it was a miracle no one was hurt. >> reporter: police say a bystander yesterday spotted 33- year-old kwame harris behind the wheel of his car. half parked in a driveway near 14th street. mese say they connect -- police say they connected the car to two earlier crimes. >> turns out the car was involved is in two hit and run incidents. >> the vehicle collided with an rv. >> reporter: no one was injured but he assaulted an officer. >> they attempted to handcuff him. the suspect did attempt to bite the officer in the hand. thankfully the officer was not hurt. >> reporter: he played played for the 9ers from 2003 to 2007 before playing for the raiders in 2000 weight. in 2013 he became -- 2008. in 2013 he came out as gay

francisco. it started about 10:40 a.m. this morning when police spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a carjacking three days ago. the driver took off heading for the bridge and police alerted the highway patrol. minutes later it ended in san francisco when the car crashed. >> we heard crunch, crunch. he hit the red car and the other car. we were trying to move over and he was shoving through everybody. >> the driver and another person in the vehicle were taken into custody. caltrans is investigating a new concern about the eastern span of the bay bridge. one of the rods may have snapped after it was installed. it may be 6 inches shorter. the other rods are okay. caltrans is planning more tests to figure out why that sod shorter and wants -- rod is shorter and wants to make sure

the bar honoring emilio nevarez, a guitarist for punk rock bank the lucky eejits. he was killed by a stray bullet. he came from a musical family. >> he was an incredible musician and he worked -- musician and he worked very hard and he -- he started out very young. you know, kindergarten playing. and in high school he wanted to play. >> reporter: her son worked as an audio engineer and loved playing with his band. >> we have a large family. and having a really difficult time with it. he is always going to be in our hearts. >> the shooting happened after 1:00 a.m. easter morning. two men got into an argument, one returned with a gun and

started shooting. emilio nevarez was hit. >> i am 100% certain in saying the individual was toteally not involved -- totally not involved. >> surveillance video show security guards rushing to try to help. members of the lucky eejits were upset as they stopped by this afternoon. they will miss his smile. >> he was one of those people that would -- you immediately felt at home with him. just welcome, warm presence. >> reporter: there has been support on social media for the band, the family and the young musician lost too soon. >> reporter: the bar owner shared a statement saying we bow our heads in mourning and welcome the community it add to this memorial out front and they are planning a benefit that they will give us more information on in the coming

days and friends, family and the police are asking anyone with information about what happened out here sunday morning to come forward so they can catch the killer. >> all right. cara liu live in oakland. thank you for that live report. a cable car operator was sent to the hospital after being hit to a van while off loading passengers about 10:30 a.m. this morning. authorities say the conductor was seen crawling out from beneath the van following the crash. no word on the operator's condition or what caused the accident. many drivers, pedestrians and bicyclist were stunned to learn about a bay area bridge closure. a two year construction project is set for the embarcadero bridge in oakland. and ktvu's john fowler discovered businesses and commuters felt blind sided and predicting a traffic nightmare. >> reporter: it is called the

the answers that you need because there are people with now who will help you to fight for those answers. >> a caravan from mexico arrived in the bay area last week on their way to washington, d.c. to talk to lawmakers about the issue. jurors in the boston marathon bombings trial will begin deliberations tomorrow morning. today they heard final arguments. the defense admitted dzhokhar tsarnaev took part in the bombing. the report on how attorneys are trying to save him from a death penalty. >> this was a rare case where defense attorneys admitted their client's guilt, he killed innocent victims. prosecutors paint dzhokhar tsarnaev as a terrorists. the defense says he was influenced by his big brother. prosecutors say they had the same goal, to terrorize american and kill its citizens.

detailed the story of a student whasaid she was attacked -- who said she was attacked that fraternity house. police said no evidence could be found to back up her claims. the report says the author may have been unintentionally bias in her attempt. >> she was very sympathetic to the victims of sexual assault that she interviewed at uva and at other universities. and that she felt something had to be done for them. >> the story sparked protests and the suspension of activities at uva. raising concerns other victims of assault would be discouraged from coming forward. he says the administration has been focused on the issue since before the article was published. creating a special task force. >> the task force released recommendations about now federal government could toughthen sanctions we put -- toughthen sanctions we put in -- toughen the sanctions we put

before lawmakers on wednesday. it will repeal the personal belief exemption. california allows exemptions based on personal beliefs. some believe the measure could pass in california because this is where the measles outbreak first started. a new report raises question about mammograms and the cost of incorrect diagnosis. $4billion are spent on false positives. the cost is higher than previously estimated. the american cancer society recommends annual screenings for women starting at age 40. breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women and mammograms can detect it. a report suggest apple had construction workers fired at its new campus in cupertino.

several of the construction workers hired to build the campus were ordered to leave in january because they had prior felony convictions. they said that is not the norm because employers don't typically run background checks on those who do construction works. they said they are focused on quality and safety and those who were dismissed had a felony conviction in the past 7 years. sheriff's deputies arrested a woman yesterday accused of a slew of crimes. including setting a woman on fire. ktvu's debora villalon spoke with a victim who was doused with lighter fluid. >> what are you doing? what are you doing. >> terrifying encounter. finding a woman spray painting rapist on her driveway and realizing it is the same car, same woman who came on her property and started a fire

last week. >> started spraying me with car choler lighter. -- charcoal lighter. >> reporter: what she didn't know her attacker set a house on fire across the highway. dousing the electrical box with lighter fluid and torching it. >> i didn't see any matches. she was spraying me all over. chasing me and spraying me. >> reporter: lighter fluid in her eyes but still holding on to the woman. she finally got help from drivers passing by. >> an off duty firefighter saw the assault, stopped and rendered aid to the person that was being assaulted and detained the assailant. >> rapists, murderer. >> reporter: residents were started to find the words

rapist and murder spray painted. she targeted this house before. bringing boxes and trying to move in. also convinced someone who raped her lives in the vicinity. >> woman face down in the driveway with one of the deputy sheriffs. >> residents who saw her during the commotion didn't recognize her from the neighborhood. >> she was yelling get off me. but at that point she had a guy sitting on her back and she was cuffed. >> she had been scratching me on the neck. >> the homeowner has no regrets. she says the woman had a pile of spray paint and lighter fluid with her and wasn't done with her rampage. >> madness. crazy. we have no explanation. we don't know this woman. >> i hope they can help her so she doesn't think there is

it is opening day for major league baseball and after busy off season the a's fans are about to get a closer look that new 2015 team. and right now the anticipation is building. a's fans get ready for tonight's home game against the texas rangers that gets underway in a couple hours. scott reiss live from the coliseum where the stage is set for the a's home opener. >> opening day is not officially a holiday but for baseball fans it is one of the most festive days of the year. -- days of the year. it is a first, divorce papers served via facebook. a judge in new york city okayed sending a private message as a last report. the report from new york. she talked with the lawyer of the estranged wife. >> reporter: she came um-- he came up with the idea of serving divorce papers on facebook after he tried everything he could think of to contact his client's husband

who has been allusive for 5 years. >> gone through many hoops. speaking to him on the phone, asking him to come into the office. he refused. performing a department of motor vehicles search. performing a search with his post office at the last known address. came back negative. we hired a private investigators. >> but everything came up empty. his client wanted a divorce. the only contact she had with her husband is by phone and facebook. so a judge ruled that the lawyer could serve him divorce papers on facebook. >> he said divorce law come into the technological age. >> reporter: this is the message he sent for two straight week. he is sending the same message again this week. if he does not show up and sign

the divorce papers the attorney can move forward with the divorce without him. he says using social media as a vehicle for divorces will not become the norm. >> has to be realized by everyone this is a service as a last resort. only under these circumstances, when everything else fails is this to be used. there are several inches of fresh snow in the sierra. dozen of people hit the slopes during the easter weekend. a few resorts are still open. many ski areas shut down last month. some say the snow is too little too late, they still say they will take whatever they could get. they are about to get more according tabill. now -- to bill. now to the weather center for what we can expect.

diego that is too crazy to believe. a 62-year-old man was posing with a trophy fish aboard this boat yesterday when the unbelievable happened. a 300-pound sea lion jumped out of the water, on to the boat grabbed the man's hand and dragged him to the bottom of the bay. >> never heard of this before. >> the man got away and swam to the service where they pulled him to safety. officials say he was under water for 20 seconds and sustained puncture wounds and cuts. he will be okay. authorities say hungry sea lions are known to become aggressive. coming up, a place families spent their summers, now a push to keep san jose's family camp in yosemite from closing its doors. >> a look at what we are

live storm tracker 2 showing a strong system approaching the bay area. >> that system will bring heavy rain and wind over night and tonight crews are preparing for the worse. good evening. i am ken wayne. frank somerville is off. >> i am yulee h. -- julie haener. as you can see from live pictures outside the studios, the clouds, well, they have moved in. it is a welcome sight, especially during a drought and we have live team coverage on the storm. ktvu's cristina rendon talked with crews and homeowners as they repair. we -- prepare. we begin with chief meteorologist bill martin tracking the conditions for us. >> the system is easy to pick out. you can see it to the north of us. it is a good looking system. on a scale of 1-10, a 6-1/2. that is amazing. great we are getting rain. we could see an inch of rain in some places. most will get a half inch.

do to prepare. >> reporter: that's right. still a couple hours before the storm hits. folks at home you have time to get outside, wipe away the debris near the gutters or the storm drains, unclog the gutters and trim trees and you wouldn't be the only ones preparing. pg&e has additional crews on stand by ready for the storm and ready for the outages. >> reporter: power lines and trees don't mix when a storm is on the way. it is why he says pg&e tree crews are always trimming branches. >> have flash lights on hand with fresh batteries. don't use candles for safety purposes. >> reporter: after a long time without rain, oakland residents after the too worried. -- aren't too worried. >> we are good to go. >> reporter: he just plans to ride out the storm. >> we will ride it out.
