good morning we begin with breaking news out of the east bay part of interstate 880 shut down right now. after a fiery multicar crash. we are on the scene. fires set, stores looted and police attacked protested baltimore turned into chaos. >> is very heartbreaking. >> the protest as a response to the death of an african- american man who died earlier this month in an arrest. efforts are being taken to stop the violence. it's all next on ktvu morning onto. good morning, again we are following breaking news out of the east bay, a fiery sets are part of interstate 880 at this hour. you can see some of the wreckage there on our screen. we are out there on the scene. this happened just about an hour ago the freeway still a barrett very big mess. coming up in two minutes we have live team coverage on exactly what happened and what this means for your morning commute. boy, that's not good news to

start off the day. it is tuesday april 28, pam kirk. >> lots to talk about, i brian florez lets get your day started with weather traffic. steve is here, it's pretty warm yesterday. >> it was about 90 yesterday. amazing. >> amazing. >> i was in the city and it was nice in the city, too. >> it was 76. b mac that's my perfect temperature. >> temperature. >> i understand that. it is going to be much cooler today. the fog came roaring back. this week looks like 90s, 70s and ú90s by thursday. a lot of low clouds and place the delta breezes really kicked in. that is the key. yesterday was a little easterly and northerly breeze that's not there today it's mostly west. fiftys on the thames, low 50s for many but it's the breeze. because it's overcast oakland airport is calm that is a sure sign high pressure is losing its grip ever so slightly. this will come in and give us a big cooldown starting today and into tomorrow.

the fog returns, low clouds, cool and breezy much cooler coast and debate it will be windy at times it san pablo bay delta delta 50 50 -- 60s over by the coast 70s and holding onto a few '80s down a good ten . i know you're busy right out of the gate here. a. we here. we are following breaking news out of the east bay. a fiery multicar crash shut down part of interstate 880 on the open san leandro border it happened about just an hour ago and ktvu alex savidge is there live with the latest. >>reporter: good morning. a huge mess out here for early- morning commuters in the east bay. take a look behind us. northbound lanes, all of them of 880 are shut down this morning. this is just north of davis street here in san leandro. you can see traffic is simply at a standstill right now. as we push down here, you can see all those flashing lights.

those are the first responders dealing with this multicar crash. a chain reaction crash involving a total of seven cars. for some video from a short time ago. we understand one of those cars burst into flames this morning. we also do understand that at least one person had to be freed from a car. that was involved in this crash. had to be freed with the jaws of life by first responders. several people have been injured out here. we do understand, but the chp has not been able to tell us the severity of those injuries this morning. but again, the big concern this morning is the fact that this freeway, northbound lanes, all of the northbound lanes remained blocked because of this crash, and they will remain closed for quite some time we do understand south caltrans crews going to make its way out here to take a closer look of the freeway and see what kind of damage was done as a result of this crash. an alert in effect for this

area, and all the northbound lanes of 880 will remained shut down for sometime. obviously some time. obviously an area that you're going to want to avoid here early on this morning. >> alex, we are going to continue from where you left it off, thank you very much. we are going to continue watching this freeway. obviously it's a big deal to have perhaps one of the biggest freeways in the bay area shut down in one direction even. that's go to 880 in oakland and take a look at 880 northbound just up the road. you can see that no one is getting through. you can see some cars are driving by, maybe they're getting on and off ramps. just north ramps. just north of davis street. you can tell it's kind of empty, not much is happening. we will keep anwe'll keep an eye on that. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza and is light traffic, continues to look at as you drive through. also, we're looking at some other things. marin county southbound 101. but go back to the desk. the national guard is in maryland this morning as the governor there declares a state of emergency in response to violence and writing following

the funeral of an african- american man who died while in police custody. take a look at that. this car was seen driving recklessly in the street. and moments later, you see it drive through a pit a pit of fire. at least 15 police officers were injured, more than two dozen rioters were arrested during the chaos. the riots broke out shortly after the funeral of freddy gray. coming up at gray. coming up at about eight minutes we will have a live report from baltimore with the very latest. meantime here in the bay area bay area about 100 people marched through downtown oakland last night. they went to police headquarters to show solidarity with the protesters in baltimore. aside from a small fire and some blocked freeway entrances, police say the protest in oakland was mostly peaceful. final protesters cleared the street about 1:00 o'clock this morning. the death toll following

nepal's mouth massive earthquake continues to rise too at least 4400 people now dead. rescue workers still have not been able to reach some remote communities. that number could rise. hundreds of people gathered for mass cremation in nepal's capital today. to say goodbye to victims of the quake. flights of bringing and relief supplies, now creating major backups at the airport. and as aftershocks continue more help from the us is on the way. >> i am announcing that the united states will provide an additional $9 million for nepal earthquake response, and recovery efforts. >> a drone has captured new footage. you can see -- look at that, just how extensive the damage is. tens of thousands of people still camping out on the streets. either they can't go inside or they are afraid to. a un spokesman says 8 million people have been affected by the quake. more than 1.4 million people

are in need of food. the remaining 100 climbers stranded into camps on mount everest have been rescued. one man from sonoma county though concerned his son may have been at one of those camps and he is not heard from him. bob dickinson of petaluma says 21-year-old son spencer was in nepal when he last talked to him a week ago. the sun was headed up the mountain on a trekking route that takes about seven days. he has not heard from his son sense and he is getting very worried about his safety. >> at the very helpless feeling. there's absolutely nothing i can do. if i could jump on a plane and go there, and dig around for him i certainly would. >> dickinson says his son was traveling alone, and was not part of a group or a guide, so there's no organization keeping track of him. his family says the us department of state has now joined in the effort to try to find spencer. for americans were killed in the nepal quake so far, two people from california died in the avalanche outs at mount

with colorful packaging and fruit and candy flavors that kids love, who do you think tobacco companies are targeting? do we get to keep any? welcome back everybody time now is for 11 am. 4:11 a.m. this morning the us supreme court hears arguments that could lead to the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide. long lines began forming outside the court over the weekend by people hoping to witness with history. the justices are taking up kentucky michigan, ohio and tennessee four of the remaining 13 states that still outlaw same-sex marriages. many experts believe the court is ready to roll that it's unconstitutional to prohibit gay people from getting married. >> i think there's good reason

to take that position, and that's because the logic of the supreme courts gay-rights ruling has said very squarely, gays cannot be targeted, targeted, they cannot be stigmatized they cannot be subjected to special, unequal treatment. of their basic liberties cannot be denied. >> now, the court will decide two issues. should states be allowed to ban same-sex marriage? and will states recognize same- sex marriages from other states. today the justices are only hearing from attorneys that are they are not expected to issue a ruling until june. meantime, couple from california as part of the same- sex marriage challenge from tennessee before the supreme court. matthew and john moved from the bay area to tennessee about three years ago. with the law firm and sell works for relocated. they were married in california, but tennessee did not recognize their marriage. they say that made a living and tennessee uncomfortable for them. they have since moved back to california and are living in

orange county, but they remain part of the tennessee case. it's become a familiar scene. absolute chaos on the streets of baltimore maryland. you can see protesters, middle of the street, fires lit, others have smashed windows, and also set fires to businesses. and all of this has caused maryland to issue a state of emergency. reporter joe is live in baltimore with a look at how the national guard now becoming involved. >>reporter: pam, good morning, the national guard arriving early this morning we are expecting anywhere from 1500 to eventually 5,000 members promptly on the lower end of that range. right now, they are just sort of trickling into the city. city. we saw some humvees and some other militarized looking vehicles cruising through the city. i have to say behind the camera, which you can see, there's a main drag, it appears that people are just going to work like any sort of typical day, but of course after last night, it's anything but a typical morning.

here, in baltimore. at least 15 police officers were injured and more than two dozen rioters arrested during the chaos. it all erupted hours after the funeral for freddy gray. he died after his spine was nearly severed while in police custody. the exact circumstances of the injuries still unclear. gray's family condemned the violence monday night. >> ii want you guys to get justice for my son, but don't do it like this. >> to see that it's turned into all this violence and destruction i am really appalled appalled. >>reporter: rioters can be seen looting businesses, destroying the lease cars and setting buildings on fire. some claimed the violence as a result of decades of mistrust between police and the community. >> this is not about just freddy gray. i've watched so many of our people get killed. i'm tired of it. >>reporter: in additional to the national guard 500 state troopers from our -- states are headed to baltimore.

any weeklong daily curfew begins later tonight. all in an effort to stop the violence. >> we will bring order. it's very clear that i am not interested in exacerbating the situation, my goal is too bring calm. >>reporter: as the construction can't destruction continues their devastated by what's happening and want to work to change the city for the better. >> is very heartbreaking. we come to meet with the young people in the streets. >>reporter: more difficult news for an already fragmented city here in baltimore, baltimore, the police commissioner coming out and saying that they have a credible threat and evidence that rival gangs like the bloods and the crips, perhaps are coming together to work as one to try to take out police officers. >> that's pretty scary. thank you very much. live in baltimore. if you haven't seen this, this video has gone viral. a protester in maryland got into trouble with his mom.

after catching her son throwing rocks at police during the massive riots, she shows him his boss, you can see her yelling and punching him. pretty hard. and she eventually leaves the protest and says nope, you're heading home. stay with us here on ktvu and online for ktvu.com for the very latest. you can also follow us on twitter and facebook for updates around the clock. at dock workers at the port of oakland will not report to work on friday. international longshore and warehouse union says members will be joining a mayday march to protest police brutality. the union's contract with the pacific maritime association allows one work stoppage a month. so members can attend union meetings. the union says it will take the may stoppage tomorrow so workers can take part in the mayday march. a bart has called off its plan track closure in oakland this weekend because of the possibility of a warrior's home playoff game. bart is making repairs between the coliseum stations. the warriors will host a game sunday if the memphis grizzlies

beat the portland trail blazers tomorrow. that series goes to seven games, the second round won't begin until next tuesday. bart cap next plan closure will be the weekend of may 9, eventually when the repairs began buses shuttle riders between the stations. it is so very early for 16:00 a.m., but unfortunately a huge problem for the morning commute. 880 around oakland san leandro is shut down northbound. >> it is. because of this injury crash. it's unclear what happened, but we do know for sure that traffic is being diverted off the freeway northbound 8802 clearest through get onto 38 and use 580 instead. you cannot get through on northbound 880. it's unclear if the police are actually allowing big rigs to use 580, but i would imagine that they would because there's no other way to get around unless you can get off the freeway and use city

streets to get back on. northbound 880 near davis, right at the oakland -- san leandro border is closed. let's take a look at the video that was shot at the scene before they close the entire freeway down. it's a bad scene here. you can here, in this video, more emergency vehicles kept arriving. i want to show you on the map for this is. this is northbound 880 right near davis street. you can see the backup is already building all the way back to 238. thethe camera that we see his write up here. we have a camera near the coliseum, i can show it to you. you can see cars are not getting through, and it's going to be that way for a while. we will stay on it for you. the toll plaza it is light, no major problems getting through here. at 4:18 a.m. let's go to steve. thank you. yesterday, 90 in gilroy, 89 santa rosa, 89 conquered it was close for many, but many, but today -- i should say close to 88 or 89 for many, not today. that followed has come flying

demonstrators rallied at the offices of the san francisco archdiocese last night. catholic school teachers and their supporters are protesting the morality clause in the teacher's handbook issued by archbishop salvatore, the handbook says employees should affirm and believe that churches stand on homosexuality marriage, and abortion. teachers say they worry that it could be used to fire them. yesterday the archdiocese says it was prepared to make adjustments in the handbook's language to address the teachers concerns. the good news for teachers around california, cool districts around the state plan to hire 21,500 additional teachers in the upcoming school year that's according to the sacramento beat. that comes after years of layoffs or classroom reassignments for newer teachers.

temperatures sored to upper 80s to near 90. gilroy was 90. on this panel here we had almost 90. santa rosa 89. concord 89. 84 in san jose. look at redwood city that is a 16-degree drop. front coming in. as weak as it may be it doesn't matter. that is enhancing the fog. the colder water temps certainly help. delta breeze has decided to kick up its heels. that is a howling breeze at travis. when it's this kind of a pattern alook at travis all the time. hayward has a westerly breeze. i think you get the idea. on shore braze returns. it will be cooler, breezy, windy for a few. a lot of 70sin areas that were near 90 yesterday. 60s closer to the water.
