pam? >> yeah. president obama formally announcing the white house's new program called tech hire. he's speaking right now coming into the national league of cities. let's listen in for a moment. >> something very specific, and that is how can we work together to build a pipeline of tech workers for this? this doesn't just apply to san francisco. this doesn't just apply to boston. it applies across the board in every part of the country. right now, america has more job openings than at any point since 2001. so that's good news. we got a lot of job openings. here's the catch -- over 500,000 of those jobs are technology jobs. a lot of those jobs didn't even exist 10, 20 years ago.
8:44 am
titles like mobile app developer or user face designer. now, we tend to think that all. these tech jobs are in the silicon valley, that companies like google and ebay or maybe in a few spots like austin texas, where you have seen -- you've sun a tech industry -- you've seen a tech industry thrive but the truth is two- third of these jobs are in nonhigh-tech industries like healthcare or manufacturing or banking which means they are in every corner of the country. see, there's no industry that hasn't been touched by this technology revolution. and what's more, a lot of these jobs don't require a four-year degree in computer science. they don't require you be an engineer. folks can get the skills they need for these jobs in newer,
8:45 am
streamlined, faster training programs. what's more, these tech jobs pay 50% more than the average private sector wage, which means they are a ticket into the middle class. and you all know better than anybody, this is an economic development issue because when companies have job openings they cannot fill, that costs them money. it costs them market share. it cost them exports. so they go look for where they can find the people they need. and if we don't have them, that makes it harder for us to keep and attract good jobs to the shores or to your communities. >> we're listening in live to president obama who is talking about his new program called tech hire. he just touched on the fact that we're losing a lot of jobs to foreigners who are better trained. this new program is designed to make sure americans are trained

for the thousands of jobs, the president said are open right now in technology but as the president mentioned, they are not just in the tech sector. they are not just in silicon valley. he did mention that we do have the bulk of the huge technology companies here. however, as the president mentioned, there are technology jobs in retailing, banking, every kind of business requires some people with some sort of i.t. training. also talked about it doesn't necessarily mean a four-year degree. the white house says the average salary that requires information dig is 50% higher than the average private sector american jobs. president has received commitments from more than 300 employers. they do include the big names here in silicon valley, cisco systems, linked-in, verizon, goldman sachs, google, facebook will all be called in to help prepare college students. but he's also calling them in to prepare and train people
