a big rig driver is dead after his truck slammed into an east bay restaurant. the question now, why did that driver lose control? good afternoon. i'm cristina rendon. tori campbell off is. the fire triggered a huge explosion this morning. sadly, the driver was killed. alex savidge is live with what went wrong before the crash. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. police suspect this truck was having mechanical problems of some kind, likely with the brakes. it came barreling down railroad

avenue this morning, hitting several other cars before plowing right into this mexican restaurant there. you can see the damage that was done. that big rig, entirely inside of that restaurant. it's a dirt and gravel hauler. this is the mexican restaurant which was destroyed in the crash. thankfully, the restaurant was closed at the time. it's closed on mondays every week. the driver of the truck was killed. amazingly, no one else was hurt. this happened around 8:30. this crash triggered explosions and a huge fire. the restaurant destroyed. a neighboring business also damaged as well. the out-of-control rig crashed into a number of other cars before hitting the unra. those other drivers describe a real surreal scene. >> you could feel the explosion. i was so close right -- i was just right over here. i just -- i feel sad for the driver. >> it was like a hollywood set.

it completely exploded. there was plumes the fire and there was multiple explosions after that. i called 911, kind of like my new birthday because -- i really could have died today. >> reporter: a number of witnesses out here this morning told us it was clear the truck's brakes had failed as it was coming down the incline on railroad avenue. they could hear the truck trying to downshift or -- or hear the driver trying to downshift using the engine and also could smell the brakes as well as that driver tried to bring that big rig to a stop. police say as the driver was coming down railroad avenue before crashing into the restaurant, the driver was flashing the headlights on the truck, trying to warn other people in front of him that they were having some issues with the truck. the driver has not been identified. the body still inside the cab of that truck. a lot of work here for firefighters and police officers to do to remove that

body here. the driver of the truck not identified. we've not found out the company that this big rig blocks to. >> questions we plan on answering tonight. thank you. breaking news in oakland. we're getting word of more arrests in the shooting deaths of a mother of three. shelton mcdaniels and jerry harbin both 29 face murder charges. kiechelle wright, also 29 was arrested as an accessory. last monday, chyemil pierece had just picked up her two children from school when she was caught in a gun battle. she was struck in the head and killed. anthony sims already faces murder an gun charges. vallejo police say two young may have been targeted in a deadly overnight shooting. it happened around 1:350 this morning while the two -- 12:30 this morning while the two men were sitting in a pontiac near kentucky and napa streets. someone came up and opened fire into the car. at least a dozen shots were fired. the driver was killed and the

second victim is critically injured. a motive for the shooting is not yet known. no arrests have been made. the investigation into a deadly shooting involving four police officers in napa counties this noontime. investigators say 41-year-old james richard jimenez was shot on friday as police officers prepared to serve a search warrant. police say he was shot when he tried to escape from police while on a motorcycle whale reportedly reaching for a gun. the four officers have been placed on leave. both the napa county sheriff's department and the internal affairs unit are investigating. the caldecott tunnel reopened less than an hour ago after multiple collisions and a car fire closed it this morning. engineers ned the tunnel -- inspected the tunnel for fire damage and gave the all clear. katie utehs describes the chaotic scene from this morning. >> reporter: confusion in the caldecott tunnel. >> we heard a loud bang. everyone got back in their cars to make sure there wasn't, like

an explosion or anything. >> reporter: as smoke filled the first bore, it choked traffic to a standstill. charred cars and abandoned vehicles. >> we seen people get out of their cars and run. we thought that was a good idea. >> reporter: and then a better picture emerged of two separate collisions. the first around 6:20, when a driver crashed into a stalled car. >> as we entered the tunnel, started to move that vehicle, another crash happened, west of our location. >> reporter: the cars at the second crash scene burst into flames. >> it looked like the flames were six feet tall. >> reporter: oakland firefighters put on the the flames around 7:30 -- put on the the flames around 7:30 -- put out the flames around 7:30. >> it was definitely a surprise. we didn't seep -- didn't see this coming. >> reporter: everyone escaped

unharmed. ray mcdonald is fighting back against a women accusing him of sexual assault. he's filing a lawsuit against him alleging she's disfamed the football player and darn-- tarnished his reputation. in the lawsuit, mcdonald says the sex was consensual and the women stayed the next day to go to the store with him to buy alcohol. the district attorney's office is still determining whether to charge him with any crime. an hbo documentary seems to be the catalyst for a wealthy man accused of murder. 71-year-old real estate heir robert durst appeared in shackles in court in new orleans today. he will be extradited to face

murder charges in the death of susan berman. she was found shot to death as she was about to be questioned about the disappearance of durst's life. in the last episode of "the jinx" he can be heard off camera saying, what did i do? killed them all, of course. >> i'm not surprised because i felt felt like he was responsible for these three deaths but to hear him actually say it out loud, was shock. >> durst's attorney says he's innocent. in 2003, he admitted to killing and dismembering a neighbor in texas but claims it was self- defense and was acquitted. police arrested a man in ferguson, missouri in the shooting of two police officers. physical found shell casings at his home that match the gun.

here's more. >> reporter: angry protests continue in the streets of ferguson. this after the arrest of jeffrey williams. the 20-year-old is facing charges of first-degree assault, firing a weapon from a vehicle and armed criminal action. after two police officers were shot in a demonstration in missouri last week. >> there was a weapon recovered which had been tied to the shell casings that were recovered there. weapon recovered from him and he has acknowledged his participation in firing the shots. >> reporter: in response to the arrest, attorney general air irk holder released a statement -- eric holder released a statement. bishop derrick rob beson, who spoke -- robinson who spoke to the said he was not aiming for police. >> he wasn't trying to create disruption in the community. that was not his aim. that was not -- that was not his purpose. he said a protester was trying

roads of the eastern bay bridge. the chronicle reports the cracks were found at the top and the bottom of the rod that secures the base of the main tower. money is an issue. nearly all of the money set aside for testing the rods this year is gone. caltrans officials are now looking to cut costs elsewhere to fund additional testing. a new lower speed limit may be coming for a popular trail in marin after some accidents between bicyclists and hikers. the board of supervisors is set to vote tomorrow on reducing the speed limit on the mill valley sausalito pathway to 10 miles an hour. right now it's 15 miles per hour for bockists. pedestrians say they've had their fair share of close calls. >> the bikers come speeding by on their, you know -- their cycles. they are coming fast. it's worth it. it will prevent some injuries. if approved, the speed

four veteran san francisco police officers are in danger of losing their jobs because they are linked to racist and homophobic text messages. the texts were discovered in a court filing involving a former police sergeant recently convicted of corruption charges. the officers have been reassigned to jobs that don't directly deal with the public. over the weekend, police chief greg suhr also said he wants to terminate their positions. there are new developments in the mysterious killing of an albany dental student. police are examining evidence found in a trash bin found miles from the scene. a richmond woman found a purse belonging to the woman and

bloody clothes. investigators say it's possible the clothing belongs to carr's killer. she was found shot in the head one time in her apartment. a motive for the shoot something not known. today marks ten years since a judge sentenced scott peterson to death since he was convicted of killing laci peterson and their unborn child, connor. >> he sat down with ted rolands at the time and was adamant he had nothing to do with his wife's disappearance. at one point he was asked about the nursery he and laci prepared for their son. >> that door is closed. i can't -- i can't enter that door. >> what sort of preparations did you do? >> the furniture is there, it's painted. it's ready. all of the little itty-bitty clothes and wonderful things we

have. >> when the case went to trial, prosecutors pointed out that peterson had used the nursery for surgery piling chairs and linens in the room. he remains behind bars in san quentin. his appeal process is underway. a local world war ii veteran is on his way to attend the 70th anniversary commember rigs of the battle of eweee -- iwo jima. marines lined up for marin private dewey dobson and his wife sheila. dobson was 18 years old back in 1945 when the u.s. landed and essentially captured the island from the japanese. he was wounded in the first wave of the invasion. >> after i was wounded, i jumped under a big shell hole. mortars kept coming. i was praying they wouldn't come in the hole with me because i had explosives with me. >> a huge sendoff including uso volunteers are seeing private dobson off this morning.

the commemoration takes place in japan on saturday. and now we've seen some cloudy skies in the north bay. some rain, too. now we see what rosemary has to say. >> we're partly sunny. we're wild. we do have the possibility of a few scattered showers falling over the north bay throughout the afternoon. in fact, it could get down all the way to about the golden gate bridge. let's step outside. take a look at what's happening across the bay. partly sunny conditions. temperatures a little bit cooler than where we were over the weekend. broke records on saturday. that was definitely the warmest day. for today, a lot of 60s, a few low 70s. stormtracker2, a moist flow is moving in. shifting it closer. we have a stalled front right over the north bay. there it is there. we may even have a few scattered showers falling in areas like petaluma, santa rosa cloverdale. we will continue with this for today. it will shift just a little bit as we get into the afternoon.

so we may have a few showers in and around san rafael. maybe down to about san francisco. but if you watch the future cast model, we don't have a whole lot if any. most of us are going to remain dry. stopping it here right about sunset. we have a little bit picked over parts of the north bay. but all of this moist air in possibility will leave the possibility at a spotty shower or two. we have the rain to the north, sliding farther as we move into the afternoon. highs in the 60s and 70s. spotty showers, cloudy. temperatures on the mild side. temperatures right now, 66 degrees in concord. 64 in oakland. low 60s in novato. 64 in san francisco. a lot of 60s along the peninsula. 65 redwood city city. half moon bay checking in at 64 and san jose you also are looking at 64 for your lunch hour into the afternoon, temperatures will range from the upper 60s to the low 70s. san francisco expected to go to 69. 72 for oakland. the inner east bay, more of the

same. 2 for you antioch, shifting along parts of the south bay. temperatures will range from 7 in san jose to 73 los gatos. mid-70s expected in santa cruz. temperatures will remain on the mild side as we get into the extended forecast here, taking you day by day. cloudy skies for today. possibility of a few showers. partly cloudy skies tuesday. the ridge of high pressure begins to build back in. wednesday, thursday, numbers are moving back upward. we have temperatures in the low to mid- to upper 70s on friday when spring arrives. with your bay area weekend always in view, turning cooler, cloudier for the weekend, maybe even the possibility of a shower or two. but right now, it doesn't look like much. >> doesn't even feel like we're in winter. >> last week of winter. not going to feel like it. >> thank you. >> you are welcome. ski and snowboarding season is over official little at sierra at tahoe. they are closed for the season as of today.

the resort is usually popular with skiers and boarders because it's one of the closest on highway 50 at twin bridges. but sierra managers say snow conditions are not good enough to stay open. they do add if there is a big storm that brings adequate snow they will reopen. donner ranch off 80 closed for the year last month. it's a whole different story on the east coast. the city of boston is making history this morning for having the snowiest winter ever. snowfall last night officially pushed the totals to almost 109 inches. the old record is below 108 set in 1995. after getting the news, boston marry tweeted super bowl's world series stanley cup and snowfall records. we're truly a title city. there will be no parade. well, there's big changes on the way for south bay commuters who use vta. also ahead, a family is thankful to be alive

as of today, that vta station is officially shut down. the valley transit authority plans to trear down the station to make way for a second set of tracks between the transit center and the whisman station. when finished, they are expected to provide petter service to caltrain and events to levi stadium. it'ses are expected to boost service to the milpitas station. a pennsylvania family is thankful to be alive after a near-miss when a man driving a pickup truck slammed into their home but not them. brad tells us just how close the driver came to creating a deadly situation. >> just gotta be thankful for every day. >> you wouldn't think michael was feeling thankful with the family forced to move out of their home just hours after this, a pickup truck slammed through it around 1:00 a.m. but thankful he is.

the tracks show the pickup actually cut through the yard across the street, then into their card just missing the gas meter. a one in a million kind of crash, not according to a neighbor. he said one time it happened five years ago. >> it's a fast street to come through, you know, someone is maybe drinking or not paying attention. all of a sudden, they hit the brakes. >> it's believed the driver may have been drinking and was taken into custody but did not appear seriously hurt. for all of these reasons, michael is thankful. >> we're still alive. it's a good day. we're following the breaking news we told you about at the top of this newscast, three more arrests in the shooting death of a young mother in oakland. we're working to learn more about the suspects and how police say they are involved in chyemil pierece's death. that story tonight at 5:00. thank you so much for making ktvu your choice for news. remember, we are always here
