officer down. air down. >> copy officer down. officer down. >> a dark day for a bay area police force after a veteran officer is shot and killed. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. police officers from around the bay area are gathering today in the wake of the deadly police shooting of officer michael johnson. the san jose police officer was shot and killed last night during a confrontation with a man. we have live team coverage. ktvu fox 2's janine de la vega is in the neighborhood where it happened. but first let's go to brian

flores at san jose police headquarters where the flag is at half staff. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. i think san jose's mayor said it best when he said this is san jose's darkest day. we continue to be here at headquarters this morning the flags are remain at half staff in honor of 38-year-old michael johnson. the outpouring of support and grief was seen. this is video of the officers throughout the south bay coming to police headquarters, offering condolences and prayers. we saw officers from campbell, santa clara county sheriff,s, many of them wearing the black band across their badges. but this has been a very tough day for the san jose police department. michael johnson, the first officer to die in the line of duty in 14 years here. from the police chief to other law enforcement, we caught up with a couple of probation officers closely with san jose police and this was tough for them as well.

these -- >> these guys do a job that's so drugs. i think day to day living, we forget what they do for our community and for the citizens. and when something like this happens, you realize this -- they give their life to serve. >> it's a tragic loss. it's not only a loss to our profession but a great loss for this community. so it's a shocker. but it also comes with what we do. god bless the men and women who wear this uniform every day. >> reporter: ed tracy, he was a police captain for the oakland police department back in 2009 when four officers were killed then. this hits close home for him. ann and i extend our deep condolences. this is a state statement from the governor, the officer will

be remembered for his service and dedication to the service and we join the entire community in this loss. johnson was a field training officer for the department. he was in the same police academy class as jeffrey fontana killed and this was 14 years ago. back here to the memorial, it continues to grow. johnson is survived by his wife nicole as well as his parents. flags were flown at half staff as well the state capitol. a very tough day all around here, tori. back to you. >> i can certainly see it. thank you, brian. we now turn to janine de la vega who is at the scene of the shooting where we understand the suspect's body was just taken away about an hour ago, janine. >> reporter: yes. we're here on skenter road near -- center road near lewis. this just opened up to traffic in the last ten minutes. police took down the crime tape. there is still a portion. road that is closed of center

road. people who live there, we're assuming are not being let in where police are investigating, but it's been a very somber food mood out here. a lot of officers trying to process one of their brothers is gone. >> officer down, officer down. >> copy officer down. officer down. >> reporter: a terrifying scene can be described on radio dispatch of what was happening last night on center road after san jose police officers arrived. they were looking for a man on the second floor of a condo complex who reportedly had a gun. police say as officers approached on the sidewalk, the armed man opened fire. >> shots fired both ways. officer down. suspect, rounds at him. possibly went down as well. >> reporter: michael johnson was struck by you an of the bullets -- by one of the bullets and killed. >> i heard very loud gunshots, maybe five or six. >> when i looked at them and saw the guns, it got a little

frightening, and with my kids. i just grabbed my grand kids and we hit the floor. >> reporter: people who lived in the complex were evacuated and the police department s.w.a.t.'s team was called. in. they identify the suspect as scott dunham and were unsuccess f.m. making contact with him -- unsuccessful making contact with him using various means. there found him dead on the balcony. police are unsure if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot or other gunshots. >> officers are crying, grieving. they will do so for quite some time as will many of us in the department. >> reporter: neighbors say dunham did not cause problems. >> very friendly guy. we normally wave at each other and say how are you doing? police don't have a motive

for the shooting. they spent hours interviewing witnesses when the coroner removed his body, there was a procession of patrol cars that followed to escort the fallen officer. neighbors who watch say it put everything into perspective. >> it really brings to life the difficult job that the officers have and how -- how everything they do is really to protect the public and they risk their lives. this is the perfect example. thank them every day. >> reporter: in the last hour, we did see investigators remove evidence from the crime scene. they are still out here. they have a portion of center road cordoned off we don't have a time limit of when it will completely reopen. as you can imagine, it he really tied up traffic around here. we will have more coverage on this investigation and the loss to the police department coming up in our later newscasts. thank you, janine. >> stay with us on ktvu.com and

our facebook page for major developments. you can share your condolences to officer johnson's family and fellow police. there have been major developments late this morning in the search for a missing vallejo woman. reportedly abducted from her home. her family tells ktvu that denise huskins was found safe this morning in southern california. ktvu fox 2 reporter alex savidge is live at vallejo police headquarters with what we've learned from investigators. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: well, tori. good afternoon. vallejo police lieutenant just came out a few moments ago and confirmed that, yes, denise huskins was found safe this morning in southern california in huntington beach where she's originally from. she had just moved up here last year to vallejo. now, we spoke with her family this morning, what they told me is she called up her father from a blocked phone number at about 9:30 this morning and said that she had been dropped off by someone there in huntington beach close to the father's home. she was unhurt. that's what she told her dad. we talked to a short time ago

with huskins' uncle and he said they are ecstatic to find out she's okay. >> joy, elation. relief for everybody. it's -- i don't think the numbness has even worn off. >> reporter: now, vallejo police have not offered any more details on what that were happen todd huskins since she was reported missing -- happened to huskins since she was reported missing. the boyfriend reported she was kidnapped on mare island and there was a ransom demand made in some form or fashion. the boyfriend reported that abduction several hours after it allegedly happened. police never offered an explanation for the delay. yesterday, we learned that the chronicle received and e-mail supposedly sent by the abductor in this case and huskinss' family said they took that e- mail as a hopeful sign she was

still alive. there was audio of huskins given. this is the phone call made this morning. >> answers a phone from an unknown number. she said, i'm safe. they let me go in huntington beach. i'm walking over to your house right now. >> huskins'' uncle told me there was no ran some paid at any point. all of her relatives came up here from southern california during this two-day search. i'm told they are heading back not huntington beach area to be with huskins at this point. throughout this two-day search police have maintained that huskins 'boyfriend was never a suspect or a person of interest in connection with her disappearance. they -- we understand they do maintain that is still the case and they say that the boyfriend has been cooperative. we just learned that in about,

you know five minutes or so -- at about 12:15, vallejo police will be coming out to hold a news conference to give us an update on the investigation. we're hoping to learn more about what happened over the last couple of days. >> another on our facebook and twitter and newscasts. >> thank you. a search and rescue effort on mount tam turned into a criminal investigation and arrest. two men and a woman went hiking monday night in the hills above stinson beach. at some point they got separated and the woman got lost. she was reported missing. all three were found yesterday morning but authorities say the woman was actually evading officers because of an outstanding warrant for shoplifting. >> i have done time for it. i went to court for it and then i didn't do my community service. >> deputies brought bear to the jail where she was cited and released. search crews still combing through the debris field after a german plane crashes in the

investigators haven't said the last communication from the german plane was a routine one was permission to continue on the roof. they are still combth debris field. of the 150 people aboard were at least two u.s. citizens. a contractor from georgia and her daughter. amy kellogg has more. >> reporter: people all over the world mourning those on the plane. citizens from more than a dozen countries on board the doomed plane including two americans. identifying the bodies expected to take several weeks. >> translator: identification is essential and we have to start there obviously because we owe it to the victims' families but i will say it again. it wouldn't be done in five minutes. >> reporter: the airbus a-320

going down on tuesday, 150 passengers and crew on the flight from barcelona to dusseldorf. search and recovery efforts underway in the rough terrain. there don't appear to be any survivors. >> translator: on the ground, we have the best possible technical know-how. they can be gathered around the world to achieve the results from the investigation as quickly as possible. however possible. >> reporter: the leaders of france, germany and spain visiting the crash area as investigators analyze the badly damaged cockpit damaged reporter for any insight into the crash. it doesn't appear to be terrorism. >> translator: all of the theories have to be looked into closely. but that one is not the most likely. >> reporter: the crash hit germanwings employees very hard. many crew members didn'ten want to fly today -- didn't want to fly today. in other cases other airlines stepped in and operated flights

for them. amy kellogg, fox news. >> the state department says it is in contact with family members of the two u.s. citizens confirmed to be on the plane and the spokeswoman says the department is still reviewing its records to determine whether any other americans were on board. and breaking news now in vallejo. police are coming out to update us on the missing woman they believe was kidnapped so we will be covering that story momentarily. lawmakers will hear about testimony about a right to die law from a woman who has already died. britney main arked moved from alamo to portland to take advantage of the death with dignity act. she ended her life last november by taking a combination of prescription drugs. her family released a video that britny had recorded in support of a right to die law in california. it's modeled after the oregon law. the senate health committee is set to hold a hearing this

afternoon on the proposal. and we want to go back to vallejo now as police are coming out to update us on the missing woman, denise huskins, she was found safe in southern california. this is according to her family. found around 9:00 a.m. in huntington beach. >> can you confirm the family's story is? what can you tell us about apparently the -- >> here's what i'm gonna do -- i'm gonna give a brief statement. before we begin, on behalf of the chief and the vallejo police department, we would like to send out our deepest condolences to the family of michael john sond and the police department. this morning, the vallejo police department received notification from the huntington beach police department indicating that our victim, denise huskins, was

located safely at an undisclosed location. currently our d.c.s are working with -- detectives are working with huntington beach and the fbi to arrange for travel so that our detectives may interview and further speak with miss huskins to determine exactly what occurred. we're still treating this as a kidnap or ransom. we have no reason to believe otherwise. and at this point, frommant investigative stand-- from an investigative standpoint, nothing has changed. we will remain guarded with our information until which time we conclude we can release information in a responsible manner. at this time, i will not be taking any questions but i will make myself available for questions. >> do you have any information -- >> you are listening live to a very brief news conference just confirming that they were notified by the huntington beach police department in southern california that denise huskins had been located,

though they did not say specifically when or where. they are still treating this as a ransom and kidnap case. we'll continue to follow this and have more coming up in our newscasts later on. want to check in with mark tamayo. nice, sunny day. >> that's right. we were tracking a few clouds. those clouds are long done. get ready for a warmup. we're talking about more 70s tomorrow. some more 80s. here's our live camera looking out towards san francisco bay and even san francisco already back up to near 70 degrees for 12:00 hour. on the satellite we're looking for southern california. look at this. the entire state is dry. the closest rainfall is up here. way up to the north up towards the pacific northwest. here is a closer look at the satellite. we will have clear skies across the entire bay area. a patch or two of fog near point arena, that's about it. current numbers. they are warm out there. probably already know that. by 10:00 this morning, already warming in the 60s. right now we have 72 degrees in

san jose. santa rosa, 69. novato 66 degrees. forecast headlines, definitely warmer for today. we'll call it borderline hot for tomorrow with temperatures on track to reach the lower 80s and a cooler friday and saturday. these are all minor changes. no big temperature drops in the forecast. but this is the headline for today with a lot of sunshine out there. more 70s. here is the wider perspective out there in the pacific. once again, the main storm track is way up here to the north. so temperatures tomorrow will continue to warm back up into the 70s and the 80s. a dry week ahead with no rainfall in the forecast. the entire state there is maybe a slight chance of a few showers in the northwest tip portions of california. but that's just about it. into the weekend, we're gonna gradually cool things off for saturday and sunday a bump in the numbers. these are minor changes in the temperature forecast. but today we begin to warm things up in the short term. a lot of 70s in the forecast. maps for santa rosa, hayward,

antioch and brentwood. san jose, 75, san mateo, 72. half moon bay, 69 and santa cruz, 76. the look ahead to your five-day forecast, you can see temperatures, they do go up into thursday warmest locations will be approaching the lower 80s. friday we'll cool things off by a few degrees. these are all minor changes. that cooling trend will continue into saturday as a weak system moves to the north bay area. no problems of rainfall for us. definitely cooler air into saturday. by sunday, we'll warm things back up. the dry, warm weather continues. i took a few days off, hoping i would have a new weather pattern to talk about when i came back. same thing. >> still so much concern about the drought. >> and yes, possibly records for tomorrow. >> for heat? >> for heat, yes. keeping teens safe behind the wheel, the leading cause of distractions that leads to

teenaged drivers. but cell phone use is not the leading cause of distraction. this video from aaa shows real instances of teens crashing into poles, guardrails and other cars because of some form of distraction. researchers found 15% of crashes were caused by drivers just talking with a passenger. texting or using a cell phone was the cause of 12% of crashes. teen drivers have the highest crash rate of any group in the u.s. facebook's ceo just wrapped up the keynote speech at the company's developer conference. efaddressed fundamental things like the stability of the facebook site protecting user's privacy and control of the content they share. stream lining their use of apps that work with facebook. but perhaps the most interesting part was a look in the future when virtual reality is integrated. >> when you think about vir of
