. we are following some developing news in san jose. boy, take a look at this. this is 101 north right near oakland road. you can see it looks like traffic is just stopped, basically stopped. the crash there involving several cars has actually shut down some of the lanes. sal will have the details coming up. >> that is not good. trank you for joining us,

wednesday, april 1. i'm pam cook. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather. i think you may want to grab a jacket. >> not fooling. many reports of 30s, napa airport 35 degrees. there's 30s santa cruz mountains, in the hills of palo alto 37. 50s for a few, but a lot of 40s. this is the coldest we've seen in a while. northerly breeze today. this system will slide by later and continue with the breeze.

the cooler air and partly cloudy later on, especially to the north. breezy and cool, giving way to 60s and low 70s. these are right about where we should be for this time of the year. we have a mess in the south bay. >> we do. northbound 101 at oakland road and all the slow traffic. northbound 101 is at a standstill here approaching the crash at oakland road just before 880. traffic is backed up beyond the interchange. i could put it on the map and show you the traffic is going to be busy. the alternate route will be monterey highway or 280 instead. 280 still looks good into the valley. you can go 85 to 17 to 880 and get to the same area.

those alternates are pretty decent at the time. 101 is not decent at all. expect this to be out there for at least a half hour as they clear the crash. no major injuries, but an injury accident and a lot of people had to be taken to the hospital. we had a report of a crash approaching the bay bridge here. we're looking into the crash. it doesn't look like a major crash, but it's backing up traffic. this morning they are looking into a security breach at san jose international airport. reviewing what went wrong last night as police say they caught someone roaming on the airfield. this is the fifth security breach in less than a year. >>reporter: yes, it is. we're here on the back side of

the airport where police say a woman scaled the fence. there is clearly a signposted saying this is a restricted area. you can see the fence height also changes and is higher in the one section, we believe about 10 feet, then lower adjacent to it. there's also barbed wire. they're on heightened alert since it happened yesterday at 5:15. a woman managed to cross the runway before she was spotted by a ups employee on the other side. officers found her near the southwest cargo area. police say she was combative and refused to give her identity, but they say she was young and was arrested fortress passing and resisting arrest.

>> generally i don't fly out of san jose, but this was the most convent flight for me. all things considered, i just might have to look into another airport with no breaches. >>reporter: they're reviewing security procedures and are in review mode because of the past four breaches. they're going to be looking at surveillance cameras to see how she got onto the airfield. a local congressman is calling for increased technology saying this airport and others are not doing enough when it comes to that, and we're going to get into more specifics. you'll hear from the congressman coming up at 6:30. >> it will be good to hear about that. 6:05 is the time. happening today, defense attorneys will seek to limit the evidence the jury will here in the wrongful death civil

lawsuit filed by the parents of the student who committed suicide after she was sexually assaulted by teenage boys at a party. the teens later admitted it in juvenile court and then they took cell phone pictures of the incident. opening statements are expected next week. friends of a woman killed yesterday morning while she was out jogging say she was studying to be a nurse and had just saved up enough money to buy a house. we first brought you this story yesterday morning as breaking news after a car hit her at the parkway near the waterfront. the medical examiner identified the victim as a 23-year-old, rita orta. the driver that hit her stopped and is cooperating. people that live in the area say there should be a stop sign at the intersection. it's the same spot where a nine- year-old boy was killed, hit by

a car five years ago. oakland could soon say good- bye to the coliseum. we're talking about the plan still facing major opposition. >>reporter: city leaders can't relish in the victory very long because they need to entice at least one major sports team to stay here, the most obvious choice being the raiders. last night the oakland city council voted to pass several environmental and planning measures that will clear the way for the massive project. the land is now rezoned to allow for the construction of new homes for the teams. plans also called for nearly 6,000 new homes and 8 million square feet of shopping and office space development. this project still needs a firm commitment from one of the

sports franchises. >> we'll check in for more on that coliseum program. a graduate student at stanford charged with trying to poison students at the school of medicine. the unidentified student apparently put it into the water bottles of his lab mates last fall and reportedly two students did become sick. the daily said the student has pled not guilty by reason of insanity to fellly charges and a spokesman calls it a heartbreaking situation. there will be another snowstorm in the sierra, and the governor will be there drawing attention to the drought. the water content and snow pack 8% of the average with the snow pack normally at its peak by

this day, april 1. the governor signed emergency legislation to fast track more than $1 billion for drought relief. two bars in san francisco doing their part to save water during the drought. wish bar south of market and bon bar in the mission are offering one dollar off any drinks that don't use ice, including beer, wine and shots. one of the owners says she's trying to raise awareness of the use of water and also save water at the same time. a bar can use about 300 pounds of ice for every 100 customers. >> that's pretty cool the death under investigation, new information from the medical examiner in los angeles. >>reporter: reports of whooping cough at area high schools and

. a goal to cut back on distracted driving is underway. >> i think it's important that tour bus companies that are profitting commit to hiring two staff members, one to narrate and one to drive. >> some tour bus companies already have separate ones, but others say they can't afford it and will fight the ordinance because it will put them out of business. supporters say they plan to take it statewide. people attending the tech conference in san francisco can now skip the hotel and stay on

lanes have finally reopened on northbound 101 in san jose. just a few moments ago traffic getting better. it was a complete standstill. a little further down the road it's not better. i can show you the area lit up as you drive up to the 880 interchange because of an accident on 101. we also want to mention the traffic getting into the valley on the 101 does not look back. traffic here on westbound 580, livermore valley slow. southbound 680 slow out of

pleasantton.. there are new safety concerns at the airport this morning after another security breach last night at the airport. we're live at the airport, and the suspect the intruder walked across a runway? >>reporter: yeah, that happened here. the question here on everybody's mind is, how did this happen and why does this keep happening here at the san jose airport. police are saying the woman apparently scaled the fence despite the barbed wire. a local congressman called this troubling and he doesn't know of any other airport that's had so many breaches in such a short period of time. all morning we've seen security patrolling the airport perimeter. last night police were checking the fences surrounding the airport. they came here around 5:15 yesterday after a ups employee spotted a woman walking in a

restricted area. police say it appears she jumped over a fence in the southwest corner and got onto the airfield, walking across the runway. officers caught up with her where ups has its operations. she was uncooperative and had to be subdued. >> currently san jose does not have a breach notification system, and the technology does exist. i've been calling for over a year now for every airport to use this system. >>reporter: airport officials say they're reviewing their surveillance video and security procedures to see what happened and what can be used. authorities are trying to figure out her identity because she refused to give her name. it's unknown why she wanted to get onto the restricted area of

the airport or if she wanted to cause harm. the surveillance cameras here are going to be reviewed, and you can get there's going to be a thorough investigation. there are more new developments in the alleged kidnapping case with another strange e-mail being sent yesterday to the lawyers representing a woman and her boyfriend. the author called off an ultimatum for police to apologize for calling the incident a hoax. the e-mail said the ultimatum was wrong and we'll not attempt any further damage or harm. this all started back when her boyfriend called police it to report she was kidnapped for ransom. two days later she turned up unharmed at her farm's home in huntington beach when the police say they believe the whole incident was a hoax.

the people who live in the neighborhood where the alleged kidnapping occurred say they don't know what to believe. >> we are worried because maybe we have criminals around here. >> so far both the police and fbi are making no comments on this case. the e-mail sender said that yesterday's e-mail will be the last one for at least several months. the state of arkansas is facing backlash after lawmakers passed a religious freedom bill. how does this have an effect on the bay area. >> several companies and local governments have expressed disapproval. it still has to be signed by the governor, but does appear that he will sign it. it's known as house bill 1228 and would prevent state and local governments from infringing on religious beliefs and the premise goes back to

when president clinton signed a religious freedom restoration act to protect liberal minorities. it would open up the floodgates to to discrime discriminate, some say. >> it tries to maintain a balance that we always try to achieve. this bill tries to do that. >> this bill is going to permit people to be treated like strangers when they're just like you and me. >> walmart, which is based in arkansas, came out in opposition to the legislation. the company's ceo asked the governor to veto the bill saying it undermined the spirit of inclusion in the state. oakland mayor is the latest in a series of california

politicians and business leaders to ban city paid travel to indiana because of the religious freedom restoration act passed there. san francisco mayor also banned city employees from traveling to indiana on city business. potential presidential jeb bush who arrived for a series of fundraisers say he supports the law, but many high-tech firms have come out against the indiana law including apple and twitter. there is new information this morning about the death of 47-year-old andrew getty. a law enforcement source tells the los angeles times that he was found in the bathroom of his hollywood hills estate and that he suffered some type of blunt force trauma. the times reports that it's unclear if the injury was caused by a fall or something else. a reporter said that he had not

been feeling well and had a doctor's appointment, but also reported that he had a restraining order against his ex girlfriend. secretary of state john kerry and diplomats from five other world powers plus iran are still holding nuclear negotiations, the deadline midnight yesterday, but negotiators decided to keep talking, saying they're close to a deal. if the group is able to come up with an outline of an agreement they'll then have until june 30 to iron out the details. iraqile soldiers celebrating the recapture of tikrit. iraqi forces launch had the operation to recapture it march

2. the u.s. launched air strikes on isis targets at the request of the iraqi government. tikrit was seized by isis last summer. happening today, a hearing set to finalize $1 million settlement between occupied protesters and city of oakland. 360 demonstrators will share $1.5 million. they filed a federal lawsuit against the city claiming they were unlawfully arrested in a demonstration and detained in inhumane conditions. some arrested were actually held 85 hours. the national service having hearings about moving alcatraz and the existing terminal is at peer 33, but the national park service has run into

difficulties getting a new lease from the port of san francisco. the park service is considering moving back to its previous location at peer 41 or moving to fort mason. >> the infrastructure already exists to handle the millions of visitors that want to go to alcatraz. that's where the hotels and giftshops are.. >> the barge service says it well comes public input and want to hear more. they're accepting comments on all three terminal proposals until may 20 on where or if to

efforts to stem gun violence may be working. oakland is one of the bay area cities that uses a technology to help the gun fire rates. these go directly to officers even before 911 calls come in. >> it makes it a lot easier for us to respond and possibly capture someone involved in gunfire. >> on average cities that use the technology see a 28% reduction. the oakland city council has cleared the way for a new sports complex to be built where the old coliseum stands now, but there are still major hurdles to overcome. we're in oakland live now, and you've been talking to raider fans. what are you hearing? >>reporter: it's been a long

time coming, but the city still needs to entice at least one major sports team to stay in the east bay and use the facility. so far the raiders have shown only a mild interest. last night they were one step closer to reality, passing several planning measures that clear the way. the land is now rezoned to allow construction for housing, shopping and office space development. >> the raiders we grew up with. my brother and nephew played for the raiders. we're enthusiasts. we like to see them stay. we don't want them to go anywhere. let them build the stadium.

we've got things happening on the roads and newsroom and that's no april fool's. >> you get to work today, and someone is saying, well, this is me coming into my office. what i'm currently doing is taking all the little pictures here, and one by one, i can wipe up the coffee. good morning, everyone. we can move on now. northbound 101, the accident clear, but the traffic slow. this is a live picture of northbound 101 as you come up on the 880 interchange. there was an accident at oakland road, and the traffic is still very slow.

as a matter of fact, you can see the live picture. you can put this on the map for you. northbound 101 is backed way up. people heard about this crash now, and they're on 85. your alternate is kind of slow. you can still use 85 to 17, still better than 101. please give yourself extra time. we also want to mention that the bridges are heavy. a little bit of wind action on those spans so please give yourself extra time. bay bridge backed up this morning for a delay of about 30 minutes before you actually get onto the span. so again give yourself plenty of time this morning on this wednesday. the commute is no joke, right? >> no, it is not. we do have a cold morning from 30s in lake county all the way

during last night's city council meeting tobacco smoke was called a nuisance. they passed legislation banning

smoking cigarettes and e cigarettes in public places and multifamily housing. the legislation does allow cannabis patients to smoke or vaporize their medication in their homes. shoppers in 13 bay areas, cities paying higher sales tax starting today in albany, hayward, union city and others. it increases to 10%. it could soon hit that level in other cities as well. today the mens basketball team competing for the championship. 24 points to it carry the team. he has set the all-time scoring record with 2,350 points replacing the old record back
