inland, 60s and 70s. here is the traffic update with sal. >> good morning to you. we are looking at a commute we are where traffic is doing pretty well although it is slow and crowded. westbound 92 is a little bit slow there. about a 20 to 25-minute delay before you make it on to the bridge. the bridge itself does look good getting into san francisco. a little bit lighter in some areas today. northbound 101, san jose, some slow traffic. 85 and 280, you will notice it is much slower than normal we are following breaking news out of the north bay right there. there is an active police search happening north of petaluma. it is reportedly happening in the area of a 7-eleven store on old red road highway in penn grove north of down ton petaluma. police have not released many details but there is a crime scene set up at that 7-eleven

store and petaluma police and sonoma sheriff deputies have been seeing searching the roads nearby. a police helicopter has been seen flying across the area. this is all possibly connected to a shooting. there may be a second crime scene at nearby petaluma hospital. we have a crew on the way to the scene and we'll bring you more information as we head into the ktvu newsroom. word from palo alto that later today, we may find out the names of the two men involved in a murder-suicide after their families are notified. detectives say that a gunman walked into senior housing complex and targeting the victim. janin thatjanin de la vega is

live. >> reporter: they are waiting for the coroner to identify these men. both live in this apartment complex near middlefield and charleston avenue. an officer is inside guarding the crime scene. police say gunshots were fired at the apt complex which is housing for low income seniors but no one reported hearing the gunshots. instead, this came in as a medical call a resident saw a man injured in an elevator. palo alto firefighters arrived and found the man dead with a handgun in his lap. police arrived and found the body of a second man who had been shot multiple times. police determined that the man in the elevator shot the man in the office and turned the gun on him. >> this is very unusual in palo alto. we don't see this in any basis.

this is tragic. >> reporter: officers say they have not responded to any prior incident at this complex, nor are they familiar with the two men involved. we know one man was in his 60s and the other in his 70s. detectives want to know what the relationship was between them. we're going to through computer files to figure out what led up to this. at this point, though, they believe that this is an isolated incident. >> thank you. it is 7:07. news this morning that one person was hurt in a fire in san francisco's excelsior district. they got the fire under control, within 20 minutes, one person was taken to the hospital but we don't know the extent of their injuries. the red cross was called to help two people who were displaced. the cause is still under investigation time now is 7:06. a judge will hear a motion on

whether to kick a violent sexual predator out of a walnut creek neighborhood. he was convicted of violent assaults against children 12 years ago. the decision to put him there was made by a judge in san francisco without any prior notice to the contra costa d.a.'s office. the city of richmond searching for new ways to keep thieves and vandals out of abandoned homes and also reduce blight. now, one idea is an accident that looks like a window but in this case, that material is virtually indestructible >> it's called secure view. an alternative to putting up plywood at at abandoned houses

violations. monday, a big rig slammed into a closed restaurant on railroad avenue in pittsburg and burst into flames. the driver was killed. the company had so many violations that the c hp was closely watching it every 120 days instead of every two years. the violations include overloaded truck, faulty steering and faulty brakes. authorities are trying to determine the cause of death for a san wane continue death row inmate. 54-year-old leon chawnsy cooper dade at the hospital, awaiting execution for the 1998 rape and murder of his stepdaughter. cooper is the second death row inmate to die in a week and 66th to die from natural causes

since california reinstated capital punishment. and california engineering contractors had the lowest bid, about 69 1/2 million dollars and that is much less than the $93 million caltrain estimated for the work. the company plans to save money by lowering large pieces of the bridge on to barges and then scrapping them elsewhere. the work is expected to take three years to complete. b.a.r.t. apparently not pleased with a specialty beer out of truckey. the brewery wants to trademark the name, b.a.r.t., as it extend production. the bay area transit filed a legal opposition saying that it would dilute the name. b.a.r.t. beer is named after a beloved dog and also fans for barrel aged really tasty.

the beer make has not decide howd to respond we have anone date from san mateo deputies about the latest mountain lion sighting. three farm animals have been killed by a mountain lion. a witness also said that they saw a big mountain lion in that same general area. students at freedom high school in oakley may have been exposed to whooping cough. a letter was sent to parents alerting them to the danger. whooping cough ace generally spread through the air when an ill person is coughing or sneezing. it is a serious illness that can cause severe choke, coughing and vomiting. the school issued a similar alert last september. it is 7:11. her son has been charged in a deadly oakland shooting. coming up, what she's now saying to the family of the

after he posted threats on line targeting a sheriff deputy. it appeared to be related to a ticket. he posted the picture of the ticket online and of the deputy who gave it to him. the social media post got more mom us in from there. some who saw the post notified authorities. one post mentioned planting a bomb on the deputy's squad car. >> turned out that there were a variety of threat, very specific threats involving wanting to kill the deputy, wanting to hurt deputies in generallings blowing people up. >> the san mateo county sheriff department served a search warrant in broncio's home and took him in custody. an openly gay san francisco police officer accused of exchanging homophobic and racist slurs with other

officers has resigned. he was one of four officers reassigned because of the scandal. his lawyer called robeson's resignation a tough decision. he was very proud of the work he did, he said, but it's hard to see a successful career after a scandal like this. the judge has given the go- ahead against san francisco police chief. the suit can move forward, filed bickely o'hare, a former attorney for the department. she claims that she was wrongfully fired after he became chief. she says that the firing was retaliation for a disciplinary action that he filed against him. it's 7:15. let's get you moving. sal, things are moving pretty good on the bridges out there?

>> they are, dave, tory, good morning. friday morning. i should qualify that with the commute that is going to be just a little bit better on friday as we look at highway 4. you can see traffic is still slow, as you come in from pittsburg over bay point and over to concord. when you get to the concord area, southbound 680 traffic will be moving along relatively well as you drive from the venetia bridge. the commute continues to look good all the way to walnut creek, slowing on woodland hills. the only traffic that you will see is on the bridge, toll plaza. 580, this is friday light. usually, we have a lot of traffic through livermore and dublin. i'm looking what i'm seeing here. let's go to the toll plaza. that spider that we see on the camera will hang out for a little while. this is his home.

italian car maker fiat has new commercial. the whole thing was made right here in the bay area but not where you might expect. take a look. may seem a little med trippian but the setting was vallejo along the cord yard. tesla has aid nounsed software upgrade to endthe so- called range anxiety. the software will warn drivers if it goes out of range of the next station and guide them to the next one. it will be able to tell if the charging station is busy or out of service. the upgrade is for tesla's

model s car. >> we'll take a second and talk about pete louima in sonoma county. they are trying to deal with a growing homeless population. the people who work in local centers say it's because of the extremely tight rental market and the lack of affordable housing. some of those who are homeless are also struggling with drug addiction. police say there are about 100 homeless camps in that city and most of them are in environmentally sensitive area near the petaluma river. >> this is where it all ends up, on the water's edge and struggling to find out who can come out and clean it up. >> the police in petaluma are trying to get funding to set up a full-time homeless outreach team to help get people the resources they need. >> 7:26. a fourth bat in the east bay tests positive forrabies. why this discovery is

7:32. let's go back to the desk. >> sal, thank you. dozens of west oakland residents packed a meeting last night, very important meeting. they were questioning police about the rise of crime in their part of the city. >> one of the worth area, dave, is right here between san pablo avenue, west grand and freeway 580 and 680. >> a rolling gun battle started in oakland. >> police say that the two people who were shot were taken to the hospital in serious condition. so far, there is no word of any arrest. >> that shooting happened yesterday while observing plant police were right in the middle of this meeting. some left as the call came in about that shooting and they had to respond. they had to head out. alex savidge is out with the outpouring of anger and frustration at the meeting and

the response from the police chief. >> good morning to you. during that meeting last night, many west oakland neighbors say they would like to see police officers show up sooner when there is trouble. many people feel that a faster police response to a shootout last week in west oakland may have prevented the death of a mother in front of her home. >> she was not doing anything. she was protecting her kids. we are frustrated, just beyond frustrated. >> a whole lot of neighbors say they packed this rec center in west oakland last night and they put the police chief on the hot seat. they are angry over issues of slow response time and also officer turnover in that particular neighborhood. the department is facing a lot of criticism over the killing of shamille pierce. the mother of three was caught in a cross fire. she died as she tried it get her children to safety as

bullets were flying. that shoot jot began with a fight just up the street outside of a home that neighbors say is a real problem known for drugs and violence. on that day, police did get a 911 call about a heated argument at that home but officers didn't respond to the block until gunfire was reported. chief wendt admits there could be some improvement when it comes to response time, but he is pleased with the progress made. >> you know, i'm pretty optimistic about the direction. >> reporter: the chief points out that the department is chronologically understaffed but he is looking at ways to improve response time. the chief said that the department is working with the city to try to shut down known drug houses as fast as possible and with that being said, just yesterday, police were able to clear out the vacant home, tory, that was linked to last

week's gun battle. >> thanks for the update, alex. in the meantime, the family of a man charged in the death of shamille pierce is apologizing to her family. a 19-year-old man was in court but did not enter a plea. sims' mother talked about the tragic killing outside of the courtroom and said she's sorry. >> for our children, i know how she feels. i have grandchildren and everything and children myself. so i apologize on their behalf. >> reporter: police also arrested 29-year-old jerry harbiy and 29-year-old shevlin mcdaniel. they have been charged with murder. we have an update for you on the breaking news we told you about at the top of the hour as we are speaking, an active police search is

happening north of petaluma. it's reportedly happening near a 7-eleven tore store in pet huge ya. police were on another scene in petaluma valley hospital. here is the video of the crime scene at the 7-eleven store. police have not given us many details but we do know poet louima police officers and sonoma county sheriff deputies have also been searching the roads nearby. a police helicopter has also been flying over that area. we have a ktvu crew on the way to the scene. they're going to bring us more information as soon as we can get it into our newsroom. it is 7:37. another bat with rabies has turned up in the east way. the first was discovered last pond month in san leandro.

one in son ma'am these are known as mexican free tail bats. not big or blood thursdayy, about the size of a mouse and feed on insect but rabies is a potentially deadly disease and officials are troubled by the number found. >> last year, we only had two rabid bats for the whole year. >> wildlife experts estimate that about 1% of the pat population has rabies. you should not touch a bat house speaker john boehner plans to go to israel, taking advantage of the tightened and strained relation between the white house and benjamin netanyahu. he will go to israel during the two-week con compressional recess that begins in just ten days. he angered obama administration

officials when he invited benjamin netanyahu to speak before congress this month without consulting with the white house. republicans have criticized the president over the deteriorating relations with israel about a palestinian state and also because of the nuclear talks with iran. with no end in sight to california's drought, governor jeremy brown announce add one billion dollars package to help us deal with another dry year. governor brown along with legislative leaders from both parties announced a drought relief package as winter ends with very little precipitation. >> this is a struggle. it's going to be something that we're going to have to live with for how long, we are not sure. >> now, some of the one billion dollars in drought relief will be used for emergency water supplies and food for the hard hit farming communities. 272 million will be used to improve the quality.

bay. a lot of police out there searching north of petaluma because of a reported shooting. ktvu's fox two tara moriarty just got there in the last 20 minutes. the search died down but still a lot of unanswered questions? why that's right. authorities have not released any details to us just yet but sources tell ktvu there was a crime scene set up here and also at the 7-eleven store which is two and a half miles away. petaluma police officers and sonoma sheriff deputies have been searching the road near the 7-eleven 1 which is near old pembroke highway. a law enforcement helicopter was spotted circling above the store. we are working to confirm reports that this may all be connected to a shooting. we're going to try to get more information from police and let you know what we find out.

senior housing complex a murder- suicide. ktvu fox 2's janine de la vega is live from the scene. >> good morning. police are going that you the complex, a housing complex for low-income seniors. there is an officer inside guarding the crime scene. investigators will be looking through computer files and the office here to try to figure out what left up to this. at around 3:30, yesterday afternoon, a resident caught a glimpse of someone injured in an elevator. firefighters and police found a man with a gun in his lap dead. police arrived to discovered a second body in the office. that man had been shot multiple times. investigators determined that the man in the elevator shot the man who was in the office and then turned the gun on himself. >> we're going to be continuing to look into any possible relationship they had once we

have their identities confirmed to see whether there was some kind of ensuing argument or something that occurred in the past that may have led down what happened. police say they have not responded to any prior incident at the complex nor are they familiar with the two men involved. one man was in his 60s and the other in his 70s. both of them live here. it's unknown if the man that was found lived in the apartment complex. police are still waiting for the coroner to rethese their identities. we have not seen the officers execute the search warrant but we have been told that will happen in the next several hours. at that will help them in their investigation. it is 8:06. in about an hour, a judge will hear a motion on whether to kick a violent sexual predator out of a wall nut creek

neighborhood. contra costa county prosecutors are fighting to evict him because an unusually high number of young boys live in that neighborhood. authorities are trying to determine the cause of dead of a dead row inmate in san quentin. he was awaiting execution for the 1998 rape and murder of his 15-year-old stepdaughter in sacramento county. cooper is the second dead row inmate to die in a week and the 66th to die from natural causes since california reinstated capital punishment in 1978. the city of richmond searching for new ways to keep thieves and vandals from getting into abandoned houses. now, this may be a st. louis. looks like a window but n this case, the material is virtually

middle of this community meeting about the rising violence in the city and also the tragic killing of an innocent mother trying to protect her kids from gunfire. our cameras were rolling. we saw police officers running out to their cars right from that meeting as the call came in. ktvu's alex savidge is now live with more on how people in west oakland were putting pressure on theoakland police chief. >> as you can imagine, there is quite a bit of anger over the shooting death last week of that mother just outside of her home. there is a lot of frustration amongst neighbors about the police response. the issues were front and center during a community meeting held last night. >> every time we call the police, they don't show up until they decide to show up. >> okay, sir, sir -- >> plenty of neighbors packed this rec center for the meeting and they put oakland's police chief on the hot seat. many are upset about issues of slow response time to 911 calls

and also officer turnover in that part of the city. and in particular, the department is facing a lot of criticism over the killing of shamille pearce. the mother of three was caught in the cross fire in front of her home and killed by a stray bullet. she died as she tried to get her children to safety as gunshots rang out. that shootout that ended pearce's life began with a fight up the street. it was just outside of a home that neighbors say ace real problem known for drug and violence. on that day, police did get 911 calls about a heated argument outside of that home but officers didn't respond to the block until gunfire was reported. we asked the chief last night about how he feels that situation was handled. >> the call initially came in as an argument which unfortunately is not an uncommon call for the oakland police department to get. we want to respond as quick as possible to those types of calls but that's all a function of how many officers are

available and how many other calls areoutstanding. >> the chief pointed out that the department is understaffed but he says that they are working right now with the city to try to shut down some those known drug houses in certain neighborhoods, especially in west oakland and try at the gets them closed down as fast as they possibly can. the chief also pointed out that violent crime has gone down in west oakland over the last five years but while he feels things are moving in the right direction, he obviously acknowledged last night that there is a whole lot more work to be done. >> alex savidge live, thank you. in the meantime, the family of a man charged in the death of shamille pearce is apologizing to her family. anthony sims, the 19-year-old defendant was in court. his mother talked about the public killing and said she is

sorry. >> i gave them my condelence and for our children, i know how i feel. i have grandchildren and everything and children myself. so i apologize on their behalf. >> police also arrested 29-year- old jerry harbin and 29-year- old sheldon mcdaniels in the case. they have been charged with murder. the investigation continues. a man suspected of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy in oakland is hyped bars. 48-year-old miguel barajas is held without bail. he was taken into custody on tuesday in fremont. the boy told police that barajas approached him on january 27th as he was walking on 92nd avenue in east oakland around 3:00. that's when barajas lured him to a nearby area, the boy said, and assaulted him. and another bat with rabies turned up in the east bay. the first was discovered last

month in san leandro. two more in fremont and the latest was discovered in sonole on saturday. these bats are known as mexican free tail bats. they are not big or blood thirsty. they are about the size of a mouse and feast on insects but rabies ace potentially deadly disease and health officials say they are troubled by the number of rabid bats found so early in the year. time is 8:37. with no end in sight to california's drought, governor jerry brown announced a one billion dollars package to help us deal with another dry year. governor brown joined by legislative leaders from both parties announced the drought relief package as the drought is ending with little precipitation. >> this is a struggle. that's something that we have to live with for how long, we are not sure. >> now, some of that one billion dollars in drought relief will be used for emergency water supplies and food for the hard hit farming

it ace fund raiser for a wonderful organization called outward bound california providing summertime adventures for low income students and yesterday, some local celebrities and elected officials rappeled down 23 stories. this hotel is on the embarcadero. people who raised $1600 will get a chance to rappel down. oh,ers hope to raise about $300,000. president obama issued a statement on the marin county man being held in iran as that country celebrates its new year holiday. jason roesian has been detained in iran for more than eight months and the president says it is especially painful that on a holiday centered on ridding one self of the difficulty of the past year, jason's mother and father will continue to carry the heavy burden of concern regarding jason's health and well-being into the new year. he is 39 years old, born in san
