good afternoon. i'm tori campbell we begin with witness -- with breaking news. an alert has gone out to parents for deer valley. school officials say there was an attempted abduction around 9:30 a.m. a girl said a man offered her a ride and tried to grab her. the alert said the man was driving a four-door mazda with missing license plates. this is the second time the antioch school district has

sent out a safety alert to parents this month. protesters blocked the mission bay police station. this is referencing the killing of alex nieto a year ago. brian flores has more. >> reporter: we're live on 17th and valencia. 300 protesters here blocking the mission police station many looking for justice for alex nieto. [chanting] >> reporter: the protest started after 7:00 this morning. the group is calling for justice in the shooting death of alex nieto in the bernal heights neighborhood. alex was shot by police. they mistook his taser for a handgun. last month, it was decided that

four months would not be charged. this morning protesters chained themselves blocking the entrance to the police station and buses. we spoke to alex's father. his comments were translated for us. >> translator: i believe this meeting is very important. it's very important because a year has passed and nothing has been done. we've been given nothing. we've been ignored. so this is a very important gathering because it is drawing attention to alex and to the injust -- injustice. >> i think we're seeing police -- the police are less looking out for the safety of the people and looking out for the safety of business, high-cost businesses and for people who

aren't from the city and didn't grow up here. >> reporter: now, the protesters blocked traffic on valencia and 1 -- 17th. you are taking a live look at alex's parents. they've been very outspoken asking for justice in this case. the four officers were not charged in this case. as we take a look around right now, protesters have been very energetic calling for justice. they've held the same spot for four hours and 15 minutes. it looks like things are cloeing -- are closing down. >> all right. thank thank you for the update. police are reviewing surveillance video of a shooting that occurred yesterday morning after 2:00 a.m. at a 7-eleven. two of the officers happened to pull up the to 7-elevennen

eleven at scott boulevard. when they confronted the suspect, they did not follow his commands and had a gun and they shot him. >> i'm glad the cops did what they had to do. >> police won't say how many shots officers fired. the officers are on paid leave. the clerk working this morning told ktvu her coworker involved in the shooting took the play off because he was shaken up. this is the city's second officer-involved shooting of the year and the other incident the suspect survived. >> the san francisco police department will hold a community meeting to talk about last tuesday's deadly officer- involved shooting. officers say 24-year-old alice brown was driving recklessly in the area of van ness avenue and pine street. they say she drove the wrong way on a one-way street.

sideswiped parked cars and tried to run down officers before they shot and killed her. brown's brother said his sister lived a troubled life including drug addiction. tonight's meeting is set for 6:00 p.m. at st. luke's church on clay street. the u.s. supreme court heard arguments about police compliance specifically when dealing with a mentally ill person who may be armed and violent. this discussed how police dealt with a mentally ill woman who threatened to kill her social worker. police forced their way into his room and then shot and wounded at her as she came at them with a knife. city officials say the ada does not require accommodations for

armed and dangerous people who are mentally ill and pose a threat to others. the 2016 race for presidential is on. it all began with a tweet. ted cruz announced he will make a run for the white house. but joel wauldman reports the -- wald vann reports with more about whether he has what it takes to run. >> today i'm announcing that i'm running for president of the united states. >> reporter: senator cruz is the first candidate in the race for the white house in 2016. the texas republican making it official at liberty university a christian college known for conservative principles. >> it's a time for truth. it's a time for liberty. midnight when cruz fired off this succinct tweet. i'm running for president and i hope to earn your support. but his candidacy is already sparking controversy. a prominent force within the tea party, he's been embraced by some who support his issues on immigration to federal spending but democrats view him as too extreme for his denial of climate change and strong opposition to the affordable care act. back in 2013, he drew attention from fel republicans who blamed him for the federal government shutdown. and then he read "green and eggs and ham" on the senate floor. >> do you like green eggs and ham? >> reporter: in recent weeks, he's raised questions over his own citizenship but he has released his birth certificate saying his mother was a u.s.

two small earthquakes shook santa clara county. the first one was 8:47 a.m. centered north of morgan hill t was a 2-point -- morgan hill. it was a 2.7 and then a mile northeast was rattled. there are no reports of injuries or damages in either break. breaking news in the search for a missing hiker in yosemite. we've just learned he's been found. marin search and rescue say 20-

year-old michael dahl was found this morning. we're told he's alive but does have injuries to his head. he was last seen saturday in the area of lower yosemite falls. that's about half a mile from the visitor sen -- center. no word on how he was hurt or found. a novato boy is recovering in the hospital after falling through a skylight on the roof of an elementary school. ktvu fox 2's tara moriarty tells us what led up to the accident. >> do you have any more rain? >> reporter: novato paramedics worked to remove william wells from the back of his mom's suv? >> you okay? you okay? >> reporter: yesterday morning she drove him to novato community hospital. >> on top of the roof and he fell through a skylight and landed on his back. >> reporter: he was quickly transported to children's hospital in oakland. >> he has seven fractures in his spine and trauma to the head. >> reporter: he was apparently trying to retrieve a ball from

the roof of hamilton school when he fell through the skylight. >> he's very lucky. he could have landed on something. he could have landed a lot harder. it could have been fatal. >> reporter: pictures show the large lump on william's head. he also suffered internal bleeding. while doctors were assessing his injuries, they found something previously undiagnosed, a benign ciys on his brain. they will observe him further before deciding on a treatment for that. for now he may have to have to be in a full body cast. robert durst is being held without bail in a louisiana jail. a judge made that ruling this morning when durst appeared in court asking to be released on bail. he's facing a murder charge in california and weapons charges in louisiana. the 71-year-old was arrested at a new orleans hotel on march 14th. his attorneys say the arrest was illegal. durst was the focus of a

documentary series about his life. it looks into the disappearance of his first wife, the burden murder of a close female friend and the dismembership of an elderly woman. it may be spring but the midwest is getting hit with winter-like weather. snow is falling in chicago. forecasters say it will continue through much of the day. it's from a front coming from the northwest and moving southeast today. this is what it looked like in jordan, minnesota this morning. a steady stream of snow left a couple of inches. authorities were warning drivers to take their time on the slick road. we had a little precipitation this morning as well, rosemary, not snow. >> you're right. we received accumulation in some areas. let's go outdoors where we have unsettled weather in the forecast for your nond afternoon. a beautiful shot looking towards san francisco and the bay bridge.

it's a quiet one out there for most of us. we have a mix of sun and clouds continuing for today and a few showers will remain in the forecast as well. giving you a look at some of the rainfall totals. the areas that picked up .25 in pleasanton and mount tam. more than .50 there. .50 in cazadero and castro valley more than .50. some areas picked up a good amount. the rest of you, not so much. giving you a look at storm tracker, 2 not a lot to speak of. we'll remain unsettled through at least tomorrow morning and i will explain why as we get into that in just a moment. let's take a look at the sierra. it looks like the snow level above blue canyon. some areas like kirkwood, squaw valley reported anywhere from 3 to 4 inches of snow in the last 24 hours. a look at the storms that continue to pass over the

pacific northwest. we do have a system that will creep closer to the north bay as we get into the evening hours and tomorrow morning we could wake up with drizzle. i will show you this as we get into your monday afternoon. a little bit of popup moisture still there. but notice about nok in the -- about 5:00 in the afternoon. we're mainly dry. take a look at what is to the north of us. right there offshore, we have another system that's going to move in as we get into the evening hours, it moves closer to the bay area. we're now into tuesday morning. and the possibility of a few scours will be with us at least for the north bay as we get into late tonight. 64 degrees in walnut creek. we have 60 in san francisco. low 60s in redwood city, san jose you are checking in at 62. for the afternoon, a lot of 60s out there for the afternoon over to the north bay. 66 in novato. for the east bay, mid- to upper 60s in the forecast. 69 in oakland as well as livermore. our south bay locations, 67

santa clara. 69 for morgan hill. 69 for los gatos. at the peninsula, we have 67 in redwood city, the extended forecast here, temperatures will begin to build as early as tomorrow but then really take off as we get into the second part of the week. mid- to upper 60s by wednesday. low 880s in the -- 80s in the forecast thursday and friday. we to cool down a little bit. if you want to call it that, with mostly sunny skies. >> wow. all right. a little taste of summer. >> yes, it seems like it. it's an idea that could make the air we breathe cleaner but it could complicate things for homeowners. the bay area air quality management district wants to ban the sale or rental of a home with a wood burning fireplace. officials say those are the main cause of harmful particulates in the air air. the new proposal would require

homeowners to replace with a cleaner option like a gas or electrical fireplace or certified stove. the district wants this in place by november. the first public meeting is set for wednesday in morgan hill on the matter. the bay area birds found earlier this year covered in the mysterious goo with inspired new legislation. a new bill was introduced by mark leno calling for funding. it would allow $5,000 to be borrowed from the state's oil spill prevention fund. if and when the source of contamination is identified, the people responsible would be required to reimburse the state. under current law -- >> in is a bit of a loophole but we think we found a way to fill it. that is to allow the administrator to borrow funds that will be paid back once we

u.s. stock intense exhave crept fire -- indexes have crept higher. nasty winter weather have to do with sluggish sales. right now the dow is currently up 47. the nasdaq down 3 and the s&p up 2. a well-known waterfront restaurant in san francisco is fighting to keep it doors open despite -- its doors open despite being told by port officials to move out. sinbad was given a saturday deadline to move out. sinbad has been on the embarcadero for four decade. this weekend, owners posted a message on facebook letting customers know they are still open. port officials say the owners are now officially trespassing. the port's been trying to shut down since 2012 to expand terry and taxi service. no word whether a formal eviction notice will be delivered today to force the restaurant to close. we now know more about the woman who died this week in a

rockslided a point reyes seashore. this is new video from the sonoma county sheriff's department helicopter that flew over the landslide near arch rock on saturday. this morning, the sheriff's department identified the victim as 58-year-old nancy blum of san francisco. several others were hurt. a spokesman says a crack in the land was discovered on wednesday. warning signs were posted but no one expected the trail to give way. >> i think what shocked us just as much is how quickly we saw this crack in the ground there and how quickly it broke off. we've never experienced anything like that. >> the area leading up to arch block is now closed. a gofundme account has been set up for the victims. you can find a link to the account on our website at ktvu.com by clicking on web links. mineta san jose international airport set the scene for an emergency response

drill. the senator yoof a boeing 767 strikes a large flock of birds while taking off. officials step into action quickly. emergency exercises like the one today are held every three years to comply with federal aviation regulations and it toast the airport's -- and to test the airport's emergency plan. >> we're always talking planning, communicating, not just for our response but how we can support our airports in the event they have their own incidents. officials say airport and passenger safety is a top priority. drills like the one today allow crew to test their skills where more work needs to be done to enhance security. starbucks is no longer encouraging its baristas to engage customers in conversations about race relations. the ceo said in an open letter yesterday they can stop putting stickers or writing the words "race together" on customers'
