of the fallen officer. we begin with cara liu where a vigil wrapped up about half an hour ago. >> reporter: a few hundred people showed up for the prayer vigil. they were honoring the fallen officer and saying thank you to all the officers who serve this community. today''s vigil honored michael johnson. >> i honor you as not only a police officer but an important part of our community. >> reporter: hundreds turned out to pay their respects. >> and i hope you had the opportunity to see what i'm seeing. our diverse city coming together tonight to mourn, the slate is wiped clean.

hill here, many people double parking on the street to pay their respects. and many people asking the question why. we got insight on to why the shooter may have occurred because we spoke to members of johnson's family. >> reporter: grief comes in many forms. an apology from the niece of the man who shot and killed officer johnson. >> as a family, we feel we're caught in the middle. we're mourning for the officer but we're morning for our uncle. >> reporter: two lives that crossed paths. and a fight with his wife brought officers to johnson's home. >> my aunt does consider johnson her hero. we consider him our hero.

>> i can't forget how nice of a person he was to everyone. >> reporter: people who live in the neighborhood and officers who work beside him carry on with grace. >> it's so raw for all of us. >> reporter: united by law. >> it's incredible. i mean it's very sincere these people are here because they care. >> reporter: a community grateful for those who serve. >> seeing all these officers, it's breath breathtaking. >> reporter: in the distance, a family mourning both men. the officer who lost his life and the man who killed him. they hope for grace in the form of compassion. you're looking at the growing memorial here at the shooting scene. some of the flowers that were placed there were placed by dunham's family. they said he did receive treatment for his mental illness but in their opinion, the incident was suicide by cop. frank. >> katie what was the reaction of people there of dunham's

family showed up. was there people that were upset or were they grateful that they showed up. >> reporter: they did not really step up. they spoke to reporters after the vigil wrapped up they wanted to pay their respects but did not want to take away from the vigil. >> the service will be held at 11:00 a.m. next thursday at the sap center in san jose. a lot of people are expected to attend including police officers from all across the country. later in this newscast, san jose police say the computer system in their patrol cars crashed on the night of the shooting. the ongoing problem and how the department plans to fix it. jurors in san francisco reached a verdict late today in the closely watched aaron powell sex discrimination

lawsuit. the jury ruled in favor of perkins on all counts. ktvu's jana katsuyama is live tonight in the city where she spoke with two jurors who reached different conclusions in the case. jana. >> reporter: this was a case julie, that lasted more than a month. ellen powell in the courtroom appeared very calm after she heard the verdict from this jury that had six men and six women evenly divided. some of them said today it was a very intense and emotional process. >> ellen powell left the state courthouse in san francisco having lost her $16 million gender discrimination case but still claiming victory for raising attention working women of silican valley. >> for people across the world who have reached out to express support, and telling me that my story is theirs too. >> reporter: as chief of staff for the firm's well known

partner john doer had been her mentor but also testified that she cautioned powell about her difficulty working with others. they called the firm a boy's club. powell claims she outperformed male comments, was asked to take notes like a secretary and treated unfairly after an affair with a married male colleague. >> then the battle was worth it. >> reporter: attorneys for perkins say performance reviews, showed powell had conflicts and they pointed to other female employees who succeeded and did not have complaints. >> it never occurred to me for a second that a careful and attentive jury like this would find either discrimination or retaliation. >> reporter: the jury voted 9-3 against powell's retaliation charge after one juror switched his vote at the last minute forcing the jury to reconvene

for another hour. the jury voted 10-2 against powell's gender discrimination claim. >> the performance evaluations throughout the years were a key piece. >> reporter: ramsey voted yes with powell. >> it seems that the those with male gender with the same flaws that perkins did were able to sad vance -- powell did were able to advance. the family of audrey pot is going to get hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result of their wrongful death lawsuit. pot was a student at seratoga high she committed suicide after being sexually assaulted. photos of her were then circulated on social media. the family of one of three boys involved in the attack will pay

$600,000 and the owner of the home where the assault happened will pay $100,000. a protest is held tonight against the downtown berkeley association and its hospitality ambassadors who patrol the street. about 1,000 people marched to the police department. tonight's demonstration stems from this you tube video. it shows one of the ambassadors punching a homeless man last sunday. the homeless and their advocates say that attack is a culmination of something much greater. a lot of things have been going on in the city that are anti homeless. and people don't have a place to stay. so they stay downtown so they can get services and they stay downtown so they can get a little extra cash. a booming bay area economy

is issuing a fast increase in the region. santa clara, contra costa, san francisco and san mateo counties also saw some of the fastest population growth since 2010. their census bureau reports that alameda county has added 100,000 residents since june of 2010. santa clara also added about 100,000. more people of course means more jobs, more traffic and a tighter housing market and that can be seen in the skyrocketing rents across the bay area. governor jerry brown put his signature on a million dollars emergency drought package today. he tweeted a picture showing him signing the bill and said it is a piece of a much greater effort to help those affected by the extreme drought. the package was passed quickly by the state assembly and the senate this week. the package fast track spending on water infrastructure package designed to deal with the drought and floods when it rains too much. other money will go to help communities that have little or no valley in the central

there is growing backlash from leaders from indiana. a lot of people here in the bay area are calling it nothing more than legalized discrimination against gays and lesbians. noelle walker reports on the backlash. >> reporter: this at a time when all eyes will be focused on indiana for the final four of march madness. >> reporter: lieu cal oil stadium in -- lucas oil stadium in indianapolis, the final four is not the only thing taking place in indiana this week. >> this bill is not about

race, immigration status, long hair. anything. >> reporter: we saw that san francisco is taking a stand. what else can san francisco do. >> the supervisor thinks to think at some point in the near future there's a resolution that can be passed by the entire city council and that will also make another powerful statement. >> thank you, noelle. at ktvu.com we have posted many of the tweets from today about that indiana law. you can look for the story right on our front page. >> police in vallejo still haven't responded to a couple of bay area attorneys who now insist their clients were victims of a kidnapping for ransom this week. police say there is no evidence that 29-year-old denise hopkins was kidnapped. police say the kidnap claim was orchestrated but huskins attorney says police have it all wrong. huskins turned up unharmed near her home in huntington.

a teacher accused of molesting his students was sentenced today to 12 years in prison. cristina rendon heard from the mother of two of those students and martin's wife about what the sentence means for her kids. >> reporter: elementary teacher joseph martin learned his fate. four years in prison for molesting students. >> at the same time he's got two little girls, and set for release when they're in high school. he would be a friend not a dad to them and that's heartbreaking. >> reporter: before the ruling the judge received more than 20 letters of support more -- support for martin. but also recognizes the damage he did to those victims. >> happy that he won't be able to victimize children anymore. he'll be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life. >> reporter: the court struck down a 25 years to life in

prison calling the outcome cruel and unusual. >> punishment to life does not institute cruel and unusual punishment. harsh, definitely. what he did was harsh. >> reporter: the judge told the boys they did the right thing. and told martin that she was happy he will not be able to teach again. >> i will always stand by my husband's innocence. i believe he was wrongfully convicted. >> reporter: martin is likely eligible for parol in about nine years. reporting in contra costa county, cristina rendon. there are new signs of west nile activity in santa clara county after three birds tested positive for the virus.

church in duesseldorf germany held a vigil. also today more disturbing information is coming to life about a young co-pilot who investigators say deliberately crashed the jetliner. prosecutors say doctors notes were found at his home stating he was too ill to work. as ktvu's gasia mikaelian reports, he kept his health issues hidden from his employer. >> reporter: authorities found ripped up doctor's notes even on the day of the flight. >> we're hoping for clues regarding this man's motive. >> reporter: germanwings said they never saw the sick notes.

this hospital confirms they saw him twice before the crash, they reportedly say not for depression. they did not find any confession or political or religious motivation for the incident. none of this is helping families of the victim coming to grips with their grief. some gathered around a makeshift memorial. some getting as close to the sight as they can. among those remembering the life of one of those victims the father of 37-year-old american robert oliver calvo. >> instead of focusing our minds and hearts on that last, on those last nine or 10 minutes, we prefer to think of those 33 years we spent together. we shared our lives, our experiences, our fellowship. >> reporter: lufthansa is saying they will offer 30,000 euros in immediate financial assistance to the families of all those who died in the

crash. many have come a long way and have a long way before the remains of their loved ones are identified. gasia mikaelian, ktvu news. the crash in europe has led to questions about how the u.s. handles pilots and their mental health. pilots younger than 40 must get a mental evaluation every year. and those four or older every six months. there's warning for depression such as not sleeping well and changes in eating habits. we are following developing news right now after the break, a deadly accident involving a pedestrian in contra costa county. and a computer outage moments before a police officer was killed. the reoccurring problem officers say continue to put them at risk.

we have developing news out of martinez tonight where police are on the scene of a deadly crash involving a car and a pedestrian. this is a live picture from morello avenue and highway 4. martinez police say this happened before 9:00. according to a photographer on the scene, preliminary word is that a car was exiting h ighway four possibly going too fast when it hit a pedestrian and ended up on a median. we asked police how the accident happened and we're still waiting for answers. right now morello is still closed on i4. a patrol officer 's

computer crashed shortly after officer michael johnson was shot. >> reporter: adding to the chaos, the computer network crashing within an hour after officers responded to the crisis. >> unfactory for us to have a problem. but we are looking at ways we've known about the issues and we are working on rectifies those issues and those problems. this afternoon, the san jose police department acknowledged it crashed because they could not handle the number of officers working that night. they admit the department has outgrown the technology. it's an issue going on for at least a year. >> our officers are incredibly frustrated with the computers not working in their cars because it's a critical piece of our safety equipment. >> reporter: ktvu obtained an

internal memo sent to police details concern. and the communication speed was slow. we don't get information to officers as quickly as we would like to because it's a safety issue. quite frankly it's a safety issue. >> the just approved city budget method for this year allocates funding for the police chief's needs. this being one of them. >> the funding we identified would be enough to retrofit, with the mobile computer devices. and the budget office and our office is then communicating. >> reporter: and the department hopes to replace all the computers by the end of the year. until then, if and when the system crashes they'll have to rely on the radio dispatch. in san jose, i'm azenith smith, ktvu news. in san francisco they are

hoping extra security will help stop vandalism and littering at dolores park. the city's rec department says there will be four staff members at the park tomorrow and six on sunday. this after several vandals caused damage. and last month someone drinking in the park smashed glass bottles in the sand box causing it to close. they also plan to have staff over the weekend to empty trash cans. amanda knox's family says they're relieved. knox is seen on this video was facing 26-1/2 years in prison. her former boyfriend who was also convicted was facing a 25 year sentence. but the high court said the evidence did not -- a russian rocket carried

new at 10:00, a protest against the planned expansion of the oakland zoo. about two dozen people gathered today in the oakland hills. they say they're upset about plans to use more of the park for a science and education exhibit. they say the development will harm native plans and disrupt the habitat of threatened species such as the alameda snake. >> it's a great irony and real tragedy to take over what is

real and wild and rare to talk about preserving what is weird and wild and rare. >> the plans around the new exhibit is designed to be wildlife friendly. a caltrans crew that was clearing debris. the worker was using a skip loader to tear down a tent and remove debris from an encampment on story road. we're told a woman was in the tent. people in the camp had been warned about the clean up but for some reason she didn't leave. fortunately we're told that the woman's injuries are only minor. contra costa health officials are investigating a chemical relief in pittsburg. the company says workers were mixing 3,000 pounds of chemicals when it reacted.

fish and wildlife crews are now investigating whether there was any impact there. harry reid surprised many by announcing he will not run for reelection. >> we have to be more concerned about the country, the senate and us. for that reason i'm not going to run for reelection. >> reid says he wants charles schumer to succeed him. after closing lower for four straight days wall street ended the week with slight gains. the dow was up seven. the s & p500 added four.

said i'm going to do it. >> reporter: gonzalez impressed the girl and his classmates. >> nothing happens at this school. so when someone showed up with a horse, it was exciting. >> reporter: miguel called his friend who had a ranch near by and asked him if he could borrow a horse. he had an idea to ride to school and ask his good friend catalina hernandez to prom. she said yes but the school said no. they suspended him and gave him community service. >> i didn't think it was a big deal. it was hardly any people there. just her classroom. there was another classroom but that was about it. >> reporter: gonzalez says he's been around horses all his life and there was never really any changes. >> this kid is a nice kid. he plays sports, he's a good kid. and he comes here to help. i think they went too far. >> reporter: the school sited possible danger of having a

horse on campus. the principal told us on campus that she wished miguel would have talked to her first. >> this is something i probably won't regret. i'll just be like yeah, i did it. that's not the real reason why i did it. just the story that i went on campus with a horse and asked a girl would you go to prom with me. i was honestly i would have done it for any girl that would have went with me. >> reporter: the good news is even though the suspension remains he will be able to go to prom. miguel who's never been in trouble before says he would probably do it again but ask for permission first. big wave surfers will have to wait another year. the three week window closes next tuesday. the weather forecast is offering no hope for the surf that's needed. it didn't generate the 40 to 60- foot waves that are necessary

for the contest. cancellations are fairly common since the contests first began in 1999 there have been eight winters when the surf didn't cooperate. it's important to get everything lined up. but always great to see those pictures. the rain not here in the bay area. you have to look to the north to the pacific northwest. you see the rain drops up here but that's about it. there's a weakening system that will thráeufr a few clouds. that's just about it. right now we have some patchy low clouds. some locally dense fog has been a constant coast side all day long pushing back into the bay right now. current numbers are in the 50s. livermore 57-degree. san jose 58. san francisco 55. and san jose in the upper 50s. winds up as well. you can see winds an on shore breeze. winds from 10 to 15 miles per hour. still a bit of a breeze out toward sfo.

winds out of the west at 14 miles per hour. our cameras looking toward oakland. we had partly cloudy skies right now. low clouds will be on the increase some what overnight. this weekend we will have this. morning fog and fair clouds. the extended forecast, a sun cloud mix with minor cooling out there. but no big changes in the temperature department. here's the view for the forecast in the south bay for san jose. patchy morning fog with lots of sunshine for the afternoon hours. temperatures on track to reach to a steadily climb back up into the upper 70s for tomorrow afternoon. very weak system up here. i drew in a cold front because i like to draw the cold front. no rain, the chances for us just partly to mostly sunny skies for the afternoon hours. once this moves out, winds do pick up from 10 to 20 miles per hour. this is a familiar weather pattern. high pressure rebuilds just a little bit. so sunday a temperature up a few degrees. once again, that's the key
