lived. >> celebrating a san jose police officer who's life was cut short. the touching tribute to michael johnson. mornings on 2 continues. good morning. thank you for joining us. friday morning, april 3rd i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve's got so much to talk about. >> there is a lot going on. weather wise it's pretty quiet today but by tonight and next week there will be plenty to discuss. the almost full moon. it will be full at 5:07. there will also be a lunar eclipse. it will only last five minutes. clear skies. there could be a little bit of fog over by the coast early or over night. i think it's okay for the giants, a's game tonight. mostly clear. northwest not as breezy as it was. 35 napa airport. could be a couple isolated areas. a lot of 40s. the breeze has tailed off. it's all over the place. it's north, west, south, and

east. it's variable. it's not as strong as it was. 49 water temp at bodega bay. i hi one of the coldest i have seen since last june. we need the up welling. so is this system coming in. tapping into moisture that will lead to increasing clouds saturday. today is nice. breezy. but not as breezy as it was. it will be a little warmer 60s and low 70s. these 70s will be long gone by the time we meet on monday again. they will be in the 50s. all right sal good friday. still quiet. everything all right? >> yeah we are still doing okay. we don't have a lot going on when it comes to traffic accidents and stalled vehicles. let's go outside and take a look at what we have now. traffic continues to look good on interstate 880. i think it will be slightly lighter than usual day today. this is a look at traffic moving well in both directions. this is a look at westbound bay bridge there is a backup here. it's backed up to the end of the parking lot.

that is about a 5-10 minute delay. and if you are driving on the richmond san rafael bridge we are off to a good start. let's go back to the desk. cameras caught a vicious attack on a homeless man in san francisco. now police want your help in catching the man who did it. paul chambers is in san francisco this morning and paul, this is just graphic video. hard to watch. >> reporter: that is correct, pam. i will tell you everyone who knew the man said he was very friendly including police. the man was attacked right here in this area. >> i heard the noise of a thunk and that was the pipe hitting the guys head. >> reporter: this video is very brutal. the man was sitting in his surge spot on a bucket in larkin street when the man in a blue shirt appears and pulls out what appears to be a pipe. he strikes the victim hitting him so hard the man goes limp as the pipe flies out of the

suspects hand. from there the suspect picks up the pipe and walks down the street passing people and never looking back. police say the victim got more than 508 stitches in his hand. a business owner in the area says although this is a disturbing incident, things like this happens all the time. [ inaudible ] >> this place is really getting worse here. >> reporter: here's another look at the suspect. he is 20-30 years of age. about 5'10" tall with dark hair. if caught the suspect is facing attempted murder charges. pam. >> thank you, paul. hopefully they find this person. 6:03 is the time. san francisco firefighterrers say an elderly man was killed in an apartment fire. they received an emergency call about a fire right near san

francisco street at 10:00 p.m.. the university crews on scene saw heavy smoke coming from a third floor apartment. >> they made their lead into the building at the center stairwell. had smoke conditions in the hallway. extinguished the fire. >> firefighters say they pulled out the elderly man from the apartment. he was unconscious and on the floor near a couch with oxygen tanks nearby. paramedics were not able to revive him. a second elderly person in the apartment was hurt but should be okay. the building did have fire alarms but no sprinkler system and the cause of that fire is still not known. this is the latest deadly fire in san francisco this year. other cases include a father and 13-year-old girl who were killed last month when their mission district department went up in flames. the teenager was in the hospital for a week before she died from her injuries. in january a man died in that

massive apartment building fire. and concerns are now rising about building safety and fire department responses in the neighborhood. the city is also trying to increase building inspections. san francisco police chief greg suhr plans disciplinary action against several police officers accused of exchanging racist and homophobic text messages. three officers will be suspended and chief sur will tell us if more officers will be punished. one has already resigned. the district attorney and public defender will review ten years of cases involving those officers to see if there is evidence of racial bias. former santa clara county supervisor will find out if he will go to jail for election fraud. he will be sentenced after pleading no contest to one felony count involving a deceptive campaign mailer. shirakawa admitted he created a campaign flier that helped a

friend win a san jose council election by insinuating the opponent was a communist sympathizer. shirakawa will receive community service and not jail time if he accepted responsibility for the crime. now that governor brown has ordered mandatory water restrictions, everyone is trying to figure out how to do their part. local hardware store says they sell a lot of devices that can help them reduce flow use. low flow toilets. >> i say we become more refined with water saving. it's called keep savings ca.

it calls on everyone to make permanent reductions in their every day watt herb use. water agencies plan to use billboards, radio, and social media to get the water across. california is in the fourth year of a drought. a group in san francisco that calls themselves friends of dolores park they plan a major trash cleanup at the park tomorrow. on their facebook page the creator of the group says if people don't start cleaning up after themselves, they won't be allowed into the park. he also starred a trash photo bomb movement. reminding people to pick up your garbage. it's not clear exactly when the trash cleanup will take place but the group says they wanted to become a regular thing. it is 6:07. we are learning new details about the deadly plane crash in the french alps. what the co-pilot did right before that crash. >> lost at sea for two months. what a fisherman did to stay

alive. >> it hasn't been that bad of a morning commute. so far. we're hoping it will stay light on this good friday. northbound 101 traffic looks good approaching the 80 split. >> and the weather will be good here once we get cranked up. might be a little chilly to start. another baseball forecast that is pretty good. things are really going to change over the weekend.

welcome back. time is 6:10. these are live pictures. not here. this is louisville, kentucky. this is a big boy. firefighters there battling a huge fire at a ge appliance park. and again these are live pictures. we still don't know what caused the fire. we are told the building has been evacuated. we hope so. we haven't heard of any injuries yet but the indications are the building is a total loss in these live pictures. here's video from earlier this morning. you can see it raging. ge appliance park is a large building. thousands of appliances are made and manufactured there. from dishwashers to military engines there. one of the warehouses at that spot is large enough to house 34 football fields. now on average about 13 appliances are shipped from that park every minute. we'll keep you posted on what is happening in this huge fire. again live pictures from louisville, kentucky. time is 6:11.

meantime two women have been arrested on federal terror charges in new york. reportedly they tried to build explosives. 28-year-old noel vil exnsas and asia sadeki. they were trying to build a home made bomb like the pressure cooker bombs used at the boston marathon bombing. they face possible life in prison if convicted on conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction. investigators say they also looked at isis propaganda online. the u.s. has reached an agreement on iran's nuclear program. president obama praised the agreement. iran is agreeing to limit its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. but the deal has its critics including many republicans in congress. >> if congress kills this deal not based on expert analysis

and without offering any reasonable alternative then it's the united states blamed. >> this morning israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu say he and his cabinet are united in strongly opposing the uranium deal. some people call it a miracle and i think they are right. isa sailor lost at sea for 66 days was found alive. this is off the coast of north carolina. the crew of that ship rescued him yesterday. he was spotted floating on a capsized sailboat and here he is walking already. he went out fishing back in january but somehow his boat lost its mass and capsized. the coast guard said he fished with a net he collected rainwater and rationed his food to stay alive. now he's got an injured shoulder. he was dehydrated but they say

otherwise he's okay. seismologists got an early heads up before the series of earthquakes hit the bay area wednesday and thursday. rob roth reports on the experts to expand an early warning system throughout california. >> reporter: the magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck just after midnight. followed by two smaller after shocks. >> i was just about to go to sleep and i felt my bed move from side to side. >> reporter: the earthquake early warning system detected the quake would reach berkeley a second and a half after it struck san ramon. >> somebody can within a second or two drop cover and hold on and protect their own selves. >> reporter: when the magnitude 6 .0 earthquake struck napa last august, seismologists received a five second warning. san francisco about ten seconds. that is because the epicenter of that quake was farther away than the one in san ramon.

and that is enough teem to stop a bart train. >> the earthquake early warning system is is not earthquake prediction. it is watching an earthquake begin and trying to send a signal out to people in the effected areas faster than the earthquake can get to them. >> reporter: many of the response teams currently receive the alerts but seismologists are working to expand to a public earthquake warning system. that will take about $80 million over five years. they are asking congress, state lawmakers, and private parties to chip in. >> other parts of the state besides the bay area have very sparse coverage. >> reporter: seismologists say it will take two years to install a statewide system if and when they get the money. rob ross. draper university until san mateo will be the star of a new

reality tv series. it's called start-up you. it follows a class of 40 students through a seven week entrepreneurship program at draper. at the end the students get to pitch their business ideas to investors. it was a failed ballot measure to split up california in six states. filming for the reality tv show will start april. the ten episode series will premier late this summer. favorite 80s and 90s sitcom set in san francisco could be making a come back. netflix is close to ordering a 13 episode spin off of full house. it's called fuller house. the original full house ran for eight seasons. the new show candice cameron

would reprize her role as oldest daughter dj. >> they are creating. bringing back a lot of those old shows. coach and all of these reunion shows. >> my kids have seen full house on the old rerun channels. i want to tell sal. you were asking financed good friday and -- i were asking about good friday and stock markets. they are closed. when unemployment numbers come out, monday is a bad trading day. it could be poor stock. >> i see. for the commute, pam. thank you for that information. for the commute that means fewer people will be going to the office. and we are expecting a little bit of a lighter commute out there as we look at these live pictures. we look at highway 24 through lafayette and the traffic is moving along pretty well. there are no major problems.

it does continue to look good all the way through and it hasn't been a bad commute on to the oakland side. also looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, it looks like everything is standstill here. and that is always troublesome. that means something is going on. if you look to the right, the car pool lanes are generally not stopped. you can -- so something has happened here. it looks like there is an injury accident westbound on the bay bridge just west of treasure island. it looks like there is a motorcycle accident. we are going to try to get a camera up on to the bridge for you and check it out. obviously this is bad for the bay bridge. it had been pretty light. and this is a look now at the commute here in marin. it does look good. there is a problem on the bay bridge. you can see the road sensors here are showing us a bunch of slow traffic up to the treasure island area. we're on it. we'll let you know a little bit more about that coming up.

easter egg hunting? no pressure there. before 10:00 a.m. is going to be my possess-- will be my guess. but it look os be coming in after 10:00. and it's a colder system. and it's moving in. 40s for some. 35 napa airport. that is down 15-degrees from yesterday. and fairfield down about the same. they lose that northerly breeze. there is a slight component of it but not much. it's kind of variable east, north, south, west. 49 bodega bay. 49 the water temp there. the coldest i have seen since last june. i can't remember if it's that cold. san francisco buoy 53. these would be normal to slightly below. 18 in truckee. 40s through the interior. including sacramento rather cool. blue canyon at 40 degrees. everything looks good today. if you are are heading up to the mountains, good.

the leading edge of the system the moisture is being tapped into this low coming out of the gulf of alaska. and i present to you this looks gorgeous on your 65-inch high definition tv. it starts sunday and takes us into early next week. mild and warm today. it looks good. looks good. but then increasing clouds on saturday. low clouds and high clouds maybe late saturday to the north but then on sunday that will sweep through and the highs on monday and tuesday could only be in the upper 50s for many. sunny and nice and breezy. 60s and 70s on your temps. mid 70s. these will be the temps we will see for awhile. we could get out enjoy it since january. today a lot of 70s here. low to mid. 60s on the coast. low 70s on the peninsula. a little cooler tomorrow and increasing clouds and a cloudy, cold pattern. sunday, monday especially monday night and tuesday with snow in the mountains.

welcome back to mornings on 2. our time 16:25. san francisco police looking for witnesses to an attack at the japanese tea garden in golden gate park. it happened last friday. three people with a gun attacked a couple and during the struggle one of the victims suffered head injuries. the robbers stole a camera and purse. and police say later in the day they arrested three people near candle stick park and they believe they are the attackers. the investigation is still going on and you witnessed anything san francisco police want to hear from you. president obama is checking another state off his list. the president arrived in utah last night. he is set to make a speech on the there later today. it is the first time president obama has visited the beehive state as president. that leaves south dakota as the only state he has not visited.

president george w. bush visited every u.s. state but vermont. bill clinton and h.w. bush got to all 50 states during their presidency. a mother in southern california delivered her baby in a very unusual spot. she was two days over her due date and in labor when she decided to go to a courtroom to make a payment. while she was there, the contractions started. 15 minutes apart. before she knew it she gave birth to that beautiful little baby boy in the hallway of the courthouse thanks to the help of a sheriffs deputy. >> one contraction where you know it's about to happen hit me and i went down to my knees and he was coming. >> and i put my hands down there and the baby's head comes out and the rest of the body slid into my hands. >> the baby is grinning right there. people cheered as the little bay boy boy came into the world. the mom and baby are doing just

>> it looks sunday, monday, and tuesday. >> three days of rain. >> not continuous. but one sunday and another one monday night and tuesday. i know monday sal and i have touched on this. we will do our best. we do our best. it is clear out there. there was a couple reports of half-moon bay airport. it will be nice today, sunny. some of those taking aim at mendocino county. mostly clear tonight. patchy low clouds forming. system is on its way. again over night best bet would be some of the higher elevations or inland. we all have a lunar eclipse of 5:00 a.m.. it only lasts around -- 30s and 40s for most.

it will be slightly warmer. 60s and low to mid 70s. but after today it will be more 50s and 60s as we head toward the weekend and early next week. all right sal things still quiet? >> actually you know things are not that bad expect for one thing, steve and that is the bay bridge. we had an earlier motorcycle stent on the pan. the good news it turned out o be a noninjury accident so they were able to clear it from the span. for awhile things were slow. but you can see traffic is moving well now get into san francisco. once you make it on the bridge. now when you get to the bridge, you can see that at the toll plaza it's very, very slow. it had been lighter than usual. but now we are sold out all the way out to the maze. traffic is bayly moving unless you are in the car pool lane. so please allow yourself extra time. this will take a little bit to thin out. the only good thing we have is that it's expected to be lighter than usual today. this might thin out in the next hour or so. but if you're trying to get to

the city using your car, it will be a bad one for now. all right let's talk about the san mateo bridge. could be decent alternate for you heading out to the high- rise and over to the peninsula that way. dumbarton bridge looks lighter than usual. a brutal attack caught on camera in san francisco. now police are asking for the public's help to find the attacker. paul chambers is in san francisco this morning talking about the weapon used and the serious, serious injuries to the victims. horrifying video, paul. >> very true, pam. it was said the attack happened in this area out here where we are standing. word out here on the street the two men may have had prior contact. >> i just heard people saying they have some incident happen. but i never seen the guy. i've never seen him before. >> the video is disturbing. police say the homeless man was very friendly. in the night the attack happened he was in his usual

spot. when this man in a blue shirt pulls out of nowhere with a pipe and hits him. he trikes the victim hitting him so hard that the pipe flies out of his hand. less say the victim got more than 50 stitches in his heads. they are look for the attacker that left him bleeding on the sidewalk. >> when you see an act so blatant and so raw like this, it's uncalled for. and in san francisco we'd like to send a strong message to anybody who lives in our city or visits our city that if you attack the homeless, there will be a consequence. >> reporter: if caught the suspect could be charged with attempted murder. here's a look at the suspect. police say he is 20-30 years of age. about 5'10" with dark hair cut short on the sides. once again police say if you

have seen this person you are encouraged to give him a call. that was a pretty violent act on the homeless man. >> thank you, paul. police are searching for answers this morning after a man was found shot to death in hayward. the shooting happened shortly before 10:00 last night on jefferson street when police arrived they found 22-year-old william pacheco with a gunshot wound to the face. no arrests have been made. more than 8,000 people paid tribute to san jose police officer michael johnson who was killed in the line of duty. hearse carrying officer johnson's casket led the presession. there fellow officers from around the bay area and the nation saluted as it passed underneath a giant american flag hanging from a ladder truck. now inside the service, there were tears, there was laughter, speaker shared stories about officer johnson who included

his older sister jamie. >> whenever we played cops and robbers as kids, he always insisted on being the cops and i had to be the bad guy. >> jamie thanked the san jose police department and the community for their support. in front of the stage was office johnson's casket. it was draped with the american flag. there was also a photo tribute showing officer johnson with his wife, his parents, and sister and a neat and a nephew. >> mike loved his pamly with his entire heart and he expressed his love by being present. >> also speaking yesterday one of officer johnson's academy classmates. officer dave salise. noticed that the sap center is usually a place where you cheered and saluted your athletes. he said officers johnson

deserved his own standing ovation. that standing ovation lasted for about a minute. yesterday's memorial service was followed by a private burial at the oak hill funeral home in memorial park in san jose. thousands of police officers from all over the country came to salute their fallen brother. our ktvu crews saw officers from as far away as new york, dallas, chicago. they came from all over the state of california to pay their respects. >> i hope that the san jose police department is able to start their healing process once they lay their brother to rest. >> marathon two years ago at that very same venue the santa cruz police department mourned the death of two of their own also killed in the line of duty. we have many more photos and video from the memorial service. go to ktvu.com, look in the featured story section at the top of the page.

happening today 35 police cadets from the oakland police department academy will graduate. the oakland police department is trying to increase the number of officers on its force and in november the number of people to graduate from the academy reached a four-year high. the oakland police department is looking for recruits. today is the deadline to turn in applications for the next academy class. the giants hope to even up the bay bridge series with the a's. they have struggled a bit during spring training. tara moriarty is joining us from inside at & t park this morning. >> reporter: we're in the area known as peanut heaven but to a lot of people it's simply heaven. take a look at this view. we have the bay, the marina, the little baseball diamond and the coke bottle slide. all of the bleachers have been cleaned and the field is looking gorgeous. a lot of sea gals. they are the only ones out here besides ourselves. at 7:15 tonight this stadium will be packed with thousands of fans decked out in green and

gold and orange and black. last night it was the a's that were on fire beating the giants 8-2. a's shortstop and bay area native marcus semem hit a solo home run. oakland knocked the giants starter jake peevey out of the game in the third. pagan and belt hit home runs. >> it's a rebuilding year. we have a lot of new players. i hope this year we go all the way. >> this is the year we break the streak and win our second one in a row. >> reporter: so baseball is back but they are not sure if matt duffy is. meanwhile the two teams are back at it again tonight with matt cane facing rookie kendall grazeman. i'm tara moriarty, back to you.

welcome back. new this morning. investigators say the black box data recorder on the germanwings plane that crashed in the french alps shows the co- pilot accelerated the plane as it plunged toward the mountains. the recorder shows the co-pilot put the plane into a decent and then repeatedly adjusted the auto pilot to speed it up.

prosecutors say andreas lubitz locked the pilot out of the. gunman with the al-shabab terror group went into the university at dawn yesterday when most of the muslim students were in a mosque. they went into dorms asking who was a christian and who was muslim and they shot and killed any christians on the spot. san francisco police are searching for a female hit and run driver whop hit three cyclists and two cars. one of the cars ended up crashing into a garage near scott and fell street yesterday. one of the cyclists was thrown 20 feet and suffered serious injuries. the other two were treated at the scene. a neighbor says he saw the whole thing. >> hit a white car.

ran into the gray car which ran into the house which pinned two bicyclists over to the left and one guy over to the right. >> people tried to tell the driver to stop but she sped off in her black jeep cherokee. officers say they do have her license plate number so it's likely a matter of time before they find her. police in daly city hope you can help them track down two men accused of attacking and robbing a taxi driver. here's surveillance images of the suspects. the cab driver said he picked up two men. he later is dropped them off. as the terror -- the man punched him and stole all of his money. the port of oakland says operations are nearly back to normal after a labor dispute. a backlog of ships is now gone.

oakland could still experience some delays as a ripple effect from southern california ports where there is still congestion. a tentative deal reached in february between shippers and dock workers still needs to be ratified by the union. the latest unemployment numbers were released and we're notioning a change. job gains were below 200,000. only 126,000 jobs were added in march. growth has been impacted by winter weather and factories shut downs this year. markets closed on friday. today. good friday. but on monday it could be a down day.

>> dating sites have always been big but religious dating sites are really booming. there are 1500 in fact. we'll explain why these are growing in popularity even though some experts say religion is becoming less important for today's young singles. those are some of the stories we are working on for the next hour of mornings on 2. now back to you. a 68-year-old oakland man named bah bubba he survived a whole house collapsed on top of him and they are calling it the miracle on 46th street. >> i fell down. can you believe that? >> oh yeah. you heard him. the house fell down right on top of him. crosby powell everybody calls him bubba. he was sleeping inside the house when it collapsed. the house is being remodeled to add a second story to to it.

neighbors rushed over and pulled him to safety and he didn't have a scratch on him. mr. powell says the television created a space from keeping him from being crushed. it's been a rough couple of days for him. >> yesterday i got bit by a pit bull. today a house fell on me. do have a look at the improving bay bridge. we had an earlier motorcycle accident and i'm very happy to say that the motorcyclist even though he dumped his bike near treasure island did not suffer major injuries. able to get up and walk out. but the lanes were blocked for a bit. they did send medic and fire for a bit. the toll plaza did get pretty heavy. it was light until that crash happened about almost an hour ago. not quite. but now it's very heavy. it's going to take awhile for this to unwind. either take a car pool if you can. take bart. or just wait a bit for this bridge traffic to get a little bit better. if you're driving to the san mateo bridge perhaps you want to use an alternate route. we've had a couple crashes on westbound 580. still not causing any big delays. it's definitely a little lighter than usual today. let's go to steve. thank you. on this friday morning they have clear skies. a little cool for some.

miles an hour. bodega bay 49. san francisco buoy 53. 16 up in truckee. 41 redding. the system is still up on the north coast but some increasing clouds from mendocino county and lake county. all until advance of this system. yes, it's tap into moisture here. it will enhance it a little bit. this will all settle on us as we head into sunday, monday, and tuesday. it will still be a lovely friday. mostly sunny here. rain returns and a lot of cloud cover and cooler temps on sunday. this is our timeline here. i think for most areas it will be okay but increasing clouds on saturday. rain sweep into the area on sunday with snow up in the mountains and even better system monday and tuesday.
