thank you. san francisco police police chief said today that the department's crime lab, he spoke about the department's crime lab where allegations of misconduct are prompting the review of hundreds of cases. the lab has come under intense scrutiny for alleged errors including dunbar and her supervisor. they are accused of violating testing standards on dna analysis in a case involving a child molestation suspect. today, chief suhr said they flunked a proficiency exam and have been on personal leave. he assured the public that few, if any convictions are in jeopardy because of the alleged misconduct, and he promised a thorough review. our dna crime lab is sound. our proficiency tests work. they are meant to catch deficiencies. people acted immediately to unplug people who are deficient. >> the latest scandal comes

following an investigation five years ago. >> new developments tonight, an arrest after we showed you the startling video of what police say is an unprovoked attack. that attack happened wednesday night. homeless man was sitting in his usual spot on larkin street. live from the hall of justice. john, the injury here was devastating. >> reporter: gasia, the victim is now in critical condition with a wound that needed more than 50 stitches to close. this video from wednesday night is very disturbing. you can see on the video, the homeless man sitting on the left side as the attacker walks by, pulls something out like a metal pipe, winds up and hits the man in the side of the head and fell to the ground unconscious. he was quickly taken to the hospital where his condition is unstable. arthur lee jones was arrested last night for the attack on the same corner where it happened. police spokesman was personally affected by this case.

thank you. a crash in the north bay today killed a person who was flying an ultra light airplane. it happened about 12:30 this afternoon near the petaluma municipal airport. a spokesperson for the sheriff's department said the ntsb will investigate the crash. the pilot was the only person on board, the quick silver mxl2. there's no word yet on the pilot's name or what may have caused the crash. there could be rain ahead for the holiday weekend. for that, let's bring in our meteorologist for our chief, bill martin. what are we expecting? >> gasia, the first system won't be a strong one, but enough to remind us what rain looks like. maybe a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch across the region. clear skies over san francisco bay, but by tomorrow afternoon, that will be changing. you can see a few high clouds dropping into the northern parts of the state. but fairly quiet right now, but look at all this cold air developing up into the pacific here, up to the north and west. this will be approaching the bay area.

a veteran firefighter injuredded in a horrifying fall is in critical condition tonight. captain pete duran was walking along the roof in fresno last weekend. and you'll see what happens. he fell right inside. there it is right there. the fire chief in fresno said that duran was burned over 70% of his body and most of those burns are serious enough that they will require skin grafts. he is set to have more surgery on monday. an online fund raising page has

andreas lubitz used the auto pilot and then he adjusted it to speed up. this comes after the first examination of the black box flight data recorder that was found in the wreckage yesterday. all 150 people on board died instantly when that plane slammed into the mountainside and desin grated on impact. >> we are hearing an incredible story of survival from a sailor who went missing more than two months ago. louis jordan was found yesterday. crew members from a german flag ship found him on the overturned hull of his boat. jordan was dehydrated and he had injured his shoulder. the 37-year-old south carolina man said his boat capsized when he headed out back in january. >> i woke up and the whole boat had turned around and i was flying through the air, sommer somersaulting.

home. in pittsburgh, ktvu fox 2 news. >> in san jose, a settlement was reached today in the audrey polt wrongful death case against two teenagers. audrey pot hung herself in 2012 after boys took pictures of her. she was afraid pictures would be spread around school. one teen settled and the trial was just beginning against the other two and today, their families agreed to pay audrey pot's family $950,000. the teens also stood up in court and apologized to her parents and they agreed to speak publicly about the dangers of alcohol and sexting. >> now to the south bay where the bomb squad today exploded a suspicious package found on a sidewalk in san jose. the package was spotted 7:45 this morning near the intersection of stockton and taylor, and the college park cal train station.

police cordenned off the area, but did not order anyone to evacuate. explosive experts said the package contained batteries wrapped in tape with some wires exposed. >> a major expansion is in the works for people who use the bay area's bike share service. officials say that a pilot program in san francisco is so successful, they are planning to add thousands more bikes and expand into the east bay. ktvu's christina rendoan tells us which areas will get the bikes in the future. >> reporter: plans in the works to roll out up to 7,000 more bikes in the bay area bike share program. a big increase from the 700 bikes in the pilot program now. >> peter lives in oakland and is excited to hear the proposed expansion would be oakland, berkeley, would get bikes for the first time. >> we need shared bikes in berkeley, oakland, there's not a lot of bikes over there. >> the san francisco pilot program was so successful, the

regulators set a deadline for shutting down more oil field wells. they are trying to protect water supplies from oil waste water. regulators will begin shutting down hundreds more of these wells by october 15. the move follows state and federal probes that found california's natural resources agency had allowed oil companies to inject waste water into protected aquafirs. the state has already shut down more than 20 of these improperly permitted injection wells. >> after reports of a strong odor in san jose, police discovered a meth lab in an empty apartment. located in the cherry woods apartments. once officers got inside, they found materials and chemicals used to make methamphetamine. a hazardous material's crew responded to remove the chemicals.

police haven't yet identified or found the tenant. a group in san francisco is planning a major trash cleanup at a park tomorrow. they call themselves the friends of delores park. on their facebook page, the creator of the group is asking people to take responsibility to keep delores park clean. this comes after a string of vandalism there. he also has started a trash photo bomb movement to remind people to pick up their garbage. the group is hoping this cleanup will become a regular thing. palo alto based tessla has good news. rose 55% in the first quarter compared to the same time one year ago. sales totaled more than 10,000 cars and tessla is on track. the base price, about $80,000. the company plans to launch an suv version later this year. the golden state warriors have joined a movement to try to stop bullying here in the bay area. >> bullying should never be tolerated. >> not on our ground. >> not in our town.

punch on tuesday. much cooler with temperatures only in the mid to upper 50s for afternoon highs. and low snow levels in the sierra. they could have chain controls and a dusting as frank mentioned here in the bay area. right now, not too much happening. mostly clear skies over here. you can see a few high clouds approaching parts of mend mendocino county. this is the very cold air that will be moving into the region. you'll notice it beginning tomorrow, but especially by sunday. as far as winds, a bit of a breeze out there on average, around 10 to 15 miles per hour. napa, a wind gust of 24 miles an hour at last check and more reports with san jose 16. sfo, that's sustained at 25. gusting to 36 miles an hour. tomorrow, the transition day. partly cloudy for your saturday as that cool air begins to approach the region. the first round of rain moves into the region. sunday for easter with some scattered rain showers. this is not a big storm at all. rain fall amounts will probably be on the order of a tenth to

dmv says it didn't expect to reach that number until the end of july. some 200,000 have received their driver's licenses. president obama today announced a new jobs initiative to help put veterans to work in the solar energy sector. the president made his announcement at a solar panel farm on hill air force base in utah. he said his new solar ready vets program will allow thousands of former service members to be trained to install, operate, and develop solar technologies. under the initiative solar training programs will be established at ten military bases across our country. >> what i'm doing here today is highlight the fact that the solar industry is actually adding jobs ten times faster than the rest of the economy. >> president obama says expanding the solar industry will strengthen national security by reducing the country's dependence on foreign oil. today's announcement comes days after the obama administration cut greenhouse gas emissions by a third over the next decade. spring break is coming and that means a lot of folks will be headed to the airport.
