[ indiscernible ] >> reporter: according to the officer he didn't stand still for long. >> reporter: he witnessed the whole thing. >> he was standing, holding a knife, we heard the officer screaming at him, put the knife down. he wouldn't listen. he went towards him with the knife. >> shots fired. suspect is down. >> the suspect a white male in his mid-20s was transported to the hospital where he was

for a broke -- walter scott over for a broken tail light. learning more about an escapee who was recaptured after being on the run for a month. the sheriff's office says he had been using his brother's identity and was staying with family in mississippi. an effort between the sheriff's office and the u.s. marshal's office led to his capture. when he escaped his brother drove from san jose to reno. surveillance video in reno were he used his brother name and boarded a bus to mississippi. they found him in gulf port where he tried to escape again. >> we wanted him. we wanted to get him. she a child molester. facing time in prison. and when he escapes from us we want to make sure it public is

safe. >> he over powered a sheriff's deputy and escaped during a medical appointment. that was on march 6. when asked about whether security changes have been made she said the office is reviewing the policies. jury in massachusetts today found that dzhokhar tsarnaev guilty of all 30 counts against him in connection with the boston marathon bombings. a crowd gathered in boston awaiting the verdict. during the trial prosecutors painted dzhokhar tsarnaev as a cold blooded killer taking revenge on america. his lawyers said it was his brother who was the driving force behind the attack. victims and families packed the courtroom to hear the verdict. >> i am grateful to have him off the street. i am grateful to show everyone,

the world, it is not tolerated. this is not how we behave. >> among those who testified was a man whose son was injured in the bombing while he was waiting for his mother to finish the race. the jury will now hear testimony in the death penalty phase of the trial. the fbi is asking for the public's help to identify a man wanted in connection with three bank robberies. he is 6'2", 40s with an athletic build and tattoos on both arms. a picture is right there. he robbed a u.s. bank on mission street on march 30. a city bank on california street on april 2 and a bank of america on april 7. investigators say he is considered armed and dangerous because he brandished a knife during the robberies. anyone with information is asked to call police. new at 6:00 p.m.

a vote tonight at the state capitol on a bill that would make vaccinations mandatory. now it is closer to becoming law. after an emotional hearing a senate committee voted to require almost all california school children be vaccinated. if it becomes law california would join mississippi and alabama. ktvu's john fowler reports there are strong opinions on both sides. >> charged topic. >> i feel like, you know, it is a scary thing. it is scary. >> as a mom you want to respect the decisions all parents make for their children knowing they are making them within reason. >> reporter: parents can object on personal or religious

grounds. >> so easy for parents to opt out. we need to make it more difficult. >> reporter: a bill would eliminate the exemptions. opponents rallied at the state capitol. >> we ought to encourage full vaccination. >> reporter: doctors say science proves there is no autism link, they save lives and prevent permanent injuries. >> i don't think we have a right not ovaccinate unless there is a medical reason -- to vaccinate unless there is a medical reason. . >> reporter: most say they would rather not send their child it a school where the kids are not vaccinated. >> i believe it is up to parents. it is their choice. but my concern is all kids are safe. >> harm to your children, it becomes more scary.

that means deal making will not be easy at all, especially when it is over water. tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. scientists across california are calling for improvements to the aging water infrastructure system. they say in the event of a major earthquake the system could collapse leaving californians without water. officials say damage estimates from this would sore to $40 billion in lost water supplies. they are calling on governor jerry brown to make it more earthquake safe. >> in a drought we need something that will secure our water supply, capture water during good years so during bad years we have something to go back to and rely on. >> scientists have been warning about the vulnerabilities of the levy system that delivers waters to 2/3 of californians.

>> reporter: an after years of steering them in the right direction his work is now being recognized. she with the -- he is with the super bowl host committee. they tapped him as the newest recipient of the playmaker grant. but he wasn't always the good guy. to help tell that story, 1986, here in china town, 16 years old. he kidnapped a man out of his home, took him down here to his business and robbed it of $35,000. the end result, 35 years in prison. he says they will use the money to launch pilot project taking residents educating them about their history, the goal to break down racial barriers.
