27 up in truckee. sunshine and warmer temps. looks like tomorrow will be the warmest day. a little change by the weekend. a little more. 60s for a few. mid 70s for many. bay bridge westbound as you come up on to the bay bridge toll plaza. 15-20 minute delay. no major problems getting into the city. and the traffic looks good once on the bridge. now once you look at the slow traffic on 580, you will be say this is the way it always is.

unfortunately from 25. there. the police confirm this morning the man accused of opening fire on him he is dead. it started last night when police responded to a call of a welfare check. police officers from several agencies surrounded that building and the neighborhood was evacuated. now we have live team coverage for you this morning. ktvu tara moriarty is at the san jose police department as officers are paying their respects to officer johnson. >> first we want to start with ktvu janine de la vega who is in the neighborhood where this all happened. janine. >> reporter: we are here at center and lewis road. police officers still have this neighborhood blocked off.

about five minutes ago the coroner came and removed the body of officer michael johnson. i just want to step back here so you can see what the scene looks like. neighbors, residents in that area are still evacuated at this hour. now let's go to some video that we shot in the last five minutes or so. you can see there are dozens of patrol cars. those police officers are escorting the body of michael johnson. now this all started at 7:00 last night when police received a call from a woman saying that there was a man with a gun. he was despondent, he was threatening to kill himself. when officers arrived at the scene, the man fired at him. at least one of the bullets hit officer michael johnson killing him. offices did shoot back and then the san jose police department swat team known as a merge unit under surrounded this condo

complex. they never ended up making contact with a suspect when they finally entered in the early morning hours about 3:00 a.m. or so they did find him dead on a second floor balcony. they identified him as 57-year- old scott dunham. right now we are joined by one of the suspects neighbors. deborah turbasques. tell us about this suspect. what did you know of them? >> i had seen him around the complex over the last ten years. he has lived there quite awhile. never noticed anything suspicious. seemed nice muff. we said hello and waved and going to the mailboxes. and back and forth. so yeah it's unbelievable. >> reporter: and he was married an never had issues with police as far as you know?

>> i never saw police coming for any reason to the complex. so little things here and there but never anything big. i talked to his wife several times. very nice lady. had several conversations with her about various things. gardening, weather, the usual. >> reporter: and you were standing with me here you know just moments ago witnessing that procession of patrol cars. what comes to mind as you see all of that? you have been evacuated from your home. what are you thinking of? >> reporter: you know, this is when you realize that it's not about you and i might be a little uncomfortable being out here for awhile but the officers put their lives on the line and the solidarity that they showed during that procession to honor their own is really moving. >> thank you so much for speaking with us.

again a very somber day for the police department and it is being felt by the people that live here in this neighborhood who are still in disbelief and shock as well as the fellow officers. of officer mike johnson who is a veteran of the department and the department hasn't seen a loss like this in the past 14 years. scene still blocked off but we will continue to monitor this situation. pam. >> all right, thank you janine for that update. time is 6:06. we want to continue our live team coverage with tara moriarty and tara, you're at the san jose police department finding out more information about the officer that was killed. >> reporter: yes. the hearts are obviously very heavy here. we've been keeping our distance from officers that we have seen. not only are they physically exhausted from being out at that crime scene, but they are also emotionally drained and the mood here is very somber. we have a picture of the officer michael johnson that we

want to show you. he is a 14-year veteran and this is the first of 12 officers to be killed in the department's 166 year history. at the time he was a field training officer and happened to be in the same police academy as jeffrey. in a ever press conference. police confirmed was for -- >> our thoughts are with the women and men that are out there right now in harms way. they know every day that they put on a badge and a uniform that they take extraordinary risks. >> reporter: the san ho 51 police officers association issued a statement early this morning saying that johnson had been struck down in the prime of his life. think about how difficult it

aviation experts say it's unusual the pilots didn't make a distressed call as that plane took an unexplained eight minute dive. >> they called because they couldn't. something happened to them. whether or not they lost their oxygen. or somebody did something bad. or c they were too busy. but usually having been a pilot you are never too busy when you have an emergency like that. >> as the investigation goes on thousands are mourning -- that is because a group of 16 students and two teachers from the school were on that flight. some of the passengers at the dusseldorf airport are finding themselves stranded today after several german wings flights were canceled. that is because the pilots and cabin crew refuse to fly.

yesterdays crash may be linked to repair of the landing doors on monday. new research suggests that distracted driving among teen drivers is much more serious problem than previously known. according to aaa, distraction was a factor until six out of ten moderate to severe crashes involving teenagers. that is four times the estimate on police reports. singing or moving to music and personal grooming. teens have the highest crash rate of any group in the u.s.. as you get ready to head out the door a search is going on for a vallejo woman reported for kidnap. we'll tell you where search teams are focused.

good morning to you. welcome back to mornings on 2. the san francisco sheriffs department is now re-examining all of its procedures after an inmate escaped from a deputy on monday night. investigators expanded that search to that inmate beyond san francisco. now he was in custody since last summer on weapons and drug charges. he was approved to perform some cleanup work in secured areas inside the jail but on monday night the sheriffs office says it mistakenly allowed him to take trash outside. he was not wearing handcuffs and he took off. on foot. a public workshop is scheduled to take place today in the south bay on the proposed ban on wood burning fireplaces in bay area homes. the proposal calls for homes not to be sold or rented if if they have a wood burning fireplace. instead the homeowner would need to install a cleaner burning device including gas or

electrical fireplaces or a certified stove. now homeowners would also make the fireplace inoperatable. the tear quality management board will hold the community -- hold the meeting at the community center. the santa clara valley water district imposing new restrictions on water usage and they take effect now. water district approved new 30% water use reductions from levels that had been in place. also outdoor watering now restricted to just two days a week. last year the district asked for a 20% water use reduction. customers did cut back on the usage about 11%. board members say if the people don't obey the new rules, there will be consequences. >> if we don't get water use reductions our estimates is that the ground water level would drop. >> landscapers say they are getting lots of calls to replace lawns and other gardens

that need lots of water. after last nights vote, they expect to hear from a lot more people looking for ways to reduce water use. other bay area water districts also thinking about rate hikes,. east bay mud may impose an 8% general rate hike. it could also add 25% surcharge to customers bills. san jose water company looking at raising rates 12% next year. the company says that extra money would help repair its aging and sometimes leaking infrastructure. and they think it could help save water badly needed. the alameda county board of supervisors has signed off on an agreement to negotiate directly with the city of oakland and the private developer. development partner floyd must prove he can finance the

multibe dollar. raiders owner mark davis says he wants to keep the raiders in oakland but he has not committed himself to coliseum city. the raiders are currently pursuing a stadium in a suburb of los angeles. time is 6:17. i know you're watching the roads but your warriors won again last night. >> they won the pacific division which they haven't done since 1976. it's a long time ago. good morning, everybody. let's take a look at this crash that we have on highway 4. this is highway 4 at port chicago highway. we saw the crash here. traffic is getting by it. it was in the lanes at one point. if you driving through the area you can see it. here it is on live tv.

it will really help out our commute. it is gone and traffic is moving along a little bit better. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza, you can see traffic here is backed up for a 15-20 minute delay. no major problems. i want to mention that 680 through dublin heading out of dublin heading south to pleasanton and down to the sunol grade is very slow. 880 is also slow heading down to fremont. a couple earlier issues there. give yourself more time on 880 and 680 south. 6:18 today's weather. here is steve. we have mostly clear skies. a little bit of fog out there. slightly cooler on our temps. a little bit down toward san jose. over all mostly clear and there will be lots of sun. temperatures pushing mid to upper 70s for a few. san jose will be in the mid 70s. average is 67 and 47. average high not that long ago

83. but again that record low at 32 back in 1894 when san jose was the tiny little agricultural town. some low clouds near the coast and the higher clouds have gone way to the north as high pressure builds in. 43 napa airport. a little chill there. novato, santa rosa, redwood city and half-moon bay at 48. they even have fog along highway 1. 54 bodega bay. half-moon bay was 58 yesterday. not much of a breeze and it's variable. by that i mean it's west, it's east, it's east, southeast. not a strong breeze in either direction. 39 bookends washington and new york. 36 chicago. the main system, this is a cold one. and then a mix of fog and rain. but the main focus will be for this system coming out of the

rockies. they have finally talking about a possibility of hail today. it looks like oklahoma it will up today. maybe parts of kansas but they have had a very quiet severe season. this is one of the few days they have something to look forward to. i don't think we will see any tornadoes. truckee 27. south lake tahoe 30. high pressure is building in. lots of sun it will be warmer after patchy fog. 70s for highs for many. although near the coast dealing with a little bit of the westerly breeze and fog. clearlake 76. mid 70s novato in there. kentfield we will go 71. fairfield at 76. brentwood at 77 degrees. 76 for pittsburgh. 75 in walnut creek. 77 for gilroy. santa cruz looks pretty good. on the coast 60s. not warming up too much but low to mid 70s on the peninsula. san mateo at 71. it will be warmer tomorrow.

welcome back to mornings on 2 it's 6:24. italy's supreme court could announce its ruling in the amanda knox case. knox and her former boyfriend were found guilty of killing her roommate back in 2007. and then italy's highest court threw out those acquittals. that court reconvicted both of them last year. they appealed the case and went back to the italian supreme court. knox returned back to the u.s. and will not be in rome for today's announcement. our time is 6:24. boy, what a story. a nine-year-old boy still in the hospital after collapsing

on a school playground and two teachers are being called heros. his name is benny. he passed out on monday during recess. he was face down on the playground. two of the teachers rushed over to help putting their cpr training to work. ? they are heros in our lives. >> i saw his eyes rolling back and we knew it was life or death at that time. >> he's still in intensive care but no longer in critical condition. his family says he's awake and alert and thanks to the two teachers they were certified to use cpr. they also sasinny has a heart

condition. that may have had something to do with his collapse out there. a new used become center is open in san francisco's mission district. a ribbon cutting ceremony was held yesterday. it was put together with help from police officers. chief greg suhr says the park became one of his priorities when he worked in the area during the 90s. at that time the area was dominated by drugs, prostitution, and violence. but that is not the case anymore. it is now 6:26. the san jose police department in mourning after a veteran officer was shot and killed in the line of duty. >> officers were obviously crying, grieving. they will do some if for quite some time. >> up next how if fellow police officers are remembering their fallen brother this morning. >> plus the search intensifying for a vallejo woman that went missing on monday. reportedly kidnapped for

today 76. san francisco 65. bump you up 3. livermore 70 to 74. there is a little bit of fog on the coast. a little bit. it is tough to see. there is some coming down the coast. 40s and 50s on your temps. high pressure says no, i'm kicking in here for three days. lots of sun, warmer. patchy low clouds. by the coast 60s. but 70s for many on the high temps. mid 70s for many. others 60s to upper 60s or low 70s. all right sal you said slow traffic. anything new to report? it's just slow. it's getting slower. let's go outside and start off with a look at the commute on the bay bridge westbound. you can see traffic is busy at the toll plaza. and it's backing up a little bit beyond that mccarthur maze for about a 20 minute delay. once you make it on to the bridge, you look good. you are driving to the san mateo bridge, westbound 92 traffic is a little bit busy before the toll plaza and it continues that way out to highway 101. i want to show you that traffic on southbound 880 is effected

by crashes southbound 880 in the vicinity. you can see how it's better after that crash but the traffic is already slowed back as far as 238. and 680 is also slow heading out of pleasanton down to the sunol grade. let's go back to the desk. this is a tough day for san jose police. they call it their darkest hour. their officers are still at the scene this morning where one of their own officer michael johnson was shot and killed in the line of duty. >> the suspect who's accused of pulling the trigger was found dead just about three hours ago. >> this whole incident began just before 7:00 last night when officers received a 911 call about an armed man that was disupon tent -- despondent and suicidal. officer michael johnson was shot last night as he and other offices approached an apartment complex an center road. ktvu fox 2 tara moriarty is

joining us live. you're at police headquarters now where other police force members are gathering and sharing their grief, tara. >> reporter: we covered a lot of stories. fronting them here from the department but never have i seen so many officers go in and out. a lot of them are going inside to change, get out of uniform. they are emotionally and physically drained from being out at the scene all night and as you can imagine what happened last night is a reminder of the risks that they take every time. that they put on that uniform. right now they are beginning to grieve the loss of fallen officer michael johnson. the 12th officer to be killed in the line of duty in the department's 166 year history. at the time he was a field training officer and happened to be in the same police academy class as jeffrey fontana who was killed during his rookie year. this morning we learned that johnson is married with no children and mayor sam liccardo

ktvu will continue to follow this story for you all morning long. you can also get the latest updates on our facebook and twitter accounts. the search goes on this morning for a missing vallejo woman reported kidnapped. ktvu fox 2 reporter alex savidge is live until vallejo. alex, police are telling you more information about the disappearance of this woman. denise huskins. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. police are continuing to treat this as a kidnapping for ransom case. working on the assumption that huskins was taken by force earlier this week from a home in mayor island. and has been missing since monday. last night the search for the 29-year-old it focused on an area just off the waters -- in the waters off mayor island. right near the highway 37 bridge or south of it. that is where dive teams went in last night. that is because a search dog reacted to an object that was submerged in the water. divers did go in and did an under water search but in the

end they did not find anything significant to this investigation. huskins she has been missing since monday. the fbi is now involved in this investigation. friends and relatives tell us that huskins lived at that home here until mayor island with her boyfriend who police say is not a suspect or a person of interest in the case. investigators say a man called from that home to report the abduction at around 2:00 in the afternoon on monday. that was apparently a number of hours after the kidnapping actually took place which was in the early morning hours on monday and some of the missing woman's relatives believe that delay raises a lot of questions. >> the thing that peaks the curiosity is the amount of time that i collapsed between when it occurred and when it was reported. and when the crime was reported

to authorities. family members tell us huskins recently moved to vallejo from southern california. she was working as a physical therapist at kizer hospital. that is where her boyfriend worked as well. >> very interesting story. and still pretty much a mystery. thank you alex. 6:36 is the time. also new this morning the leaders of germany, france, and spain have arrived at the site in the french alps at the plane crash to honor the 150 people on board. search crews have recovered a badly damaged black box from the plane that crashed in the french alps. they just hope it will be able to figure out exactly what happened. we are now hearing that two americans were on board that plane that crashed and there were also 72 germans, 35 spaniards. it is believed that everyone on the germanwings jet liner that

crashed died. it's unusual that the pilots did not make a distressed radio call as the plane took an unexplained eight minute dive. closing arguments are now under way in the high profile sex discrimination trial in san francisco. ellen pao is suing her former employer kleiner perkins. in his closing statement pao's lawyer says her employer had different standards for men and women and denied her -- pao is suing for $150 million in lost wages and punitive damages. facebook developers conference kicks off in san francisco. about 2,000 peel from all over the world are expected to be there. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg will give the keynote address at 10:00 this morning. he's expected to focus on how

facebook has changed since the conference last year. that would include facebook venturing into virtual reality and messaging. developers are interested in hearing more about parse. it's a cloud service used by app developers to create new products. today the 12 patients involved in that rare kidney transplant operation will hold a reunion. they will find out which patient received his or her kidney. until today all but one remained anonymous. she started the unusual transplant cycle by offering one of her kidneys to anyone who needed it. 93,000 people in the united states are actually still on waiting lists if for kidney transplants. >> that was one of the truly great stories. and you covered it. >> it was a great story i covered it and i know one of the recipients and doing quite well. >> that is good to hear. our time is 6:39.

welcome back to mornings on 2. the san jose city council adjourned early last night because of that deadly police shooting we've been talking about this morning. before that meeting ended, council members did unanimously approve mayor sam liccardo's budget plan for the next fiscal year. liccardo has an $8.5 million budget surplus. now we also want to increase funding for after school programs, expand library hours,

and improve pedestrian safety. the council still has to discuss the spending details and that will be next month. time is 6:43. distracted driving is a factor in almost six out of ten crashes involving teenage drivers. that is according to a new study and on the cell phone use is one of the most common distractions. ktvu fox 2 brian flores is here now to tell us it was actually something else that was the leading cause of distracted driving. right brian? >> right,day. pretty interesting study here. simple factor the teen drivers have less experience on the roadways. we're taking a live look at northbound 880 in hayward. but what was really interesting while using the cell phone or texting was near the top, the main distraction was simply conversing with another passenger. now this was video provided by aaa foundation for traffic

safety. these are actual examples of teens crashing into poles, guardrails, and other cars because they were distracted. the study analyzed more than 1600 crashes of teen drivers ages 16-19. it was main bily looking at dash cam video. something that was never done. the study found a majority of crashes were caused by conversing with another passenger. texting or using a cell phone was a close second at 12%. it found teens involved in crashes six seconds before a crash teens had their eyes off the road.

originally thought. the rain line my goodness. if you haven't heard portland and seattle are doing just fine. not the entire west coast is dry but pretty much california and nevada. but temperatures well they've been above average and they will continue that theme the next couple of days. 60s and 70s. today it's 60s and mid 70s. san jose will be one checking in at 74. 67, 47 is average. so we're above on both sides here. 83 not that long ago. the record high 1997. the record low a long time ago at 32. 40s on the temps or 50s. water temps mid 50s. 54 to 56. keep an eye on that. there is not much of a breeze but it is variable. whatever is there is out of the east, south, northeast.

welcome back to mornings on 2. search and rescue effort turned into a criminal investigation and an arrest. two men and a woman went hiking monday night. now at some point they became separated and the woman apparently got lost. she was reported missing. all three were eventually found yesterday morning. but authorities say the woman was actually evading police because of an outstanding warrant for shoplifting. she was taken to the marin county jail where she was cited and released. texas senator and republican presidential candidate ted cruz is signing up for the affordable care act.

it's a law he has repeatedly tried to repeal. now during his presidential campaign, senator cruz's wife is going on unpaid leave from her job at golden sacks. that means the family will no longer be covered under the health care plan and get federal health care instead. senator cruz says he doesn't find this ironic. he says he's just following the law. he says unlike president obama, he respects the law even if he doesn't agree with it. he also says he will continue to try to repeal the affordable care act. we now know which music stars will be at san francisco's outside lands festival this summer. yep the lineup includes headliner elton john. 70 performers were announced yesterday and organizers say they plan to add more. in addition to elton john the lineup includes mumford and sons, the black keys, sam
