good evening everyone i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. several thousand people are packed into san francisco city hall tonight to mark the 100th anniversary of the armenian genocide. ken pritchett is live in the city and tells us those in attendance say it must be remembered to keep it from ever happening again, ken. >> reporter: behind me you can see city hall is lit up in the colors of the armenian flag. lieutenant governor gavin newsom are here to remember an event 100 year later that is still denied by some. a dance beneath the rotunda of city hall a dance inspired by a city with ties to thousands of bay area armenians today. >> most of people that live in this area are survivors of the

what we're seeing for right now is sprinkles but mostly drizzle. the rain is still to the north of us. you're seeing it move to the avenues of san francisco. that's actually rain right here. so the rain is starting to move on shore right at the western edges of town. santa rosa is getting some real rain now. as we move into the evening hours this system moves through. we're going to get some significant rainfall from this. we could see nearly a half inch of rain in fremont .2 to .3 in oakland. so a good little rain event headed our way. this is going to have an impact on your saturday. so when i come back we will lay that out for you and give you an idea of what you can expect as we move into your weekend. snow is falling in the sierra tonight and it is expected to last through the weekend. here's video now from earlier

today at donner summit. drivers are being warned to prepare for possible closures on interstate 80. three to 5-inches of snow is expected tonight with more snow in the forecast tomorrow. stay with the ktvu fox 2 weather team through the weekend. we will have you covered on air and online. now to a deadly police shooting in san francisco and a second version of what happened that emerged today. thousands of people marched tonight accusing the police chief of a cover up, deborah. >> reporter: frank, they want the chief to recant what he says happened on 43rd and fulsome almost two months ago to the day. a man charging at officers of running from them. depending on what you believe. >> sfpd, stop police brutality. >> reporter: this crowd group as it marched through the

mission. where perez lopez lived and died. >> we say fight back. >> reporter: and ending at the police station on valencia. the latest march of many demanding answers in the young immigrant's death. >> they shot him in the back of the head. >> reporter: an attorney for the perez lopez family has filed a civil rights lawsuit. and says his own investigation shows the carpenter was on the street not the sidewalk when shot and that an independent autopsy shows all six bullets came from behind. >> the suspect, the decided lunged at if officer. >> reporter: that justified the police chief when he talked to an angry crowd. >> the suspect lunged at one of the officers. >> reporter: he did have this knife his defendants admit but says he dropped it and had brandished it against a man

that he had been feuding with. >> and he told us he was even shocked that the officers shot lopez. >> based on the eyewitness accounts and the evidence that we're aware of in this case. this was an appropriate use of force by police officers. >> reporter: from guatemala, the young man's parents who depended on the money he sent home. >> this is the last thing they expected. >> reporter: the the coroner confirms the findings. protesters ended the march lying down in front of the police station to simulate death but they were not quiet for long. >> we're here today, right now to say that chief suhr you are a liar. you are a liar. >> reporter: the protesters left candles burning outside

the police station. friends of perez lopez say he would not have defied police. so probably did not know that the plain clothed officers were officers and ran. a woman who was shot by sonoma sheriffs died from her insomewhere -- from her injuries was identified today. she led deputies on a high speed chase late wednesday night. the chase started after police got a call about a car driving in reverse on highway 101 in windsor. after getting off the freeway, jenks got -- was ordered out of her car but she placed her car on reverse and police shot

her. many starbucks stores closed today because the cash registers did not work. this starbucks stayed open but it was cash only. other stores gave away free coffee. starbucks is now apologizing. some starbucks coffee customers tweeted pictures of their free drinks. although the outage cost starbucks a lot of money they also got a lot of free publicity. the contractor doing routine work at a substation cut a power line causing the outage. 34 buildings that cal lost power for a couple of hours. campus utility works were able to switch to another substation to restore power. now the the nba play offs and the golden gate warriors historic come back last night from 20 points town at the start of the fourth quarter. it's helping the boost play off

fever to new heights here in the bay area. jana katsuyama live this evening in walnut creek and the tells us the warrior's play off run is bringing a lot of new busy -- new business to local stores, restaurants and bars. >> reporter: the owner tells us they just got these signs today and they put them up all over the sports bar. she says the place was really loud last night. and they're getting ready, they're expecting a big turn out. fans are showing their true colors as the blue and gold are bringing the bay area together like never before. sports bars have been packed and bay area fans went wild with last night's thriller that propelled the golden state

warriors. >> that was amazing and the energy in here was amazing. vasquez and big wins are translating into big business for local bars and restaurants. at peet's coffee shop, fans celebrated with warriors ground. and for stores selling golden state warriors gear, they opened early. >> they all want the shoes, everything. >> that three at the end was something magical. >> reporter: michael tarta says he's been a fan since he was a boy and now he's sharing his pride with his children. >> i travel all over from work. they see me in warriors stuff or some kind of bay area logo and they automatically ask me about the warrior.

young at heart. ♪ forever young ♪ come remember that feeling. ♪ forever young ♪ come feel forever young. we heard the complaints of unsafe and unsanitary living conditions, now a ktvu investigation has sparked legal action on behalf of tenants in this 90 unit residential hotel. tonight a major new development the city of oakland has filed a lawsuit and it doesn't just accuse the imperian tower.

it blames management. the lawsuit is asking a judge to force a take over of that building. >> reporter: this week it was a leaky pipe and what a tenant suspects was sewage running down the wall. but it's just the latest of many problems at the imperian towers in downtown oakland exposed by 2 investigates. >> the piping still goes off. >> reporter: and they told us they were fixed now a different message from city hall. >> are you convinced at this point that that place is a habitable place to live? >> we are not. there's just some of the allegations in our complaint. i understand some have been fixed other have not been fixed maybe others are recurring. >> reporter: barbara parker is suing the owners of the

imperial on a list of probes going back to 2011 when if owner went to prison for trying to burn the apartments down. today libby schaaf sat down with me. we asked whether city inspectors are doing enough. >> it surprises me the varacity of the owner. >> reporter: schaaf says she wants to place the building in receivership. >> i can tell you some of these tenants are going to look at this and saying, what has taken so long. >> i believe that what we really need to be is be

proactive. it's intervene long before things get to this state. >> reporter: this lawsuit filed by the city also named that former owner singer. it alleges he still has some control of the hotel. singer insisted he has not in an e-mail to me. as for the tenants, the city hopes the lawsuit forces improvements at the hotel without having to shut it down so no one ends up on the street. eric eric rasmussen. if you have a tip for 2 investigates we would like you to e-mail it to us. sparks from a welding torch started a fire tonight at an auto repair garage in antioch. a witness took these pictures of the fire at tenth and l streets. officials say two workers tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher but it wasn't enough. it started at about 7:45 tonight. officials say sparks from a welding torch hit gasoline on the floor and the fire quickly spread. it took firefighters about 30

minutes to get it under control. crews are still on the scene to make sure it doesn't flair up again. uc berkeley says it has dismissed a coach for allegedly soliciting a prostitute. pierre ingram was cal's wide receiver's coach. prosecutors say he was arrested and accused of soliciting an undercover officer during a prostitution sting. the university initially put him on leave but announced he -- announced they are not going to renew his contract. the closure is to accommodate construction work between geary and post. ktvu's christien kafton tells us, traffic is restricted on six blocks of van neeys. >> reporter: for the second time in weeks, construction

crews tore up van neeys avenue. >> it's friday, we're going to expect traffic at the closures. >> reporter: the street was closed down completely to allow the work under the tunnel. >> it's always hard getting around the city. but it's really nice to have a new hospital coming in. >> reporter: drivers along the already congested corridor have to put up with a series of detours. >> if you're heading southbound, the main detour rout takes you to goth. if you're heading north we're sending traffic to franklin. >> reporter: places like tommy's joint were worried the last time they had to go through a closure. >> we were pleasantty surprised with a turn out. it just happened to be very nice that weekend even with the traffic. >> reporter: closures now will save time and make for a safer

crossing in the years to come but for now they're asking drivers to steer clear if they can. >> if you're actually traveling through san francisco what we would like to advise everybody is if you could find another rout through the city and not come to van nuys. if your plans don't require you to be here please be aware and we ask everybody to do that. >> this section of van nuys is set to be closed down sunday evening it'll be ready for the sunday morning commute. that is unless they open it up earlier. there's one more closure scheduled that is the weekend of september 6-7th labor day weekend. christien kafton, fox 2 news. now we're tracking drizzle out there. it'll turn to showers. it already is in some places in the peninsula. the heaviest rain now, you can see where the heaviest stuff is. as this slides through over the next few hour it is rain will begin. we have plenty of moisture out there now. we're getting reports out by

half-moon bay of showers. i'm getting a few reports of light showers. most of it has been drizzle. we're going to get some wet on the lawns. it's going to be around in the morning hours but it should burn off pretty quickly. santa rosa i would say that's moderate rain just east. north and east of rohenert park. that's 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, and as you get right down 4:00 a.m. you see the system kind of sliding out of here and then by 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. the system clears out. there's going to be some clouds out there but most of the wet weather will be gone. this is an overnight event. we'll come back and talk about your saturday. it'll be nice. most of the day will be cloudy

new at 10:00, a special event tonight at the ucsf medical center dedicated to its teenage patients. the hospital held a prom so the teens won't have to miss out. amber lee is live now at the mission bay campus where that prom is being held, amber. >> reporter: julie, the prom is just now coming to an end inside that medical center

behind me, lots of laughter, lots of smiles. the patients tell me they will remember for years to come. lots of preparation. no shortcuts when it comes to ensuring these teen patients get the full experience, this rite of passage. >> being able to forget for one night that i'm sick and that i'm recovering from a major surgery. it's amazing. >> reporter: getting their nails done, hair styled enabled these young people to escape the confines of their hospital rooms. >> it's definitely been tough. >> reporter: this 16-year-old says tonight's prom will help her cope from feeling left out because she won't be able to attend her prom going on tomorrow night. >> i told my mom i'm sick of being sick. >> i went through a state of paralysis where i couldn't move at all.

>> reporter: but tonight amy winkle can move and walked down the red carpet. as the teens joined by their family and friends made their way to the prom. members of the 49ers were invited. helping to create once in a lifetime memories. >> this is my senior year of high school and so, usually this would be my last prom and so i'm trying to make it count. >> reporter: a night for these patients to forget the pain of their illnesses and enjoy being who they are, teenagers. >> and all the movies, where teenagers find themselves and find their love, i feel i haven't gotten that but hopefully tonight will be something like that. >> reporter: this is the fifth year ucsf has posted prom but it's the first time held here at the mission bay campus. these teens tell me this event meant the world to them. >> you can see by the smiles on

their faces, if they can't go to the prom bring the prom to them. amber, thank you. the family in cupertino says they're going to spend some time together trying to figure out why his teen ran away. search teams fanned out around cupertino looking for him but turns out conner was on campus the entire time. he apparently hid under the bleachers and ate fruit off the trees. the family says that conner just walked in their home and is okay. the program putting injured veterans together with dogs and the task the humans need to master. >> library books thrown out. a practice that has people horrified. why is alameda county dumping tens of thousands of books.

caught on camera, library books removed from the stacks and thrown into dumpsters. as ktvu's mike mibach found out it comes at a time when the county officials have a moratorium on school disposals. >> reporter: public libraries where seeds of knowledge grow. >> for me it's easier to come to the library and checkbooks out instead of buy them. >> reporter: but dorothea dorenz says it's nothing like that. >> i am horrified that people who are supposed to be in charge of our legacy in knowledge don't care. >> reporter: fiction, nonfiction. the claim here is that thousands of them tossed off

the shelfs, being disposed without notifying the public. it was recorded by an anonymous employee outside the branch last month. >> we pay our taxes to buy those books. they're controlling our access by taking away older books from us. >> reporter: the president of the alameda board of supervisors scott hagerty tells us there's a moratorium on school disposals. >> it says nothing about public input. it says nothing about giving the public a say in what they want. >> reporter: fremont resident joan guerra says the public should probably not be involved. >> i think the library should know what books are popular or want to be read. >> reporter: alameda public library officials were not

available for comment. and the moratorium is being ignored based on the video she provided. she says she hopes these pages of knowledge no matter how old remain in the stacks. former president bill clinton is parting ways with a partnership. his departure comes a few weeks after hillary clinton's campaign stop. while there she slammed for profit school for putting so many students in debt. quick action by three police officers in san francisco helped save the life of a man who's door got stuck. it happened at a public housing unit in visitation valley earlier this month. officers found out the 75-year- old man unconscious with his neck stuck behind the front door and the door frame. fortunately they managed to free the man then revived him. >> i reached 30 to 40 and i

could feel this man's chest. he was breathing on his own and he came back to life. and it was an amazing feeling. >> reporter: the officers say they were just doing their jobs. the great news here is that the man is expected to make a full recovery. now to a program that helps injured veterans heal by connecting them with service dogs. tomorrow that program celebrating two years of helping those who served in the military. ktvu's azenith smith shows us now how the program works and the difference it's making. >> touch, touch. yes. >> reporter: this 1-1/2-year-old labrador retriever is working to become a help dog. >> in the last time i've been knowing luke, luke show med more control than i've known for a long time.

>> reporter: luke calls his dog his buddy. >> they help other vets, that means i'm helping another vet. >> reporter: luke is one of the retrievers at the veteran's administration. the program is run through the nonprofit warrior-canine connection. >> we have a number of veterans and military that are coming home from deployment. and what they need is they need support and when they're here in treatment, this is a way that we can give them this extra support. >> get some water. that's it. >> reporter: the dogs in their camouflage attire learn up to 90 different commands in two years. from tugging open the fridge door to getting water. to turning off light switches, to pulling a sock off someone's foot. these dogs are also put through basic agility courses to build their strength so they can help veterans in wheelchairs. michelle lynch is another trainer. a specialist who served in

a volcano in chile erupted: more eruptions are likely. take a look at that on wednesday there was a spectacular eruption. and it came without warning. this is time lapsed video of it. the ashes spread to neighboring argentina and now airlines are diverting flights away from it.

dragged to the van. six officers have been suspended in this case. the city of san francisco has agreed to pay $725,000 to settle a lawsuit against police chief greg suhr. former police department attorney kelly o'hare had filed a lawsuit. she claimed suhr fired her for exposing his mishandling of a case. the city attorney's office says it decided to settle because o'hare wasn't allowed to stay on her job to increase her retirement benefits as other fired workers had been allowed to do. the apple watch went on sale today. people who ordered their watch online weeks ago began receiving delivery today. you can't take one home, apple warned high demand may cause delays and shipment. the cost of the watch starts at

there's rain coming to the bay area but until we get a lot of rain california is going to need to conserve water. the problem is saving water alone may not get the job done. now, some are considering using rainwater to desalinate ocean water. tonight we look at a city

considering its options. >> just 100 miles up the coast is santa barbara. sometimes the rain doesn't come, sometimes for years. mayor schneider says it's desperate. santa barbara is almost out of water. >> mother nature is not telling us what her forecast is. so we need to plan assuming it's going to stay the way it is. and that's why we're doing everything we can to find water when we need it. >> dance circle. >> we've done that. we've had dancers do it on a regular basis. >> reporter: california's population has nearly tripled since 1960 but the amount of water has not. add to that the most severe drought in 1,000 years and you've got towns running dry. ground water disappearing,. >> did you shower today? >> a very short one today, yes. >> tomorrow? >> probably not. >> reporter: california on the verge of water starvation.

but you wouldn't know it walking around santa barbara. but then take a trip to lake tachuma and you see bad it really is. want to know how bad it is, i should be under water right now. you see the sea wall that's as high as it should go. the lake has lost 70 feet for 6 miles. >> reporter: joshua hagmar is the water czar for the city. >> we've basically run out of water in 2017 if we don't come up with new ways to bring water. >> completely run out of

water. >> yes. >> reporter: an idea was towing an iceburg from alaska, but they couldn't figure out how to get it out of the ocean and put it into the tap. it was shutdown after only six weeks of use after the miracle rains came. but today seeing how the mayor's rain dance is coming dry and there's no snow in the extended forecast. the city plans to spend $30 million to modernize it's moth ball facility. >> looks like chernobyl. >> it does. >> reporter: this treatment plant will be able to purify enough water for 100,000 showers. >> you're talking about drinking -- >> yeah, pool water. >> what?

really? >> what about swimming in it. >> sure. it's being done already. we're just, we're getting there. >> reporter: but when you build castles in the sand what choice do you really have? sea water. toilet water, it's going to take a ton of money and an open mind. >> i'm not showering in my poo water. and we're getting a little bit of water out there now. could see some rain, we're getting heavier rain in sebastapool. a lot of moisture in the air. probably heavy drizzle in alameda. i have rain report in kentfield. i have rain heavy rain west of town. the new system is moving on shore and that's good news. there's the current radar imagery, we'll come in a little tighter here and you see some rain now. san francisco probably just --

i haven't talked to anybody in the avenues but looks like this is more moderate rainfall. the system is going to be getting here. it will deliver much needed rainfall to gardens and trees and all sorts of things. the reservoirs will get a little bit. but the amount of rain we're expecting as you look at the heavy rain here in santa rosa. the amount we're expecting, really doesn't do much for the reservoirs. but it will do a lot for getting the pollens out of the air. just kind of washing things down and putting water on the lawns and on the plants. it's good for the birds that are nesting right now and it's an all around good thing. april showers always a good thing. in the mountains they're going to get snows five to 10-inches, maybe 12-inches in the higher elevations that's good news too. this isn't a quick mover. i showed you the forecast model showing you how quick it has been moving through. let's peak at the tomorrow model. the showers are already out of the area. and temperatures as the skies clear on saturday afternoon will get into the 70s out toward vacaville and fairfield.
