if you are driving to the toll plaza it looks good. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. there are several different protests being held in the bay area today for may day one of the largest rallies is expected to be at the port of oakland. tara moriarty is joining us now from the port where operations could grind to a halt. we know that everything is calm here right now. some of the trucks are just starting to arrive. so we will see if they are turned away. but around 9:00 things should start heating up. protestors who are not long shoreman have planned a rally and march to oakland city hall around 10:00 this morning. they will stage a labor rally at noon and then an antipolice

custody. police@tours have turn -- police investigators have turned over their findings. one injury indicates he was hit by a protruding bolt in the van. the driver also made an extra stop that had not been reported previously but investigators aren't revealing yet the nature of that stop.

now this is in philadelphia where there was a march in solidarity with the baltimore protest. it erupted in violence last night. demonstrators tried to block the entrance to a major philadelphia freeway and ended up clashing with the police as you can see here. the police tried to push the crowd back while some of the protestors were hurling bottles and other objects at the police. at least three people were arrested. that march by the way lasted more than six hours. the federal government has launched a new pilot program. the justice department says it will provide a total of $20 million across the u.s. to spend on cameras, training and technical assistance and attorney general loretta lynch said in a statement that the pilot program is a vital part

of efforts to promote public safety. record enup a load videos. it's called mobile justice. they are sent to the aclu and preserved. the california peace officers association has not commented on that app but in the past police advocates have expressed concern that people reporting officers might interfere with police work which is already an intense situation. san francisco's minimum wage goes up today from $11 to $12.25 an hour. in san francisco the minimum wage will keep rising every year until it reaches $15 an hour in 2018.

two very wealthily ucsf donors are supporting building a new warriors arena near the new mission bay medical center. sales for ceo mark and ron conway they tell the san francisco business times that the proposed warriors arena and business complex would improve the city. they are criticizing a group called the mission bay alliance that opposes this $18,000 seat arena project. the chronical reported earlier this week that the alliance is made up of a group of mainly anonymous wealthy usf donors. the father of a nine-year- old boy that was killed in discovery bay speaks out for the first time. >> his gorgeous smile would live on and we know joshty would want all of us to senile every day. >> coming up at 6:30 how he is

welcome back to mornings on 2. we're continuing to follow that breaking news out of san mateo. sky fox over head. the fire reported at an apartment complex. this is near 101. you can see some of the damage there. a little bit. there was a lot of smoke. no flames visible. there are also a lot of fire vehicles though you can see out front. we do have a crew on the way to that scene. we'll have the very latest developments as soon as they become available. now back to our may day actions that are taking place across the bay area today. one planned protest could impact your morning commute. alex savidge is at the mccarthur bart station with the demonstrations set to take place. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah the protests that could cause the most problems for

bart riders this morning is set to take place here at the mccarthur station in oakland where we are this morning. organizers are expecting that people will gather here at 7:30 or so. you can see things are quiet right now but they are expecting demonstrations to happen here. this is a demonstration against gentification here in the bay area. here's video. they are set to gather at 7:30 and essentially try to shut down the mccar think -- mccarthur station. protestors are set to target tech companies. this is are shuttle buses from google, facebook, and apple all stop at this mccarthur station. and protestors are planning to block those protests later this morning. bart says it plans to keep the station open during the commute and we will try to operate as normal. mccarthur is a busy transfer point for riders heading into the city and some people we have talked to said they would be finding another way to work.

anything new? >> we do have a reporter on the scene of the fire. we will go to brian in a moment. the traffic is actually moving along slowly here at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see traffic is moving along pretty well once you get on to the bridge. but at the toll plaza it's a 15- 20 minute delay. also we're looking at the commute here on interstate 880. the east bay commute has been much better than yesterday. the road sensors are not showing a lot of slow traffic. maybe a little bit on highway 242. that is about all. much better commute on highway 4. steve mentioned we are following breaking new this san mateo. forecasts responded to a fire. we almost forgot about 880.

fire responded to a fire. what is going on? as we take a look now this is one of the victims from one of the fire just being wheeled away from paramedics. this turned out to be a three alarm -- a two alarm fire with a third alarm as a precaution according to san mateo fire department who responded to this apartment fire rather quickly this morning. you can see one of the victim there is. as we go to video now. take a look at this damage. fire officials say it's still unclear how it started. the family that lives there it's a family of four that they saw fire from the kitchen area.

this fire started around 5:13. san mateo fire responded about five minutes later. again this got to two alarm but they wanted to do a three alarm just in case it spread but they were able to keep it to that one apartment complex. as we go to sky fox, still a heavy response. several residents. it looks like this fire is under control but this was a family of four that was displaced. but as we take you back here to the ground shot several responses out here from san mateo fire, san mateo police also here this morning. we will of course keep you updated throughout the mornings here. guys back to you. >> all right brian flores, thank you for the update. talk to you later. time is 6:34. since we went on the air at 4:00 a.m., we have been telling you and reminding you today is

cruising the streets looking to keep an eye on any of the demonstrations that may be happening this morning. and of course the mayor here in oakland is urging everyone who does protest to do so peacefully, dave. >> all right alex savidge, thank you for that update from bart station there. time is 6:37. separate protests are planned at the port of oakland. international long shore and warehouse union local 10 announced its members stopped working at 5:30 this morning. occupy oakland is also asking their supporters to meet at the port at 9:00 for an hour long rally and then they will march to frank ogawa plaza in downtown. another rally is set for noon. occupy oakland organizers say the demonstrations will call attention to violence involving police officers. hundreds of people expected to join a may day march in san francisco this afternoon. but that is is due to begin at 1:00 at civic center plaza. people from all over the bay area are expected there. some of the issues organizers

say they will protest will be immigration. >> jordan was stabbed while sleeping in his home saturday night. police say 18-year-old william schultz killed the little boy. they would not talk about what happened the family home will remain open. >> with jordi's memories in our hearts we will continue to offer our love and home to our family and friends and our children's friends as we know that is what jordi would have wanted us to do. >> the family says a public service for jordan is scheduled

for next friday in brentwood. schultz made his first court appearance earlier this week and entered a plea of not guilty. first responders are delivering emotional testimony in the aurora, colorado movie theater trial. one police officer described the devastating scene. >> i remember of course the one that i will always remember is the little girl i had to step over because i knew she was gone and continue on which is the hardest thing i had to do but going back on my training i had to save the ones i knew i could try and save. >> 12 people were killed. 70 others were injured in the attack of july of 2012. attorneys for james holmes admits he is the gunman but says he's not guilty by reason of insanity. our time is 6:39. a new report is due to come out today that many of americas

hospitals they are struggling financially especially in rural areas. the associated press report says more rural hospitals around the country closed in the last two years than in the previous decade. there have been 106 recent hospital closures. hundreds more are said to be vulnerable. here in california nine hospitals have closed since 2010. two of them in rural areas. ten more hospitals are considered to be financially challenged. after closing last year, one bay area hospital beat the odds. it's about to reopen with a new name and look. meet dr. robot. now he's going to be helping sebastopol former palm drive hospital keep their costs down when it reopens at sonoma medical center. the hospital will have all private rooms equipped for family sleepovers and room service from a hospital cafe. officials say it would not be

several may day actions are set for later this morning. and a lot of it is in oakland. oakland mayor libby schaaf is here to talk about it. thank you for coming in. we have a couple things we've been following. protestors at the port of oakland will march into frank ogawa plaza. so some things that have gone on in the past. precautions you have take nobody oakland to make sure that lessons learned from the past? >> absolutely. we are prepared. we are expecting a day of peaceful protests of people really trying to raise awareness of really important issues that are going on in this country and this world. but we are prepared and we have not only put our force out but we have coordinated with all of our partners, the chp, the bart police so that one we can try

to avoid any mishaps and we are prepared for anything. >> you said it's important to let people demonstrate. oakland has a history of encouraging free speech but you also sent a memo to city staff saying if the protests becomes unlawful, oakland police are prepared. what do you mean by that? >> well we are absolutely highway to facilitate the expression of free speech 37. oakland has a long history. but we will not tolerate destruction of property, harm to other people and so we are taking proactive steps to insure that the presence is such that that that will be discouraged. i've been many encouraged. many of the groups that are organizing these demonstrations themselves absolutely agree with that and they have sent a message to their organizations. we love this city. we want to keep it beautiful. we want it to be an attractive place and so we will behave appropriately. >> a lot of people do behave

appropriately. and they have very good intentions. oakland has a history of violence and vandalism even at a time when other cities berkeley and san francisco are holding demonstrations at the same time but they are not breaking windows and setting fires and blocking freeways. so why is oakland different? why has it been worse? >> i feel like that has changed a little bit lately. we have learned from our mistakes in the past. and we have really improved our tactics. we take a very strategic approach to managing the crowd control and in the last year our new chief has actually been called upon in national forums to give testimony about how oakland now does crowd control. because it is very effective. it is very thoughtful. it is smart. it is not as heavy handed as it is strategic. >> all right oakland mayor libby schaaf thank you so much for coming in. i know you have a busy day ahead to make sure that all

remains safe and we'll be following this all day and into the evening and weekend as well. dave. >> thank you. time is 6:48. let's check your commute right now. sal, what are you seeing at the toll plaza this >> we are looking at slow traffic at the toll plaza. it's a 15-20 minute delay get into san francisco. let's go to the toll plaza and start there. westbound traffic is going to be busy as you come into the city. and this commute has been steady and slow. we haven't seen a lot of slow traffic on the bridge itself but definitely some at the toll plaza. the east bay in general is better than it was yesterday. as we look at interstate 880 north and southbound in oakland. this looks pretty good. you don't have top necessarily rush out of the house right now because right now it looks good. probably stayed this way for a bit. i keep going back to this. contra costa county because of the commute yesterday being so bad. got so many complaints from people on 680 and highway 4. today it's a little slow here
