happening now, thousands of people are making their way through the streets of san francisco. we're going to take you to the start of this year's rock 'n' roll half-marathon. "mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. looking at the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza. the half-marathon underway and sunrise officially underway here in the bay area. welcome to "mornings on 2", sunday, march 29th. i'm mike mibach [i'm claudine

wong. let's start with a quick look at the weather. rosemary, it was a little chilly this morning but i thought it's going to warm up. >> it's going to be warmer than yesterday and one of the warmest days of the week because we begin a cooling trend tomorrow. let's again talk about today. the sun is up and shining. we have just a few patches of fog. overlooking the bay towards the east there you can see here comes the sun. a finger of fog over the bay this morning. temperatures a cool one, we've not low 40s to low 50s. 4141 santa rosa. napa, 38 degrees. one of the chillier spots. even slipping into the 30s for some of us over parts of the north bay. the peninsula, upper 40s in foster city, 40 woodside. 44 palo alto. shifting farther south, 48 morgan hill. 47 in sunnyvale.

saratoga reporting 46. as we get into the afternoon temperatures are coming up. low 80s in the forecast for inland communities. 83 livermore today. 83 antioch. 81 napa as well as santa rosa. around the bay, 75 hayward, 73 san francisco. the peninsula, we've got 77 redwood city, 79 in san jose. going to be a gorgeous day by the coast as well. pacifica looking at 70 degrees. low 70s for areas like half- moon bay. mid to upper 70s to areas around santa cruz. the workweek, temperatures will cool down. i'll line those up for you in the extended coming up. a person who was walking along i-580 has died after being hit by a vehicle. police say they are still looking for the driver. it happened just after midnight on eastbound 580 at the san leandro/hayward border near

150th avenue. chp shut down all the lanes while they investigated the crash. the lanes have since reopened. so far no word as to why the person was walking on the highway. we're learning new developments about yesterday's deadly motorcycle crash in sonoma county. it happened on objection dental road west of santa rosa. the driver of a white subaru outback crossed into the path of a motorcyclist. the motorcycle driver died, his passenger and the passenger in the subaru were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. the subaru passenger has been identified as singer norman greenbaum. >> greenbaum wrote and recorded "spirit in the sky" in 1969. it was his best known song. he's 72 years old and lived in sonoma county for many years. bad weather in eastern canada is considered a likely factor in a plane accident that injured dozens of people this

morning. an aircanada flight from toronto to halifax, nova scotia ended with what officials called an abrupt landing, causing the plane to skid off the runway. 25 people went to the hospital. all injuries are considered minor. power at the airport was knocked out briefly but airport operations are expected to be back to normal this morning. we are learning more about the co-pilot who intentionally crashed a passenger yet into the french alps last tuesday. a french tv station said andreas lubitz had been with his girlfriend for seven years, they were planning to get married next year but the day before the crash she decided to end the relationship. a german tabloid is also reporting another ex- girlfriend claims lubitz used to have nightmares about crashing and said one day he would do something that would make the world remember his name. there are reports he may have been getting treatment for an eye condition that could have ended his career. an international team of investigators continues to look for a motive in that crash that killed him and 149 others. but the father of a british

crash victim says he wants authorities to focus on preventing other tragedies. >> if there was a motive or reason we do not want to hear it. it's not relevant. what is relevant is this should never happen again. >> that father also went on to say he felt the support of so many people during this difficult time especially the people in the town near the crash site. he hopes one day people will remember it only as a beautiful place and not as the scene of a horrible plane crash. that town held a memorial service led by a catholic bishop. organizers say they hope the families of the crew and passengers on board the germanwings flight find solace knowing the world is praying for them. 200 people attended though it's not clear how many were relatives of the victims. right now nearly 10,000 people are making their way through the streets of san francisco for this year's rock 'n' roll half-marathon. want to show you a look at the

map, 13.1 mile course started 30 minutes ago at the great highway. runners will probably go from the great highway and make their way through the presidio across the golden gate bring before ending at civic center plaza where there's a big party. here's the midway point through the race. there's the golden gate bridge. four lanes are closed to accommodate runners. allie was at the start line when runners took off and has a look at their journey ahead. >> three, two, one! >> reporter: we're at the start of the san francisco rock 'n' roll half-marathon at ocean beach. great highway and fulton. these are some of the 8,000 runners taking part in the half marathon, 5k and also a 10k. on the half marathon course the 13-mile course takes runners down the great highway to presidio and also they get to run across the golden gate bridge. there are some competitive

runners in this race of course but a lot of the people come here for the atmosphere. the race route also has stations where there are concerts and the runners end up at civic center plaza with a performance by the band american authors. there are competitive runners but a lot of people come for the fun of it. here's how the race organizer explains it. >> i think it's a good way to approach the race. it's not a fast course. it's a gorgeous beautiful course in san francisco. >> reporter: as you can expect there are going to be some road closures in the city because of this. the great highway from lincoln to balboa is going to be shut down until 9:00. also the two northbound lanes of the golden gate bridge will also be closed. the runners again will end the race at civic center plaza where there's going to be a concert. we're going to stick with the runners and the race throughout the morning and there's 8,000 people taking part in the half marathon, 5k and 10k and some incredible stories here. later this morning we're going to introduce you to a man who

is -- lost 95% of his vision and is taking part in this. we also had a chance to speak with former 49ers running back roger craig. i asked him which sport he prefers and which he loves more, football or track. we'll tell you his answer and some of the other stories a little later on this morning. new this morning, today's palm sunday which is the start of the solemn holy week for christians around the world. >> pope francis led mass in st. peter's square, paid tribute to those killed for their faith. crowds also gathered in jerusalem's church of the holier accept you will ker, believed to be the site of jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. it's the night wrestling fans have been waiting for. >> this is wrestle mania.

match in person. paul chambers, ktvu fox 2 news. last night former governor arnold schwarzenegger was inducted into the celebrity wing of the wwe hall of fame. this video was posted by the wwe on twitter of him attending that ceremony. he's a notable pro wrestling fan attending many events since the 1970s. millions of people around the world and here in the bay area turn off their lights for an hour last night to observe earth hour. here's a look at the san francisco transamerica pyramid as the lights went off just before 8:30. the bay bridge and golden gate bridge did their part by turning off their optional lights for the hour. the event is considered the largest collective environmental action in the world. chalk up another one for golden state. the warriors won nine games in a row and this last win was a big one tied to playoff implications and longstanding record. >> it is being described as complete chaos that ended with seven college students being

n♪ i'm walking on sunshine♪ >> thank you for joining us on this sunday morning. live look from san rafael where the sun is up and shining. a cool start there this morning. 49 degrees. we want to take you now to florida. the sheriff of bay county where panama city beach is located is very frustrated. he says spring breakers there "no respect for themselves, for others and most of all for authority." that comes after seven students were shot during a party. this morning a 22-year-old alabama man is in jail. he's been charged with attempted murder. police say he opened fire at a party, most of the party goers

were students from alabama a & m university. arriving deputies called the scene complete chaos. >> it is complete chaos here. we have 100 witnesses or so. we're trying to separate, trying to interview. we have a mess. >> victims were found inside the home and outside laying on the street. investigators are expected to remain at that scene this morning. here's a look at some of the top stories making the front page on newspapers across the nation. here at home we take you to the front page of today's "oakland tribune "requesting, >> it focuses on san jose police officer michael johnson killed in the line of duty and his academy class who police officers association calls the closest-knit group of officers in the department. >> as you see here the headline reads "an unfortunate bond." the academy class of 2001 has lost two officers in the line of duty. classmate jeffrey fontana was killed during a traffic stop just weeks after graduation. >> now they lost officer johnson. according to the tribune there

are only 19 members of that 35- member class still at san jose police department but johnson's death brought them all back together. >> they grieve as does this community. this thursday a public memorial for officer johnson is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. the service will be held at the s.a.t. center in san jose. let's go to southern california. the front page of the "l.a. times" raising the issue of rail safety once again. >> it follows a commuter rail accident yesterday right in front of the university of southern california. the conductor of the train was critically injured, 20 others hurt after a car crashed into the train. >> two of the train's cars went off the tracks, the driver of the vehicle was a usc student. the crash is now bringing up a decades-long debate about whether more safety measures are needed for our los angeles county's growing rail network. >> we've had some incidents, i can't speculate on the number but whenever you have a train that runs that grade at

intersections and the human element is involved you can anticipate sometimes accidents occurring. >> the mta is planning to look at video as parts of its investigation. yesterday's crash is the 18th in the last 12 months between metro trains and cars. the drought continues to be a big story in california. this is the front page of the sacramentoby and it's talking about hydropower. the headline reads drought dries up the state's hydropower resources. according to the bee the lack of water has brought hydroturbines in california to just a crawl. production down 60% when you compare 2011 to 2014. is -- into that means utility companies get more energy from more expensive sources. that means we pay more. >> you know what we need rosemary? >> rain. we do need the rain, unfortunately not going to see it in the extended forecast.

outside our doors for today temperatures will peak, unseize that thattably warm weather conditions, mostly deer skies and the sun shining upon us. sun rose 7:00 this morning and we'll have 12 1/2 hours of daylight for sunday. we have clear skies. high clouds are pulling in just to the north edge of sonoma county. that is going to be about it. just those high clouds passing through at times, a little patchy fog this morning. but nothing really to cause you any trouble if you have an early morning drive. ridge of high pressure shifting just a little bit. you can see the rain line still well to the north of us. it's going to begin to shift a little as we yet into the business week. unfortunately no rain in our extended forecast but it's going to add to a cooldown. i'll show you as we get through your sunday we have mostly clear skies in store for today. a beautiful day in store with temperatures back into the 70s. even a few low 80s for many of us. in to monday morning we start out with mostly clear skies, maybe a little patchy fog along the coastline. as we get into the afternoon

the onshore breeze begins to come back. you can see by the evening hours the fog up against the coastline and we have a line of rain beginning to enter the northwest corner of california. not going to sink into the bay area. but this is a sign of the things to come in the way of a cooldown. so today going to be the warmest day, 38 degrees now in napa. different story in napa. 38, a cold start for you. 49 oakland, 51 concord. palo alto 46 and freemont 50. for the afternoon we go to 81 in novato. 81 napa. 79 for san rafael. low 70s sausalito. we've got 79 oakland, low 80s for danville, livermore 83. and 83 antioch. as we shift into the south bay more of the same. even 84 in the forecast this afternoon for gilroy. 80 for saratoga. 79 santa clara. 76 in santa cruz with mostly sunny skies. for the peninsula, you'll go to 76 palo alto warming to 72 in

san bruno. 73 san francisco. beautiful day in pacifica and half-moon bay, low 70s in your forecast. the extended showing you temperatures begin to move in the other direction as we get back to work monday. the morning fog eventually working its way back into the forecast as well. mid-70s expected for your monday and then dropping a little farther as we get into tuesday/wednesday. bottoming out on wednesday upper 60s in the forecast which is rights about where we should be for this time of year. we're warm, and we're used to it. though i was at a baseball game yesterday and lots of people were talking about not bringing enough sunblock. wearing long sleeves from the morning. everyone is sitting there looking for shade. >> i walked around lake merritt yesterday, folks were just lying on the grass. it felt good. >> thank you. 60 wins in one season, how sweet it is. the golden state warriors set a franchise record with their 60th win of the season last night in milwaukee. second quarter warriors up 12,

it's up and good from three, curry put up 25 in 30 minutes of court time. third quarter curry dancing beyond the arc, this time be a drew slams it down, warriors up nine. don't forget about clay thompson from three, and it's good. 21 from clay on the night. warriors win 108-95. take on the clippers tuesday in los angeles. thousands gathered in indiana to protest against the religious freedom restoration act. the governor says it's about freedom of religion but opponents say it's nothing more than discrimination. one company says it's no longer interested in creating jobs in the state. a 4-year-old girl walks out of her house in the middle of night while her parents are sleeping and boards a city bus. how did she get back home safely?

a man stuck on a 320-foot cliff in yosemite was rescued after stranded overnight. he was hiking with two friends in the afternoon when daylight began to fade. two men took a short cut, the other stayed on the trail. during the descent one hiker broke his classes and had to stay -- glasses. that's one the other continued and got stuck on the edge of the cliff. the man who stayed on the trail notified rescue crews about his missing friends. both found safe. shoppers at an east bay walmart got a scare when a fire broke out forcing them to evacuate. it happened about 7:30 last night at the walmart store on davis street in san leandro. firefighters say it started in the kitchen of the mcdonald's in the store. the flames did set off the sprinkleler system and all the customers had to evacuate. it took firefighters 30 minutes to get the fire out. no injuries reported. firefighters in southern montana are battling a 700-acre wildfire. it happened sometime yesterday afternoon, a few miles west of

red lodge. police say wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour spread it to 700 acres. 500 people were evacuated but later were told they could go back. this is a picture of the ski slope just beyond the trees. you can see a plume of smoke. firefighters say it's burned around some moments but no word of -- homes but no word of damage. a philadelphia couple received a scary phone call after their 4-year-old left the house late at night in search of a slurpee. early friday morning while her parents were still asleep little anna bell got out of bed, slipped out of an unlocked back door and walked five blocks in the rain to the bus stop. her mission? she says it was to find a slurpee. when she climbed on board the city bus the bus driver says he couldn't believe his eyes. >> man, i was like oh, got to be kidding me. not this time of night, 3:00 in the morning, a little girl?

jet skidded off the runway at halifax airport. officials say it made an abrupt landing before sliding off the runway. 25 people are treated for minor injuries. there was a storm at the airport when that incident happened. there are several new details about the germanwings pilot who prosecutors say crashed a plane into the french alps last week. one report says andreas lubitz fiancee broke up with him the day before the deadly crash. another says he was having eye problems that could have ended his career as a pilot. a third report quotes an ex- girlfriend saying he would do something that would make people remember him. you always talk about the weather that runners would like. we know the rock 'n' roll marathon is going on. i think they may want to finish sooner than later. >> yes, we have nice warm weather on the way but for runners who like it cool off to a cool start. but the temperatures are going to begin to turn around and we can't get enough of the sun. shining overhead this morning. just a beautiful start. few patches of fog but hard to

fight at this point. the northerly breeze continues and that helped to scour out any possibility of the low clouds coming back at least for today. so a chilly start to the morning. we will see our warmest afternoon before temperatures begin to turn around, we do have a cooling trend on the horizon, unfortunately no rain in the extended forecast. another dry week ahead. temperatures right now, let's start with the coolest spot, napa checking in at 38 degrees. 52 san francisco. we have the runners out there this morning. 46 redwood city. chilly one, half-moon bay, 43 for you. 46 livermore and fairfield. as we slide into the east bay we have temperatures in the 50s in areas like antioch, 54 for you. upper 40s to start in lafayette and danville, 46. for the afternoon today, let's start with the warmer spots, 80s in the forecast for areas like antioch, livermore. 81 expected for you. concord into the north bay, and

along the peninsula, we have upper 40s in the forecast for you. 78 in fremont and 79 oakland this afternoon. along the coastline it's going to be a nice day where we have 70s pacifica. low 70s half-moon bay and into santa cruz, mid to upper 70s in the forecast. the warmest day is today. temperatures begin to drop off as soon as tomorrow. a look at the extended forecast coming up. 7:32. happening now -- thousands of people are running to the streets of san francisco for this year's rock 'n' roll half- marathon, kicked off about an hour ago at the great highway and allie is live at the finish line where people will probably be crossing pretty soon, right? >> reporter: yeah. we're expecting the first runner to cross the finish line any time now in the next two to five minutes. we're told a runner that runs a five-minute mile. so he's a mile ahead of the

other runners. looks like that is one of the lead motorcycles head hadding through. so sometime maybe during this live shot we will see him cross the finish line. it's at larkin and mcalice center. this is the san francisco rock 'n' roll half marathon. there's also a 5k and 10k happening here. there's the finish line. you can see the volunteers with medals waiting to hand them out with people who cross the finish line. there's 8,000 people taking part. you can't see it behind the tents but there is a stage. a concert here at civicker plaza for everyone who -- civic center plaza for everyone who finishes the race. it will be performed by the band american authors. they play "best day of my life." it kicked off 6:30 this morning. we were there at the starting line. the appeal of this race according to organizers and a lot of people who take part, there are competitive runners but a lot of people come through and do it for the

course. the course takes people from ocean beach to the presidio, people get to run across the golden gate bridge and takes them through a lot of the scenic spots in the city. here's what the race organizer said. >> i think it's a good way to approach this race. this is not a fast course. it's a gorgeous beautiful course in san francisco. >> reporter: back here at the finish line you can see there's some people waiting out here with -- waiting for the first runner, the men's half-marathon to get through. and cross the finish line. again they should be coming by in the next two to three minutes, five minutes, any time from now. the half-marathon takes about an hour, hour and-a-half to get across the finish line. that's what we're waiting for. back to you. >> i feel we should wait with

you. when they pull that little tape across you know he's got to be close. it must be a lot of good energy out there. >> reporter: i'm having a hard time hearing you because they turned up the music here. can't hear you but we'll definitely talk to the person who -- the first person across the finish line this morning. >> thank you. seems appropriate they turn up the music. check this out. not everyone about to finish. some still enjoying that midway point. this is the golden gate bridge. check out the people on the bottom of the screen as they make their way across the bridge. right now you do have four lanes of that bridge closed to accommodate all those runners so traffic is making its way through as you can see on your screen but there are a lot fewer lanes to work with. san francisco's police department has another problem with its crime lab. that according to the san francisco chronicle. the paper reports irregularities with the lab's

dna unit. police say one technician and supervisor have been reassigned while investigating apparent violations of department testing standards. the paper reports testimony and evidence during a trial last year prompted this investigation. the chronicle says that trial indicated that analysts may have filled in the gaps of incomplete genetic evidence. state law only allows complete samples to be entered into the criminal database. that could call into question evidence used in hundreds of other cases. police in hayward are warning students to be careful after three attempted kidnaps there in the past six weeks. police say a 16-year-old girl was walking home from hayward high school friday when a man grabbed her and forced her into the back seat of a white car. investigators say the man got on top of the girl and pulled out a gun, luckily they say she fought back, was able to run home where her parents called 911. >> this is an extraordinary circumstance for any 16-year- old to face. and we're very proud of her for

the way she reacted to this. >> the first two incidents were reported near tennyson high school. both girls unhurt there. police say it's possible the same man could be responsible. they have released a sketch of him and there it is. this man is described as latino or east indian in his mid-20s. the case of a 6-year-old boy murdered nearly 35 years ago in southern california may soon be solved. yesterday police arrested 53- year-old kenneth rasmussen in idaho. the rental centered sex offender was convicted twice of molesting young boys in the 1980s. he's now been connected to the murder case of jeffrey david vargo. the boy went missing while bicycling around his home july 2, 1981. the next day his strangled body was found at a construction site about 25 miles away. he will 235eus a judge tomorrow and brought to l.a.

tomorrow to face murder charges. an officer killed in downtown philadelphia. it's not clear what led up to the shooting or how police were alerted to it. police found the off-duty officer with a gunshot wound to the chest. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. investigators say they do not have anyone in custody and they do not believe the pub is at risk. a boston police officer remains in critical condition after he was shot in the face. he's in a medically induced coma. officer john moynihan just pulled over a car when the suspect pulled out a gun and shot him just below the eye. other officers shot and killed a suspect when he tried to run away. that man had a history of violent crime including several gun convictions. police say these types of shootings are rain in boston. police in davis are still trying to determine what led up to the deaths of a uc davis veterinary student and her roommate whitneyeningler, less than two, did whitney engler less than two months from graduating.

classmates held a candlelight vigil >> this is in no way a celebration of her passing, it's about the joy she brought to everyone's life. >> engler and her 23-year-old roommate joseph hein were found shot to death at their home after a seven-hour standoff with police that started thursday night. police say they are investigating the is a a murder/suicide but not determined who shot who. her friends say her service dog escaped during the siege and want to find "rosy" and turn her over to engler's mother. crews looking for two people till missing after an explosion in a new york city apartment building. admitting the chances of finding them are slim but not ready to give up yet. meanwhile investigators are trying to figure out what exactly caused that blast. consolidated edison says last august utility workers found multiple leaks in a gas line. con ed says the leaks were

repaired, and it could take a week of round the clock work to sift through all the debris from the buildings. into berkeley researchers lead an effort to better understand earthquakes. the newspaper reports that thers had been studying quartz samples. they are looking for reasons for the stress causes. for the first time researchers have measured strains on the fault's grinding tectonic plates. the project is ongoing but researchers are making breakthroughs in finding out why the earthquakes occur and how as well as helping to narrow down the prediction window. a man working to raise money for people hit from the earthquake seven months ago. this is rob a month before the earthquake, moved most of his belongings to a napa storage facility. after the quake hit he couldn't get his stuff out because the building was deemed unsafe. more than 200 units were

preferences. supporters say it's all about the freedom of religion but opponents including some business owners say it could lead to discrimination. >> my frustration with it is that it was passed in wrapping it around a flag of business ownership as if i needed this kind of protection. i didn't ask for this kind of protection. >> the final four will be held in indianapolis next week. the ncaa released a statement that reads in part -- angie's list cancelled plans for a proposed $40 million campus expansion project in indianapolis that would have brought 1, 000 jobs to that area. the impacts of the law are has being felt in the bay area. san francisco mayor ed lee is ban are -- banning san

one person died and another had to be airlifted to a hospital after a deadly two-car crash in santa cruz. it happened 2:00 yesterday afternoon on empire grade road near the north entrance to uc santa cruz. investigators say it's unclear what may have caused the accident and bonnie dune fire

and rescue teamed up with the san francisco fire department to assist the chp in their rescue. so far no word on the condition of the survivor. the city rosa city council could cut back on places where it's legal to vote. on tuesday they will vote on making it illegal to do it inside. the regulations would also ban smoking in all city-owned properties which include parks, recreation centers, golf courses and bus stops. if approved the measure would be phased in during the next year. bart's new elevated shuttle to the oakland airport appears to be a success but many riders not happy with the price. it takes 8 minutes to go to the airport, 3.2 mile ride is $6. so far in february 2,600 people took the shuttle each weekday, that is 26% higher than the number of people that road the air bart bus system during the same time last year.

people are making their way to the streets of san francisco for this year's rock 'n' roll half marathon. here is a look at the course map. they all started all the way here at the great highway and then runners made their way through the presidio, went up over the golden gate bridge all the way back and they are going to end at civic center plaza here. here's a look at the midway point. there's the golden gate bridge. maybe fewer runners than earlier but making their way across the midway point of the golden gate bridge. allie is live for us at the finish line where people have already started to cross. >> reporter: a lot of people are crossing that finish line behind us. this is the finish line at mcacitister and larkin. the final stretch of this half- marathon. the san francisco rock 'n' roll includes a 5k and 10k. it started 6:30 this morning.

it takes people through some scenic routes. presidio, of course across the golden gate bridge. there are music stations and party stations. stops along the way for people who are running in this just for the fun of it. but there are competitive runners here as well. in fact we talked to the winner in the men's category for this half-marathon. fernando cabado of fresno finished in one hour, six minutes, 24 seconds. it's the first time he's run in this event. in fact he took the top spot away from the san francisco guy who won it the last two years in a row. cabada describes the course as harsh, he says there are some steep hills, inclines. he was glad he made it through and talks about how it fits into his future running goals. >> i go to boston in two weeks. this is a final prep for that. with the steep inclines and downhills and such i knew it's tough in boston too.

>> reporter: there are some road closures because of the race but -- great highway from lincoln to balboa is still shut down until 9:00 this morning. the golden gate bridge as we showed you in the picture, the two northbound lanes are shut down. to accommodate all the runners. once the runners make it past the finish line they are here at civic center plaza. you can see a lot of people taking pictures, getting their medals as they make their way past the finish line. there's also a concert here at civic center plaza to wrap things up this afternoon. the band american authors are performing. their song is pretty popular on the radio "best day of my life." the first runners made their way through. we had a chance to talk to some people who are not just competitive runners but some of the people who are doing this for fun and also, coming up in the half-hour, a story of a man who was running this and just

finished this half half- marathon. he's advise waltly impaired. he -- visually impaired. he ran it with a tether, with another runner. more on this coming up. back to you. >> thank you. new this morning -- a person who was walking along i- 580 died after being hit by a vehicle and police say they are still looking for the driver. this happened just after midnight on eastbound 580 at the san leandro/hayward border near 150th avenue. chp shut down all the lanes while investigating this crash. the lanes since reopened. so far there's no word as to why the person was out there. we are learning new developments about yesterday's deadly motorcycle crash in sonoma county. happened on occidental road west of santa rosa. the driver of a subaru crossed with a motorcyclist.

the passenger of both vehicles were taken to the hospital with injuries. the passenger of the subaru was identified as singer norman greenbaum. he wrote and recorded "spirit in the sky" in 1969. it was his best known song though he did record other well known songs under other names. greenbaum, who is 72 years old lived in sonoma county for many years. bad weather in eastern canada is considered a likely factor in a plane accident that injured dozens of people this morning. an air canada flight from toronto to halifax, nova scotia ended with what officials called an abrupt landing. that did cause the plane to skid off the runway just after midnight. at the time of the crash local news outlet's say it was snowing heavily. 25 people went to the hospital, all of their injuries are considered minor. power at the airport was knocked out briefly but airport operations are expected to be back to normal this morning. we are learning more about the co-pilot who intentionally crashed a passenger jet into

the french alps on tuesday. a french tv station says andreas lubitz had been with his girlfriend tore seven years, they had planned on getting married next year but the day before the crash she decided to end the relationship. a german tabloid is also reporting that another ex- girlfriend is claiming he used to have nightmares about crashing and said one day he would do something that would make the world remember his name. there are also reports that he may have been getting treatment for an eye condition that could view ended his career -- have ended his career. investigators continue to look for the mostive. but the father of a british crash victim says he wants the authorities to focus on preventing other tragedies. >> if there was a motive or reason we don't want to hear it. it's not relevant. what is relevant is this should never happen again. >> that father also went on to say he had felt the support of so many people during this difficult time, especially the people in the town near the

crash site. he hopes one day people will remember it only as the beautiful place and not the scene of a horrible plane crash. that town held a memorial service led by a catholic bishop. organizers say they hope the families of the crew and passenger on board the germanwings flight will find solace and know the world is praying for them. about 200 people attended although it's not clear how many of them were relatives of the victim. new this morning, today is palm sunday which is the start of the solemn holy week for christians around the world. >> pope francis led mass in st. peter's square. he paid tribute to people killed for their faith, a reference to the 21 egyptian coptic christians killed by islamic state mill lants in libya. crowds also gathered in the church of the holy sepulchre

very frustrated. he says the spring breakers there have "no respect for themselves, for others and most of all for authority." those comments came after seven students were shot during a party. this morning a 22-year-old alabama man is behind bars and he's been charged with attempted murder. police say he opened fire at a party where most of the party goers were students from alabama's a & m university, arriving deputies called that scene complete chaos. >> it is complete chaos here. we have 100 witnesses or so, we're trying to to interview, we have a mess. >> victims found in the home, outside laying on the street, investigators are expected to remain at that scene this morning. we want to give you a look at some of the top stories making the front page of newspapers across the nation. here at home we go to the front page of "the oakland tribune." >> focuses on police officer michael johnson killed in the line of duty this. is a picture of his academy class that graduated in 2001.

the police officers association actually calls them the closest- knit group of officers in the department. >> the headline reads "an unfortunate bond" because this academy class of 2001 lost two officers in the line of duty. classmate jeffrey fontana was killed during a traffic stop just weeks after graduation. and now they have lost officer johnson. >> according to the tribune there are only 19 members of that 35-member class still with the san jose police department. but johnson's death has brought them all back together. they are grieving as is this community. >> this thursday a public memorial for officer johnson is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., at the sap center in san jose. we head to southern california. this is a look at the front page of the "l.a. times." the headline reads "rail safety again at issue." that all follows that commuter rail accident yesterday that happened in front of the university of southern california. >> the conductor of the train

a man who was stuck on a 320-foot cliff in yosemite was rescued by a helicopter yesterday after being stranded on the mountain overnight. he was hiking with two friends friday afternoon when daylight began to fade. two of the men decided to take a short cut. the other stayed on the trail. during the descent one hiker broke his glasses and had to stay put. that is when the other continued and got stuck on the edge of the cliff. the man who stayed on the trail notified rescue crews about his missing friend. both were found safe. some shoppers at a east bay

walmart got a scare when a fire broke out forcing them to evacuate. it happened :30 last night at the walmart on davis street in san leandro. 7:30. firefighters say it started in the mcdonald's in the store. it set off the sprinkler system and all customers evacuated. it took firefighters 30 minutes to get the fire out. no injuries were reported. no a firld couple received a scary phone call after their 4- year-old left the house late at night in search of a slurpie. while her parents were asleep little anabelle walked out of bed and walked five blocks in the rain to the bus stop. she said it was to find a slurpee. she boarded the bus and the bus driver couldn't believe it. >> i was like got to be kidding me, no the this time of night, 3:00 in the morning, a little girl? >> i wanted a slurpee. >> when the bus driver realized the girl was all alone he

apparent violations of department testing standards. the paper reports testimony and evidence during a trial last year prompted this investigation and the chronicle says that trial indicated the analyst may have filled in the gaps of incomplete genetic evidence. state law only allows complete samples tore entered into the criminal database. that could call into question evidence used in hundreds of other cases. the case of a 6-year-old boy who was murdered nearly 35 years ago in southern california may soon be solved. yesterday police arrested 53- year-old kenneth rasmussen of idaho. the registered sex offender was convicted twice of molesting young boys in the 1980s. investigators now connected him to the murder case of jeffrey david vargo. the boy went missing while bicycling around his home in july of 1981. the day after he went missing his strangled body was found at a construction site 25 miles away. rasmussen is expected to appear before a local judge tomorrow and will then be brought to california to face murder charges. police in hayward are

warning students to be careful after three attempted kidnappings in the past six weeks. police say 16-year-old girl was walking home from hayward high school friday when a man grabbed her and forced her into the back seat of a white car. investigators say the man got on top of the girl and pulled out a gun. luckily they say she fought back, and was able to run home where her parents called 911. >> this is an extraordinary circumstance for any 16-year- old to face. and, we're very proud of her for the way she reacted to this. >> the first two incidents were reported near tennyson high school, both of those girls also got away unhurt. police say it's possible the same man could be responsible. they've released this sketch, the man is described as latino or east indian in his mid-20s. friends and family continue to mourn the two men killed in a west oakland fire. yesterday a group gathered at the mclaughlin gallery in san francisco to remember 36-year- old daniel mo thomas. thomas was a professional

artist who started a few years ago but was already making his mark. some people even referred to his work as revolutionary. a few of his pieces were on display yesterday. friends are calling his death a huge loss for the art community. >> he was a very talented artist, one of our shining stars. i think he had a lot to say and i think he had work that the rest of the world would be interested in seeing. >> i'll miss everything about him. i'll miss working with him and looking forward to seeing what his new ideas are going to produce. >> earlier in the day friends and family gathered at the chapel of the chimes in oakland to mourn 27-year-old davis latona. thomas and latona were killed in the three-alarm fire last saturday that swept through their live work space in oakland. it's believed to have been accidental possibly caused by a burning cigarette. emergency crews are still looking for two people missing after a new york city apartment building exploded. officials admit the chances of finding those people are slim but say they are not ready to

give up yet. meanwhile investigators are trying to figure out exactly what caused that blast. consolidate edsson says last august a gas line was broken, officials say those were repaired. officials say it could take a week of round the clock work to sift through the debris from the buildings. scientists say they are getting closer to predicting earthquakes. maybe they can't say exactly when the big one will hit but they have a better idea of how and why they hit. a study lasted a year and produced pretty incredible results. the focus was on samples collected a mile and-a-half beneath the san andreas fault. researchers found on microscopic fault line cracks that may have been the result of multiple earthquakes. they also say the power behind the quakes is higher than previously measured. a man from napa is selling t-shirts to raise money for some people affected by the

earthquake that hit seven years ago. this is rob frias. a month before the earthquake he moved both of his -- most of his belongings to a napa storage facility. after the quake he couldn't get his stuff because the building was deemed unsafe. more than 200 units were affected. the storage facility is now trying to charge its tenants to pay for the 167,000-dollar recovery effort before the units are destroyed. he's also started a go fund me page to help raise money. it's 8:36. right now nearly 8,000 people making their way to the streets of san francisco for this year's rock 'n' roll rock half-marathon. there are important closures in effect. it started 6:30 this morning on the great highway. runners made their way up the presidio, golden gate bridge, across it and back and then came on through to end here at civic center plaza.

alliuee rasmus at the finish line where runners and the public will be celebrating with a free concert in about 30 minutes. i love "american authors," rock to them all the time. >> reporter: yeah. everyone here takes part in the race and even if you're not part of the race i'm sure you can hear the music. we're at civic center plaza. there's a lot of space here to gathered around and listen in to the concert once it gets started. it's going to be happening there. not sure if you can see the stage set up in the distance. this half-marathon started about two hours ago. so now turn the camera around and you can see a lot of people just wrapping up, making their way across the finish line here. we were at the starting line on the other side of town at ocean beach at 6:30 this morning. great highway and fulton. this 13-mile half-marathon course takes runers from ocean beach through the presidio, over the golden gate bridge and back and there are music and parties stages along the way.

a lot of people run this for fun but there are competitive runners too. some of them with pretty incredible stories. this morning we met adrian broca of los angeles, visually impaired, lost 95% of his vision as an adult because of a genetic condition. he ran the half-marathon in about one hour and 30 minutes. he said it was a pretty tough course, the first few miles have a kind of a steep incline but told us about the incredible sense of accomplishment he felt crossing the finish line. >> you think about it as a metaphor in life. even though you may face challenges at the start, you're able to see light at the end of the tunnel once you get closer to the finish line. >> reporter: he obviously has a lot of mental tenacity but how did he do it physically? he had a guide runner tethered to him for the entire run. we talked to him as well.

crashed the passenger jet into the french alps last tuesday. a french tv station says andreas lubitz had been with his girlfriend seven years and they were planning to get married. the day before the crash she decided to end the relationship. a german tabloid is reporting that another exclaims lubitz used to have nightmares about crashing and said one day he would do something that would make the world remember his name. there are reports lubitz may have been getting treatment for an eye condition that could have ended his career. an international team of investigators are continuing to look for the motive in the crash that killed him and 149 others. the father of a british crash victim says he wants authorities to focus on preventing other tragedies. >> if there was a motive or reason, we do not want to hear it. it's not relevant. what is relevant is this should never happen again. >> that father adds he has felt the support of so many people

a division of the oakland police department within oakland. it's an open door facility that takes in any animal from oakland that needs shelter. it is holding an event called dogs on the cat walk to help find owners for the animals. this morning we are getting a sneak peek at some of the stars of the show. >> reporter: first, i want to introduce rebecca, director of the facility. have you ever been in a fashion show? >> i have never been in one. >> reporter: i want to ask where the idea came from. we'll do that while we are introducing the dogs. we've got emma first up. she's got that butterfly. we saw her a couple minutes ago. tell us about emma. >> she's a beautiful blue nose pit mix. she's really mellow, super sweet. she's dressed like a butterfly, available for adoption. >> reporter: we have julie dressed as a princess.

all right. do you remember this video? it's from back in february. check out the two llamas hanging outs. they became social media stars because they escaped from a planned event and then this happened. they led police on a chase through the streets of sun city, arizona. no one could catch them. >> go left, right, straight. no one could get them.

for 20 minutes people failed to grab the llamas. they were lassoed by a modern day cowboy and returned to their owners. these antics handed the llamas in hot water with department of ag. >> after this case, usda made it a requirement for animals to have a license to attend events. since the owners of the run away llamas can't afford the license the animals made their last public appearance yesterday. >> they were being used for therapy and educational purposes. thanks to 20 minutes of excitement they are being forced into early retirement. >> it's really sad, because they really do help out a lot of special needs people and kids and the elderly. everybody responds to them so well. it is really a shame to have it shut down. >> well, the owners say if their two llamas are retiring, they're going to retire too. they're as a group going to greener pastures up north.

a 16 year old girl was walking home from hayward high school friday when a man grabbed her and forced her into the back seat of a white car. the man got on top of the girl and pulled out a gun. luckily she fought back and was able to run home where her parents called 911. >> this is an extraordinary circumstance for any 16 year old to face. we are very proud of her for the way she reacted to this. >> the first two incidents were reported near ten son high school. both of the girls also got away unhurt. police say it's possible the same man could be responsible. they have released a sketch of him. there he is. he is described as latino or east indian in mid 20s. friends and family continue to mourn those killed in a fire yesterday. a group gathered at mclaughlin gallery to remember thomas. he was a professional artist who started a few years ago but was already making his mark.
