san jose, shaping up to be a gorgeous morning for you. welcome to mornings on 2, it's saturday april 11. i'm claudine wong. >> and good morning, everyone. i'm mike me back. let's check in with rosemary for the weather. >> it feels like a lot of spring out there. sunrise was 20 minutes ago and it will set in 13 hours or so. 13 hours of daylight for you and a glimpse of what's happening outside our doors. >> we have these high clouds over the area. these are coming from a system that will bring us the high clouds and nothing more. temperatures this morning on the cool side. we have 42 for you, 50 in concord, 48 in walnut creek, along the peninsula, san francisco starting at 51 and a cool 41 in areas like half moon bay. as we get through the day, notice we have the clouds sweeping through, that's about it. i'll stop it here in the noon hour. a mix of sunshine and clouds, these clouds are the type that

bring us the translucent sun. these are the afternoon. we have got 60s and 70s out there. today a minor warmup what we had yesterday. you're going to see the a's this afternoon. temperatures into the upper 60s, for the second half of the afternoon, we could have the winds pick up a little bit. also associated with the system that would bring us the high clouds throughout the day. 67 san francisco, mid-70s in napa, livermore you're expected to hit 75 this afternoon. 74 for morgan hill. temperatures will begin to climb as we get into the second half of the weekend and i'll have a look at that for you coming up in a little bit. thank you. new this morning, the search is on for three armed robbery suspects. police say over the last couple of days they committed a series of violent crimes and last night they led officers on a chase that left one pedestrians

dead. they are accused of serious violent armed robberies last week. police say around 10pm, seconds after the last robbery, an officer spotted their vehicle, a stolen toyota corolla, and during that pursuit the suspect hit and killed a woman at the intersection of california and kearney street. the suspect hit another pedestrian and that victim is expected to be okay. they found that car abandoned on treasure island and they've recovered two guns. they are asking for people to find the robbers and who are considered armed and dangerous. >> a major street in san francisco. >> they're digging up van ness avenue as part of a construction for a detour tunnel. traffic delays are expected to all weekend. take a look at the map here.

it shows the road closure on van ness avenue between there and post street. this is the first of several road closures in the weeks ahead. ali is live right there about the progress. >> reporter: that construction project as you mentioned an underground pedestrians tunnel will connect a hospital on van ness with a medical office building across the street. this shut down 30 hours ago and crews have been hard at work ever since, what they're working on, we'll show you right in front of us. we'll have a great view of it. they're building the framework, it will be for that pedestrian tunnel, they'll excavate it sometime this month. as the mini bus goes by, it's a shut-down for all vehicles, except mini buses and first responders, that's one of the

guides they're using, they drill the holes and put the pipe down. that's what they'll use, those beams for the tunnel. how big a project and undertaking is this? it's is not something that happens every day. >> this is a one-of-a-kind tunnel underneath van ness that has infer been done before. >> you got how many crews, how much equipment? do you have to shut it down for the weekend it's a big undertaking. >> we have three-day weekend shutdown for van ness, we have police officers, 20 flaggers to help direct traffic all weekend long. >> this was shut down yesterday during friday rush hour, how did it go? >> it was busy but i think everybody we had out here really helped have traffic move smoothly throughout rush hour. >> we have interesting and

medication to show exactly what they're going to be doing this weekend. talk about the project, what the work that's taking place this weekend is. >> effectively we're building the temporary walls to the tunnel structure itself. next weekend, two weeks from now we'll build the roof structure than will be the end of the work until labor day weekend. the tunnel will be complete. it's not like the central subway that you have a giant tunnel you're boring through. >> that's correct. >> you're going to build this tunnel first and then dig out all of the stuff. >> all summer long there will be work going on underneath van ness, most of the vehicles on van ness will have any idea that there is construction going on underneath them. the next time this will all be closed as part of van ness will be two weeks from now. but, for the rest of the weekend only mini buses and

golden gate transit buses and first responders will be aloud go through this portion of van ness between feary and post street. everything is shatted to reopen on time just before midnight, 11:59 on sunday evening, mike, so by monday morning for the rush hour commute, things should be normal. >> let's hope it goes smooth the rest of the way. to find out more about the closure, you can go to our website and click on web links. they'll have extra patrols on campus today after they allegedly threatened to go to campus and start shooting. this was on the social media pages. we got a characters there were a flood of calls since it came out. they got a timely warning when

someone heard them lever to a gun and campus shooting on saturday. they're asking anyone who is planning to be on campus today to stay aware of their surroundings. doctors who treat students on uc campus, they're standing outside. the doctors say they're unhappy with the progress of contract negotiations and budget cuts have led to inadequate staffing and that has hurt students. they set to begin their strike and the strike will end on monday. field college is days away from clot willing and the only way it can stay open is if a new buyer chooses to invest. they rallied in front of the state attorney general's office. if the school closes, 9,000 students and 1500 employees will be affected. the attorney general's office has been deterring potential fires. >> there appears to be some unreasonable demands being put on the new buyer, such as

presumably liability for past actions of ownership, and it's not acceptable for buyers. >> the for profit institution is facing a lawsuit by the attorney general for violations including defrauding students. new this morning with president obama out of the country, vice president joe biden delivered the weekly address, he talked about one of the reasons he and his wife is an educator out of virginia, community college traveled to the bay area this week. >> that's why the president and i have a plan to remove that barrier and expand the pathways of the middle class bringing the cost of community college down, down to 0. >> free tuition at community colleges would cut the cost of a degree by half and it will be paid for by wealthy investors and special fees on big banks.

he's going to depart san francisco today and back to his home in delaware, he met a group of military vets, and they are enrolled in pg and e power path initiative. they'll teach a variety of job skills for prospective workers and vets. >> the same reason i had the opportunity to help others and i have the opportunity again. >> being in the military is giving me the basic scaffolding that i can persevere. >> and he says the u.s. needs to modern eyes its infrastructure, that the company needs well trained highly skilled workers like these vets returning home to make that happen. >> it's not just can he or she do that job right now, what is the potential, and you have all been leaders of women and men

in tough situations. >> the vice president took time out to have a bite to eat at a grilled cheese place at the financial district. he took 30 minutes to have the ceo of the melt. he ordered a classic grilled cheese sandwich and two tomato soups and chocolate shake. builders will have to create drought resistant front yards in american canyon. people who have lawns can keep them. some residents are not happy, with water at a premium, they should think its redevelopment plans for a new town center. >> how about every unit you're adding, how is it helping our drought issue, you're adding who are. >> they would add a park, hotel, school, and townhouses and apartments. the water situation in american canyon is worse and it depends

. you could start your mornings live, it's partly to mostly cloudy skies, it's getting to 70 degrees this afternoon. >> the governor of illinois has signed a disaster declaration that will allow the state to receive federal support after tornadoes hit several counties, storms hit right through the area thursday night. yesterday they gathered to collect food water and clotheing to help those that lost everything. several people were injured during those storms and two will in their late 6s were killed. >> the damage is significant. houses that are affected, they're severely affected, they're gone for the most part or uninhabitable, it's devastation from where the tornado went through. >> the extent of the damage has yet to be determined right now. rescue crews say the primary goal is to search through the debris to make sure everything is delivered for. hundreds of packages

the national cherry blossom festival is under way in washington, d.c. and the blossoms are expected to hit peak bloom and more are expected to come out for the parade. according to the national park service, when the trees peak, they'll last for four days. the cherry blossom festival started on march 20th and will come to a close tomorrow night. more than 100,000 are expected to come to the northern california cherry blossom festival. it will start at 10 and continue into the evening and end at 7. it will feature food shopping, performances and festivities will continue tomorrow and peculiar up again next weekend. everyone is invited to join in on the celebration and most of

. here's a look at some of the top stories we're following for you this morning. police are looking for three men who they say led them on a high-speed chase through downtown san francisco while trying to escape the two pedestrians killing one of them. they found the suspect's car abandoned on treasure island. they believe the three men are responsible for a rash of armed robberies this week and including at least three yesterday. cal state east bay police say they'll have extra patrols on campus after someone allegedly threatened to go to campus today. and start shooting. it went out on the website and social media pages. they're calling the notice a timely warning. they overheard them referred to a gun and campus shooting on saturday. they're working nonstop this

weekend as part of the project to build an underground pedestrian tunnel for a new california hospital. van ness is closed until late tomorrow. this is the first phase of the project. there will be two more road closures. it's expected to be closed all weekend long. and ali is out at the site. how's it going. >> reporter: it's going well mike. we're waiting for the mini bus to go past. van ness, is closed to traffic except muni and golden gate traffic and first responders, there's a lot of construction equipment right now. i don't know if you can see it, they have giant drills out here that are building the framework

the robbers who may still be armed and considered dangerous. a big time street in san francisco is closed at this hour and will stay closed throughout the week, construction crews are digging up a section of van ness avenue as part of the construction of the underground tunnel, they're digging up that tunnel and working on this all week long. here's a map of where the construction site is taking place. it's closed on there between post and geary street. this is the first of several rounds respective closures in the weeks ahead. ktvu's ali is out there, hey, ali? >> this is the first of three weekend long closures that will happen over the next several months. what are they working on. the crews have been working on

32 hours around the clock building an underground pedestrian tunnel that will connect the medical hospital that will go into had in that big hole behind us on van ness with the medical office building across the street. you can see they're using heavy duty equipment to do that. there's the drill right there in front of us that they've been using. they have two of them in operation, they have two others on stand by just in case anything goes wrong. those drills are three feet wide in diameter, and behind that you can see them lifting up the giant pipes, those pipes are going to be used to install the support beams that will become that underground tunnel. this is the first full weekend closure to do it. the project director, the contractor for this project, give us how big this is this weekend. how much work is going on how

to the second half of the weekend. i will have a look at the extended forecast in just a little bit. >> new, three armed robbery suspects are on the loose in san francisco after they hit and killed a pedestrian while escaping from police. the suspects are accused of a series of robberies this week including at least three last night. an officer spotted their vehicle, stolen toyota cololla around 10:00 p.m. the suspect struck and killed a woman during the pursuit. they hit another pedestrian who suffered nonlife threatening injuries. they later crashed into a car but got away. police eventually found the stolen corolla abandoned on treasure island. police say they recovered two guns where the chase first started. >> your time 9:04. happening now a major street in san francisco is closed at this hour and it's going to stay closed throughout the weekend. construction crews digging up a section as part of the construction of an underground

pedestrian tunnel. there are detour signs and police officers directing vehicles around that road work but traffic delays are expected all weekend. i want to give you a look at the map. it house the road closure and it's between gary and post street. because it's a long construction project this is the first of several road closures in the week ahead. >> that's right. project planners also urging planners to be patient. this road closure is just the first part in the project that will take months to complete. oaf night worker -- overnight workers drilled hole to put support beams for the 124-foot long tunnel. despite detour signs and officers directing traffic congestion in the area has been unbearable but project developers say the road work is important to building an underground pedestrian tunnel for the new california pacific medical center campus. >> two weeks from now we will install a temporary roof structure and then for the next

four months the crews will work underneath the street building the structure. >> while buss allowed to go through the road closures some say they are confused because the regular stop is now changed. one sidewalk is also closed for pedestrians. here is a look at the overall construction project. the closure will last through late sunday night into early monday. this weekend crews are installing support beams. on the second road closure which is the weekend of the 24th of april there is work involving utilities and paneling, a final road closure is set for early september in which the street surface will be restored. to find out more just go to the website. >> more than 200,000 are expected to check out the northern california cherry blossom festival. it's a family friendly event. it kicks off today at ten and will continue until 7:00 p.m.

aware of their surroundings. college is just day away from closing the only way it is stay open is if a new buy erin vests. hundreds of student and staff rallied in front of the state attorney. if the school closes more than 9,000 students and 1500 employees will be affected. protesters say the attorney general has been deterring potential buyers. >> there appears to be some unreasonable demands being put on a new buyer such as presuming live for past actions for previous ownership and it's not acceptable. >> the college was bought in 2010 by another college. the for profit institution is facing a lawsuit by the attorney general for violations including defrauding students. >> the weather is heating up and so is the debate over higher fees at dozens of beaches along the coast. next week the coastal commission will consider a proposal to raise the day use

kirk hammett is the lead songwriter for metallica. he grew up in san francisco. creature features which aired here on ktvu. it was aa round this time he developed his appreciation of horror movies. now he has one of the most extensive collections of items that he has been gathering for the past 30 years. >> i always felt like i never quite fit in with a lot of things. so when i watched monster movies i -- i -- it was really easy to be able to related to the monsters and really just kind of feel like one of them. >> he started collecting horror movie items when he was just six starting comic books and then monster movie posters. in 2012 he release aid book

called to much horror business because he thought it was the right time to share his collection with the public. this weekend some of his items will be on display at his second fear fest evil being held at the rock part theater in san jose. the two day event will feature an outdoor carnival, costume contest and performances. joining us this morning live from theater in san jose where they are all set up for the event is himself the man, kirk hammett. five, six, growing up in the bay area, i mean you were trading milk money in order to get horror magazines? >> pretty much. there was this magazine that i used to buy. it was called famous monsters of film land. my mom would give me a quarter a day for -- just whatever, milk or whatever. i wouldn't by the milk. i would pocket the quarter and after four days i would have a dollar which was enough for me to go run down to the local

comic bookstore on 23rd and mission in san francisco and buy a monster magazine. you know that was my routine for eloping time until my -- for a long time until my mom found out i wasn't driving my milk -- driving my -- drinking my milk. then she gave me more cash so i could have my milk. >> what did you see when you saw that first horror film that kind of clicked for you? >> you know it's really difficult for me to pinpoint it. it's -- like a whole range of feelings and thoughts and emotions. i think what -- what was -- obvious to me at that time at five, my first horror movie was this was not walt disney. this was not mickey mouse or bugs bunny or captain kangarrr. this is something totally uniquely different and i had so

much fun experiencing that kind of story that i just -- i needed to have more. i became interested in my -- just quest for searching out horror movies and the more i watched the more i realized i loved them. i started reading monster magazines and horror comic books and never really went away. >> your collection is huge. do you have a -- one particular item that down there that folks can come and see and check out that you have a lot of passion for? >> well you know i have -- quite a few pieces that are really great. today we brought down this huge prop. it's about 11 for 12 feet long. it's -- it's a creature -- it's a preproduction of a monster from a movie from 1957 called it conqueored the world. what i love is that -- it's a really cheesy movie with a

really great monster. looks like a giant cucumber. this monster defeated the world in that movie. we have a reproduction of it and it's pretty cool. >> solid. about the band. are you still working on a new album right now and when do you think fans --. >> we -- we still -- still still still are working on a new album. we have been workingn 't it for a while. we have songs. we have tunes. we are working on it. we are moving pretty slowly because life in metallica has so many factors and we also have our own families and so -- that's kind of contributing to how slow the pace is but we are moving forward and we are gaining ground, every day, every week, every month and -- sooner or later we will have --

an album out. yeah. >> i can't tell you when -- i wish i could tell you when, i don't really know . none of us do. we are still working on it it's all good. moving forward are two big words. last question. have you been invited no will you play at the super bowl? >> you know it would be an extreme honor. i mean beyond records for us to play the super bowl. i feel and think we are the perfect band for the super bowl and i feel and think we are the perfect band for any sort of event like that. you know -- it's all part of just -- convincing other people in the nfl and the powers that be. if we got the invite i think we would have to like think about it for maybe onesavanh hundred doctor one hundredth of a second. immaterial amon board with you. i hope it happens and it would be great to do it right here in the backyard where you grew up in. i'm looking forward to the
