like grapes, bananas and apples and things like that. >> this is the breakfast they're going for this morning. >> that's right. they're getting their first meal of the day, three meals today. >> look, there's one with the baby. >> they're very excited. this is a young breeding group. you can see they've got fun enrichment here, you know baboons in the wild have to work to get their food, we like to give them an opportunity to do similar things in the zoo and that's a fun enrichment for you. >> the keepers are hands off when it comes to feeding the animals. >> we don't share space with these animals. even though they're cool animals, they're still wild animals and they can be very dog russ. i made sure to put all the food out first and then we let the baboons out when i'm out of the exhibit. >> the feast for the beasts, they come and bring the produce with them.

clouds are not as widespread, we have patches inside the bay and we've got clearer skies in many areas. so, 45 degrees in nap that and 42 in santa rosa, a 47 degrees in redwood city, 51 in san jose. we'll look at a few more numbers here. pittsburgh 56, 56 in alamo, look at the numbers that were expected yesterday. yesterday going up 55 degrees, it's a cool day in san francisco, yesterday a big drop from the day before. concord you'll be slightly warmer and san jose expected to climb 8 degrees, so a bit of a warmup for the bay area for the second half of our day and going warmer for tomorrow. i'll have the detail for the numbers for your neighborhood and show you the extended forecast numbers coming up. an outdated computer system after the fatal shooting of

officer johnson on tuesday night. they couldn't handle the computer traffic for all the officers working that night. this is not the first time they've had problems with a computer system. they've said it's an issue for at least a year. >> our officer are incredibly frustrated with the computers not working in their cars because it's a critical piece of our safety equipment. the department is planning on upgrading the wireless technology and replacing the computers in the patrol cars until the end of the year. officers will have to rely on radio dispatch. emotions are high after a homeless man was punched by a hospitality ambassador. this shows one of the ambassadors you can see dressed in that greenish yellow shirt punched a homeless man last

monday. they passed a plan about behavior in public like you're naturing in public and pan handling. a crash happened at highway 4, and it happened on mir road, the man who died is yet to be identified. person who was driving the car and hut the man stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigators. alcohol is not a factor. anyone who saw that crash is asked it call police. there is a new law in the state of indiana. it allows businesses to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers. they call it nothing more than discrimination against gay and

exhibit, and nico this gibbon has been hamming for the camera we get close to where he is. there's this maot that separates us. he's the social one. >> what a gibbon exactly? >> they're lesser apes. they're part of the ape family. they come from southeast asia and they're one of the few primates that are monogamous. they have a single mate that they stay with all their lives. >> his partner is shy? >> she is more shy than he is. she's the blond one, gibbons have quite a wide range of colors in their hair patterns like humans do. >> the feast for the events that you have, people can come in and bring donated produce and it will go to all the herbivores here at the zoo.

what kind of produce do gibbons like? >> they love grapes, sweet potatoes, bananas. >> we have a lot of good stuff with them. >> we do. we give them a variety. we wouldn't normally be able to purchase. it's expensive or seasonal and stuff like that. >> with someone bringing in produce, all the animals will get a chance to have some? >> exactly, the more you bring in the more the animals it gets to go to. >> this is nico and gladys, they share. >> we have got kiwi and celery. >> and nico's favorite is sweet potatoes. >> yes. >> you can bring that and more for feast for the beasts, we have a list of the recommended

suitable to place in a home, they're euthanized. >> many have large intake numbers and diminished capacity, they're is little choice -- there is little choice. >> that's a position that people have been put in, when you have a healthy animal they're euthanized. >> they're looking at that problem in a brand-new way. it's called a million cat challenge. it's between davis and the university of florida, two of the most largest medicine cat shelters programs in the world. >> there's 30 million strays in the united states. they've been euthanizing 1 pout 5 million a year. we weren't even touching the iceberg of that problem. >> a few years ago it started

as a thousand cats. >> the goal was to euthanized 1,000 cats. >> and they euthanized 1300 less. >> it be doesn't mean turning around cats. that's the big realization they had. >> it means getting community members and gropes into rehoming. instead of euthanizing -- and sometimes release them back where they were found. >> it also challenges shelters to look at care in a new way. >> it used to be there was a cat in every single one of these cages, but now with portals, one cat gets three. >> three cages for one cat. >> exactly. >> and with using three cages for one cat, more than nine out of ten cats are leaving the shelter alive where fewer than five were leaving when each cat

volt. this man may have been involved in two other incidents near ten son high school. there will be a memorial service this weekend for two men killed last week, in a west oakland fire. services will be held for davis at the chapel of the chimes at piedmont avenue in oakland. a memorial for a 36-year-old artist, daniel thomas is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. there are two people missing from an explosion that leveled three new york apartments buildings on wednesday in manhattan. 22 people were hurt as well as several firefighters. it will take time, the mayor deblasio said, before the area is cleaned up. >> it will take several days, possibly as much as a week to get all of that debris out of the area and make the area

afternoon. a weak system moving through further north bringing us again this change in our weather pattern for today. we have 60s along the coast. a lot of 70s out there today and a few pockets expected to hit about 80 degrees. i will have a look at the afternoon highs and a warming trend that will continue for part of the weekend coming up. the oakland zoo is holding a special event where guests can bring in their favorite fruits and vegetables to donate to the animals. it is called "feast for the beasts." >> yes. alex savage has a look -- allie rasmus has a look at what is going on. what do you have for us? >> reporter: the elephants aren't in here with us here at the oakland zoo, but they are behind us. this is 21-year-old osh. a little later on he and the other elephants here will get a special treat. let's turn the camera around and show you what they are in

for. this is "feast for the beasts." it is a chance for people to donate produce for all the animals at the zoo, not just the elephants. what do you have here? >> this is a snack. this is a twice a year event we are able to put on. it is a chance for members of our zoo to come here and really be a part of something special and to be able to bring them store bought produce, put it out on this exhibit and just really be one with kind of the animals and zoo and the facility. >> reporter: so, the first 250 people who come and bring produce will get to stand where we are. where can they put the fruit? anywhere? >> everywhere. we encourage it. there are three-and-a-half acres up here. we encourage the people to put them all over the rocks. under the dirt. up in the grass. just everywhere. it is a really fun event to have and be a part of thesa. >> reporter: are elephants use

to foraging for food. is this a new challenge for them? the fruit everywhere is probably not hard for them to find but it is a different activity for them. >> exactly. we encourage the foraging. it is one of the healthiest things we can do for the animals, animals in general at the zoo. putting the food out, having the elephants get exercise and have amazing treats like pineapples and watermelons -- they eat these pineapples whole? >> they break the stem off, throw that away and eat the succulent pineapple. they love it! >> reporter: i have seen them bite into the these food items like they are nothing. >> whole. the juices will fall out but it will be gone. you will not see it again. >> reporter: well, a nice treat for the elephants and people that come out here and put the food out and watch the

investigators say a 16-year- old girl told police she was walking home from hayward high school yesterday when a man grabbed her and pulled her into his car. she was able to fight the man off. he is described as latino or east indian. he is thinly built and has short, dark colored air and was driving a prius or chevy bolt. the man may have been involved in two other incidents and police are investigating. hundreds of people gathered in san jose to remember and honor police officer michael johnson. >> i honor you. not only as a police officer, but as an important part of our community. >> a prayer individual was held at city hall -- prayer vigil was held at city hall on tuesday night for the offer. he was shot and killed after be responding to a call about a suicidal man.

it appears he had been hiding his illness and did not tell the airline he had been excused by a doctor from work on the day of the flight. we learned he was no stranger to the crash site and frequently went to a gliding club in that area. search and rescue crews continue to investigate the crash and collect the remains of the 150 people who died. >> instead of focusing our minds and hearts on that last -- those last nine or ten minutes, we prefer to think about those 37 years that we have been together. >> three americans were killd in the crash. lufthansa, the parent company of germanwings says it will offer an estimated $55,000 in immediate financial assistance to the families of all those who died in the crash. . and a memorial service was held at a church in german yesterday to pay tribute to the victims. 71 of the 150 people on board

were german citizens. starting next month bart will close the tracks between the fruitevale and coliseum bart stations on saturdays and sundays. repair work on the tracks will be done over several weekends between april and august. a free bus service will be operating between the two transits when the bart system is closed but could cause delays of 350 to 60 minutes for some bart riders. here is a live look at the golden gate bridge. from 8:30 to 9:30 tonight the decorative lights on the upper portion of the bridge will be turned off. it will commemorate earth hour. it startd in sydney, australia. it is designed to bring more attention to climate change. this year 7,000 cities and towns in 172 countries are participating. if you want to participate all you have to do is turn off your own lights at home at 8:30 tonight. bad news for big wave

prosecutors say steared a commercial airliner into a french mountain, killing everyone on board. investigators found a letter in thinks apartment saying he wasn't fit to do his job. some newspapers are saying he suffer from the mental illness and kept his diagnosis a secret from his employer. three american were killd in the crash. and two men were killed last week in an oakland fire and service will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at the chapel of the chimes on piedmont avenue in oakland. and daniel thomas' funeral service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. and hundreds of people gatherd in san jose to remember and honor police officer michael johnson. a vigil was held for officer johnson last night. police in san jose are blaming an outdated computer system for disrunning mating communications after the fatal shooting of officer michael johnson on tuesday night.

the department on the network count handle the computer -- couldn't handle all the computer traffic being generated tuesday night. this isn't the first time the department had a problem with the system and says it has been an issue for at least a year. >> our officers are incredibly frustrated with the computers not working in their cars because it is a critical piece of safety equipment. >> the department is planning on upgrading the wireless technology and replacing all computers in patrol cars by the end of the year. until then if the system crash, officers will have to rely on radio dispatch. >> thank you, claudine. rosemary, it is the last weekend of march. >> say it isn't so. >> yes. flying right by. we have little league games, birthday parties, and great weather our way. >> yes. if you like 70s and mostly sunny skies, this will be right up your alley. a few high clouds moving

sunday. i will have a look at the numbers for you, coming up. . governor jerry brown signed a $1 billion bill that will offer help to people hurt by the state's drought. it will mainly expedite spending on water infrastructure. about $660 million will go to flood protection structures to prevent mud slides and storms from overtaking communities. in 2006 after hurricane katrina and $300 million will fund grants for water recycling programs since then. and speaking of droughts, the california snow packs have reached a historic low, the driest pack readings in 65 years, 19% of average for the march survey. the next survey will be held from april 1st and the california department of resources won't find much snow

children. well, we have more now live at the oakland zoo with allie rasmus. we have you inside there with a look at the elephant manager. the table is full of stuff! >> reporter: yes. a lot of volunteers! hundreds of pounds of food. this is who it is going to. this is osh, an african elephant here at the zoo. he and the other elephants here will get a feast of fresh produce, fruits and vegetables of all kinds. at 9:00 when we showed you osh, she was a little further away but the zoo keeper says they can actually smell all the produce so he is getting a little closer. at 10:30 they will get a chance to sample all these treats. their favorites are the melons, watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew, i mean, who doesn't love melon!

the way feast for the beasts work, when people come in they donate produce and the volunteers check out the produce, load it up in tubs, bring it out here and for the first 250 people that donated the produce, they get to come in the elephant exhibit and pick up one of these buckets and set out the produce for the elephants. they have zucchini, pears, green beans, lettuce, apples. we will show you there, you can see all the people anxiously waiting to get in. let's set the food out for the elephants! the zoo manager here this morning, jeff kingsly, a lot of activity here this morning. >> hi! >> what do the elephants like the most? >> the melons. the melon, the pineapple, the bananas, the super sweet fruits. you will see when the elephants

come up, every elephant will go and find their melon. they will pass up some of the carrots, potatoes and find a melon. >> reporter: and you don't even have to chop up the melon. they bite into them? >> they prefer it not chopped up. they want to put the whole thing in their mouth and bite down. >> reporter: you know the elephants pretty well. you are the elephant manager. you say they know this day is coming and they look forward to it? >> they absolutely know this day. it is the one time they run town the exhibit. they know it is out here. they know the food is out here. they with smell it. we have osh in the background. he is waiting! >> reporter: right. ten minutes ago he was up at the gate and he had this look in his eye like let me on it. >> any time you want to up up that gate and let him in he will be happy. they love it! it is like a treat for them. it is like christmas and they

can't wait for it! >> reporter: it is fun for the elephants and the people coming out here to lay out all the food for the elephants. you can see they have a couple dozen buckets already out here. the elephants will get fed at 10:30 this morning but the zoo is accepting produce donations throughout the day. you can still come down here to the zoo and bring a bag of apples, celery, cantaloupe, you name it, they probably like it. the only thing i have heard the elephants don't like as much are the lemons, a little to acetic and citrusy. but otherwise, bring it on! >> you put it in your water. you and i don't chomp into a lemon. >> i used to, back in the day when i was 7 or 8 years old, but that was another story. allie, have a great morning at the zoo! >> oh, my gosh. >> i know. what are you going to do?

9:39. let's talk cats now. this story is about changing the way animal shelter does business, and by doing that, saving the lives of a million cats. that is the challenge and organizers say it is already working. i talked to one of the founders of the million cat challenge and she tells me why it is one of the most inspiring initiatives she has ever been a part of. >> willow is a stray. >> reporter: this is willow. she was recently brought to the yolo county animal services. she is healthy, but there is a problem. >> it says she failed for adoption so she can't be adopted out. normally what would have happened to her? >> in shelters across north america, when a cat behavioral isn't well enough to bring into

a home they are youth niced. it is horrible having to euthanize animals. it has been looked at now for so long. >> this million cat challenge, a joint project by uc davis and the university of florida, two of the most widely recognized shelter medicine programs in the world. >> here is the reality. we have a stray cat problem. there is an estimated 30 million to 80 million stray outdoor cats, unowned cats in the united states. shelters have been euthanizing them at an estimated 1.5 million a year. even with all the euthanasia, we weren't even touching the tip of the iceburg of the problem. >> reporter: a few years ago it started as a thousand cat challenge. >> the goal was to euthanize a thousand fewer cats over the first six months of the year and they euthanized over 1,300 fewer cats, so we knew it could work. >> what are can changes?

>> controlling admission, getting community members and groups involved in re-homing, and instead of euthanasia -- . >> instead, we spay and neuter the cat. >> and sometimes release them back where they were found. >> she is lounging. >> it also challenges shelters to look at care in a new way. >> there used to be cats in every single one of these cages. >> but now with portals, one cat gets three. >> we have three cages for one cat and more than nine out of ten cats are leaving the shelter alive, when fewer than one out of five were leaving when each cat was cramd in a small cage. >> that is because the cads are healthier, happier, and thus, easier the adopt. >> the most inspiring, exciting initiativive ever been part of. >> it has now become a five year, million cat challenge.

>> we started in november. by the beginning of 2015 we were already over 125,000 more lives saved at just about 200 participating shelters. >> reporter: and cats like willow are benefiting. so, this cat right here is ready for release. that is the million cat challenge? >> that is one part of the million cat challenge. >> reporter: she will likely be released to a barn instead of a home, but she won't be put down. it is one more life saved. >> she is our great statistic. she is part of the million. >> reporter: so far the lives of more than 128,000 cats have been saved as part of the challenge. >> a big number. >> yes. >> it will only get bugler yes. people who would normally -- it will only get bigger. >> yes. people who would normally put down a cat will not have to. it is the second tallest building in san francisco and the fourth tall nest the state. up next we will check in with

. all right. check it out. hundreds of people taking part in the fight for air climb this morning. this is the 555 formally known bank of america building. >> it is a big one. that building has been there for a long time. it is always an impressive

sight that you can see all around the bay area. ktvu heather holmes joined the crowd and made her way up 52 flights of stairs. we talked to her just after it began. >> you look too good for having climb that had whole building! >> reporter: are you kidding me! that, folks, is what i just climbed up. 52 flights. i have to say, when you get to the top, oh, man, the view is amazing. really, really cool this year! i was in the same wave this year as the hillsboro fire department. you look behind you and there are firefighters in gear. i ask them how much it weighs and they say 40-pounds. the guys and girl it's actually beat me. i don't know what that says. it was so much fun. this is for the lung association. this is about being able to breathe. this is to help the lung association continue its work to help fight lung cancer, to help with lung cancer research.

so, we are really, really working with a great cause. i don't know if you can see behind me, but there are folks that will be going on the next wave. they have them about every 15 minutes. they have had over 100 people participating and raised over $300,000 this year. mission accomplished for myself and a lot of folks this morning feeling good. i am heading back to the top to take in the views. >> are you going to walk again or take the elevator? >> reporter: absolutely. you mean today? no, impressing the elevator button up to 52, baby! >> maybe next year you will put the turnouts on and you can go up all the way to the top with the turnouts. >> reporter: the firefighters asked me and i respectfully declined!
