ed lee today honored several people for helping families and residents recover after a recent fires in the mission district. two large fires in the mission in recent months left dozens of people without a home and also left several businesses damaged. one of those fires was in january. it was a four alarm fire at mission and 22nd and it killed one person. today mayor ed lee commended people who stepped up to help those affected by the fires. they included the volunteers of the red cross and residents who helped raise money for fire victims. >> the people that are standing here in front of you are today, people that i believe have hearts of gold. and that i'm proud of their

a driver plowed into a nail salon. just about 2:00. the salon is difficult to see, because it's behind all of the scaffolding that you see there. the car was reportedly backing up at the time of the crash. we're told that no one was hurt. today investigators removed harrison ford's plane from a venice golf course piece by piece. ford crashed right after taking off from the santa monica airport yesterday afternoon. the ntsb will examine the engine to figure out why that vintage world war ii era plane

went down. a spinal surgeon just happened to be playing golf when ford's plane crashed. he rushed over and noticed the smell of gas and he and a handful of other golfers worked quickly to pull ford out of the plane. >> the folks that were with us were able to take him outover the seat belt. we lifted him out, stabilized his neck and moved him maybe 10 or 15 yards way from the wreckage. >> the doctor said there was a lot of blood on harrison ford's face, even so, doctors say ford is expected to make a full recovery. new at 6:00, a dangerous fall for a bay area first grader who tripped and fell on her shoe lace. now it doesn't sound very serious, but is the way that little girl fell that made her injuries much worse. >> ktvu's rob ross spoke to the little girl's mother whose quick thinking may have saved her life. >> at children's hospital -- >> how are you doing? >> good. >> are you feeling all right? >> doctors say seven-year-old

sophia should be able to go home either tonight or tomorrow after a week here. she can't wait. >> i want to go feed my fishes, look at my frog. say hi to my dog. >> depending on your point of view, she is lucky or unlucky. last friday, the first grader was walking in the schoolyard and didn't realize her shoe laces. these shoe laces were untide. >> while i was walking, i tripped on my shoe lace and i fell on my side on the curb. >> she tripped on her shoes here and fell against that. >> she fell hard on the curb right between her ribs and the hip. the school called her mother and knew this was no ordinary childhood fall. >> there was no visible mark anywhere on her from where she fell, but she was very pail and pale and she was in a lot of pain. >> sophia ended up at lew cease packard where she had a fractured kidney leaking blood and urine. >> this is very unusual.

we see it from people who have fallen from a great distance or playing contact sports and take a significant hit to the kidney. >> this is what they saw on the right side of the screen. >> they put a tube in sophia's kidney so fluids will flow normally and let the kidney heal on its own. doctors expect sophia to make a fullrecovery. but if her mother hadn't gotten her checked out immediately, her situation could have been dire. >> she could have bled a lot and gone into shock and possibly died if the parents hadn't followed up. >> i didn't want to let it go. that, as a parent, trust that instinct and even if it turns out to be nothing, so much the better. than you've caught it if it is something. >> sophia says she'll be paying closer attention to her shoe laces from now on.

livermore and san jose. santa rosa 75. looks like we're setting up for the chinese new year parade in san francisco where we have mostly clear skies right now. forecast headlines tonight, fair skies, mostly sunny skies and warm. the extended forecast, minor cooling. we'll have the forecast for tomorrow coming up in a little bit. for livermore and for your saturday, temperatures starting out in the 40s. a nice recovery into the afternoon hour. the readings back up into the 70s. clear skies first thing saturday morning and then into the afternoon hours, temperatures on track to reach at least the mid 70s. 74, 75 degrees. upper 60s to near 70 right near the immediate coastline. so high pressure is still in charge of our weather. it sticks around for saturday as we have those offshore winds, keeping the temperatures on the warm side. into sunday, a change in the wind direction and with that, you'll see that coming up here. some of that patchy fog could be approaching parts of the coastline into sunday.

the raiders are going to call the coliseum home for one more year, but the team's future after that is up in the air. the coliseum authority unanimously approved the team's one year lease at the coliseum for the 2015 season. of course there are still discussions between the team and local leaders to build a new stadium on the same site. you'll recall just two weeks ago, the team announced plans to partner with the san diego chargers on a potential stadium outside of los angeles. >> from football to baseball and boy yesterday talking about hunter and devastating blow to giants. they were back in action today. >> always got the high spirits and what did you call it?
