the united states. ktvu's rob roth where the shooting happened and the police say he was coming at them with a knife. >> reporter: right.francisco police chief has been maintaining the officers shot the man in self- defense but attorneys for the family are calling that a lie. >> reporter: attorneys filed a lawsuit in federal court today and requested a federal criminal investigation into the shooting. >> our hope is that they will charge these officers. >> the shooting happened in february not far from where he lived. there are two bullet holes in the house across the street. during a meeting last month police chief gave this account of what happened after two officers arrived responding to a 911 call of a man with a knife chasing another man. >> the officers were 5-6 feet

away when the suspect charged at the officers with the knife. both officers discharged their firearm. >> it is in the back. >> the family had a private autopsy formed. the conclues was he was shot six times from be-- concludes he was shot six times from behind. >> the chief will have to recant the false lie that he has been perpatchuating about how the shooting occurred. >> the police department said it would have no comment. the city attorney says the allegations are not consistent with the witness accounts and called the shooting justifiable. during today's press conference the parents made an appearance on skype from guatemala.

and was unharmed. the man hasn't been caught and that is creating extra concern for parents. >> i always make sure i drop my son off and walk him inside. you don't know with people how crazy they are with taking kids. it is sad. our kids should feel safe to come to school. >> the boy said it was a clean shaven asian man driving a 2 door toyota truck. >> a busy road in the city is shut down right now and it will be closed through the weekend. van ness is shut down because of a construction project and it is not scheduled to reopen till sunday at midnight. ktvu's christien kafton is in the city tonight. how bad is traffic because of this? >> reporter: frank, as you were talking we saw somebody tried to go down the closed street here. take a look. this is the area right here.

you see workers down there. that is where they are digging the tunnel here. one block of van ness is shut down. it is effecting traffic in a 10 block radius. and traffic in the area is slowing down. >> reporter: for the second time in two week construction workers torn up the street. tonight's closure will have the biggest impact on drivers. >> friday evening we expect the bulk of the traffic, friday rush hour traffic. >> reporter: lane closures restrict traffic along van ness. it is shut down to allow crews to work on the tunnel that will run from the new hospital and the medical offices that will open in 2019. >> it is always hard getting around the city but it is nice to have a new hospital coming in. >> reporter: drivers along the corridor have to put up with detours. >> heading southbound the main

a veteran police officer in san jose who is accused of running a marijuana operation was arraigned today. 44-year-old son vu was arrested last june. prosecutors say 12 pounds of marijuana was found in his storage unit. investigators found grow equipment and $5,700 in cash. he has been a san jose police officer for 21 years and authorities say he will remain on paid administrative leave till his case is over. right now he is still in jail on $100,000 bail. a few more details about the unexplained death of a man in the custody of baltimore police. protesters back in the streets today depanding answers and justice for freddie gray -- demanding answers and justice
