a bay area ranch is hit by cattle raselers. >> a troubling crime at a quiet ranch in castro valley. livestock shot dead, mutilated, and stolen. now the alameda county sheriff's office is investigating. knew el walker talked to the owner today. she's live at the sheriff's substation in san leandro with the disturbing details. >> reporter: sheriff's investigators are rying to figure out who shot three cows and stole a calf. the rancher says this is going

to be a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. he has so many acres it took more than a week to realize his missing cows were in fact shot dead. >> reporter: nothing tells you, you're just a half hour from the city. >> there's always bad things happening in the city. bad things happening in the country too. >> reporter: this long, windy road brought trouble to the ranch. someone along this road shot three cows dead in the passenger. >> they're not very far. >> reporter: about 15 miles from the road. it happened about a week ago. the cattle rancher reported it after he couldn't find a few cows on his 300-acre ranch. then he spotted them in this pasture. now they're graves. two of the cows were pregnant, due in a month. one had her ear cut off like a trophy. >> maybe it's something that makes them feel good that they

did it. it's not cool, and i wish i found the people, i'll tell you that much. >> there is also a calf missing, likely stolen. in all about a $50,000 loss in business. >> it just bugs you, there's people out here that would do that kind of thing. >> reporter: the alameda county sheriff's office is investigating. they found .9-millimeter bullet casings on the roadside today. he's moved his cattle to a pasture away from the road. >> look at them, they're awesome. they just get to be out here in nature all day long, working with animals. that's what i love to do. >> reporter: he's carrying on a tradition. five generations of ranchers. he'd be happy if the person who shot his cows got caught. the rancher told us his cows are pretty mellow, and that

might have made them pretty easy targets. >> live in san leandro tonight, noel, thank you. now to developing news, there's been a deadly accident on the upper deck of the bay bridge tonight. it happened about 8:20 in the westbound lanes on the san francisco side of the bridge. you can see emergency crews still on the scene, and traffic just creeping by. the highway patrol says the motorcyclest went down, and as many as five other vehicles may have been involved. emergency workers closed four of the five lanes, causing a huge traffic backup heading into the city tonight. you can see it there. just a few minutes before 10:00, all of the lanes were reopened. although the highway patrol says traffic is still slow getting across the bridge. there is no word on the identity of that motorcyclist who was killed. now to our weather and the return of some much needed rain arriving in the next few hours. this is a live picture of the flags at jack london square in oakland, as the leading edge of the storm approaches.

>> bill martin is tracking the rain, and some colder temperatures that could bring some snow to the bay area's highest peaks. we haven't seen much of that. >> this is a nice looking weather system. not unusual for this time of year. unusual for this year, period, but for this time of year, in a typical winter, we get systems like this. it's a cold one. it's a vigorous system. on a scale of 1 to 10, i'd give it a 6.5. maybe an inch of rain. in the mountains, a foot or two of snow. a winter storm warning will go into effect tomorrow. the radar spinning shows where the showers are right now. you can see them just to the north of us. this is the main band right here. it slides through the area in the next 12 hours or so. the rain's going to get heavy. how heavy? take a look. here we are, the forecast models suggest it, 1:00 a.m. after midnight, this is what it looks like. the winds will be picking up, then boom, right there. 2 to 3:00 a.m. this is really going up. we might see a thunderstorm.

respect and dignity to the office. there is an election tomorrow in san jose. 10 candidates are running for the senate seat in 54. the eventual winner replaces canton chu. election officials say they expect voter turn out to be low. silicon valley executive says she is in the middle of making decisions in the possible appeal of her sexism case. last week, pao lost a trial against her former employer. she told the wall street journal, the ordeal was worth it. she said it opened a conversation about gender bias in silicon valley and beyond. bay area air quality regulators took a controversial proposal to homeowners tonight. they outlined a plan that would ban all woodburning fireplaces

final arguments today, and are set to begin deliberate rations tomorrow morning. guilty verdicts are anticipated, setting the stage for the penalty phase of the trial. >> the prosecution paints dzhokhar tsarnaev as a cold blooded killer. the defense admits he's guilty of the bombing, but also says he's a victim of an overbearing older brother. defense attorney judy clark admits her client participated in the boston marathon bombing, but says he was a follower, not an evil mastermind. she says he was a misguided college student who became radicalized by his older brother. it's ahead of the next phase of the trial. >> in terms of sympathy, in terms of mitigation, what did the prosecution present though? this is very interesting. they're trying to set a picture too for the death penalty phase. >> reporter: most are expecting a guilty verdict, but the speed

life of a young singer. remembering her son tonight for his free spirit and passion for music. >> reporter: a memorial outside oakland's goldenville bar, honoring emilio nevarez. he was killed by a stray bullet that wasn't meant for him. his mother says emilio, who was 26 came from a musical family. >> he was an incredible musician, and he worked very hard, and he started out very young in kindergarten playing the trumpet, and in high school he wanted to play the guitar. >> reporter: bernadette valadez tells us her son worked as an audio engineer, and loved playing with his band on the weekends. he was supposed to be the best man in his brother's wedding. >> we love the video, and he's

say we bow our heads in sincere mourning, and say they are planning for a memorial benefit to help the band members and family. in oakland, cara liu, fox 2 news. the fraternity accused in a controversial rolling stone article in a importanted gang rape is threatening to sue the magazine. rolling stone retracted the article, and discredited the story. today, the fraternity promised to take all available legal action saying it has been defamed. so far, there are no signs anyone will be fired at the magazine, which was founded here in the bay area as a cultural icon for music and politics. new legal trouble for a former raider, and 49er. the charges include hit-and- run, and driving under the influence. >> in about a half hour, lane

new at 10:00, a series of street closures for one of san francisco's busiest corridors. police are beginning a partial closure of van ness avenue. the closures are expected to start at 11:00 p.m. tonight, where they're being a brand new hospital. live at the site where workers are bringing out the orange cones. >> reporter: those cones are out right now, ken. the plan, as you mentioned is to build the tunnel underneath van ness, about 124 feet right across this is a partial closure tonight, but starting friday, it will be a full

closure, and that could cause confusion on one of san francisco's busiest streets. the sun was shining over california's newest hospital. alongside the gaping hole, the looming street closures are casting a shadow of doubt. >> our main concern is opening the doors and no one coming in. >> reporter: the owners say the project has already taken a bite out of their business. this week's closure of van ness will move traffic even farther from their front door. the journal contractor is building a pedestrian tunnel under van ness avenue. >> where you see a dot the line across the street, that's the shape of the tunnel. >> reporter: it will connect to future cpnc hospital with a medical building. >> it's signed to move safely twine the two buildings.

>> reporter: friday, rush hour commuters will face a complete shut down of that block on van ness. residents have mixed feelings. >> it's really hard, but definitely positive and negative. >> i think they've done a really good job routeing the traffic. >> reporter: all day, friday, saturday, and sun, most of the traffic will be routed to the west of van ness, creating a web of detours from cell street up to broadway. muni buses will be allowed to pass through. but muni riders should be aware. notices are posted with alerts that some bus stops have been shifted to alternate sights. >> i think all around town, people are dealing with parking issues, with construction issues. it's just part of san francisco right now. kind of the growing pains of a growing city. >> reporter: the closures will be from 11:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m., tonight, tuesday night, and wednesday night. then starting friday, you just might want to avoid the area all together for those closures

that last through the weekend. >> unless your stopping at tommy's joint for something to eat. another closure coming later this month, beginning friday, april 24. there's a three day closure planned for labor day in september. at ktvu.com we've posted complete details about the closures. you'll find the information under web links. across the bay, another street closure planned in oakland is going to last a lot longer. two years. starting next month, crews shut down the embarcadero bridge on the embarcadero. city officials say the bridge is old and needs to be rebuilt. it helps traffic move back and forth, in the area around the 5th avenue marina. many drivers use it to avoid the congestion on interstate 880. the city says there is no way to build a temporary bridge while repairs are underway. legislation in sacramento would limit tax rebates for

electric vehicles to cars costing $40,000 or less. that would eliminate rebates from cars from tesla that routinely cost much more. it's authored by state senator ted gains of ruseville. he says he doesn't see the needs for subsidizing high end car purchases for wealthy owners. the sacramento bee reports gains personal car is a subaru with a $26,000 sticker price. wall street started off the week on a positive note. the dow gained 117 points. nasdaq was up 30. the s & p added 13. the increases were fueled by a big surge in crude oil prices. a former player not the san francisco 49ers and the oakland raiders is in trouble with the law again. he is facing charges after police say he hit several cars and assaulted an officer while under the influence of drugs. as ktvu's david stevenson

reports, this isn't the first time harris has been in trouble with the law. >> reporter: a bystander yesterday evening spotted quain harris slumped behind the wheel of his audi. police say they quickly connected the car to two earlier crimes. >> turns out, the car is the same car that was involved in two hit-and-run incidents. one at hod street and broadway in the central district, as well as on the 1700 block of harrison, where the vehicle collided with an rv. they attempted to put handcuffs on, in which attempt, the suspect did attempt to bite the officer in the hand. thankfully, the officer was not hurt. >> he played for the niners from 2003 to 2007 before briefly playing for the raiders in 2008. in early 2013, harris became one of a handful of nfl players to come out as gay after retiring.

the days may be numbered for the san jose family camp. budget problems could put an end to the city subsidy that keeps the camp running. camp supporters are not giving up without a fight. >> reporter: the kellers started bringing their family to the yosemite camp in 1978. now they bring their grandkids too. >> this is special. it's the total package. >> reporter: they worry that experience may be in jeopardy. >> it's scary. we think we're going to lose it. every year we think this could be the last. >> reporter: san jose leases

the land from the forest service, that lease will be up next year. the question, will the city pay to extend it? >> it's unique. it's a special program that the city of san jose has, that almost no other cities have. we can do this, we're recovering, and we're asking for another 20 year lease. >> last year, the city only agreed to a five year less and those agreements have been difficult. in 2010, the camp was closed to fix the dining hall. in 2014, the rim fire hit. 17 tents were lost, a deck and some sheds. rebuilding has been the easy part. it's getting campers to come back that's been the hard part. >> the city of san jose needs to hold onto this gem. >> automatic there are legitimate concerns about cost.

through into wednesday morning, the lake tahoe area is getting snow. scattered showers possible again wednesday at lunchtime. the models are not sure what to do with that. i would expect maybe a sprinkle or two as we start to clear out on wednesday. the real story is going to be this overnight thing. the showers are coming around 4:00, 5:00 a.m. 7:00a.m., scattered showers. lunchtime, some sun, maybe a sprinkle or two. a chance for another sprinkle. temperatures are down as well. the forecast for the five day, this is when it happens overnight. this is a good looking system. it's nice. i like this one for lotteries, because we need it. but also because it rolls in overnight, and it doesn't impact the morning commute. so often, we get these storms to come in hot and heavy, and they blow in just right in time for the morning commute. this is going to miss us. drop some water on the roadways, but should be following from the sky for the commute. >> the brunt is going to happen while we're sleeping, and we're still getting the rain. >> i expect it's going to rain

a double play. the next batter, and that was the only hit texas was to get. 8-0 the final. the line for gray, 8 innings, gave up only the one hit. 3 strike outs. a big win in the east bay. picking up where he left off in kansas city last fall, madison bumgarner continues his act. a man amongst boys. they're dancing, they're twisting. mad bum happy to have angel pagan in center field. looking pretty good with a pitch here to rob chris owings of a possible single. pagan with the glove. then with the bat. got himself a stroke into right- center field, nori aoki, another newcomer will come in to score. 2-0 giants. 5th inning will continue. brandon crawford, a laser to right. watch it get under the glove of mark trumbo out there.

pagan will wind up at 2nd. the diamondbacks did get to the giants bullpen for 3 in the 8th. casilla, a 1-2-3 save. but the giants, 5-4 winners on opening night. this was the evening to put your tv remote to extreme work. all the opening day baseball, and the national championship decided, yes, it lives up to the hype. sports part 2 next.

well, they ruined kentucky's perfect season. and led much of the game against mike krzyzewski and duke, but down the stretch, wisconsin wilts. moo team led by more than 9. frank kaminsky will drive, spin move, nice, and up one late. the three-point play there. kaminsky, 21 points, 9 rebounds. grayson allen had 16 off the bench. a 2 point lead with 4:50 left for duke. later, duke up 1, okafor, a great spin move of his own, will get fouled, and wind up getting the plus one in the lane. gets that thing to drop, and

3:14 left. 61-58 duke, but put it away here. yet another freshman, tyus jones. a three. he had 23 points tonight. he's the mvp. freshman again. 10-0 run. 1:23 left. that ended it. coach k's fifth national title. duke does prevail over wisconsin. you see the final. 68-63. meantime, the season is basically over for the sharks. two games left on the schedule, but absolutely no hope for the playoffs. joe thornton taking the pass, no one knows what to do with it. 3-1. the stars however own this night. jamie ben put it away. second of the night for him. 5-1 is your final. the first time since 2002-2003 the sharks will not go to the postseason. that's the sporting life.
