on the sidewalk. ktvu's cristina rendon is at police headquarters where we are learning more about the suspect who is under arrest now for murder. >> reporter: yeah. that's right. police arrested the 19-year- old, his name is anthony sims. he was arrested two days ago. he was charged with murder this afternoon and the news conference will start in 15 minutes. friends and family of the victim are mourning her loss. >> reporter: another memorial popped up on the streets. this one for chyemil pierce. this has friends and strangers fed up with the violence. the mother of three was trying to rush two of her children into their house when she was hit by spray bullet. >> it pulled me in and broke me in half. i came out here because we are not going to lose no more mom

-- mamas. >> pop, pop, pop. everybody got down. stay still. came out, thinking it was over, that is when i saw -- they ran off down the street. >> reporter: according to documents police arrested a man named anthony sims two days ago. he told investigators he was involved in a gun battle that led to her death. >> what do you say to her kids when they ask where their mom is? what do you say? did everything for her kids. one thing you can say about it, she was a great mother. >> reporter: this should be a place where mothers shouldn't have to worry about their children. >> after seeing this, it is time to change. >> reporter: so far police have not released anthony sims' mugshot and we are trying to figure out if they have other persons of interest or any other arrests expected to come. >> earlier this week i talked

to folks and they were saying they didn't want to go on camera, they were nervous about retaliation, they were scared but today we are seeing people talk, did they say why they wanted to go on camera today? >> the message i got was that they do just want this violence to end. it is something they see on a daily basis and now that a couple days passed they are hoping they can spread the message, the violence needs to end and the killings need to stop. >> that press conference in the next 10 minutes or so and we will take it live when it happens. cristina rendon, thank you. a call for calm following the shootings of two police officers in ferguson, missouri. the officers were wounded during a morning rally after the resignation of the police chief. police are still looking for the gunman. >> reporter: a man hunt is underway in ferguson, missouri after an ambush style attack on

two police officers. the officers are lucky to be alive and expected to make a full recovery. >> reporter: demonstrators hit the ground when shots were fired outside the ferguson police department midnight thursday, striking two police officers. >> there was gunfire. we ducked down. we saw the cop was shot. >> reporter: one officer was hit behind the ear. the other was hit in the shoulder. both suffered serious injuries but were treated and released from the hospital. >> this is an ambush, it is what it is. >> reporter: some shootings came after thomas jackson re-- the shootings came after thomas jackson resigned after the department of justice report. ferguson dealt with social unrest after the shooting of michael brown who was killed by a white police officer, darren wilson. while darren wilson was cleared of wrong doing in november, the incident set off protests and

prompted a debate about race. attorney general eric holder called the attack cowardly and pledged a full investigation. >> i condemn these attacks. all of us in the law enforcement family and all americans across the country are praying for the safe recovery of the two officers. >> the shots were fired from a hand gun, 125 yards away at a police line that was protecting a peaceful demonstration at that point. the names of the officers have not been released. the san jose city clerk's office is under fire over a mistake on the ballot for an election next month. it is costing $15,000 to fix and one candidate says this could cost him votes. ktvu's azenith smith is live to explain what happened here. >> reporter: frank, 10 candidates are running in the

race to be a san jose city counsel member. it is a seat left vacant and now it is drawing controversy. >> reporter: 29,000 households in north san jose should have received this. the official ballot for the april 7 election. 10 candidates are vying to represent district 4. next to their names, all have a diamond, it means they agree to limit campaign spending. especially 140,000 spending cap. problem is, that is not accurate. >> one typo. >> reporter: she says a staff member noted that a candidate agreed to the spending cap. he did not. now the office plans to send out brochures alerting of the error. >> reporter: how much is this going to cost taxpayers?

neighbors watched. stunned. >> cars. 5, 10 cars coming in. >> reporter: something actually more serious. police say they had u.s. marshals tracking a suspect. wanted for a murder on august 24 in antioch last year. the 22-year-old suspect whose name isn't being released yet fled in this silver car to this dead end. he ran into the home of a man police describe as an associate. officers followed. >> ran up in the house. he wouldn't come out. had guns drawn. telling the man to come out. surrender. >> reporter: he eventually did give up. police questioned the associate and then appeared to return some of his property and let him go. parents we talked to around here are worried. >> live here, it is great and everything. till now. >> reporter: she didn't want to be identified. >> we got kids around here, you know, we live for our kids. so for this to be happening i

protecting an endangered fish took center stage in the debate about how to demolish part of the old bay bridge. ktvu's tom vacar says some say the bridge isn't the real threat to the fish. tom? >> indeed. this may be the site of a misplaced environmental battle. >> this is the smelt. a fish that grows to 4, 5 inches and wanders over rivers, the san francisco bay, and the ocean. >> used to be the most abundant fish and now they are rare.

a vicious crime this morning. 7 people dragged a man off of muni and robbed him at gun point. ktvu's christien kafton is live in the city where police have important evidence that could lead them to the suspects. >> reporter: the victim in the case picked up the 91 owl that he caught here. what the muggers might not have cared about is that buses like these are equipped with video cameras. >> the incident unfold at 4:00 a.m. the victim said the bus stopped here. >> the victim was physically pushed off the bus by the group of 7 male suspects. once on the street the victim was pushed to the ground.

years ago. >> the wind. the noise. the traffic. the people. it brings me back to that very moment where i nearly jumped. >> reporter: frightening but necessary. >> the more and more i accept who i am and know that is not who i am, it helps me move on. >> reporter: on march 11, 2005 he was a desperate 22-year-old. battling depression for as long as he could remember. he said he had abandonment issues because he was adopted and grappling with being a new father and he just lost his job. he drove to the bridge, walked out and climbed over the railing and then he heard a voice. >> i approached him slowly and asked his permission to speak with him. >> reporter: his job was to patrol the bridge for the california highway patrol said

he didn't do much talking. >> that is what a lot of people need is someone to listen to them. >> reporter: after an hour and a half of listening they spoke of his first born. >> he made me understand i need be here for her. >> with his help he climbed back over the rail but his battle with depression was far from over. >> took me 8 years to confront that was me on the bridge. for 8 years there was no contact between them. but two years ago he reached out to his mother to see how he was doing. i asked why he didn't contact him sooner. >> if i contact them maybe i could trigger something in them to go back to that day. >> reporter: in may, 2013, the two men were reunited in new york city. for the time since the suicide attempt. he was invited to present the

lifesaver's award to him. it was then he said that he finally confronted what happened that day on the bridge. when he saw the photos of himself on the bridge through the eyes of the audience. >> i wanted to hide it. i didn't want to talk about it. the more i talk about it it helped me and it helped people. >> reporter: now the father of three, he found a new job and hopes to marry his fiance. once lost, now a new found sense of peace and happiness. >> i focus on going this way. i don't worry about going back. i worry about forward. >> monday i got the job. my car went out monday. [ laughter ] >> reporter: now able to laugh, bound by faith, the two men talk to each other often. >> we are going to stay friends forever. we are brothers so to speak.
