a verdict has been reached in the boston marathon bombing trial on the second day of deliberations. i'm tori campbell. the jury deliberated just 11 hours before finding dzhokhar tsarnaev guilty on all 30 counts against him. 17 of those counts carry a potential death penalty. here's a look at the federal court in boston this afternoon. the defense attorneys admitted dzhokhar tsarnaev was involved in the bombings that killed three people and injured more

than 260 at the boston marathon in april of 2013. but they said he was strongly influenced by his older brother who died during the manhunt. five men and seven women are on the federal jury and their job is not over. they will come back for more testimony before deciding whether to sentence the 21-year- old to death or life in prison. we're waiting for reaction to these verdicts and we'll bring it to you in our next newscast at 5:00. we are also following breaking news in sunnyvale. skyfox is over the scene of an officer-involved shooting on tasman drive in sunnyvale. these are live pictures right now of that scene. you can zee a couple of police cruisers -- see a couple of police cruisers in the parking lot. the department of public safety said officers were responding to a report of an armed robbery in the area of tasman and the lawrence expressway when an officer opened fire. this is just about 15 minutes ago. there's no word yet if anyone was injured in the shooting but

we'll keep on top of it and will update you on this breaking story as we get more information. again, officer-involved shooting in sunnyvale. he's been on the run for more than a month. now inmate johnle carter is back in custody. authorities found the accused child molester living nearly 2,000 miles away in mississippi. our reporter is live at the santa clara county sheriff's office. how was he finally caught? >> reporter: well, tori, the sheriff said it was a joint effort by this office as well as the u.s. marshals office that ultimately led to carter's capture. he's currently booked in jail in gulf port, mississippi and is awaiting extradition back here t was back on march 6th, the 4 3-year-old -- the 43-year- old had a medical appointment at valley medical center in san

jose. he escaped. his brother drove him to reno where the inmate boarded a greyhound bus to gulf, port, mississippi. carter has extended family in the area. surveillance video from the bus depot captured carter leaving the bus station, the fugitive task force thence arrested his brother and -- task force and then arrested his brother and they found him and when they tried to arrest him, he ran again but was eventually caught. >> we wanted him. we wanted to get him. he's an alleged child molester. facing a major amount of time in prison and when he escapes from us, we want to make sure that the public is safe. >> reporter: well, when carter ran again a u.s. marshal was injured with a broken oral and torn bicep. the mar small is expected to re- - the marshal is expected to recover. the sheriff said they are looking into policies and

proposes about changes -- proposes about changes to procedures. carter was initially arrested back in march of 2014 for five counts of child molestation for molesting a then 9-year-old girl. he will now face more charges in light of the escape, including escaping and injuring an officer. tori? >> yes, sounds like good police work there to bring him into custody so quickly. thank you. a man who was about to be released from prison now faces new murder charges because of a new dna test being used in contra costa county. district attorney mark peterson says an earlier dna says linked the man known as william wild bill huff to deanna butterfield. her strangled boydy was found in tilden park in oakland in 1987. but because she was a prostitute, it only proved they had sexual relations. the new dna test linked him to another rape and strangulation that happened six years later

in san pablo. the d.a. said that was the big break in the case. >> but now with two females six years apart, both being sexually assaulted and asphyxiated, we believe that's tough proof to prove he committed the crime. >> investigators are asking anyone who has information about huff or other similar cold cases to call their local police department. at this hour, oakland police are looking for two men who stole a woman's purse and dragged her with her car in front of her home t was all caught on -- home. it was all caught on camera. brian flores is live at police headquarters with an update. >> reporter: i can say this remains an active investigation. the robbers responsible for this remain at large. but there is a good lead because of that surveillance camera footage. let's take a look at the footage. that was taken on saturday night around 7:00 in the upper diamond neighborhood.

an 82-year-old woman at first just putting something in the back of an suv there when all of a sudden, a man and a woman, one wearing a baseball hat, came up from behind and stole her purse. the suspect jumps into the car. she went after them. but they drove back because the street came to an end. this was all on surveillance video. >> because we live on a dead end, the people who assaulted her came flying down the road, almost, you know, almost hitting them. it's a fortunate thing she didn't get run over as she fell away from the car. >> reporter: now, this morning, the victim showed us the bruises she got on her arm as a result of the robbery. she didn't want to be identified but the victim says

they will install a security system at the home now for her mother's safety. as for the neighbor, he told us that he installed the system after another home invasion robbery in the neighborhood. for this afternoon, police will be recanvassing the neighborhood to speak to witnesses or find any other resident who has footage. a deadly shooting on a busy city street was not a random act. officers responded around 10:00 last night to bascom road near whitehorn drive. they found a 33-year-old woman from sacramento with at least one gunshot wound. she was pronounced dead at the scene. her name has not been released. it appears the woman was in a car when she was shot and they believe she knew the gunman. the car has been recovered but the shooter remains on the loose. the mayor of san jose is leading the push for a memorial for police officers and

firefighters killed in the line of duty. after the funeral for michael johnson, mayor liccardo and a mayor of the city council are resurrecting a proposal from 2008. the idea was shelfed because of the recession. the memorial would cost about $180,000. mayor liccardo says half of the cost could be covered by the city. public and private donations would cover the rest. the proposed plan still has to be approved by the city council. a northern california woman battling cancer is calling for changes at alaska airlines after an employee kicked her off a flight from hawaii to the bay area. as alex savidge explains, the woman says she was told she needed a doctor's note to fly. >> my family is being forcibly removed from the airplane. >> reporter: a disturbing ordeal for elizabeth sedway who posted this video to facebook after she and her family were pulled off an alaska airlines flight monday. the placer county woman said it was all because of her illness.

the wife and mother suffers from multiple myeloma, a rare form of plasma cancer. she's undergoing chemotherapy. before boarding, sedway said she put on a surgical mask and mentioned to an airline employee that she was feeling weak and may need extra time getting on the plane. sedway and her family took their seats but that's when an airline employee asked them to leave the flight. >> they are taking me off the airplane because i don't have a doctor's note saying i can fly. all of these people are waiting. i'm being removed as if i'm a criminal or contagious. >> reporter: the airline was apparently worried about sedway suffering a medical emergency during the long flight across the pacific from hawaii to san jose n sedway said she was told she needed to be cleared by a doctor in order to fly. on the video, you can hear her tearfully apologizing to other passengers as she walked off

the plane. >> i'm sorry. >> god bless you. >> thank you. >> reporter: an a -- and alas airlines is apologizing. they said we're very sorry for how the situation was handled. while our employee had the customer's well being in find, the situation could have been handled differently. the airline has reimbursed the family for their airfare and hotel stay in hawaii. sedway said she plans to donate that money to cancer research. she's hoping the airline and its employees will handle similar situations in a more sensitive way in the future. i'm alex savidge, fox 2 news. state lawmakers will take up a controversial vaccination bill later this afternoon. the bill being heard in the senate health committee would repeal the state's personal belief exemption. california is one of 20 states that allows parents the option

to not have their children get vaccinated for personal reasons. mandatory vaccine bills failed in both oregon and washington state last month. but some believe the measure could pass in california because of the widespread measles outbreak that started in disneyland. today governor brown is meeting with water, environmental and agricultural leaders to discuss the drought. the meeting is expected to focus on different ways to conservemore water. last week the governor announced mandatory 20% water reductions. he said the state must become more resilient, more efficient and more innovative dealing with our drought. san francisco is looking for the ugliest yard in the city. the winner would not be filled with weeds necessarily but it will be a yard that needs a lot of water to stay green. the grand prize winner will get a yard makeover featuring

that will be a runoff election this june to fill a vacant seat. but who will be in the runoff is still in the air. with 86% of the vote county, tom oroscoe is in first place with% of the votes. man nguyen and len deep each have about 19%. in fact, only seven votes separate the candidates for second place. the winner in june finishes for canson chu. rahm emanual has won his second term as mayor after a

hard-fought runoff election. he defeated jesus garcia. it was the first mayoral runoff election in chicago history. emanual said she's humbled by the history. >> around the world there's no other city that an immigrant from mexico and the grandson of an immigrant can both run for the high office of this city. that's why we're the greatest city. >> the former white house chief of staff still has challenges ahead, including a new teacher contract, a push lick pension crisis and -- public pension crisis. there's been a big shift in thank you, missouri. voters went to the polls yesterday for the first time since a white police officer shot and killed michael brown. ferguson will have three african-american city council members compared to just one before the election. the city council will now have to approve hiring a new police

chief, a new municipal judge and a new city manager. those officials were resigned or fired. a white police officer in south carolina is now facing murder charges after fatally shooting a black man in the back as he ran from the officer. as fox news correspondent doug luzader reports, much of the incident was caught on video. >> reporter: unlike recent incidents of deadly force involving police officers, this was caught on camera. we'll show you in -- this in a moment. prosecutors say it's evident this police officer went over the line. the video shows a fleeing suspect and then shots. [ sound of gunfire ] >> reporter: 50-year-old walter scott goes down after being hit a number of times in the back. this evidence led prosecutors to swiftly charge officer michael thomas slager who appeared in court yesterday. >> as a result of that video,

and the bad decision made by our officer, he will be charged with murder. >> reporter: scott had been pulled over for a broken brake light. slager's initial attorney claimed that scott grabbed the officer's stun gun. an object is seen at the begy ginning -- beginning of the video. >> if there wasn't a video would we know the truth or would we just have gone with what was reported? >> reporter: scott's family grateful the video emerged. up like other officers ins -- other officers involving white police officers and black subjects, in this case, it may make all of the difference. >> justice has been served. i don't think that all police officers are bad cops.

satellite. we're trying to show you 0 not much in the way of rainfall. the severe weather we had from yesterday but the active weather from yesterday, kind of moving out of town and temperatures in the upper 50s to right around 60. showing you the current numbers out there, san jose right now, checking in 60. san francisco 57. and santa rosa, 57 degrees. name, 56. forecast headlines for today, we'll have a sun/cloud mix. it will be chilly overnight. get ready for some pretty chilly numbers. coolest locations back down in the 30s to around 40 degrees. and a dry weather pattern over the next few days. warming run as well. temperatures back up. warmest loafcations inland approaching the lower 70s as we head into the weekend forecast for saturday and sunday. here we go with the as forecast for this evening. partly cloudy skies. temperatures will be in the upper 50s. 58 degrees and a bit of a breeze out there. wind out of the northwest, 20 miles an hour. this area of low pressure, kind of produced all of the active weather yesterday. it's going to move out to the north and east.

that slight chance of a pop your shower, i am thinking we'll see more of those popcorn looking clouds. the big white puffy clouds. this weekend, warming. temperatures back up in the 60s and 70s. fair skies. here we go with our forecast model into thursday. just for the most part, clear skies. see a few high clouds trying to approach the region. and then on friday, basically the same deal with no major changes. this is showing you the same thing with clear skies right on into thursday out there with not much in the way of -- no rainfall out there. the storm track remains way up to the north over the next couple of days. the clouds paying us a visit into the thursday forecast. temperatures for this afternoon, mainly upper 50s to lower 60s for afternoon highs. san jose, 63, santa cruz, 62. and a look ahead to the five- day forecast, you will see temperatures warming up steadily into thursday and friday. a few extra clouds on saturday but not a big deal.

stocks dropped an hour ago after news officials disagreed about when they might raise interest rates. they are awaiting first quarter earning results. dow is up 3. the nasdaq is up 29. s&p up 3. san francisco-based twitter is denying reports there are two companies interested in buying it. despite the comment there is

new report they've hired goldman sachs to hold over any takeover attempts. google we've been hearing that they are an interested party. we have an update on breaking news in sunnyvale where there's been an officer- involved shooting following an apparent armed robbery. we just talked to the crew on the scene on tasman drive. a witness says a man with a knives with refusing officer's orders to drop it. the officers then opened fire on the suspect who was taken to the hospital. we don't know his condition. we'll keep on top of this story and have updates online and on the next newscast coming up at 5:00. thank you for watching ktvu fox 2 news. our next report is at 5:00. have a good day.
