the united states. ktvu's rob roth where the shooting happened and the police say he was coming at them with a knife. >> reporter: right.francisco police chief has been maintaining the officers shot the man in self- defense but attorneys for the family are calling that a lie. >> reporter: attorneys filed a lawsuit in federal court today and requested a federal criminal investigation into the shooting. >> our hope is that they will charge these officers. >> the shooting happened in february not far from where he lived. there are two bullet holes in the house across the street. during a meeting last month police chief gave this account of what happened after two officers arrived responding to a 911 call of a man with a knife chasing another man. >> the officers were 5-6 feet

away when the suspect charged at the officers with the knife. both officers discharged their firearm. >> it is in the back. >> the family had a private autopsy formed. the conclues was he was shot six times from be-- concludes he was shot six times from behind. >> the chief will have to recant the false lie that he has been perpatchuating about how the shooting occurred. >> the police department said it would have no comment. the city attorney says the allegations are not consistent with the witness accounts and called the shooting justifiable. during today's press conference the parents made an appearance on skype from guatemala.

and was unharmed. the man hasn't been caught and that is creating extra concern for parents. >> i always make sure i drop my son off and walk him inside. you don't know with people how crazy they are with taking kids. it is sad. our kids should feel safe to come to school. >> the boy said it was a clean shaven asian man driving a 2 door toyota truck. >> a busy road in the city is shut down right now and it will be closed through the weekend. van ness is shut down because of a construction project and it is not scheduled to reopen till sunday at midnight. ktvu's christien kafton is in the city tonight. how bad is traffic because of this? >> reporter: frank, as you were talking we saw somebody tried to go down the closed street here. take a look. this is the area right here.

you see workers down there. that is where they are digging the tunnel here. one block of van ness is shut down. it is effecting traffic in a 10 block radius. and traffic in the area is slowing down. >> reporter: for the second time in two week construction workers torn up the street. tonight's closure will have the biggest impact on drivers. >> friday evening we expect the bulk of the traffic, friday rush hour traffic. >> reporter: lane closures restrict traffic along van ness. it is shut down to allow crews to work on the tunnel that will run from the new hospital and the medical offices that will open in 2019. >> it is always hard getting around the city but it is nice to have a new hospital coming in. >> reporter: drivers along the corridor have to put up with detours. >> heading southbound the main

door. search teams spread out across the city looking for him, he was on campus the whole time, even under the bleachers. he ate fruit from trees on campus. he is okay and they will spend the next couple weeks trying to figure out why he did. new at 5:00 p.m. a program helping veterans heal by connecting them with service dogs. tomorrow the program celebrates two years of helping injured veterans. ktvu's azenith smith shows us how the program works and the difference it is making. >> touch. touch. yeah. >> reporter: this lab is on a mission to become a service dog for a wounded warrior. his trainer is a u.s. navy veteran from san francisco who serve ad in the vietnam war. >> in the time i have been knowing luke, he showed me more control than i showed myself. >> reporter: he calls him his battle buddy. training him is part of his

the statue of liberty and liberty island was evacuated after some called and threatened to blow it up. a search turned up no evidence but hundreds of tourists were evacuated. at the same time as the threat came in police dogs picked up a a suspicious cent but it was a false alarm. visitors posted vid employees online. some had to leave belongings behind. authorities made 9 arrests in a raid on a terrorist ring and revealed the group was involved in a plot against the vatican part of a investigation. 9 other suspects are outstanding. three are believed to still be

[ indiscernible ] >> when it went out some professors moved class outside. they cut a power line. 34 buildings lost power. workers restored power after two hours by switching to another substation. a law that requires sex offenders to stay on a registry for life will stay on the books. it requires anyone convicted of non-forcible oral copulation with a minor to register with police as a sex offenders. all oral sex was illegal till 1975 when the state legalized it. investigators are working to identify a body that was discovered following a fire this morning in east palo alto

[ indiscernible ] >> two different stories. 2 investigates exposes concerns about a company prompting a statewide investigation. >> it didn't take long before ktvu's eric rasmussen saw questionable behavior and it left our team asking are you ripping us off. tell us what happened when you put this company to the test? >> reporter: we called best and fast garage door repair we witnessed the same concerns customers told us about. our repair man suggests repairs we didn't need and couldn't show us a license. and now investigators are looking at what we found. >> reporter: when 2 investigates called out best and fast garage door repair to a ktvu fox 2 news employee's house. we kept details to ourselves.

>> reporter: a disclaimer at the bottom of the website says all work is done by individually independent contractors. >> the laws is in place so the consumer know whose they are dealing with. if i need somebody to come out, i believe somebody from best and fast is coming out. >> reporter: it had us wondering who we were dealing with. >> not best and fast? >> yeah. >> reporter: a search of the owner's name turned up a facebook page with photos of someone who was a perfect match for daniel himself. >> reporter: later we got a call from someone who said he was with best and fast. said he was tom. if a customer has a problem he said they will get to the bottom of it. even though they are not required for a liceference jobs under $500 -- licenses for jobs

thousands of people matched in los angeles today to commemorate the anniversary of the armenian genocide. huge crowd marched six miles from a neighborhood to the turkish consulate. filling the streets. many carried signs and the armenian flag. it remembers the 1.5 million armenians killed in 1915. turkey denies the deaths constituted genocide. officials expressed regret at the loss of life but says it was casualties of war. muni announced new service to make it easier to use. this weekend muni plans to roll out new rapped route service. -- rapid route service. it will increase how often

a veteran police officer in san jose who is accused of running a marijuana operation was arraigned today. 44-year-old son vu was arrested last june. prosecutors say 12 pounds of marijuana was found in his storage unit. investigators found grow equipment and $5,700 in cash. he has been a san jose police officer for 21 years and authorities say he will remain on paid administrative leave till his case is over. right now he is still in jail on $100,000 bail. a few more details about the unexplained death of a man in the custody of baltimore police. protesters back in the streets today depanding answers and justice for freddie gray -- demanding answers and justice
