janine de la vega is there looking into what happened and the action the airport is taking now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." it's wednesday, april 1st. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. it's a little cool this morning. >> a little chilly. >> cold for some. this could be an interesting month. i think a colder, wetter pattern with snow in the mountains. chilly lows, it's a nice morning. it's cold out there. coldest we've seen in a while. mostly sunny. maybe partly cloudy to the north. a little piece of the system has to come in. 39 fairfield. 36 napa. coldest in a long time. low 40s for some. san jose has made it to 47 right at 50. how about that? half moon bay, sfo, san francisco, oakland, there are cooler temperatures than that. and a lot of 30s into lake county. mendocino county, santa cruz mountains as well. clear now but there is a system right there skirting the coast. up on the north coast, that will give us a kick on the

breeze later. 18 up in truckee. 45 sacramento. very cold, unstable pattern with a lot of shower activity and snow in the higher elevations. i think that's a sign of things to come. probably not until sunday. sunday/monday. breezy, cool, windy at times. it's the cooler temps and near normal high temps. not something we've said much of. all right, sal. we had the south bay. that's gotten better. is there something new or what? >> it's still slow, steve. the accident is gone which is better obviously. the lanes are open but northbound 101 is still slow as you drive up to the 880 interchange. you can see how slow it is. along northbound 101 getting up to an older accident site near oakland road. it was there for almost an hour. around the traffic really did suffer. now, the traffic is beginning to move but let me show you something. i will show you the maps here. you can see 101 is slow. 85 is slow. if you can somehow avoid 101

perhaps use monterey or el camino or 85 instead, that would be a better thing for you. right now, it's so slow. 101 is looking good on the peninsula. palo alto in mountain view. westbound 580 is slow getting into livermore, it gets better in dublin. southbound 680, concord to walnut creek. that's back understand at 242 as you -- backed up at 242 as you head south. 7:0. back to the desk. i'm sorry. we forgot the bay bridge. how can we forget that? that's backed up for a 25, 30- minute delay. now i can say back to the desk. investigators are looking into how another intruder got into a restricted area on the property of mineta san jose international airport. janine de la vega is live at mineta where after vane is an investigation is underway. >> reporter: good morning. well, congressman eric swalwell

is concerned, he's on the homeland security subcommittee for transportation security. he's been closely monitoring this airport because of the past four breaches. this makes number five in less than a year. this time it happened on the back side of the airport across from the stadium. a woman apparently scaled the fence. all morning long we've seen security patrols driving back and forth. they are on heightened alert. a woman managed to walk on the tarmac across the runway before she was spotted by a u.p.s. employee on the other side. officers found her near the southwest cargo area where u.p.s. has its operations. police say she was combative and refused to give her identity but they say she is young. congressman swalwell is calling on increased security, specifically technology, saying this airport and others are not doing enough to secure

perimeters. >> companies have technology that will alert airport officials the moment the perimeter is preached. they can distinguish distinguish human a human an animal. a pilot program, i believe should be taken plate across the country -- place across the country. >> reporter: police was arrested. they are still trying to figure out why she wanted to get on the tarmac and if she wanted to cause harm. they are already in review mode because of the past four breaches. they will be looking at the surveillance video. we've reached out to an airport spokeswoman. we're hoping to get comment from them later on this morning. tori? >> all right, janine de la vega live for us at mineta san jose. thank you. 7:0 5. a graduate student,

it's reported, allegedly put a poison into the water bottles of his lab mates last fall and reportedly two students became ill. the unnamed student has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to felony charges. a spokesperson calls it a sad and heartbreaking situation and says the affected students are receiving support from the university. 7:06. two recent cases of whooping cough in the east bay have one school district alerting parents. paul chambers joining us live in antioch to tell us about this new warning about a very contagious illness, paul? >> reporter: good morning, dave. of course, that illness is whooping cough. parents received notice it happened at two schools and got information about taking care of the illness. this is antioch unified's website. on the website there is a section on the front page that

talks about staying healthy. it explains whooping cough. there's been one days at deer valley and antioch high schools. we checked the websites front and center. a section called health information with the same link to the county. antioch superintendent says he's requesting an extra deep cleaning at both schools. they report a spike in cases last year since when there was more than 450 cases in coco county reported. there have been more than 80 cases. the department of health for california says everyone gets vaccinated. whooping kowfl starts like a cold and gets worse fast. the disease can spread easily with symptoms lasting for month. there will be a free clinic for students out here at deer valley later on this morning. if you want to get your child

checked out, you might want to go out there. dave? >> thank you. 7:07. kaiser permanente looking for people today to take part in a major study on autism spectrum disorders. researchers will collect genetic information from what they are calling trios. two biological parents and a child diagnosed with autism. kaiser is hoping to gather information from 5,000 member families. researchers say the goal create a resource for effective autism treatments. a wind whipped wildfire that prompted dozens of evacuations in southern california began as a controlled burn. the fire is burning in san bernardino county near victorville. the control burn was set yesterday. winds blew it out of control. fire frills say the fire burned so fast that about 25 homes had

to be evacuated dash. about 70 acres burned and the fire is now 30% contained. the san francisco housing market is so hot the median selling price for a home is nearly $1 million. real estate firm redfin says the medium price is february was $979,000. that's up 16% from a year ago. san jose is fast approaching the market with $942,000 and in oakland, the medium price is up but it's still less than $600,000. the real estate listing service says only 15% of homes in san francisco are within reach of middle-class buyers. i heard that san francisco could hit the mark by may. >> by may. >> prices go up a little bit in the spring as you get into the selling season. 7:09. we're trying to make san

francisco streets safer. it's a big deal this morning. the proposed changes for a tour bus company aimed at reducing distracted drivers. first it was indiana. now arkansas could face a firestorm over a religious freedom law. brian flores just coming into the studio and looking at the latest development including how wul mart, based in ar-- walmart, based in arkansas. good morning. the traffic -- i don't know how to say it, it's not good. it's not good on the san mateo bridge. it's not good on the dumbarton bridge. it's not good on the bay bridge. i will tell you one reason we think this is happening. skies are clear but the coldest lows we have seen in some time. it might be a sign of things to come here going forward. we'll talk about that and also what's in store for the weekend.

welcome back. the state of african saw now just -- arkansas one signature away from creating a religious freedom law. brian flores here in the studio with this last-minute push to get the governor, brian, to veto it. >> yeah, several bay area companies, even local governments have expressed disapproval of this bill being considered in indiana and just passed in arkansas yesterday. it still has to be signed by the governor of arkansas. all indications point it will be signed. known as the house bill 1228, it would prevent state and local governments on infringing on someone's beliefs without a compelling interest. this goes back to bill clinton signing the religious freedom restoration act. supporters of the blil say all it does -- bill say all it does

is show support but opponents say it will open up flood gates to allow discrimination. >> the issue is not i'm not for having the government or any entity force me as a business owner to do any particular item. >> this bill will permit people to be treated like strangers. >> walmart, which is based in arkansas, came out in opposition to the legislation. the company's ceo asked the governor to veto the bill saying it undermines the spirit of inclusion and does not preflecket the values we uphold in the state. libby schaaf is the latest in a series of california politicians and business leaders to ban city paid travel to indiana because of the religious freedom restoration act passed there. ed lee also panned city employees from traveling to

indiana on city business. many prayer firms have come out against this. san francisco's board of supervisors is set to vote on a proposed ordinance next week that would ban tour bus drivers from also narrating their own tours. the ordinance would require companies to a have a separate narrater on the bus in addition to the driver. it's part of the city's vision zeer dro plan which aims to eliminate traffic related deaths within the next nine years. the goal is to cut back on distracted driving. >> it's important that tour bus companies that are profiting by showing off our beautiful city commit to hiring two staff members, one to narrate and one to drive. >> while some companies already

have separate narraters others can't afford to and plan to fight the ordinance they say would put them out of business. people attending sales force's huge annual tech conference in san francisco can now skip a hotel and rent a room on the high seas. it's called the dreamboat. sales force chartered the luxly cruise ship as a lodging option for attendees of the dream force conference. people can stay on the ship for four nights. the rooms look like some of these pictures here and costs between $250 and $850 a night with 135,000 registered attendees for dream force. it's often difficult to find a hotel in the city. it will be docked at pier 37. it's near the terminal and it will cut down on traffic and make things easier for people. >> not a bad way to sail along. >> exactly.

hey, sal, we've got problems. you -- you sound a little frustrated with what's happening on the bridges. >> it's a little bit of slow traffic across the bridges, dave, tori. that's partially because of some wind but mostly because of slow traffic and one of the reasons that we are seeing, for example -- we'll talk about the san mateo bridge in a moment. but at the bay bridge, we had an earlier accident at the metering lights. a lot of little things have contributed to a backup. we were thinking this week would be lighter because of spring break and maybe that's next week. san mateo bridge is also very slow. it was a little windy on that span as someone reported to me. someone just sent me a tweet saying it's pretty windy. that could be the reason traffic is slowing. i happen to think there are a lot of people heading to 101. 508 is better than it normally

coming from the chimney. firefighters rushed inside and found an injured person in the bedroom. the individual was taken to highland hospital in critical condition. no word on what started that fire. we had a little earthquake, i mean a real little one. about a magnitude 2 in san pablo. >> okay. testing technology, coming up in 25 minutes, pam cook will show us why the east bay, you could be in the driver's seat when it comes to the future of driverless cars. it threw me across the room into my closet. >> up next, a close call for a young boy lucky to be alive after a pickup truck smashed right into his bedroom. we'll hear his incredible storyst story in his -- stoish in his own words.

7:24. take a look at this. an 11-year-old boy in the north bay is lucky to be alive. police say a man drove his pickup truck right through the wall of the boy's bedroom. >> this is just incredible. >> it really is. >> the truck hit the little boy, sebts him flying a -- sent him flying across the room. he's okay and is now sharing his story. >> claudine wong spoke with the boy and his parents and learned the driver accused of crashing into their home is behind bars facing hit-and-run and drug

charges. >> well, there was a wall right here and then my bed was right here and then over here -- >> reporter: this 11-year-old doesn't remember much of his incredible ordeal. it was monday morning. >> i was sound asleep at -- it was like 4:00 in the morning and then all of a sudden, i woke up in my closet. >> you don't remember anything? >> no. >> reporter: he doesn't remember a truck crashing through. >> threw me across the room. >> reporter: he doesn't remember that. >> my shoulder went through that and i hid my head. >> reporter: what he remembers is waking up unhurt in the closet. >> i turned around and there's these headlights. i started to walk to the door and i opened it. and my mom was right there. >> reporter: his some said that's a pretty accurate description. >> i just thought that i was grateful that he was alive and that there was -- there was an

angel. the way his room looked,er thought there's no -- the way his room looked, i thought there's no way he's walking out. >> reporter: the family is shaken up trying to explain all of this to family and friends. >> yeah. he sleeps right on the wall. >> i was pretty traumatized. >> my books are right here. >> reporter: he's okay and his 2-year-old brother asleep in the next room also want hurt. >> a power greater than ourself. that's for sure. >> mr. bob, i got hit by a car at 4:00 a.m. >> reporter: he's without a doubt charming and easy-going but his parents say the crash left its mark taking away his sense of safety and they are determined to get it back. >> reporter: he has a few ideas of his own. >> maybe my bed would go right here. >> just not over there.

>> a grain of salt is the word of the day. i will not joke around on this traffic report, there are legitimate slow traffic spots out there. let's take a look now at the toll plaza and some areas where we're starting. been getting better. i'm not kidding around about this. the traffic is going to be busy as you drive up to the toll plaza. there are no major problems getting into the city. we're looking at 880. so far it looks good into downtown oakland. 580 is looking good. we're hoping to get better traffic as we get closer to the end of the week. at i look at the freeways here -- as i look at the freeways here, southbound 880 getting down to fremont, it looks a touch better. northbound 101 traffic is slow on 101 as you drive toward the san jose airport. we had earlier accidents to blame. 85 and 280 are very slow. i can't think of a better way to get into the valley. just have to stick with the slow traffic. the time, 7:33. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. you are a good sport.

breaking news out of san pablo. dave mentioned this a couple of minutes ago, about 20 minutes ago, a small earthquake hit the area. it registered a 2-point-- 2.7. some say they felt light shaking. there have been no reports of damage or injuries. if you did feel it, let us know by tweeting us or going to our facebook page. the city of oakland may soon say bye-bye to the coliseum and hello to coliseum city. oakland city leaders now setting the stage for a brand- new said stadium for three teams and homes and stores. tara moriarty is outside the coliseum. it's not a done deal yet. there's big obstacles to this, tara. >> reporter: that's right. you know, fans are saying build it and they will come. but critics.

proposal say what if we build it and everyone is gone. so far only the raiders have shown a mild interest in this project. we know that the as haven't shown any enthusiasm for the proposal. warriors are building a new arena in san francisco. last night, the proposal came one step closer to reality, though. the oakland city council passed several environmental and planning measures that clear the way for the massive project. the land is now rezoned to allow for the construction of new homes for football, baseball and basketball. plans also call for housing, shopping and office space development. >> we heard about it. we think that's a great idea. oakland normally lags behind in doing things. but they do have that on the table. i think it's great. >> reporter: now the bad news, tax payers are still paying for nearly $100 million in renovations made to the coliseum when the teams

returned from allergy a. -- from l.a. in the '90s. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> thank you. 7:35. well, new developments in the alleged kidnapping case in vallejo. we've been telling you about it. according to the chronicle, another strange e-mail was sent yesterday to the lawyers representing denise huskins and aaron quinn. in the e-mail, the author called off an ultimatum for the police to apologize for saying the incident was a hoax. they said the ultimatum was wrong and said we will not attempt any further damage or harm. this all started back on march 23rd when huskins's boyfriend called the police and reported she was kidnapped for ransom. two days later, she turned up unharmed at her father's house in huntington beach. that's when police said they thought the whole incident was a hoax. people who live in the neighborhood where the alleged kidnapping occurred now say

they don't know what to believe. >> we are worried because maybe we have a criminal around here. >> well, neither the police or the fbi are commenting on the case right now. the sent -- the sender of the e-mail said it worn the last one for at least several months. kids club preschool in antioch is the largest state- funded preschool in:00 -- in in contra costa county. now, the school leases space from the antion unified school district but they haven't been able to negotiate a new contract. at this point, the school is scheduled to close on june 1st. now, school leaders say overall academic success is improved by early learning programs. parents and supporters want to keep the pressure on the school district to come up with a new

lease. they are gonna start with a meeting at the school cafeteria at 5:00 tonight. 7:37. now to the latest developments in the crash of the germanwings plane inspect french alps. two european publications report a cell phone was found in the wreckage. they say it shows shaky video of the final seconds of the crash from inside the plane. the report says people can be heard screaming oh, my god in saferl different -- several different languages. but french police say those reports are incorrect. they say cell phones have been found but have not been examined and lufthansa says it new the copilot had suffered from depression. they found e-mails from him telling the flight school he suffered a previous episode of depression. prosecutors say he deliberately

locked the pilot out of the cockpit before crash, the plane last week killing everyone on board. new information this morning about the death of 47- year-old andrew geddy. a medical examiner believes andrew geddy died from an accident or natural causes. a law enforcement source says he was found in the bathroom of his hollywood hills estate yesterday and that he suffered from some kind of blunt force trauma. however, the l.a. times reports it's not clear if the injury was caused by a fall or by something else. the coroner is telling tmz that geddy did not been feeling well and he scheduled a interest's appointment for -- a doctor's appointment for today. >> it's too early in the investigation. the coroner is here. we're waiting for search warrants to go in and examine the body. >> andrew was one of four sons of san francisco

philanthropists. the family released a statement confirming his death. they are asking for privacy as they mourn his loss. the fortune is estimated at $5 billion. 7:389. secretary of state john kerry -- 7:39. secretary of state john kerry and diplomats are holding nuclear negotiations. the self-imposed deadline to work out a framework was midnight yesterday. but negotiators decided to keep talking saying they were close to a deal. if the group is able to come up with an outline of an agreement they will have until june 30th to iron out the details. iraqi soldiers are celebrating the recapture of tikrit. the soldiers replaced the black and white isis flag with the iraqi flag. iraqi forces launched the operation to recapture tikrit

shot spotter uses audio equipment and can pinpoint where gunshots are fired. oakland is one of the cities using that technology and last year, it saw a 26% drop in gunfire rates. alerts from the shot spotter go directly to patrol officers even before 911 calls come in. police say that may be the reason behind the decline. on average, cities that use their technology, they say a 28% drop in gunfire. another stat from the company, this shows the most dangerous hour of the week is between 2:00 and 3:00 friday morning. tori. >> friday morning. that's interesting. >> 2:00, 3:00. >> all right. of it is 7:47. want -- it's 7:47. sal, you've been a pretty good

cities will pay higher sales tax starting today. in albany, hayward, union city, san leandro, el cerrito, the sales tax goes up to 10%. it could hit that level in some other cities soon. state lawmakers are considering a plan to give cities and countying more leeway in asking voters for sales tax hikes. all of the money does not go to the city. it's a combination of taxes. amazon is making it easier for shoppers to always have their favorite house hold items on hand. there's a button that has the name of a product. when users press the button, it uses wi-fi to connect with an amazon account and automatically orders that specific item. you have half an hour to cancel the order. darn is available only to -- is available only to amazon prime members who request it.

morning. there have been 84 respoegeses from -- responses from 14 zip codes. people in concord, marin county, north berkeley and el sobrante are reporting they felt like shaking. no reports of damages or injuries. if you felt it, tweet us or go to our facebook page. one person on our facebook page told us that the shaking actually woke them up. investigators are looking into how another intruder entered a restricted area near a runway at mineta san jose airport. janine de la vega is live at the airport where an investigation is underway into the fifth security breach there in less than an a -- less than a year. hard to believe. >> reporter: i just spoke with some authorities. sheriff's deputies say they still don't know the name of the woman who was arrested for this security breach. she wouldn't give her name or date of birth. she's looked into the jail as a jane doe. police tell us that she

apparently scaled the fence here on the back side of the airport. you can see the fence height here changes. it's higher about 10 feet on other side and then lower to the section adjacent to it. there's barbed wire that the faa says meets requirements. we've seen security patrols driving back and forth. they are on heightened alert. police say a woman managed to walk onto the tarmac and actually cross the runway before she was spotted by a u.p.s. employee on the other side. officers found her near where u.p.s. has its operations. police say she was combative and had to be subdued. eric swalwell wants the airport to upgrade its technology. >> i'm troubled that there is another breach at san jose airport. i know of no airport that in the last year has had more breaches, you know, we should be encouraged that this person

was stopped before anyone could be harmed but i still believe we have to have technology in place at the airports that alert security officials at the moment of the breach. >> reporter: swalwell would like to see a perimeter breach notification system installed at the airport which is technology that can immediately detect a person or animal. they are reviewing security procedures to see what happened and what can be improved. the woman was arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest. it's unknown why she wanted to get into the restricted ardia or if she -- area or if she wanted to cause harm. this will be investigated thoroughly in the coming days. >> thank you. and also new this morning, a person was critically injured in a house fire in oakland. firefighters received an emergency call just before 5:00 this morning from a home near mountain boulevard. when crews arrived they found

smoke coming from the chimney. firefighters rushed inside and found an injured person in the bedroom. the individual was taken to highland hospital. no word on what started the fire. a warning this morning for parents in antioch after two recent cases of whooping cough. paul chambers joining us live so what's the school district saying. >> reporter: i would say i just spoke with the school official and they say they learned about the whooping cough incident on monday and they took immediate action. in is some of the immediate action they took on their website. there is a section front and center. it talks about staying healthy in order to stay in school. there's a link to the health services site explaining whooping cough. official says there was one at deer valley and antioch high schools. we checked with the health information with the same site talking about the illness.

we would get a little bit of a break with a traffic because it is spring break for for a lot of people. the easter holiday is at the beginning of next week. usually around this time, we get some days that are lighter than usual. there's still hope for that. right now, 880 northbound is slow up to 23rd in oakland. when up get to the bay bridge toll plaza, that's backed up for a 15-minute delay, 15, 20 minutes. we've seen some improvement. the worse commute in the bay area is in the silicon valley. northbound 101 never recovered after that much earlier crash near 880. that's been slow all the way up to mountain view. 785 and 280 are still very slow so this is the worst day so far this week for that commute and here it is. you can see drive drawn a line on the bad freeway. northbound 101. let me get rid of it for you. the red sensors are showing stop-and-traffic traffic everywhere. let's go to steve. >> sal, you don't want to be a fool in the rain.

representing denise huskins and her boyfriend, aaron quinn. in it, the author called off an ultimatum for police to apologize for calling this a hoax. the e-mailer said we will not attempt any further damage or harm. it all started on march 23rd when huskins's boyfriend called police to report she had been kidnapped for ransom. two days later, she turned up unharmed at her father's house. that's when police believe the whole incident was a hoax. people who live in the neighborhood where the alleged kidnapping happen don't know what to believe. >> we are worried because maybe we have criminals around here. >> police and the fbi are not commenting on the case. the sender said yesterday's message would be the last for at least several months. the mayor of richmond launching a one-man campaign to

>> thank you. 8:38. we have a sad update. a person who was critically hurt in a house fire in oakland has now died. firefighters got an emergency call just before 5:00 this morning from a home near mountain boulevard. when the fire crews got there, they found smoke coming out of chimney. firefighters pushed inside and found a man in a bedroom. he was rushed to highland hospital but in the last 15 minutes we found out the person died. no word yet on how the fire started. also new this morning, we're hearing the pollutants in asia are making the air here in california very dirty. researchers at uc davis say up to 10% of the small in the san joaquin valley can be traced from coming outside of california. most pollution traveled 6,000 miles away from china and other

and since then she's started the always dream foundation. she joins us in the studio to talk about special campaign you are taking part in hoekd. good morning. thanks for being here. >> i have to ask you, when you look at video like that of you as a young skater, do you miss that kind of intense competition? will you kind of relieved it's over? >> both. definitely relieved. there's no greater feeling than to be at the top of your game and to be able to compete and feel like you did go out there and do anything. miss that feeling. but at the same time, the pressure, i don't miss that. i can't even imagine the pressure it must be on for young people. you were quite young when you were doing that. how did you handle that kind of situation? >> i think it was the only life i knew. it was like -- this is what i have to do and you've train and you have worked hard for moments on the ice. you about out there and say -- you go out there and say this

is it. >> to your best. >> and you still do quite a bit of skating now for performances and things like that. >> i kind of -- for fun. it's my hobby. >> you have a cause that you've been supporting for a while. you have your foundation. why do you put your energy in literacy? >> i think becoming a bomb and having kid in the public school -- a mom and having kids in the public school system, possibly seeing other kids don't have the foundation of learning to read at home. my foundation wanted to get inant the ground level hand start these kid -- and start these kids off. >> tell us what are you doing. >> march was national reading month. always dream foundation partnered with leapfrog on a

same liccardo is looking at new options to help those who don't have a place to live. there's also new evidence that stem the gun violence, it may be working. shot spotter, there is the company that uses audio equipment to pinpoint gunshots. oakland is one of the bay area cities using the technology and last year, they saw a 26% drop in gunfire rates. now, the alerts from the shot spotter go correct -- go directly to patrol officers before 911 calls come in. place say that may be the reason beindependent -- behind the decline. >> makes it easier for us to respond. >> on average cities that have this technology, they see a 28% drop in gunfire. another stat from the company, their inphone shows the most dangerous hour of the week is between 2 and 3:00 friday
