the 49ers number 49, bruce miller is facing legal trouble after santa clara police arrested the 27-year-old fullback thursday night, just before midnight at an undisclosed location on suspicion of battery. miller lives in santa clara, and got engaged last fall. >> even though this is a misdemeanor case. the police, because there's a 49er involved are going to take this very seriously. >> reporter: steven clark is a former prosecutor with the santa clara county district attorney office. and notes felony charges come when there are physical injuries. >> this probably did not involve significant injuries, but it did involve a physical altercation between the couple. >> reporter: miller's arrest comes less than two weeks after this photo of a profanity laden text exchange, apparently with a significant other was posted on his instagram account. clark says if miller was behind

the text, they could hurt his case both criminal and within the league. >> that's why the cell phone information could be vital to the nfl's review of the matter. it's not just was a crime committed for the nfl, it's the nfl conduct policy. it's a much broader investigation. >> reporter: the 49ers release add statement monday afternoon, saying they are aware of miller's arrest adding, we were disappointed to learn of these reports, and will do our due diligence in collecting all relevant information, according to a database of player arrests, miller is the 11th 49er arrested since 2012. one of the highest totals in the league. 49er fans say they weren't surprised to see another player arrested. some saying they don't expect a lot from the players. >> the 49ers were in a tough spot with trying to talk to their public about being, winning with class, playing with class. >> reporter: the santa clara police department says it has handed the case over to the

d.a.'s office. i spoke with prosecutors tonight, and they say they have not yet received the case. if convicted, miller receives up to a year in jail. >> maureen naylor live tonight in santa clara. word of miller's arrest comes as the 49ers deal with big changes to their roster. today two key players left the team, and there could be more changes on the way. one big news story after another, really all off-season long. i'd say probably the fastest fall from grace i've ever seen in bay area sports. for the most part, it's cyclical. teams go through bad times on the field, but for the 49ers they've gone from the super bowl just two years ago to mediocre on the field, and perceived chaos. aside from another the arrest of a player a few days ago, two of the team's dynamic leaders, apparently ready to sign with

here. >> reporter: dave coen heard a powerful blast about 5:00 and called it in. >> uncertainty, as to what is going on. >> reporter: coen lives across the street from this house, where three weeks ago, almost 90 explosive devices and chemicals used to make explosives were found, and removed by a bomb squad. laureen mason went to jail. >> did you know she was out of jail? >> no. >> i didn't think it was going to be an issue again, but two weeks ago, it was pretty crazy. >> reporter: a traffic stop of mason and her boyfriend. a search of the car turned up a backpack full of explosives. by that time, mason was already under suspicion because of explosions neighbors had heard. >> it really shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. i don't know what kind of

person has explosive devices in their house. this is a really nice neighborhood, and it shouldn't be an issue here. >> reporter: neighbors say the house is owned by the suspect's mother, who moved out of state. given what a any search might reveal, neighbors aren't sure how alarmed to be. >> i don't know if these are devices that could just take off a couple of fingers or could actually be fatal. i don't know. >> the devices that were found last time during the course of the search were equivalent to half sticks, quarter sticks of dynamite. are they a threat? absolutely. if those were left out in the street, anywhere in a residential area, anyone of the neighborhood children were to pick it up, we've got a problem. >> reporter: we're learning mason made bail the very same day she was arrested last month, and was free to come home. investigators want to know if new explosives were obtained since then, and if so, why. mason is accused of using

explosionives to threaten, or intimidate in the past. a live picture now, as the uc bomb squad rolls in. it promises to be another long period of waiting for this neighborhood. back to you. >> debora, when you say she was using these explosives, or that people say she was using these explosives to threaten or intimidate, who was she trying to threaten and intimidate, and do we know why? >> we don't know the details on that. we asked a lieutenant for specifics, and he said that's something they're keeping close as part of their investigation. the impression is that it was to intimidate neighbors perhaps in not complaining about her. if that's the case, it finally backfired. >> very quickly, do we know where her daughter is? her 5-year-old daughter? >> her 5-year-old daughter was not on the property tonight when the deputies arrived, and initiated this new enforcement action. she was not here, i'm told that

laureen mason was alone here on the property. one person was killed, and two others were wounded in the east bay today in a drive-by shooting. it happened at about 4:45 this afternoon near the intersection of chestnut, and 28th streets in west oakland. police say a woman in her 20s was pronounced dead at the scene, while a man and a boy were hospitalized. neighbors told us, they heard as many as 20 gunshots. they also say the woman was killed while trying to shield a child from the bullets. a sheriff spokesman tells us that a shootout across the street from highland hospital at about 8:00 tonight was connected to this afternoon's shooting in west oakland. nobody was hit. the sheriff's office says a car connected to both shootings sped away from the scene, but deputies caught up to it, and detained several people inside. and across the bay, san francisco police are looking for two suspects, following a double killing that happened at a parking lot next to playground this morning in the excelsior district. the two men were shot to death

about 9:30 this morning, as they were sitting in a parked car, at crocker amazon park. police responded to calls from park workers and found one man dead in a car. the other was profoundationed dead at the hospital. both were in their 20s. distraught relatives and friends rushed to the scene and spoke with officers. police are trying to determine the motive, and into the shootings were gang related. >> our gang task force will always take a look at it to see if it is gang related or not, or if it is gang motivated. >> police have only described the suspects as two males. they're hoping that witnesses will step forward to help them find the shooters. a hefty donation is on its way to the san francisco recreation and park department. building materials company, sam x is donating 20 tons of sand. it will replace the sand that had to be removed of a someone smashed dozens much bottles in the sand box at the park,

president obama, eyeing the bay area to hire more tech workers. the president announced a new tech initiative to hire american youth and disadvantaged workers to get new jobs. >> a look at which bay area companies were mentioned as models by the white house. >> reporter: julie, let me name them, zen deck, auto desk, those were named by the white house initiative as partners, many community groups say there are a lot of young people who will benefit. many of those people who don't even have a computer. the bay area has an abundance of tech jobs, but it's a excessive field, and for low income youth, laiding a high

paying job isn't easy. today, president obama said his new tech hiring initiative will help create a pathway. >> when these jobs go unfilled, it's a missed opportunity for the workers, but it's also a missed opportunity for your city, your community, your county, your state, and our nation. >> reporter: the president says there are more than a half million jobs in information technology, and thousands more in healthcare and other fields that need skilled workers. burton wants to be one of those workers. the 23-year-old from the bay view is in san francisco's tech sf program, and growing up, he never had his computer. >> i'm pretty sure, you go through these doors, and most of them never had a computer. >> reporter: he's learning computer skills and hoping to get a job when he graduates next semester. >> the young people we get to work with are coming from very low income households. they don't grow up with the technology that's actually

living assistance facility. they are accused of abandoning 14 residents for several days. that's after an order to shut down the home for code violations. the only people who remained were a janitor, and cook who worked without pay until the residents were paid. they could face 17 years in prison if convicted. tonight, there is still no sign of that child molestation suspect who escaped from custody in san jose last friday. he's accused of molesting a 9- year-old girl. ktvu's azenith smith tells us how that little girl is being protected by a group of bikers. >> reporter: they call it its top priority. all hands on deck to find janelle carter. he escaped friday after overpowering a deputy, and injurying his shoulder during a physical therapy appointment. deputies have blasted the 43- year-old's picture on fugitive watch. alerted state authorities to be on the lookout, and formed a multitask force over the

weekend. >> it's from surveillance, to following up on any leads and tips that we get. so that's why we developed this task force, and just communication with other agencies. >> reporter: carter was arrested back in march of last year. he's accused of inappropriate sexual encountered with a 9- year-old relative. the molestation happening over the course of the year. the 5th grader told her biological mother who notified authorities. >> it's just like a quick reaction. it was like, he's on tv, i didn't really, you know, it caught me by surprise. >> reporter: jessica dorsey lives next door to the alleged victim's family in campbell, and tells me, she's shocked he escaped. this group shows bikers against child abuse. while ktvu was in the girl's neighborhood, members of the local chapter were outside her home. the members ask we predict their identity, but tell us,

california has been called off within the past hour. law enforcement officers were looking for 37-year-old geovany santiago enriqeez and his 1- year-old son. the baby has been found in mexico and his father is under arrest. there is no word on the baby's condition. the federal government may move the very popular alcatraz ferry to fort mason. >> that has outraged some people in the marina district. >> reporter: for visitors coming to san francisco, alcatraz is almost always on the bucket list. >> absolutely. that and the bridge. >> you can see why.

atkins says his requests went nowhere. >> so i said, can i simply take a look. can i simply see either the photos or the shoes, and i wasn't allowed to. >> reporter: the sheriff said today that his office cooperated with other law enforcement, despite the sworn statements of two veteran investigators to the contrary. the federal motion is connected to a civil case brought by one of the victim's family against the sheriff's department. it requested all documents be made available. >> ken pritchett in our newsroom tonight. a head-on crash killed two people today in a rural sonoma county road. it happened on river road, west of santa rosa. authorities say a lexus sedan crossed into oncoming traffic to pass slower traffic, and collided with a ford pickup truck. a dog inside the pickup was also killed. the names of the victims have

not been released. authorities say the driver of the pickup was a 58-year-old man who lived in windsor. a marin county man suspected of killing 84-year- old olga dinelli of penngrove pleaded not guilty. hill was his alleged accomplice. authorities believe silva, and hill ransacked the home on february 26, and left her bound to a chair and shot her to death. it is unclear if silva will be transported back to sonoma county to face charges. a san francisco police officer charged with raping a woman could be facing even nor charges. the preliminary hearing store officer geoffrey graves got underway today. he is charged with one count of raping a girl he met on a police car, and two charges of

a defense attorney for former rap music mogul suge knight says a video shows he is innocent. it appears to be surveillance footage. a man approaches the red truck and is thrown to the pavement as the truck backs away. knight's attorneys say he was being ambushed by gunmen. a short time later, that truck reappears there, running over the man. knight has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him. most of the republicans in the u.s. senate are threatening to do whatever they can to thwart a nuclear agreement with iran. the u.s. and five other countries are trying to reach a

republican state lawmakers and veterans are angry about an incident in southern california involving the american flag and they don't want it to happen again. ktvu fox 2 reporter, cara lou tells us it all started with students at uc irvine, voting to ban flying the american flag. >> reporter: at college campuses across america, the american flag flies freely. last week on the uc irvine

campus, controversy developed after a counselor banned the use of all flags, including the stars and is stripes in the name of making a more inclusive environment. today, state senator, janet nguyen, alongside veterans and other leaders announced they planned to prohibit from banning the american flag on school property. >> as an immigrant who came to the united states in search of freedom and democracy, i could not stand before you today as a state senator if it were not for the ideals of that american flag. >> i think that university campuses should have the flag on campus, just because, you know, we're in america. >> reporter: here students shared their opinions on the attempt to ban the american flag on a public campus. >> i think any flag should be able to be displayed, as long as it's not offending anyone. >> i think it's important that we have the flag, but we also don't attack the people who are expressing a different opinion.
