. a brazen daytime killing. a woman is stabbed to death in the middle of the afternoon in downtown oakland. >> it's kind of scary. it really is. it's scary. >> reporter: good evening. >> the stabbing happened at 23rd street and webster around 4:00 this afternoon. that's just blocks from lake merit in downtown oakland. there is indication of where the victim was going. >> reporter: we're on webster street and this is the back side of the ymca building. it was here people saw someone collapsed on the pavement and called 911.

the alameda county coroner arriving just a block off broadway in uptown oakland. a commercial area where at 4:00 in the afternoon a woman was found on the sidewalk. >> she has gym attire. >> reporter: the homicide investigator says the middle aged woman stabbed to death was wearing workout clothes but didn't have a purse or gym bag. >> we're trying to identify the victim. that's what we're having a hard time doing. >> reporter: the killing happened on the back side of the ymca building but it's unclear if the victim was coming or going. >> have to call this person. >> reporter: the ymca deferred questions. staff and clients walked past the active crime screen. investigators looking for clues. >> it's a pretty nice area. pretty weird to see crime like that here. >> it's a pretty cool area. this ymca is a safe place. >> this is a good neighborhood.

if you go where i'm going now the telegraph is bad. >> are people inside talking about this? >> no. they just want to get their cars. >> reporter: the parking garage and street used by staff and ymca customers was inacsetsable for five hours inside the taped off area. >> not an area -- that this will be a lot of crime in. especially this time of the day. >> reporter: this man arrived a half hour before the statement. >> there was another car right in front of my car that's not there now. but that's -- that's a bit unusual thing. >> reporter: at this point detectives don't know if the woman was alone or with others. >> what i do know is that we'll be exploring every possibility. whether she was the intended target. it's such the early stages of the investigation. yet to determine. >> reporter: surveillance cameras may also provide clues.

the garage has a door out to webster street but the only ymca door is an emergency exit. investigators are still here tonight inside the auto shop where there is a camera and they have the folks coming down here after hours to take a look at what video they may have captured. they're trying to piece together the victim's movements they r -- as they still try to learn who she is. >> thank you. search continues tonight for a suspected child molester who escaped custody yesterday after overpowering a sheriff deputy at the hospital. santa clara sheriffs say that johnell carter should be considered armed and dangerous. carter was last seen running from santa clara valley medical center toward moore park avenue yesterday afternoon. he was there for a medical appointment. several hours later a resident

at the nearby sierra crest apartments reported a burglary. and evidence points to carter. a man at the apartment says it was a tense night. >> he could be hiding in a dumpster. empty units. he could have broken in . and been there until sun down. >> reporter: a police source said carter has tied to campbell and he is described as affrenen american, 220 pounds. shaved head. go tee. and the word alice on his neck. hayward police hoping sketches will lead them to the man who tried to pull a 15-year-old girl into his car yesterday on whitman street as the teen walked home. the girl was able to fight back and run to a neighbor's house for help. the suspect is described as a white man in his 20s about 5-7 with a tan complexion. short brown hair. a scruffy beard.

no mustache. 140 pounds . last seen driving a white newer model 4-door sedan with a light blue dealer plate. investigators say the incident is similar to another attempted kidnapping two weeks ago in hayward. a 14-year-old girl in that case was also able to escape. today marks 50 years since once of the most violent crashes of the civil rights rera. bloody sunday in alabama. it was on this day that troopers used force to turn back civil rights marchers. among them who suffered a fracture to his skull is john lewis. thimages shocked the nation. as jonathan reports, today president obama and thousands of others gathered at the bridge to look at racial equality in the u.s.. >> reporter: speaking at the bridge in selma alabama president obama called on americans to carry forward with the spirit of the civil rights movement.

>> if we want to honor their courage, then all of us are called to possess their moral imagination. all of us will need to feel as they did the fierce urgency of now. >> reporter: hundreds of protesters marched from selma headed to the state capital in an effort to end sdriminateary voting practices. marchers faced beatings and tear gas from state and local police. students thanked those protesters for their strength. >> because of what you did we have choices and education. ♪ you are ♪ ♪ . >> reporter: thousands of people including some who participated in the march are in selma to commemorate the historic day. >> we come to selma to be renewed. we come to be inspired. >> reporter: descendants say the movement is far from over and everyone has their own bridge. >> don't just get on the

bridge. don't just cross the bridge. but finish the work. so that their lives will not have been given in vain. >> reporter: in addition to the president about 100 members of congress and former president george w. bush are here to commemorate the events of 50 years ago. and from selma to the bay area marchers walk across another iconic bridge. coming up later at 10:30 bay area activists share their concerns 50 years after the confrontation. a bicyclist suffered critical injuries and has gone through surgery after being struck by a fire truck this morning at the intersection of mason and turk in the tenderloin neighborhood. the fire crew just cleared a call and was returning to the station when the accident happened. the bicyclist is in critical condition.

a wild prest. patrick's day party sobered up quickly today when the garage roof that people were standing on suddenly collapsed. want to show you cell phone video. it caught scenes of the party and the collapse. police say more than 30 people were on the roof when it gave way. nine people were injured. all are expected to recover. police arrested three people on misdemeanor charges. authorities admit they were caught off dad as thousands came to the party. fraternities and sororities are on probation. it is still winter but sure didn't feel like it today. a beautiful saturday. had many people out running and walking and biking in san francisco today. >> you see lots of people in shorts and long -- not long sleeve shirts. that's usually what you see people in san francisco in. lots of people in tank tops. >> reporter: this is the time of year we should be shivering

and trying to dodge the raindrops. today we had ultimate sunshine. temperatures a good -- oh, 10 to 12 degrees above the average. and those readings maxing out in the 70s. take a look at the highs for today. saturday, march 7. you can see the numbers in the 60s for the afternoon readings. everybody warmer than the average for today. santa rosa topped out in the upper 70s. san jose maxing out 76. here's a look at the bay area temperatures. oakland 78 this afternoon. you get the idea across the board. a few changes developing. you can see a fog bank developing in the pacific as forecasted by the models. here's a closer look at a live camera coming up with san francisco. some patchy fog regrouping near parts of the shoreline. it looks like we have -- that coming up for you in a few minutes. but we have patchy fog developing. with that -- that will be a big

factor in the forecast in sunday's weather outlook. we'll have more coming up in a few minutes. library patron possibly infected with measles may have exposed people in berkeley. the person visited the central branch library and west branch library on friday, february 27 with another viz toot the west branch the next day. it's recommended anyone who visited those two libraries last friday and saturday should watch for measle symptoms such as rash during the next two week s. wisconsin police release new details about the shooting death of the young black man including he was unarmed. madison police say the officer was injured in a scuffle with 19-year-old tony robinson when he shot him. it was revealed the officer was once involved in a previous shooting.

madison's police chief expressed condolences. >> i have two adult sons myself. i couldn't begin to try to get my hands around the (inaudible) of the loss. >> my son has never been a violent person. never. and to die on such a violent way is -- baffles me. >> reporter: robinson's mother said in a statement she has not been allowed to see the body. ferguson, missouri, police will meet with the u.s. justice department about possible reforms in the wake of a threat by attorney general eric holder to dismantle the police department. not pressing charges against the officer who shot michael brown. the doj this week found rampant racial bias. a pattern of discrimination. and a toxic environment among ferguson police. a day of rememberance in selma and those who lived through the civil rights era

. a celebration in san afternoon tonight seen here on ktvu. the chinese new years parade celebrated the year of the ram. hundred oz thousand of people lined the san francisco streets. cara was following some of the 90 attractions. >> reporter: it was a colorful and festive celebration to ring in the lunar new year. dragon dancers wowed the crowd as they snaked through union square. >> seen dragons and i like dragons. >> reporter: the fire crackers, the colorful floats, the chinese dance troops is all part of the san francisco tradition and today's weather made the trek to see the parade in person.

>> i can actually see. it's great. exciting. >> reporter: the southwest airlines chinese new year parade is the largest celebration outside of asia. the crowd and hundreds of thousands reporting to city leaders. >> the weather is perfect. i think people are having great fun. it's all about prosperity, sharing, kindness, artistry. all of that is reflected in the spring. such a feel good thing. such a great town with everybody from all over the place. all over the world. >> new year is a special one. we celebrate every year with family. the way we celebrate is food and food is good. >> reporter: many of the parades young participants study it in the year. >> we focus on chinese culture all year long. this is an opportunity for them to come out and share that with the entire city of san francisco. >> and wish for everybody a very happy new year. >> reporter: and of course a

fessional pilot. and if anything happened in this -- tragedy he would have been the hero of the event. >> reporter: malaysian authorities say all passengers are presumed dead. the aircraft is believed to bezuin the southern indian ocean. a young woman who devoted her life to helping others was remembered today. hundreds came out to say good-bye to aid worker kayla mueller. in her hometown of prescott, arizona. she died as a hostage of isis. mueller was killed in a jor danian air strike, but the u.s. rejects that claim. she worked as an aid worker in israel, india, and france before heading to syria where she was captured. mueller was held for 18 months by islamic state militants.

allegiance. the leaders claim they're establishing a caliphate. it is believed to be authentic by a group that monitors the group. hours before the audio was released, four suicide bombers attached a fish market and three other locations in the northern nigerian city. at least 54 people were killed. eyewitnesses claim two of the bombers were women. boko haram did not comment on the attacks. the world health organization today began large scale testing of an experimental vaccine in guinea. health officials want to see how effective it might be in preventing future outbreaks. sierra leone libeeria, and guinea have been the hardest hit. the health agency is hoping to use the vaccination campaign to create a buffer zone. the disease left more than 9800 people dead.

mexico has banned animals from the circus. a nationwide ban takes effect in july. some mexican states are starting enforce it now. the owner of a chinese circus says he has not heard what will happen to the animals. animal rights activists have been tracking them for cases of abuse. and animal rights activists praising ringling brothers to stop using elephants but say the retirement should happen right away. the circus said public attitudes have changed and activists note the success of cirque du soleil shows you don't need animals for a profitable circus. a bride to be came out in force today. the brides against breast cancer nationwide tour stopped today at the hilton garden inn and hundreds of brand name gently used gowns were on

sale up to 85%. all of the proceeds will support cancer programs for patients and families. >> we had over 150 people show up today for our vip and general admission. so we are still kicking around here. and it's been a fantastic show. we're on our way to raising $10,000 today. >> reporter: the tour of gowns is part of a 120 city tour. keeping kids active to keep them off the streets. the big name special guest they faced off against today in a game of football. there were grilled sausages and bouncy houses but this gathering was about something bigger than that. why the a's partner with local little league players. and wrapping up a warm saturday out there but changes off shore. coming up we'll talk more about the fog developing and if we have any rain clouds in the forecast.

. it was opening day at the coliseum today for baseball. not for the a's. but for hundreds of other young players. (cheering and applause) about 1400 young baseball players representing 130 different teams gathered at the coliseum parking lot this afternoon. it's opening day for north ocland and south oakland little league or what they call knoll soul. >> knoll soul has been around for 30 years. so we have been doing this a long time. this is our first time at the oakland coliseum. got a great relationship with the a's. came together quickly and we were able to make it work with the volunteers. >> reporter: one reason the a's joined is because knoll soul says 3% of oakland youth play little league. that's something parents and coaches would like to change. >> baseball is teaching the kids all about team sports and sportsmanship and how to be

really good people. >> we have two kids. a young kid who is playing t-ball and on older kid playing in double a competitive league. >> reporter: little giants and little a's got to strut their stuff in the coliseum parking lot. mascots helped parents and coaches get around the players. and plenty of grilled sausages and other treats to keep players motivated. >> everybody get your hands together. >> it's a fun event. the kids -- identify with their teammates and get to go play in the bouncy houses. >> reporter: and that's exactly what they did as the kids piled into the bouncy houses to work off the excess energy. knoll soul hopes to have the kids on the grassy infield inside the coliseum for next year'sopebening day celebration. >> kids in san francisco today teamed up with pros for a game of flag football.

spencer ware of the kansas city chiefs led the kids in a series of drills. the kids taking on the pros are from the boys and girls club of san francisco club house. >> kind of let them do a little question and answer. build confidence. show them we care. >> they look up to athletes or, you know, our favorite tv star. whoever it may be. and just trying to relate to them. >> reporter: the event was organized by the nonprofit organization be human. led by a san francisco police officer and his brother. the organization aims to get kids involved in sports and keep them off the streets. also teached at risk youth from rival nashgdz how to get along. it is that time of year when high school girls start dreaming of prom. the special project to make sure everyone can look their best. >> a lot of what happened

>> it's 50 years of people being beaten and -- for equal rights of justice. >> reporter: many of those marching today remember a march across the bridge 50 years ago in selma where protesters were brutally beaten by state troopers. >> selma is in my heart. a lot of what happened before selma and after selma really made a difference in my life. >> reporter: she remembers racial injustice before the civil rights movement. >> i lived in cincinnati and went to a school where blacks had to swim last in the swimming pool. >> reporter: she says bloody sunday was a pivotal moment. >> by the time i graduated and went to university they were giving scholarships away as a result of selma. >> reporter: marchers say many of the same issues are still confronting americans so they're still marching. >> we're at a cross roads. are things going to go back to selma to the lynching rope? they had

troopers and dogs back then. now they have the police shooting people down. >> reporter: organizers say the struggle is far from over and that's why they're calling for national day of protest april 14 asking people to stay home from school and work and calling it no business as usual. this is not something you see every day at a shopping center in pleasant hill. someone drove into a fire hydrant at the cross roads shopping center. crews were able to turn off the hydrant without any problem and the good news is no one was hurt. a woman died this afternoon as she -- after she was struck by a car around 2:20 in oakland. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver of the other car was nor where to be

found. police are not releasing any information. the woman's identity is not released. one person killed and another injured in a double shooting in san jose. in the 200 block of oak street. when officers arrived they found two adult victims. each shot at least once. both were rushed to the hospital where one was pronounced dead. the second victim is expected to survive. no word on suspects or a possible motive. it's the time of year again when girls start dreaming of the prom and of finding the perfect ensemble to wear. hundreds of high school girls searched for a dress today at the princess project in san francisco. a student from hayward was thrilled to find her designer dress. >> i came here to find a dress. a really pretty dress. i succeeded. i'm really happy i found it for free. >> reporter: looks great.
