details on that developing story. first let's check in with rosemary to see how we are looking on this first full day of spring. >> good morning to you. he with have a cooling -- we have a cooling trend. even a few scattered showers in the forecast. i will detail that for you. concord with a few showers in the overnight. as we start the day a mix of sun and clouds a live look from ktvu. where we have cloudy skies here in our area. the mix of sun and clouds through the morning and then through the afternoon we will be partly cloudy to mostly sunny. storm tracker 2, into your day for today. these are going to pull through. we are not finished with the clouds because we have a few systems moving over northern california. today is going to be about the clouds. it'll be about cooler temperatures for the afternoon. for tomorrow the possibility of scattered showers as we start sunday and then eventually turning in to rain. outside the door right now 46 in napa. we have 51 redwood.

walnut creek in at 52. livermore at 54, as we get into the second half of the day. we will be partly cloudy. perhaps mostly cloudy near the coastline. most of us will see sun. the numbers on your screen will look like 60s over parts of the authority bay a few low 70s for the inland communities and in the south bay. i will put numbers on your screen. 72 this afternoon for livermore and san jose. widespread of 0's -- 60s around the bay. upper 60s in santa rosa, napa, san rafael. tomorrow will be a different day. the possibility of rain coming our way. i will show you when and how much we can expect coming up. >> all right. thank you. we are following developing news in oakland. two people were killed in a fast moving fire overnight. here is a look at the flames when they were spreading from one apartment building to another. what we know about this point is that dozens were forced to evacuate from their homes in the middle of the night.

it's still an active scene out there. allie is at the scene and she is going to have a live report for us in just a minute. new this morning a malfunctioning hot plate is being blamed for an early morning fire. this fire left seven children dead. it happened in brooklyn new york. the children, four boys and three girls range in age from five to 15 years old. all were found in their bedrooms. their mother and teenage sister are in critical condition after they jumped through a window. it's the largest fire tragedy in years. >> a flight from san francisco international landed at the new orleans airport just before a wild machete attack. richard white tried to get past a security checkpoint when a tsa officer asked him for a boarding pass officials say white sprayed wasp spray in the agent's face. he then took out a machete and

swung it at other agents. an armed deputy shot him. >> this guy comes running with a machete over his head swinging it through security and hops a bench and comes toward us and i start swinging my suitcase at him and he ran the other way into a tsa agent. >> reporter: one passenger on the flight said that nobody in the bag claim area knew what happened until they walked out after picking up their bags. white is a taxi driver with minor criminal offenses. he is in the hospital in critical condition. a terror attack in yemen is being felt here. we went to a mosque where a member said he lost a relative in yesterday's attack. it happened at two mosques yesterday during midday prayers. four suicide bombers detonated explosives inside the packed buildings and at the main exit gates. at least 137 people were

killed. more than 300 were hurt. the president of yemen said the bombings were an attempt to drag the country into chaos. bay area residents say they are concerned about the country's growing instability. >> people have to know that it's not like nothing to do with islam. islam and muslims. because -- to kill people they came to the mosque to pray, to kill kids and old people. >> it's a nation with a mostly sunni population. the government was over thrown earlier in the year. groups like al-qaeda have gained a foot hold a group claiming to be associated with isis is claiming responsibility for the attack. >> protesters planning an an anti-war protest. they are marking the 12th anniversary of the united states invasion of iraq. several groups taking part in

today's rally including code pink and they say they want to stop the united states from any involvement in the middle east and asia. it starts at noon on powell. police are investigating a shoot that left a 19-year-old injured and put a school on lockdown. it happened outside the high school just after 3:00 yesterday afternoon. police say that the victim was not a student at the school. investigators searched a four block area around that campus after the shooting. two people were detained but investigators are still trying to figure out if and how they may be involved. >> i was out front and i seen him, he was all bloody. the teacher came out. >> a young man got shout. i usually pick up my nephew. that was weird. >> police are looking in to the possibility that the shooting is related to another shooting from thursday. police say the victim is not cooperating with investigators. >> a worker is being accused of filming co workers inside a rest room with a hidden pen camera. it happened at the mount zion

campus. septemberors say the 34-year- old was arrested after they found video of five of his female co workers. women are very upset. >> at the end of the day that is why these cases are viewed so seriously and that's why we charge them when we have the evidence. >> according to a report by the police he said he looked at the videos to satisfy a personal perversion. one victim said that he no longer works there. lamb is free on bail while his case is pending. a lawsuit against san francisco police chief could go to trial as early as april 20 april 20th. the chief is accused of firing former police department attorney kelly ohare back in 2011. decree said it was in revenge for a 2009 case when he was deputy chief. he recommended that he should be fired for miss handling i -- a friend's complaint. this lawsuit seeks damages for

lost income and emotional disstress. a judge in san francisco has thrown out a drunk driving case against a former firefighter. two years ago investigators say michael quinn was driving a fire truck when it hit a motorcyclist. he was seriously hurt. police say that blood alcohol tests on quinn were not done until six hours later and they showed he was above the legal limit but the judge said the delay in testing was to long and there was no way to know if he drank after the crash. >> in this morning's weekly address the president is putting pressure on republicans to confirm new york prosecutor loretta lynch as the next attorney general. >> she has been doinged in her pur -- dogged in pursuit of public corruption. >> the president first nominated her four moss ago to replace the out going general but the gop senate has yet to bring her nomination to vote. the president accuses republicans of playing politics with the high profile cabinet

post. tickets go on sailing -- sale for an appearance by the youngest noble peace prize winner she won last year. she will speak at the san jose state university event center on june 26th. she is from pakistan and has been working for education for girls. the taliban tried to kill her when she was 15. she was shot in the head. >> the 30th flower and garden show is underway at the san mateo event center. this year's theme is mother nature going wild. the show features tens of thousands of plants and garden related products. there are also more than 100 free how to seminars and hands on workshops. some drought resistance plants expected to be a big hit. the event covers five acres and tickets still available. doors will open at ten and will stay open until seven tonight.

be available in tracy a ground breaking was held for a new 660,000 square foot center yesterday. the fedex facility will open with 390 new employees. fedex said more positions will be added as necessary. >> this hub is specifically going to impact not just tracy the community but all of northern california and it'll create jobs in this community. we are excited to be here. >> the new center will open in august of next year. while the state unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest level in seven years. in february it dipped to 6.7%. that's down from 8% in february of last year. california added a total of 29, 400 jobs last month. the leisure industry sought bingest increase adding 12, 600 jobs and overall number of people without jobs dropped by 42,000. there are nearly 1.3 million

people unemployed statewide. >> rosemary calling spring. gloomy. >> i know it does look cloudy. >> it is. you are right. temperatures are coming down for the afternoon. we have spring showers in the forecast by the second part of your weekend. giving you a live look there once again at all of that gray. little bit of fog this morning. visibility looking okay. no thick fog to report. few sprinkles in concord. we take storm tracker 2, not expecting rain today but we have a couple of system that are working through areas over the pacific northwest. here is the one for today. it sort of stalled out over the coast of washington. this is helping bring us the clouds, the cooler air and that will sum up your saturday. so partly cloudy for the afternoon. temperatures continuing to come down. this system back in here is actually going to slide through. by sunday morning we have the possibility of a few scattered showers and by sunday evening

that is going to increase. here we are saturday. i will take you through a couple of days here. through the morning we have those clouds, they pull back in the afternoon. for today partly cloudy. right along the coast to mostly cloudy. then mostly sunny to partly cloudy along the bay and inland. get into sunday morning. things start to change up. you notice the moisture. the mostly cloudy skies. it looks like through the morning we will have that slight chance and in to the afternoon a bit of a lull. by sunday night there is that line of rain beginning to creep in to the very north edge. this could change up just a bit into the second half of sunday. we will track it for you. then into the overnight hours, sunday night into monday morning it starts to move in to the central bay and then by early monday morning it looks like its moving in to the the south bay. doesn't look like a lot but it's going to be enough to bring us the scattered showers over the bay area. sunday night into monday. take a look at the sierra. going to pick up a little bit of snow down to about 5,000 feet before it clears out.

gekkos that make them one of the most amazing climbers. >> the hairs have a direction to them. that's how you turn it on and off. it uses the geometry of the tiny hairs to stick. when it weights its foot on the wall its foot becomes sticky. when it takes another step it unweights the foot and comes off. >> reporter: eventually they hope to use the tech follow guilty during -- technology during space walks. it could also be used to creates a crawling robot that would inspect the space station and with millions of pieces of debris floating through space nasa could send out a space trash truck using the technology to move junk away from satellites or capture it to bring it back. >> i can tow it somewhere safe and get rid of it. then i can take my gripper off. >> all right. back to the developing news in oakland. two people killed. dozens displacedo every night in a fast moving fire.

>> flames spread from one apartment building to the other. dozens of tenants had to evacuate from their homes in the middle of the night. let's go to allie live for us at the scene. >> reporter: the red cross said there are about 30 people who are displaced by this fire that spread to two apartment buildings. it started in the one here behind us. this is on 24th street near san p ablo. this is an old armory that had been converted into apartments. you can is he firefighters are cleaning up. they are packing up. the fire has been under control since four. as we pan off to the left you can see a couple residents are being allowed back in for their homes. the fire started in one of the units in this building on the left hand side of the building. firefighters say the two in that apartment died in this area. it started at 3:30 and the fire spread to a second building

that faces 23rd street. go apartment buildings affected. one of the residents said he woke up at 3:30 when the fire started to see smoke filling the building in his room and he and some neighbors ran out in to the hallway. they tried banging on the door of the apartment where the fire started. >> we saw a lot of people trying to break down the door of the apartment next to us where the fire was. then they just told us to get out so we ran out. it was really scary. >> >> reporter: now just before the fire was brought under control around 4:15 you can see the flames as far as the east shore freeway. we don't know the identity of the two people who died in this fire. residents say a lot of the people who live in the building are artists and musicians and the battalion chief said that when the fire started the unit where it started there were some cans or cans of paint or gas or something that kept popping and exploding while firefighters were inside the building. they figured out where the fire

check thought video from yosemite. it gives us a new look at the impact of the drought. this video spans over four years. the recording starts on march 19 march 19th 2011 at half dome and you saw plenty of show covering the park. as it fast forwards in two years later on the same date in 2013 snow on the top. yesterday that same camera showed snow on the far distance peaks. east bay -- a new budget that could lead to big rate hikes if the drought gets worst budget could include a temporary sur charge of up to 25%. according to east bay mud the lack of rain combined aging

pipelines the big factors. up to 30 miles need to be replaced taking up to $70 million of the total budget. on top of that districts may have to buy water. >> the supermarket chain said it'll save four million gallons of water each year. it is switching to a new line of soap that requires less water rather than relying on chemicals it features enzymes so it doesn't require rinsing. they said it costs about the same as the old ones and killed germs just as well. >> we decided we wanted to partner on it. be first to market to reduce the water we use because of the drought conditions. they are the first chain in the united states to use this new line. workers will spend 23 hours less a year scrubbing rinsing the kitchen.

here say look at some of the top stories we are following for you we are monitoring a deadly apartment fire in west oakland. allie just reported treasure hunting about ten minutes. that blaze broke out just before 3:30. right near interstate 980. flames spread to a second apartment building. it took firefighters about an hour to put out that fire. the bodies of the two victims were found on the second floor of the first apartment building. >> this was a very rapidly

growing fire. crews that why on scene faced very challenging conditions. >> approximately three dozen tenants in the two buildings were forced to evacuate. about 40 firefighters were brought if to knock down the flames. the cause isn't known. coming up in the next half hour we will return to the scene for a update. seven children are dead after a fire in a house in brooke lynn. the children range from five to 15 years old. two other people were critically injured in that fire. federal investigators are looking for a motive behind a machete attack at louis armstrong airport near new orleans a 63-year-old man tried to get past a security checkpoint. he sprayed a bug spray in the face of a agent and then swung a machete at other agents a armed deputy then shot and killed him. the incident happened around the same time that a flight

held yesterday for the 13-year- old. the girl died wednesday in a fire. her father also died in that fire that burned their home. >> just a beautiful young girl. so much potential. just -- hard to make sense of it. >> the fire that killed her and another deadly fire a few block away has city housing officials stepping up safety enforcement. the focus is on three apartment buildings with outstanding violations. among them are allegations of missing or nonworking smoke detectors, blocked fire escapes and chained exit doors. police are investigating the death a man who was found at the bottom of a high school pool. the body was found yesterday morning in san jose after the cover was removed. the man was not a student at the school and firefighters say he was weighted down at the bottom of the pool. >> we were able to use our special equipment to get the body. to pull the body out of the pool. that body is now in the cust

city council -- custody of the coroner. >> it's not clear how he ended up in the pool. the pool is surrounded by a 15- foot fence and an aalarmed security system. >> a mother wants the city to install a memorial bench at the park where her son was killed two years ago. she marked the anniversary of her son's death by visiting the park yesterday. she said honoring her son's memory with a bench is something that her son would have wanted. >> he would have loved to have been jogging down the hill and get to the end of the hill and be able to have somewhere to sit as well. we think it makes sense. >> on wednesday a jury convicted a 22 -year-old of second degree murder for the death. death of eric wright. they were said to be friends. >> shock and outrage over an initiative that condones the execution of gay people. california officials say that they may not be able to stop it

from appearing on the state ballot. the proposed measure would legalize killing gays a southern california attorney wrote the act. it calls gays a monsterrouse vail and said gays should be put to death a state senator said it tests free speech and the initiative process. it costs about $250 to file the initiative and the state attorney general may have no choice but it let it go forward to the secretary of state. >> she has to do that which is required of her. her. she will have a write a title and summary and then this individual will have an opportunity to gather signatures. >> a group of california lawmakers has filed a complaint. there is also a change.org petition. he hasn't talked much about the

proposal. he needs 366,000 valid signatures to put it on the ballot. london has revealed a new memorial in honor of the lives lost in the interest for attacks in new york. it's made up of a rusty piece of metal from the world trade center towers. the uk was the hardest hit country in the attack. out of 3,000 killed, that day 67 were british. >> there are value that unite us, london, my country with the united states of america, freedom, the rule of law, ability to say what you want. those things are not trivial. >> it also helps teach young people act the threat of terrorism as the united states and uk face new dangers from isis. >> dozens of strand sea lion pups have been found. all of them hungry. rescuers are now working hard to get them healthy and back into the water where they belong. those pups represent just a

fraction of the nearly 600 sea lions taken in by the center. that number is ten times more than what is normal for this point in the season. rescuers say they are in crisis mode. desperately trying to save them. there are so many volunteers have had to color code their heads to tell them apart. >> they are -- bones with skin on them. they are just so sick and they are just so tired. they are so weak. they can't move around. let alone try to swim and catch fish. >> experts say the colder water brings more fish to the surface but ocean temperatures are four to six degrees warmer than normally. with nursing sea lions having to travel further and deeper to get food the pups aren't getting the food they need. if you would like more information on what you should do if you find a stranded sea lion go over to ktvu.com and scroll down on the main page and you will find more on the

marine mammal center. it's a story with a very happy ending. dozens of dogs waiting to be killed and eaten in south korea have been rescued and flown to the united states. right now vet and behavioral professionals in the bay area are working to prepare them for adoption. 57 faces, some sad, some scared, some with a range of emotions. >> hi. >> this is about cruelty and pain which is universal. >> reporter: their story starts in south korea a farmer was raising them to be sold for eating. >> dogs live in darkness, very dark, small cages, there is no heating, winter is very cold. >> one of the other twists to this story is how they would have been killed. the they are either electrocuted or hanged.

>> you can see what's happening. you can see the guy pick up the stick. you can see -- you can hear the dog screaming. >> reporter: the one expert witnessed the killing but said he also convinced the farmer to hand over the rest of the dogs. >> he was really had a desire to get out of the trade and get into something else. >> reporter: he said there is a life among some in south korea that dog meat is good for one's health. he said to support the industry two million dogs are killed every year. >> potentially not illegallive. it's not legal and it's not illegal. it's a sort of tricky spot because they aren't really recognized officially as being food. >> reporter: the humane society said it spent $36,000 to rescue and fly the dogs to san francisco. the staff at the spca is tasked with assessing the health of the animals. >> many of them are shy. we are confident that most of

them can accept and live in the bay area. >> the spca said they could be available for adoption possibly as early as next week. some of them are still in quarantine. they have been taken to facilities in oakland and sacramento and -- the spca has 15 of them right now. they also rescued the humane society 23 back in january from another farm. that farmer is now growing blueberries. some of them are trying to get outlet mall of -- get out of. the eating of dogs is one of the things that different, older generations have done in the past and younger generations are trying to change it. treasure. >> i imagine the dogs won't have any problems finding homes. >> i don't think so. >> thank you. >> hundreds of students forced to stay at one bay area school for several hours. at eight the scary encounter for students and the search underway for the gunman. >> first a fight for one

temperatures continue to cool and we add the possibility of a few scattered showers as early as tomorrow and that will increase into the evening. i will show you the future cast coming up. >> thank you. we are following this morning's developing story in the east bay. firefighters still at the scene of a deadly apartment fire in west oakland. that fire claimed the lives of two tenants and left threads homeless. an investigation into the cause of that fire is just beginning. hi. >> reporter: hi. the red cross said there are about 30 people who have been displaced. some of them behind us have been allowed to go back in to the building and collect some of their belongings. we had a chance to talk to a couple of them. one of their neighbors, two of them who lived in one of the units pass away in this fire. the two people who lived in that unit. this is at 24th street near 24

24th and san pablo. one of the victims was a well known artist who lived and did his work in that apartment. the other was his roommate who had just moved in a couple weeks ago. this was a three alarm fire with flames going through the roof. when it start add round 3:30 this morning. it was tough to put out this fire because the apartment building was in an old brick armory building so a lot of unusual configurations of the rooms. we know that the fire alarms were working because that is how they got the calls. a neighbor woke up to find smoke filling his apartment he and some of the others ran out in to the hallway and banged on the door of the apartment where the fire started. >> we saw a lot of people try to break down the door of the apartment. so, then they just told us to get out so we ran out.

are going to have pretty fabulous weather. we will be cooler than where we have been with the possibility of partly cloudy skies to mostly cloudy skies along the coast. 55 degrees right now in san francisco. 57 in oakland. 59 in concord, mid-50s in san jose. low 50s over parts of the north bay and santa rosa reporting a little bit of patchy dense fog this morning. as we get into the afternoon, temperatures will still be above average, just not as warm as we have been. widespread low 60s along the coast. we've got 69 in redwood city. 69 in hayward, and low 70s for concord livermore, san jose and into morgan hill. tomorrow temperatures will fall off a little more and we introduce the possibility of scattered showers to the bay area. i'll show you that along with the extended forecast coming up. >> thank you very much rosemary. new this morning, the coroner's van from the alameda county sheriff's office is on scene of a deadly apartment fire in the east by bay. let's go back to allie rasmus who's been there at the scene

all morning long with the latest. >> mike that coroner's van arrived probably about half an hour ago. you can see the front of the apartment building where this happened is roped off. investigators are still on the scene here. this is where the fire started around 3:00 this morning. oakland firefighters say this is an old armory building that had been converted into apartments and firefighters say two people who lived in the apartment unit where the fire started died in that fire. at its worst this was a 3-alarm fire that took between 40 to 50 firefighters almost an hour to get it under control as flames soar through the roof of the building. investigators aren't releasing the names of the two people who died. according to several people who live in this building, one of the victims is a pretty well- known multimedia artist who lived and worked in his apartment on the top floor. the other victim his roommate who according to neighbors had just moved in a few weeks ago. now earlier this morning, a neighbor took us into her yard

to show us the damage from this building, and adjoining building behind it that faces 23rd street. we talked to a resident who lived in the building who said at 3:00 when he woke up, heard the fire alarm because there were working fire alarms here. woke up and saw smoke in his apartment. he and some of the other residents ran into the hallway and banged on the door of the apartment where the fire started. >> we saw a bunch of people trying to break down the door of the apartment next to us where the fire was and then they just told us to get out so we immediately ran out. >> scary. >> it was really scary. yeah. >> and after the sun came up it was damage to particularly the back of this building was much more visible. this is the view as the neighbor took us into the yard to show us how the fire spread. the building where it started was on 24th street but it spread to another building on 23 23rd street behind it.

altogether there are about 30 residents displaced. >> they were form early one big building that had been now divided. fire was able to rapidly spread because they're joining structures. rapidly spread from one side to the other across basically a city block. now the battalion chief out here says this was a pretty challenging fire to fight because of the con figure ration of this converted building. it's an old armory building that had been converted into apartments effort there's a lot of oddly shaped rooms. he also said because there were some canisters of butane gas or flammable materials in the apartment where this started. this was also another challenge for firefighters. as they were going in some of those materials kept exploding. it may have been the materials of the person who lived in that apartment. a lot of his neighbors tell us he was a multimedia artist who

had exhibits going on in several bay area locations. back to you guys. very sad start for the art community there in west oakland. thanks for that report. a malfunctioning hot plate is being blamed for an early morning fire that left seven children dead. it happened in brooklyn new york just before 12:30 in the morning eastern time. four boys and three girls were found in their bedrooms. their mother and teenage sister are in critical condition after they jumped through a window to escape the flames. officials call it the city's largest fire tragedy in years. time is 9:06. a flight from sfo landed at the new orleans airport just before a wild machete attack happened there. investigators say 63-year-old richard white tried to get past the security check point last night. when a tsa officer asked him for a boarding pass officials say white squirted wasp spray in the agent's face and took

investigating a shooting that left a 19-year-old man injured and put a school on lockdown. it happened just after 3:00 yesterday afternoon. police say the victim was not a student at the school. investigators searched a four- block area surrounding the campus after that shooting. two people were detained, but investigators are still trying to figure out if and how they may be involved. >> i was out front and then i seen him. he was all bloody and stuff. and the teacher came out and told me to get back inside. >> where the young man got shot, i usually pick up my nephew from that spot. that was kind of weird. >> police are looking into the possibility that the shooting is related to another shooting on thursday. officers say the victim is not cooperating with investigators. today is the sixth anniversary of one of the darkest days in the history of the oakland police department. sergeants mark dun michigan, i have been romans, daniel is a cay and officer john hag gee were shot and killed march 21 march 21st, 2009 by a wanted

parolee. the gunman was later killed that day by law enforcement. a ucf worker being accused of filming co-workers inside a restroom with a hidden pen camera. it happened at the mount zion campus in the pulmonary and sleep practice office. investigators say 34-year-old keen lamb was arrested. they found video of five of his female co-workers. the district attorney's office says the women were very upset and victimized for months. >> at the end of the day, that is why these cases are viewed so seriously, and ha is why we charge them when we have the evidence to do so. >> according to a report by ucsf lamb says he looked at the videos to satisfy a personal per vision. one victim tells us he no longer works there. lamb is free on bail while his case is pending. a judge in san francisco has tossed out a drunk driving case against a former firefighter. two years ago investigators say michael quinn was driving a fire truck when it hit motorcyclist jack frazier. he was seriously injured.

police say blood alcohol tests on quinn weren't done until six hours later and showed he was above the legal limit, but the judge says the delay in testing was too long and there was no way to know for sure if he drank after the crash. the state unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest level in seven years. in february it dipped to 6.7% down from 8% in february of last year according to the state employment development department. california added a total of 29400 jobs last month. the leisure and hospitality industry saw the biggest increase, and the overall number of people without jobs dropped by 42,000. there are nearly 1.3 million people unemployed statewide. president obama says he's tired of waiting for republicans on the nomination of loretta -- >> she's been dogged in her pursuit of public corruption. she's jailed some of new york's most violent and notorious mobster asks if gang members.

fast moving flames, you're looking at two apartments buildings this morning in west oakland. firefighters say the conditions were challenging and dangerous. >> that's right. when they entered a top floor apartment, they found two people dead, one of them we're told was a well-known figure in the local art community. >> ktvu fox 2's allie rasmus has been there all morning on

the scene talking to neighbors and fire officials. >> yeah, let's go back to her right now at the scene with the latest on that investigation. hey alley. >> hi, mike. the alameda county coroners just arrived about an hour ago. we saw them remove one of the victim's bodies from the apartment building. this is where the fire started around 3:00 this morning on 24 24th street near san pablo and west oakland. this is an old brick armory building and firefighters say it had recently been converted into some apartments. two people who lived in an apartment unit on the top floor a lofted unit are the two victims of this fire. both of them died in this fire. at its worst this was a 3 3- alarm fire. investigators say they're not releasing the identities of the two victims yet but according to several people who live in this building, one of the victims is a well-known multimedia artist who lived and worked in that unit on the top floor. the other victim, his roommate who according to neighbors had just moved in a couple weeks ago.

we talked to one resident who told us he woke up at 3:00 this morning to see and smell smoke filling his apartment. he and his roommate rushed out into the hallway. he and several other residents banged on the door of the apartment where the fire started. they tried to wake the people inside up but it was too late. >> when we were in the hallway we saw a bunch of people trying to break down the door of the apartment next to us where the fire was. and then they just told us to get out. we immediately ran out. it is. >> scary. >> it was really scary. yes. >> reporter: earlier this morning a neighbor took us into her yard to show us the damage to the brick apartment building. another adjoining building behind it that faces 23rd street, they're all connected in one building and the fire spread to both structures. there are about 30 residents who were displaced by this fire. >> they were form early one big building that had been now divided. the fire was able to rapidly spread from one side to the

other across basically a city block. >> reporter: again, investigators aren't releasing the identities of the two people who died in this fire until they notify their next of kin. according to several people who live in this building, several neighbors. one of the people who died is a multimedia artist who has exhibited his art work and galleries here in the bay area. he did a lot of metal sculpture type work. the battalion chief said there were a lot of flammable items in the apartment where this fire started. some butane gas or compressed gas canisters possibly and that posed a challenge to firefighters out here when they were going in trying to tackle the fire. some of those gas canisters kept exploding. i'm going to move forward a little bit if this car goes past here. there are still investigators here at the scene. they've closed off the front entrance to this building. some of the residents were able to go back and retrieve some of the their belongings. according to several people two

in san francisco's mission district has now been lid to rest. a -- been laid to rest. a funeral was held yesterday afternoon. the girl died on wednesday in a fire. her father also died in that fire at 24th and treat. >> just a beautiful young girl, you know, so much potential. it's just hard to make sense of anything like that. >> now the fire that killed amal and her father and another deadly fire a few blocks away in january has city housing officials stepping up safety enforcement. the focus is on three apartment buildings with outstanding violations. among the complaints are allegations of missing or nonworking smoke detectors. blocked fire escapes and changed exit doors. police in the south bay are investigating the death of a man whose body was found at the bottom of a high school pool. it was found yesterday morning at piedmont hills high school in san jose after the cover was removed. the man was not a student at the school. firefighters say the man was

weighted down at the bottom of the pool. >> we were able to utilize our special equipment to retrieve the body to pull the body out of the pool. that body is in the custody of the coroner's office. >> what's still unclear is how he got there. that pool is surrounded by a 15- foot barbed wire fence and an alarmed security system. we have more information about the u.s. military evacuation in yemen this morning. in the last hour, we told you that rising tensions is forcing the u.s. to pull out about 100 troops. we've now learned that some of the special forces commandos and other security personnel are leaving near a southern city that has been taken over by al-qaeda. this is in the wake of the islamic militants attacking two mosques yesterday. at least 137 people were killed and more than 300 others wounded. yemen's president this morning announced that the suicide bombings were an attempt to drag the country into chaos. bay area residents with loved

ones in yemen are concerned about the country's growing instability. one man who goes to an oakland mosque says he lost a relative in the yemen bombings. >> people have to know that that's not -- that has nothing to do with islam and muslims you know, and because to kill people they came to the mosque to pray. suni and shiite groups have been clashing in yemen. shiite rebel just issued a call to arms to battle forces loyal to yemen's embattled president. london has unveiled a new memorial in honor of the lives lost during the 9/11 terrorist attack in new york. the sculpture is made up of a rusty piece of metal from the world trade center tower. the uk was the hardest hit foreign country in that attack as the nearly 3,000 people who were killed that day, 67 were british. >> there are values that unite

the winter is very cold in korea. >> one of the twistors this story -- twists to this story is how these dogs would have been killed. back in south korea the sfspca says there's a couple options, they're either elect cuted and in some cases strung up and hanged. >> you can see the guy pick up the electrocution stick. >> he says he witnessed the killing but he says he also convinced the farmer to hand over the remaining dogs. >> he was really -- had a desire to get out of the trade and get into something else. >> he says there's a belief among some living in south korea that dog meat is beneficial for one's health. he says in order to support the industry 2 million dogs are killed every year. >> it's not illegal. it's not legal and it's not illegal. it's sort of a very tricky spot because they're not really recognized officially as being a food product. >> humane society international

says it spent $36,000 to rescue and fly the dogs of all different breeds to san francisco. the staff at the san francisco spca is now tasked with assessing the health of the animals. >> many of them are shy, but we are confident that most of them can accept and live happily in the bay area. >> the spca says the dogs could be available for adoption possible as early as next week. the spca facilities in san francisco, oakland and sacramento will have the dogs as well ass marin county humane society. the humane society international rescued 23 dogs back in january from another south korean dog meat farm. the organization said that farmer is now growing blueberries and the farm that these dogs recently were rescued from the humane society international says that farmer who is looking to get out of the trade is looking to grow chiles. >> it sounds like they want to be out of this trade. >> this trade exactly. it's the older generation that continues to use the dog for
