-- or ruptured a high-pressure pg&e gas transmission pipeline running through the county sheriffs firing ranges. that set off an explosion and a fire ball that reached 100 feet high, injuring at least 14, one with serious burns. this is what a spokesperson told us about an hour ago. >> last report, it was going to take approximately two hours for them to shut it down. now we are waiting for pg&e to shut down the line. >> gas has been shut off. >> reporter: i called pg&e and nothing was offered of substance until about 20 minutes ago. >> gas has been shut off as of 3:56 p.m. >> reporter: why did it take from 2:30 to 3:56 p.m., hour and a half to turn off the gas? >> we're currently investigating all aspects of

this incident. >> reporter: the long delay in shutting down the gas was a critical factor in the mass destruction of san bruno and suggests that shutoff valves are inadequate, even for this much smaller line, just 12 inches, line 118-b. now, with the fire out, officials at fresno fire are monitoring the atmosphere and other conditions there to make sure that nothing spreads in terms of grass fires and that all of the air is clear and safe. that's the latest that we know right now. >> tom, can you put that number in perspective for us, how long it took hem to shut it off? what would be a good number? >> reporter: well, i mean, if you have shutoff valves that are close by, that could be within seconds or certainly within minutes. the problem is sometimes these valves are miles apart. so imagine having a 12-inch line, let alone a 30-inch line that's got hundreds of pounds pressure per square inch over miles. once that line is ruptured, what happens? that gas has to vent to the lower pressure atmosphere. it will keep coming out and out

and out until it just vented out. same thing that happened in san bruno. that's why it took more than 90 minutes for this to happen. what's of particular concern about this, most people don't know, some sort of a dig-in, not this big and not this billing of consequences, but some kind of a dig-in like this happens in the pg&e system alone five times every day. >> five times every day. >> reporter: that's indeed the case. >> a startling number. tom vacar, thank you. stay with ktvu and ktvu.com for continuing coverage on this breaking news. we're also posting updates on twitter, facebook, and on our new mobile app. now to a multimillion dollar drug operation uncovered in the bay area. authorities say they found nearly 5000 marijuana plants inside a building in benicia. as ktvu's john sasaki tells us, today's bust comes just three months after authorities found another illegal growing operation in that same area. >> reporter: a nondescript

came just three months after a similar raid of this warehouse on east second street, half a mile away. >> very similar to the same type of operation, just on a smaller scale. so clearly it was related to it. >> reporter: investigators say that previous bust came after a benicia police officer responding to some other issue noticed something suspicious. it netted more than 800 plants and $2.5 million in processed pot. >> i don't think it's an isolated incident to the city of benicia in the industrial area of benicia. i think it's statewide, if not nationally, that these grows being grown outside are now growing inside. >> reporter: the bust helped lead investigators here, where one man was arrested. officials say they are looking for more people who were involved. in benicia, john sasaki, ktvu fox 2news. monday marks 4/20, the annual international marijuana celebration that draws thousands of pot smokers to golden gate park in san
