. police shoot suspects in two bay area cities. one at a busy north bay center. the other a northeast neighborhood. >> good afternoon. >> the first shooting was just before 6:00 tonight. officers shot a man in the parking lot of a shopping center on admiral callahan lane off interstate 80 across from the fairgrounds. >> reporter: if you take a look out here you can see a couple of layers of crime tape. investigators have been

diagraming the crime scene and selecting evidence. also a forensic fan pulled up here in the parking lot to help with that. here at the scene you see quite a few evidence markers around the parking lot. this is between a sleep train and target store. also a dark colored truck parked nearby. we have seen investigators tonight focused on the area. there are officers from both the vulayho police department and the district attorney's office out here. just this started before 6:00 p.m. investigators confirming police were called out for a report of a man wielding a knife at this shopping center. police tell us when they got here the suspect was still armed with a knife. they say there was a verbal exchange before at least one officer opened fire. the suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment. no word yet on how many times he was shot or whether he is expected to survive. police also would not confirm for us how many

officers were involved at the shooting but said that none of the officers was hurt. also one of the sergeants out here telling me they do expect them to be out for at least another hour or two while the investigation is continuing tonight. >> all right. thank you. now to the scene of tonight's second officer involved shooting. want to take you live to the scene in richmond. these are live pictures of 38th street near barrett avenue. police say that around 7:15 tonight a sergeant tried to pull over a black pt cruiser at a traffic stop. again this happening in richmond. instead of stopping they say the driver took off. police say a short chase ensued before the passenger with a gun jumped out of the car and took off running. new at 10:00 a couple on a morning walk found an explosive device at a park today.

they described it as a possible home made explosive device. they were walking through the park. the couple described as the device as a jar with a flammable substance. deputies arrived and blocked off the park. the san mateo bomb squad responded and dismandled the device at the scene. two men killed in an oakland apartment fire are being mourned tonight. christina talked to neighbors who say they rushed to help when the flames broke out. >> reporter: a beeping sound in the still of the night was the first sign something was wrong in this west oakland neighborhood. >> the smoke detector was going off for at least five minutes. >> reporter: firefighters looked inside the building for 10 minutes and found the problem inside unied d. >> that's when they started to try to break down the door. the second they did they -- smoke

started spilling out. and he yelled for us to get out. >> i started taking my flash light and running up and down the block and was like fire fire get out. >> reporter: two men inside unit d. a 35-year-old and 28-year-old died. one of the people was an artist. >> he is a talented painter. and he also did sculp tures. and was very popular in the bay area. >> reporter: the second victim just moved in with the artist. nearly three dozen people were displaced. >> this is an old armory. converted into live work space s. and smaller apartments. so there's a lot of ways for the fire to really get going here. >> reporter: investigators say the fire also broke a water heater inside the burning unit adding to the extensive water fire and smoke damage. it's why restoration crews were called to cleanup and the red

cross stepped in. >> this is a really disturbing event today. really i wanted to come by and say that the city is sorry that this happened to you. it's our job to keep everyone safe. >> reporter: neighbors are shocked and eager for investigators to figure out how this fire started. >> this group of people is just the nicest people in the world. it's very sad this happened. we're thankful to be alive. >> reporter: one of the teenage boys who admitted to sex wall assaulting a south bay girl reached a settlement with the victim's family. audrey pots committed suicide after the assault and the alleged sharing of cell phone pictures with students at sarah toga high school. when the criminal case resulted in juvenile sentences the family sued for wrongful death. yesterday they reached a settlement for an undisclosed amount and the other two attackers have shown no remorse. a 40-year-old man is under

arrest in connection with the body dumped in a barrel in front of sonoma city hall. police say they were called to city hall last night. there they discovered a barrel covered with bloody blue plastic tarp and man's body inside. investigators arrested christopher mcknight at a mobile park two miles away. they are not yet releasing the identity of the victim. a man swinging a machete at a security check point at the new orleans airport died. he was shot by police as he chased a security agent. >> reporter: authorities say that richard white walked into the new orleans airport like any other traveler. got into the tsa precheck line and was confronted by an officer checking id's. he tried to storm the check point. pulled out a can of wasp spray. sprayed one officer in the face. a second later he pulled out a machete more than foot long and sliced another officer in the

arm. another protected himself with a passenger's bag. white chased a female officer through the detector. that's when a lieutenant with the jefferson parish sheriff's office shot white three times. >> he saved a lot of people's lives. this man was swinging hard. hard with that machete and if he would have made contact with anybody it would have been terrible. and i just feel like our job as tsa is to protect the passengers and i'm proud to say they were protected. >> hops a bench and comes toward my wife and i and i start swinging my suit case. >> we heard screams. saw a man jumping over the agents and then we heard two shots fired. everyone in the area started screaming and got down on the floor. >> reporter: witnesses got pictures of white being taken to the hospital. had to have surgery after being shot in the chest, face, and leg. white is a taxi driver who doesn't have

much of a criminal history. the motive doesn't appear a threat to national security. the tsa agent is recovering and the airport is back up and running. an international deal to end iran's nuclear program is facing a new deadline. john kerry is in london for talks about the details of the possible deal. after he arrived a leader blasted the u.s. for bullying iran in the negotiations. before leaving for london, kerry was cautiously opmystic that a deal would happen. >> we have not reached the finish line. but make no mistake we have the opportunity to try to get this right. it's a matter of political will and tough decision making. >> reporter: iran again denied that the nuclear program is for purposes of making weapons. the new distrust stems from

disagreement over when sanctioned would be lifted. they set a march 31 deadline to reach a deadline. hundreds of protesters today since 12 years of u.s. invasion of iraq. the protesters took aim at president obama's push for congress to formally authorize the use of military force against isis. the president's proposal doesn't call for the deployment of ground troops but gives the military flexibility to confront unforeseen circumstances. protesters say the propose sl the latest attempt to continue a failed military policy. >> it's the people of -- of position to militarize u.s. foreign policy which has brought us death destruction and the waste of three trillion dollars over the last 12 years. people are really sick of it. >> reporter: in the 12 years

his wit and wisdom went well beyond the books. >> i remember the broccoli story. >> reporter: students past and present of professor nick anest. >> about him and cooper going to the talkria. >> reporter: swapping stories lifting days of unbearable sadness. >> then i saw like -- nick's name. i was like -- not possible. you know. like nope. >> reporter: the 55-year-old drowned wednesday when he fell out of his kayak into choppy water. a friend in a second kayak tried to help but both men ended up struggling in the water. and only one made it back to shore. >> in the moment he walked into the classroom he was infectious. a huge smile. >> reporter: those taught pulled together this gathering. knowing how he loved the water. often taking field trips to the beach and enjoying it with his now 9-year-old son. >> in a way the beach is also kind of peaceful. and i think a bonfire is a nice way to send

have a social intelligence and this way of making feel happy. >> he wasn't easy but every student respected him. >> loved him. right? everybody loved him . >> reporter: tonight nick might have loved the way they came together to find comfort and laughter amid the hugs. >> he was a hugger. loved to hug people. . >> reporter: when classes resume monday the college will have counselors ready for students, staff, and faculty. and the man who survived the accident also attends the jc so there is concern for him too after the trauma he has been through. >> do we know anything about life jackets? >> both men were wearing life vests. but he was found without his. so apparently it slipped off in the water. he was an experienced kayaker and had been in the area paddling many many

times. >> such a sad story. an accident at point raise this afternoon killed a hiker and seriously injured a second hiker. they were on arch rock when part of the cliff collapsed and they fell 70 feet. rescue crews brought them into hospital. but one died before reaching the hospital. authorities have not yet released the names of the victims. u.s. troops are evacuating a yemen air base after alkidey launched an offensive on a nearby city. the troops are said to be the last american military force in yemen. this is after two deadly suicide bombings. one survivor said the blood was flowing like a river after the bomb. many killed were children. >> when the first explosion happened they used the chaos to enter the mosque in prayer and blow us up from inside and the first line of the congregation.

>> reporter: the militants carried out suicide bombings. the attacks are the first since they set up a branch late last year in yemen. 7 children from one family were killed in a house fire in new york city. investigators believe a faulty appliance may be the blame. officials say the house did not have enough smoke detectors. >> fire officials say the flames started shortly after midnight while children were sleeping in bedrooms at the back of the brooklyn home. more than 100 firefighters raced to the scene to help. but 7 of the children were not able to make it out in time. their mother and a teenage sibling survived after jumping from the second floor. fire commissioner says the victims were between the ages of 5 and 16. >> it's a tragedy for this family and for this community. it's a tragedy for our city. >> reporter: investigators believe a malfunctioning hot plate left on a kitchen counter ignited the flames that raced up

to the second floor. officers believe the jewish family may have left the hot plate on to keep food warm during the sabbath. >> you always think the fire happens in different neighborhoods. never close to home. now it's home. >> i just know the mother and i really hope that -- i don't know if she makes it through this. i don't know how she'll face it. >> reporter: the mayor visited the scene and surveyed the damage in the home. he calls what he saw unimaginable. >> you can only imagine that this beautiful vibrant family 24 hours ago. and now so many lost. and two clinging to life. >> reporter: fire investigators found a smoke detector in the basement but none on the first or second floor. today marks 6 years since oakland suffered one of the darkest days. the deaths of

four officers killed in the line of duty. a march 21st, 2009 motorcycle patrol officer were killed during a traffic stop by parolee vixen. after a massive man hunt he was found hiding in his sister's apartment. when a swat team moved in, he shot and killed romans and sacai. later dna linked him to sexual assault the morning the officers were killed. and to the rape of a 12-year-old girl a month earlier. encouraging news to report on a 25-year-old man who was hit by a truck and then robbed. tonight the times is reporting greg lowery is out of a coma and talking. doctors say he may be able to move to a rehab facility in the coming weeks. he was hit by a pickup at adline and 8th streets in january. the truck driver stopped and that is when police say a group of people came and robbed both the elderly

driver and lowery. no arrests have been made. richmond police are investigating a deadly shooting near a housing comprex. the killing happened last night at 10:30 near the monterey pines complex. police came and officers found that victim dead there at the scene. he is identified tonight at 23-year-old robert griffin jr. police have made no arrests. last thursday we told you about the rising number of homeless camps along the petaluma river and environmental damage. today dozens of volunteers headed out to clean up some of the mess. they gathered hundreds of pounds of debris at one camp. there are no roads there. just hiking trails. it was loaded on to boats to be hauled away and a bb gun found. they tried to steer the homeless but say often people choose to ignore that help that's being offered.

and started to come back down backwards which is not a normal thing. i was pretty terrified. there was a lot of screaming behind us. >> reporter: 230 skiers were evacuated. the lift will stay closed until engineers find out how that rollback happened. a man who was bit by a tiger shark says he was lucky the animal didn't like what he tasted. >> it was surreal. then i said yeah it's coming. it's happening. >> reporter: dr. ken grayson was snorkeling with his sons on wednesday when he said a black cloud appeared in hawaii. he didn't know what it was then realized it was a large shark. >> i'd heard that you should hit the shark in the face. but it's very difficult to hit the shark in the face because there's a lot of teeth there. and sharp and moving fast. and it's happening very quickly. but i hit it in the side of the

head. >> reporter: the shark did bite him in the arm and he had surgery. he is expected to fully recover. he says it's a bump in the road. he said he's not sure if he'll snorkel again. >> yeah. if i knew a shark was coming if i would think i'm supposed to hit it. i would have been in panic mode. >> might be the only option. otherwise it's lunch time. she was targeted and nearly killed by the taliban for promoting education for young girls. now this young nobel peace prize winner is coming here. now thanks to the generosity of people in northern california this man has a home to call his own.

populations at 3.2% and salt lake city in the top 10. almost 100 guns off the street in san francisco tonight. people handed over the guns no questions asked at the ela hill community center. people got cash in exchange. most got $100 but assault weapons were $200. 92 guns were turned in. the event was funded by donations from marijuana clubs and silicon valley investor ron conway. gun violence was the top talk today as barbara lee heard from constituents in oakland. members oof the audience raised a vurity of issues from trade deals to gentrification. they are most worried about neighborhood safety. >> young people deserve not to be victims of this senseless terrible gun violences taking place and how we make sure the young people have the best possible education. >> reporter: congress woman

added while many see washington as dysfunctional a lot is happening in the east bay to move forward with local issues. she was shot by the taliban while promoting education for girls and now she is coming to speak at a bay area university. malala will appear at san jose state on june 26. tickets for the event were on sale today. you may remember three years ago in pakistan she was shot in the head by taliban gunmen to silence her act ivism. people followed the recovery all over the world. she won the nobel peace prize last year at 17 making her the youngest person to ever win that award. >> very inspirational. this may look like surfers but it's not an ocean. the unusual place the surfers put their boards in the water. and mark tracking some rain. his full forecast is coming up next.
