while spaning to a call, a man had access to a weapon. when the officers arrived on center road at 7:00 p.m. last night the officer was shot and killed. watching this procession here as they make their way to los gatos. we have seen an outpouring of support from people around the bay area, communities around the bay area, law enforcement officers showing compassion for the fallen officer. >> there hasn't been a police officer killed in the line of duty in san jose since 2011. that is when an officer was killed. side note here, he and michael johnson were in the same recruitment class. they joined the force at the same time. michael johnson has been a member of the san jose police officer for 14 years. again on his way to the funeral home in los gatos. they have the rolling closures.

we will keep an eye on this. in the meantime we want to tell you how flags are flying at half-staff for officer michael johnson. responding to a call about a suicidal armed man when he was shot and killed last night. ambushed in east san jose as he was walking up to the apartment complex. 57-year-old scott dunham shot officer michael johnson from his balcony with no warning at all. came out and fired. scott dunham was found dead on the balcony from a gun shot wound. it is not clear at this point who fired the shot. whether that was return fire from the police or whether that was a self-inflicted gun shot wound. >> devastated. oh, my god, everything is going on right here. i was scared. >> we have live team coverage. ktvu's azenith smith learned more from friends and officers.

we begin with eric rasmussen in the news room with more on the police radio calls made in the moments before he was gunned down. >> reporter: we listened to an hour of radio communication detailing what happened before, during and after the shots that killed officer johnson. police talked about scott dunham's mental history but nothing could prepare them for what he was about to do. >> reporter: tuesday evening in san jose a call stoopolice about -- to police about scott dunham alerted officers to a tense situation. [ indiscernible ]

>> reporter: other information came from his daughter, calling from out of town, as well as his wife on the scene. [ indiscernible ] [ 911 calls ] >> reporter: then as police approached officers relayed what they saw. [ indiscernible ] [ 911 calls ] >> reporter: 12 seconds later the first word officer michael johnson was shot. >> officer down. officer down. >> copy, officer down. officer down. >> reporter: minutes after that another officer also reported he might have put the suspect down in his words according to the radio communications. his wife told police the house was pull of ammunition. -- full of ammunition. 3:30 a.m. officers confirmed scott dunham was also dead. >> eric rasmussen in the news room, thank you. we are learning more about officer johnson from friends, family and fellow law enforcement officers. ktvu's azenith smith spoke to those who knew him. >> reporter: a fellow officer says it is difficult for him to comprehend his friend is gone. and difficult for this department to comprehend. you can see the flowers at this memorial here. they have not lost an officer since 2001. >> i couldn't believe it. i thought it can't be michael.

>> reporter: san jose police officers are coming to grips with the loss of fellow officer michael johnson. he considered him his friend and someone he looked up to. >> he loved being a cop. it was in his blood. >> reporter: gone in an incident after he was -- instant after he was gunned down. the 12 officer killed in san jose police department history. the last officer killed in 2001 was in the same academy class as michael johnson. >> you could tell by the way he worked and grew as a police officer in the field there wasn't anything he couldn't do. >> reporter: san jose police officers association president remembers his early years as a team player. he says the support is helping the department rebound after losing one of its own. it will take a long time for

there is new developments in the woman kidnapped. that woman was found alive hundreds of highlights away. she was discover -- miles away. she was discovered this morning. ktvu's allie rasmus spoke with the woman's father and has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police believe denise huskins was a victim of a kidnapping for ransom and that is how they are still investigating the case. her father said the last 48 hours have been emotionalmotional. >> i want to hunger hug her. i want to say it is okay, baby. >> he described his joy and relief after hearing his daughter's voice on the phone this morning, the first time he heard from denise huskins since she was reported kidnapped on monday. >> i am grateful. i can't tell you the prayers

that have been answered. >> she said daddy, i am safe. they let me go. >> reporter: denise huskins made the call from her home town of huntington beach, 400 mimes away from where she was abducted from. >> we are all tempered because there were the same questions we had before, we still have except for where is she. now we know where she is. that is the most important thing. >> the man who owns the home reported that she was taken from the house during the morning hours. he didn't report the crime till several hours later but police say he is not a suspect. >> the person that reported this is a victim at this point. >> reporter: because of the nature of the investigation there are many details he can't

clarify. he couldn't say whether a ransom note was received or whether there was one kidnapper or more. >> reporter: denise huskins' father went to the police station after our interview. he told us he wasn't sure when he would be able to see his daughter. this afternoon police say denise huskins has been reunited with her family in southern california and police investigators are making travel arrangements to speak with denise huskins in person. back to you. >> in talking to her father and her uncle, did they talk about the ransom, what they wanted and whether anything was paid here? >> reporter: when i spoke with denise huskins' father, he said police told him not to speak about specifics in the case. this is still an open investigation. when i spoke with him he said

he was talking about his creation the emotions after learning his daughter was safe -- reaction and the emotions after learning his daughter was safe. allie rasmus, ktvu fox 2 news. call for change in the oakland unified school district. this followings the beatings of two students by security guards. protesters are demanding justess for the students -- justice for the students. ktvu's noelle walker is live. >> reporter: this isn't just a matter of one beating but several that have them concerned about student safety in the place where they are supposed to feel safe. an hour and a half ago 12 protesters gathered outside before the meeting to demand the firing of security guards who beat three students as well

as the firing of principals at the schools and they want the superintendent removed. take a look at this. this is one example. one of the beatings got media attention last may after this surveillance video surfaced. a guard pushing a wheelchair bound student out of his chair, kicking him in the head and pulling him into an elevator. another angle shows him being slapped in the head and tossed out of the chair. he has been in a wheelchair most of his life for cerebral palsy is still a junior at oakland high school, he was that meeting. >> we have a lot of violence in our community. i don't think that is right for us to have to deal with it also in school. school is a safe environment where we are supposed to lose. school is supposed to be safe. >> i share the outrage of the

lawmakers. >> prolonging suffering is not the same thing as extending life. >> she was at the capital today as the senate passed a law that would give terminally ill patients the right to doctor assisted suicide. ktvu's rob roth reports, supporters made a video. >> reporter: inside the state capitol today the push is on for the right to die. >> my daughter asked nee speak up on behalf of the terminally ill. >> reporter: the mother of brittany maynard urged the senate health committee to pass a bill that would allow california doctors to prescribe end of life medication to dying patients. >> prolonging suffering is not the same thing as extending

life. my daughter knew that difference. my daughter lived that difference. >> my name is brittany maynard. i am 29 years old. i am terminally ill. >> reporter: 19 days before she died she made video that right to die advocates released today. brittany maynard who was terminally ill moved to oregon where physical assisted -- physician assisted suicide is legal. >> the decision about how i end my dying process should be up to me and my family under a doctor's care. >> reporter: it would require two doctors to confirm a prognosis of six months or less to live and the patient must be mentally competent when making the decision. >> reporter: they worry it will lead to abuse. she is an advocate for a disability rights organization. she worries people may choice suicide based on concerns of
