police warn of an attempted kidnapping tonight after a teenage girl says a man tried to pull her into his car. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes in tonight for julie. >> and i'm frank somerville. a 15-year-old girl tells police she was walking home from school today when the man grabbed her. tonight we talked to a woman who actually heard the screams. we get this developing news now from ken pritchett, she's in hayward with the description of the vehicle police are now looking for, ken. >> reporter: hiward >> reporter: hi -- hayward police say it was a newer brand honda civic with paper plates and it was parked here on whitman street. a man in his 20s police say was

standing at the back of that car when a 15-year-old high school sophomore was walking by. police say the man didn't say a word. that he just reached out, grabbed her and tried to drag her away. it was just after 4:00 p.m. on a neighborhood street. patricia richardson was getting ready for a nap when she heard the screams. >> i heard screaming, then she just said no then she screamed on top of her lungs, then i heard -- >> reporter: this is loud. >> this is very loud. >> reporter: patricia heard the screams of a teen trying to escape what would be a kidnapper. patricia called 911 and police arrive. >> she was able to fight him off. and quickly was able to separate herself from him and ran. >> reporter: the teenager was walking home from tennison high

school about two miles away. cynthia says that she often sees kids walking by her. >> it's not right to be scared of walking home from school at any time. that's just not right. >> we're concerned this could be a repeat criminal that's out there. and we're very concerned for a particular age of 12 to 17 years old. that might be walking home alone. >> reporter: police say the victim did the right thing fought and screamed. it gave patricia a fright but she's glad she heard what she did. >> that's what you need to do. scream for help. yeah, and that's -- i'm glad she got away. >> reporter: hayward police say they're worried this could be a repeat offender because two weeks ago there was another attempted abduction of a teenager and in that case it was also a white male in his 20s. 5'6", 5'7" also driving a white sedan. police have additional descriptions of this suspect. including what he was wearing. we have those details for you

on ktvu.com. well, at least that young girl is safe tonight. ken pritchett live in hayward this evening, thanks ken. new at 10:00 tonight, two security screeners were arrested today on drug smuggling charges. the fbi says the two tsa employees were allowing a 28- year-old man from san francisco to sneak meth on to planes in exchange for money. he allegedly made dry runs to hawaii. according to authorities the manmade sure the screeners would be in place when his luggage went through x-ray machines. an investigation was put in place. claudia rene sunicx and amanda lopez of south san francisco were identified. now to the south bay where authorities are looking for an

escaped inmate after he overpowered a sheriff's deputy during a medical appointment. the inmate is identified as this man, jonel carter. he's been in jail for about a year after being convicted of five countsover child molestation. his escape on to police and deputies to lock down the san jose neighborhood surrounding santa clara valley medical center. ktvu's cara liu is live in san jose where authorities showed up to an alert in that neighborhood, cara. >> reporter: they tell me they believe it's connected to the inmate that escaped from the hospital. a short time ago they believe this guy got away from the complex before they got here. >> reporter: deputies and police along with canines returned to a neighborhood near thornton and moore park this evening. a flurry of police activity in and around the apartment

building. authorities searched extensively looking for 43-year- old jonel carter. nearly a half mile stretch of the park were shut down. >> helicopters were flying around the neighborhood. we have never been this busy. >> reporter: they tell us he was being transported to the santa clara hospital. >> we transport thousands and thousands of people. our officials have done a wonderful job. he overpowered the deputy. injured the deputy and left. >> reporter: residents were scared to learn he had been

incarcerated for child molestation. >> child molestation? i think that's the cue for us to go home. >> thank god my son is safe. >> reporter: the sheriff deputy could not confirm whether he was shackled or not during the time of his escape. >> he's not armed but he's dangerous. he's willing to injure a deputy to escape. >> reporter: he got away after injuring a deputy's shoulder. he was wearing green clothing. but in all likelihood he has changed clothes by now. they say they are still looking for him there's also a pack of canines looking for him as we speak. julie. >> reporter: thank you so much cara. so it appears as though they might have information after this robbery there. thank you so much cara. there was another search in san jose early today after someone fired a shot that hit a highway patrol car. highway101 near tele road was shut down while officers searched for evidence. two chp officers pulled over a car around 11:30 when they saw a flash and then heard a shot.

no one was hurt but a bullet hit their patrol car. a woman living near by told us her husband heard the gunfire but didn't think anything of it. >> i have to tell you, he wasn't surprised. he wasn't surprised at all. it wasn't something that seemed out of the norm. >> reporter: san jose police are handling the investigation and say it's not clear if the officers were deliberately targeted. new at 10:00, video of an incident at a high school in oakland that's resulted in two security guards being suspended. now this video shows a male student being put in a choke hold and then dragged away. they are on the upper part of your screen. it happened in january of last year at fremont high. but the video wasn't reviewed until recently when the students parents filed the legal inquiry. district officials say the boy punched one of the guards and one guard hit the boy three times. that happened mostly off

camera. the school superintendent calling it excessive force. the case has been forwarded for investigation. these are pictures of a dead whale at the surf in watsonville. a woman who was out taking her morning walk took the pictures. a marine biologist says it was a younger hump back. monterey is a feeding area for the whales. thousands of people are expected in downtown san francisco tomorrow night for the annual chinese new year parade. now work started months ago and tonight the finishing touches are being applied. amber lee live in union square and amber it is quite a production this year. >> reporter: yes it is. we are at powell and this is where ktvu has set up a temporary studio to broadcast the parade live. earl littler tonight we went behind the scenes to take a

look at the scramble to get everything ready. >> okay, and one, two, three. >> reporter: in the final hours, the finish floats with expensive electronic equipment are pushed inside a warehouse for safekeeping. >> thank you, i got past the hard part. >> reporter: long days of creating two dozen floats coming to an end. >> adrenaline, it's all adrenaline. >> reporter: red and gold the color of favor. symbols of wealth and good fortune. >> it's the year of the ram. >> reporter: the animal is represented on many floats. to 800 pounds of glitter, and 2 miles of decorative paper were used to build these eye catching attractions. the final test is when they are seen by the public. >> it's like the first time you get a painting and you put it in the a frame. our frame is the street. so we want to see how it looks from the street. >> reporter: an early test of the floats appeal.. this woman drove along the waterfront and all the glitter from the floats caught her eye. >> i had to stop and see what

little sleeping bags for their phones to give their phones a rest until tomorrow night. >> we'll see how many people are successful about doing it. i like the concept. i'm going to try it. thanks jana, good luck. a teenager had to be rescued from lands end after he fell 200 to 300 feet down a cliff. the 17-year-old was with friends taking pictures about 4:00 this afternoon when he slipped and fell. the fire department said he was on a trail near dead man's rock. he was wearing flip-flops and simply lost his footing. firefighters said that he was lucky he wasn't more seriously hurt. also in san francisco a driver plowed into a nail salon leaving some scaffolding in a bad position. the driver was reportedly backing up at the time of the

crash. the scaffolding was left leaning. fire crews and workers had to stabilize it. fortunately no one was hurt. a bay area first grader has been in the hospital for the past week now. recovering from some pretty serious injuries. the girl's medical crisis began when she tripped on her shoe lace. her mother's quick response just may have saved her life. >> reporter: at lucielle packered's children's hospital. >> hi sofia, how are you doing. are you feeling all right? >> reporter: doctors say angeline should be able to go home after a week here. she can't wait. >> i want to go see my pictures, say hi to my dog. >> reporter: depending on your point of view, sofia is either very lucky or very unlucky. last friday the first grader was walking the schoolyard and didn't realize her shoe laces, these shoe laces were untied. >> while i was walking i tripped on my shoe lace, and i

fell on my side on the curb. >> reporter: she tripped on her shoes here and fell against that. she fell hard on the curb right between her ribs and her hip. the school called her mother, she came immediately and knew this was no ordinary childhood fall. >> there was no visible fall on her from where she fell but she was very pail -- peal and she was in a lot of pain so i could tell there was something seriously wrong. >> reporter: the doctors discovered a fractured kidney leaking blood and urine. >> this is a very unusual injury. we see it in athletes. >> reporter: they will let the kidney heal on its own. doctors expect sofia to make a full recovery. that their accident shouldn't prevent her from playing sports or whatever she likes to do. but if sofia's mother hadn 't

gotten her checked out immediately, sofia's injury could have been dire. >> she could have bled a lot. >> i couldn't let it go. as a parent i think that's the best thing you can do. trust that instinct. if it turns out to be nothing. so much the better. then you caught it if you thought it was something. >> doctors in san francisco today successfully completed that rare kidney transplant chain. doctors at california pacific center completed three transplants yesterday and three more today. this is video from yesterday's surgery. the six transplants helped three people. the three will tell their stories firsthand when the

hospital holds a reception. temperatures over the past two days have been trending upward and that trend continues through the day. santa rosa maxed out. 76degrees. san francisco 70. we'll do it all over once again when we head into your saturday forecast. right now we have clear skies over the state of california. the storm track is way out here over the pacific and just a few more clouds approaching the tip of california. still warm, still dry. overnight lows tomorrow morning starting out the day in the upper 30s and the coolest locations, out toward napa and fairfield. the widespread 40s out there in san francisco and pacifica. right around 50 degrees with mostly clear skies for your saturday morning. in fact, here's a break down for livermore. the temperature time line at 6:00 starting the day in the 40s. a nice recovery into the afternoon hours as temperatures by 3:00 and 4:00 easily back up into the 70s. here's our forecast model. clear skies at the top.

a security breach. of patient records. the department of public health told us that a doctor is accused of removing copies of patient records from the hospital and trauma center. the doctor workedded at the hospital from 2005 to 2013. the city health department hasn 't released the doctor's name but they learned of the breach during an investigation of the person. they didn't give a reason why he took the records but they are working to get them back. now to hayward, where police are searching for a hit- and-run suspect. salvador garcia is found bleeding on west winton avenue. ann rubin tells us he was on

his way to work when something happened. >> my friend of maybe 10 years. we lived together in the apartment, he's my family. >> reporter: but garcia never made it back home. >> he said fell on his head. only an accident. >> reporter: investigators didn't know what to make of the investigation at first. just before 6:00 p.m. wednesday garcia had been found bleeding in a parking lot at 2660 winston steps from where he worked. hours later he died from his injuries. police concluded he had been struck by a car that drove off. they're hoping a surveillance camera or witnesses may lead them to that suspect. >> we would think that the vehicle may have sustained some damage to the car. maybe hood, bumper or broken glass. >> reporter: garcia had been coming to his temp job.

as always, he would take the last possible bus and wait for his shift started. >> he would get to work two hours before his shift started. >> reporter: now they're just hoping for answers about his death. >> we're hoping that somebody around here, whether it be cameras or witness or a truck driver sleeping out there. maybe they saw something, hopefully they step forward and say something. and hopefully those clues will lead to whoever did this. >> reporter: there are surveillance cameras at the parking lot. anyone with information on this case is asked to contact hayward police. in hayward,ana liu. it is the first progress report since work at the port was slowed down by that labor dispute. the union struck a deal for a

a man trying to get away from sheriff's deputy was hit by a car. deputies were first called to this complex around noon today. on reports of a fight or some sort of domestic disturbance. the man had already slipped away but then the chp spotted him near by. >> we determined that they had been looking for him. he apparently knew that they were looking for him. attempted to hide. came down the side of the hill and tried to come across the freeway. >> reporter: the man attempted to cross 10 lanes of traffic. he was struck by a mazda miata before he reached the divide. the man suffered critical injuries. police say it has been difficult to identify him because he uses multiple aliases. nine abandoned puppies all

turned in to the shelter all have found homes. >> in fact, the shelter had to turn dozens of people down. >> debora villalon live in nevada on why these puppies attracted such a crowd. >> reporter: people were waiting at the door at opening this morning. all of them wanting one of the nine -week-old puppies. they had been neutered and vaccinated and now they're out the door. >> are you thinking about a name? >> not yet. we haven't come up with a name yet. >> reporter: rick borhes feels like he just won the puppy lottery. >> she's such a doll. >> reporter: adopting one of the labrador mix. he had been wanting a companion for his 10-year-old lab and like so many people saw this picture. the crate full of siblings that launched a craze here at the marin humane society. >> we just posted this on our facebook page and it blew up. there were hundreds.

literally hundreds. we got calls from texas. from virginia. >> reporter: someone is going to come here from texas for that one. >> yeah, yeah. >> reporter: is that why he's got the texas? >> right. >> we feel for animals that are left outside, left to the elements. it was certainly a very sad start for them. i think that really kind triggered something. >> the man who claims he found these puppies next to a dumpster near a convenience store hasn 't been reachable ever since. it's possible he was the actual owner. but it's not unusual for people to become overwhelmed caring for a litter. >> we were able to somehow track down the mom of those puppies, we would be able to get her spayed so the cycle of homeless animals doesn't repeat. >> reporter: after sleeping off their spay surgery, these two will bounce back just like their brothers did. by saturday, all nine will be

off to new digs. >> take a look. yeah. you're going to go to a good home aren't you. >> reporter: their plight was touching but shelters all over the bay area have dogs just as adorable and adoptable waiting now. >> a lot of these animals have stories dramatic stories. you're saving a life when you adopt an animal. >> all right, say goodbye. say goodbye. >> reporter: rick borhe says his new pup is a surprise gift for his wife. no doubt that was a fun introduction. and frank, back that little l ab -- i bet that little lab has a name right about now. >> all of these nine got adopted out. are they finding that all of the other people that wanted to adopt those nine are may be interested in some of the other dogs that were there. >> i'm sure that's the hope. that while they're in the shelter they might take a look around. and may be considered along with puppies that are so cute some of the older dogs because they have a lot to offer too and they don't chew everything up quite as much.

>> i can totally relate to that. debora villalon live tonight. investigators dismantled harrison ford's plane and removed it piece by piece. ford crashed the open cockpit plane shortly after taking off from the santa monica airplane. it clipped a tree and went down on a golf course. a surgeon just happened to be playing near by. he ran over to the plane and noticed the smell of gas. he joined a group of other golfers to pull ford out of the plane. >> the folk that is were with us were able to take him out of the seat belt. we stabilized his neck and moved him 10 to 15 yards away from the wreckage. >> the witness said there was a lot of blood on ford's face from the lacerations on his face. he is expected to make a full recovery. the delta jet that skidded off the runway had also been removed and is now in a hanger.

investigators from the national transportation safety board are now trying to figure out what wept wrong. thursday's snowstorm was one factor but there may have been human and mechanical factors. 132 people were on board. 24 of them complained of minor injuries. a bay area soldier is back home tonight after spending nine months in afghanistan. and he got quite a greeting. ktvu's cristina rendon tells us his dad says that his son left to afghanistan as a kid and came back as a man. >> reporter: a motorcade through the streets of san francisco was an unexpected welcome pst matt sanders. >> still overwhelmed a little bit. >> reporter: he was welcomed at city hall. his family met with the patriot guard riders to prep for his homecoming. a quick prayer and it was off to the airport.

>> not much sleep last night. >> reporter: where dad kirk sander. >> it's been almost a year since we've seen him. >> reporter: rushed to the terminalgate. >> count down has been on for a week. >> very emotional. >> reporter: moments later. >> zander appeared through the passengers and walked through the crowd straight into his mother's arms. zander was applauded by strangers and greeted by high school buddies. >> it's so emotional. i haven't seen him in 10 months. it's great to see everybody. >> he looks different. left an 18-year-old kid and came back a 19-year-old man. >> reporter: there was more once he got to city hall. >> i was expecting my family and friends but not all this. >> reporter: that got a plaque. >> we knew this was a young man that needed to be honored. >> reporter: he plans to join

a warning has gone out to san leandro police officer. they're being told to be alert and be careful because of credible threats from a gang in oakland. all this from a chase that wednesday from san leandro to oakland. guadalupe ochoa who rammed

their car, so they opened fire and killed her. that's when police say they've learned of threats from a gang and two officers say they've been followed home. >> those are incidents where we have shown that law enforcement is a 24 hour day job for everyone. >> reporter: san leandro police are not releasing the names of the officers involved in the shooting because of the threats. eric holder announced he's prepared to disband the ferguson police department to change what is going on there. the investigation did uncover disproportionate arrests of minorities and of practice of using criminal fines to raise money for the city. holder called that practice appalling. holder said they are prepared to use all the powers that he has to make the department change. the u.s. labor department's jobs report out today was

better than expected. the nationwide unemployment rate fell to 5.5% in february. that is the lowest its been since the middle of 2008. the labor department reported a gain of 295,000 jobs last month. but wages are still lagging behind. they are up just .1%. that strong jobs report fueled expectations of interest rate hikes and caused a sell out on wall street. the nasdaq and s & p500 saw steep declines. it was just monday when a nasdaq closed above 5,000 and the dow and sm preponderance -- s & p had record highs. and apple is going to join the dow. apple is the world's most valuable company. it will replace at&t. the company's included in the dow change over time to better reflect the current state of corporate america. the warriors are back home

a bay area customer of an insurance company found an unexpected benefit to his low tech tracking system. the device is expected to calculate insurance costs. but this system same helped track a stolen car. >> reporter: we first showed you metro mile. you simply connect this device and pay for your car insurance

based on the actual miles you drive. it monitors not only mileage but the location of the car. ryan hardigan learned of an unexpected benefit two days ago. >> wake up and the partner goes outside to go to work. he came back inside and said the car is gone. >> reporter: so hardigan opened up the app and looked for his location. he gave sfpd the location of the car. but soon the car started moving around making it hard for the police to find. so hardigan called metro mile and got hooked up with alex bozman who got connected to the system. >> i got realtime access. >> she kept sending that information to the police. >> i watched them zigzag around and noticed they had stopped

for a while. >> the the cop pulled into the dead end street and they found our car with the two suspects inside. and that car was parked next to another car that was stolen. >> reporter: after arresting those two suspects, the police called the other owner to pick up her stolen car as well. >> the officers were cheering, alex was cheering. we were all high fives and back patting. it was an exciting moment. >> great to know that we had cracked something even bigger than this one stolen car. >> reporter: after police removed the suspects and all of their drug paraphernalia, both victims were able to get their cars back fortunately unharmed. tom vacar, ktvu news. once again another round of plenty of sunshine out there and those warm temperatures back up into the 70s. we'll do it all over into the seven day forecast. then a few changes into the weekend. you see the closest cloud bank is out to the north over 200 miles and here's the next storm. it's not going to be the next
