hospital right now. and they tell me he had to get 16 stitches on his head. we're going to show you the whole visit -- whole video, and some people might find it disturbing. >> reporter: police say the man was at his usual spot. sitting on a bucket on geary. a man walks up and pulls out what appears to be a metal pipe. hitting the man so hard, the pipe slips out of his hand. >> i heard the noise of a thud and that was the man hitting him with a pipe. >> reporter: another camera shows him turning a corner on to the alley, passing people and never looking back. >> when you see an act so raw like this, in san francisco we like to send a message that if

the sides. they're hoping for tips and anyone who calls in can remain anonymous. police in san francisco are also looking for a female hit- and-run driver involveed in chaotic incident that has left a bicyclists with life threatening injuries. the driver is suspected of causing several collisions on scott street near fell. police describe the driver as latina. they say she rear ended a car and hit three bicyclists. the woman then veered again and hit a toyota carolla which was pushed into a garage. a man sitting outside says he saw the whole thing. >> it's a white car ran into the gray car which ran into the house. which pinned two bicyclists over to the left and one guy

over here to the right. >> reporter: that witness says people tried to tell the driver to stop but she sped off on oak street. police say the severely injured bicyclists was thrown more than 20 feet. officers say they do have a license plate number of that suspect's vehicle. so it is likely just a matter of time before they find her. now to the south bay where thousands of people pay tribute to san jose police officer michael johnson at a public memorial service today. officer johnson was killed in the line of duty. today he was served for his service and duty. fellow officers from all over the bay area and around the country saluted as it passed beneath a giant american flag hanging from a ladder truck. from the ground you can see all the different department that is were in attendance today all dressed in different colored uniforms. all there for one reason.

> a motorcyclist was killed this evening during the rush hour commute in san mateo. highway patrol officers say witnesses reported seeing the motorcyclists fall from the fly over and land in that grassy area below the highway. it happened at about 6:00 tonight. and according to initial report, the motorcyclists that may have been involved in a collision before going over the side of that ramp. authorities have not yet

do. and i felt very appreciative. >> reporter: police say a 19- year-old man was shot and wounded outside the school. they say he was targeted but have not revealed the motive. so far this year, 10 people have died on caltrain tracks in the bay area. that's almost one person every week. caltrain is now looking at ways to make their tracks safer. cristina rendon tells us about some of the improvement that is have already been made and some that are now in the works. >> reporter: when working on or around a train, safety comes first. caltrain officials are troubled that 10 people have died on their tracks since the start of 2015. >> one life lost is too many but certainly to have lost 10 in the first quarter of the year, it's concerning to all of us. >> reporter: a meeting addressed those concerns. >> this is not just a caltrain

problem it's a community problem. >> reporter: along with raising awareness to safety. sometimes fencing and signs are not enough. >> do this type of thing. >> reporter: jim kaufman trains workers, training them to look out for people around the tracks that look sad or anxious. >> with some gentle coaxing and a direct question, do you feel like hurting yourself today. the deputy can make an intervention that could save a life. >> reporter: last year transit police kept 40 people from taking their lives but they can't do it alone. >> at the ends of the day, the problem we're looking at is bigger than suicide on caltrain it's the issue of suicides in our community. >> reporter: it's why caltrain says they're committed to educating the public and they refuse to let the cost of

detail 10 years of cases to see if there's evidence of racial bias. a federal judge has ordered the state corrections department to provide sex change surgery for a transsexual inmate. it's a first for california. the inmate is 51 michelle leal norseworthy. she's currently serving a life sentence for murder in sacramento. the judge says denying her the surgery violating her rights. the procedure costs about $800,000 and they're considering an appeal -- $80,000 and they're considering an appeal. i'm tracking a wet weather trend headed toward the bay area and a potential impact on your holiday weekends. the deal to keep iran from developing nuclear weapons. at subway, a great meal starts with a great sandwich on the new "simple 6 menu."

we have some breaking news from the north beach district now in san francisco. firefighters are on the scene of a fire on an apartment building on columbus street. the fire was reported at 10:00 tonight. crews just brought under control the fire in the past couple of minutes. we do have a crew on the way right now and we will let you know if we get more information. the u.s. and its partners say they have reached what's being called a historic understanding to limit the nuclear ambitions of iran. diplomats announced a frame work to keep iran from developing nuclear weapons. final details have to be worked out by june 30th. president obama said the deal is not based on trust alone but verification and he said the result is that the world will be safer. >> it is a good deal. a deal that meets our core

a series of small earthquakes have rattled the area in the last few days. a 2.6 quake hit morgan hill about 20 minutes before that and a 2.7 quake rattled san pablo yesterday morning. no injuries or damage was reported in any of those incidents. at uc berkeley seismologists get an early heads up when an earthquake is happening. that's thanks to their early warning system. >> rob roth talks about their efforts to expand the system throughout california. >> reporter: magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck just after mid-night followed by two smaller aftershocks. >> i was just about to go to sleep and i felt my bed moving

side to side. >> reporter: through the uc berkeley seismologist lab, the earthquake early warning system predicted the quake would hit berkeley a second and a half after hitting san ramon. >> someone can within a second stop, drop and hang on to protect themselves. >> reporter: when the earthquake hit napa, san francisco received a 10 second warning. that's because the epicenter was far away and that's enough time to stop a b.a.r.t. train. the early system measures the secondary waves of an earthquake from thousands of underground sensors. >> the earthquake early system is not an earthquake prediction. it's watching an earthquake begin and trying to send a signal out to people in the affected areas faster than the earthquake can get to them. >> reporter: many transportation agencies currently receive the alerts
