come feel forever young. a series of may day protests set to get underway around the bay area today. we'll tell you about the issues being highlighted and one protest that could impact the morning commute for some b.a.r.t riders. and keeping an eye out on

the problems as a result of the protests. and we are live in san mateo where a family of four is displaced after a three-alarm fire. some of the challenges that firefighters faced. we'll speak to some of the family members. 7:01 and we are live at the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station this morning where protesters, threatening to disrupt the morning commute. as you can see, there are no protest there yet. ktvu's alex savidge is keeping an eye on things and we'll keep an eye on this and other large demonstrations planned that could impact your day. good morning welcome to morning sun 2. it is friday, may 1st. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. interesting today, steve. >> i'm showing these social media -- a guy sent me a picture. the fog is flying.

>> wow. >> i tried to get up but not yet. there but not there if that makes sense. hot to warm inland but much cooler on the coast today. the fog is a very fickle thing. but it's making a turn past santa cruz -- or excuse me, past mon ray into santa cruz. that's a sign that's going to be cooler. there is the fog. not only is it coming up the coast but also going to get joined litter on. that will move into the coast later. i drop temps along the coast already >> it's going to be cooler. sfo west, hayward east, east- southeast sound, no delta breeze yet but when it's 49 to 52 degrees, that helps the fog and it's on its way. inland temps will be on the way. if you are by the coast, does not matter. gosh, it's freezing sunny,

warm, fog. breezy fog. too shallow to make much of a different inland. 60s now and 70s closer to the coast. again, a couple of issues here, sal, a wreck, one or two in. >> we do have -- a general statement would be that today is better than yesterday. but there are some slow spots out there. let's get right to them. bay bridge toll plaza, waiting 20 minutes to get to the spans. no major problems on the bridge. also looking at the commute on interstate 880, this is nice. usually, we don't see slow traffic on 880 until later in the morning but on fridays, it could stay this way. we are hoping for it, anyway. let's go to san jose and the south bay. northbound 101 is slow near the capitol expressway. you can tell by looking at these maps, if you are a regular silicon valley connector, you say, i'll take

this all day long. slow at 17 but that's about all. 7:03. back to the desk. >> thanks, sal. demonstrators are planning demonstrations in the bay area for may day. >> the issues go from workers' rights to police brutality. >> tara moriarty is live. but we go to alex savidge for possible disruptions to the morning commute. any signs of disruption yet? >> reporter: not yet. as we know, that is really busy station during the morning commute. busy transfer point for b.a.r.t. riders and there is a protest set to go underway. this could cause some problems for b.a.r.t. riders. they are threatening to essentially interrupt the morning commute here in the

station. organizers are calling on people to come out here to this station and disrupt the commute. this particular protest is meant to target tech companies, voicing opposition to gentrification here in the bay area. there are shuttle buses from google, facebook and apple that all come here to the mcarthur station and they stop to drop people off -- or pick people up, i should say, and take them down to the tech companies in the silicon valley. protesters are planning on blocking the tech shuttle buses. we talked to one b.a.r.t. rider a short time ago. he says that he supports the protests but he says they should not impact people's commute. >> you know, you can't disrupt the commute. i have to be on time to work. this is disrupting me getting to work on time. that's a big problem for me and a big problem for everybody else. >> reporter: and there will also be a series of marches and rallies throughout oakland, throughout the day. organizers are planning to

raise a variety of issues from workers' rights to police brutality to tie in with the recent demonstration that is we have seen -- demonstration that dell -- demonstrations that we have seen in the city of baltimore. police have extra patrols throughout the morning and extra patrols throughout the day to make sure that none of the protests gets out of hand and that there is no vandalism or anything of that nature. the situation here is that things were supposed to start at 7:30. we do understand that b.a.r.t. plans to keep the stations open and the trains running even with the demonstrations. >> we'll check back with you shortly. we'll continue with our coverage of the protests toyed. when you are away from your tv,

you can follow the situation by downloading our news app. and a fire in san mateo chased a family out of their home. it happened on silva street near highway 101. ryan flores is out there. you have been out there for a while and you talked to relatives of the fire victims? >> good morning to you. you will hear from that relative in just a moment. better here and laselva. this is the prado apartment complex. firefighters responded to what was a three-alarm fire. there is a heavy response to the fire. heavy smoke damage, as you can see. this is the apartment unit. downstairs and upstairs unit. apparently, four people were

living inside. there was a child living inside as well. they were able to escape all things, due to a smoke detector that went off. and firefighters responded quickly. the obvious concern is that the fire would spread. hear now from one of the relatives talking about how big this fire got and the damage that caused. >> basically killed the whole apartment. >> yes. >> the birds, fishes. still looking for the cat. >> the major problem was access to the building. our guys had to make a really long hose line to get to the fire quickly and get that knocked down. >> in terms of injuries, looks like one person was taken into an ambulance as a precautionary measurement she apparently had

singed around here mouth. she's okay. many residents were able to return home this morning. as we take a look live. san mateo crews are mopping up. the road us currently closed. you can see the medical crews wheeling out a stretcher. that's one of the fire victims right now. we are working on it right now, ma'am. she's doing okay. we'll speak to her in just a moment. fire crews able to do pretty quick work on this fire this mon. luckily, it spread but everyone is doing okay. back to you, guys >> okay, brian flores, thanks for the update. >> time is now 7:09. we are turk now to what's happening in baltimore which is still tense and on age, almost two weeks after the death in police custody of freddie gray. police investigators turned

their report to prosecutors. they determined that during his arrest, freddie gray suffered a serious head injury. one said that he was hit by a protruding bolt in that van. the driver made an extra stop that had not been previously reported but investigators are not telling us what that stop was for. and protocol was violated by not belting him in. or not giving him treatment. the investigation is not over yet. >> the baltimore police says that the curfew, working and police are gearing up for two big marches scheduled in baltimore this weekend. >> we received some new damage numbers from riots on monday. 15 buildings and more than 140

police cars were damaged and more than 150 officers were hurt. and in philadelphia, a march in solidarity with the baltimore protests which erupt neighborhood violence last night. demonstrators tried to block the entrance to a major freeway and ended up clashing with police. the police tried to push the crowd back. some of the protesters were throwing bottles and other object at the police. at least three people were arrested. that march lasted more than six hours. san jose police are warning that someone is impersonating a police officer. they know of two cases where someone claims to be sergeant mike harris calling residents. they said that the people missed a jury duty call. they are told to go to get gift

cards. police say there is no sergeant mike harris and they would never seek payment over the phone. >> that's the trend to get people to pay by prepaid card or gift cards. that's not legitimate. >> no. all around the bay area, cities are bracing for big may day protest. we have a crew keeping an eye out for any possible traffic disruptions. one of the biggest fights in boxing history is about to go down. mayweather versus pacquiao. we'll tell you how this matchup in vegas is spurring local business here and why it's striking a chord with the filipino community. good morning. as we look at the south bay commute, looks pretty good here as you drive on 280. a little slow traffic but not very deep on this slowdown. we'll explain, coming up. and lots of sunshine and warm conditions inland.

welcome back to mornings on 2 sales for ceo mark beniof throwing his support behind the new warriors arena near the ucsf campus. he is a big ucsf donor. he says that the business complex would greatly benefit the city. they are criticizing a group called the mission bay a alliance opposed to the 18,000 seat project. the chronicle report says that the group is made up of anonymous wealthy ucsf donors who are worried that the new arena could block access to the

this morning. >> stand by me is a song that if you played it, you probably know it. >> yeah. >> so that's sad news. but certainly had a good life there. >> good morning, everybody. let's go out and have a look at the commute now. we'll start on the south bay. we'll go right to it because, yesterday, we had a bad day hire as well. especially on highway 101. today is slow. i don't want to mislead you. you're going to see slow track. if you drive every day, toyed today is going to be a day of rest. 101 start-stop traffic as you drive past 280 interchange. it's going to take you a little less to go to work if you are on the schedule. taking a look at highway 101, northbound traffic 101 moving pretty well. no major problems here. warriors have a home stand.

san jose is warm. a lot of 50s. napa says 50s but this is kathy. napa valley chick is what she goes by on twitter. the balloons there on a beautiful, lots of balloons landing on this beautiful, warm, napa morning. it will be warming up but not as warm. 91 today. i think it will be about 85 today. the fog is just making an incredible move and water temps are very cold. not much of a breeze yet. i'm waiting on that. when it's 49 to 53, that's all it takes. warmer tells great. isolated thundershowers if you are heading out to tahoe, truckey. fog moving up the coast. they'll drop 15 to 20 degrees easy. everyone he is will drop overt weekend. sunny and warm. cooler by the coast as that fog moves up the coast. i think it will fill in around san francisco and marin as we head to about noon to 2:00.

yesterday, my condelences. this is a look at the bay bridge now and traffic at the toll plaza is still backed up. about a 15 to 20 minute delay as you make it on to the span. we did have some slow traffic last time on highway 4. 580 definitely lighter than usual. slow in parts of livermore but nothing like we normally see. 60 from pleasanton to the calaveras area. not bad at all. back to the desk. demonstrators are planning a series of actions all over the bay area because it is may day. >> these rallies have different messages behind them. we have live team coverage of the various demonstrations this morning. alex savidge is keeping an eye on the protest aiming to disrupt the commute. but we start with tara moriarty with a big protest planned at the port of oakland. tara?

we have a temporary technical problem with tara. we'll get back with her at the port of oakland in just a little bit. time is 7:35. hundreds of people are expected to join a may day march in san francisco this afternoon. that event is to begin at 1:00. people from all over the bay area are expected to be there. some of the issues that organizers say they'll protest will be immigrant deportation, police violence and also military aggression. may day has been around for centuries. it's a traditional spring holiday for many cultures. in the late 19th century. may day was chosen as the international workers day observed by communists and socialists. may 1st, 1886 more than 300 works and thousands of businesses all across america walked off their jobs. it was the first may day workers celebration. >> right now, we want to go back to ktvu fox news tara

moriarty at the port of oakland where protests are expected today. tara? >> reporter: yes, sorry about that little technical difficulty. but word got out early about this protest. there are no long shoremen here. this is a virtual ghost town. we have seen a couple of kraig of cranes moving. protests will stage a rally and march to oakland city hall. a rally is planned at the frank plaza. we talked to a few long shoremen about what it means to them. >> police brutality. our objective is not to make a statement that all police are bad and all police departments are bad. what we are basically trying to do is put the focus on what really needs to -- the attention need to be set on and

shooting trial. one police officer described a devastating scene. >> i remember, of course, the one the one that i will always remember is the little girl. i had to step over her because i knew she was gone and continue on. that's the hardest thing i had to do, but going back on my training, i had to try to save those that i knew i could try and save. >> reporter: 12 people were killed and 70 others injured in the attack in july of 2012. attorneys for james holmes admit he is the gunman but say he is not guilty by reason of in sanity. prosecutors say that holmes knew what he was doing. despite spending millions of dollars, the list of mentally ill and convicted felons who own guns remains long. the chronicle reports that more than 16,000 people are on the list of those who are not

supposed to legally possess firearms in california. in 2013, the state launched a 24 million program to confiscate those weapons. so far, more than $99 million has been spent and the list of illegal gun owners has been reduced by about 17%. time now is 7:39. a new report is due out that says that many of america's hospitals are struggling financially, especially in rural areas. according to the associated press, more rural hospitals around the country closed in the last two years than in the previous decade. there have been 106 recent hospital closures. hundreds more are said to be vulnerable. here in california, nine hospitals have closed since 2010, two of them in rural areas. 10 more hospitals are considered to be financially challenged. after the closing last year, one bay area hospital has beaten the odds. it's about to reopen with a new name and a new look. now, meet dr. robot.

he will be helping sebastopol's former palm hospital keep its costs down when it reopens at sonoma medical center. the hospital will private rooms, equipped for family sleepovers and room service from a hospital cafi. officials say this would not be possible without the help of a community that donated money to bring the hospital back to life. >> you could not do this in small town iowa or small town texas. the advantages that we have in wesson ma county, we have world class doctors right here in this community. >> the hospital shut down last year because of money problems but officials predict with their new business motto, in one year, they'll break even. they say that unwith the biggest selling points for this hospital will be emergency room wait times which will average about five minutes. that compares to an hour at nearby hospitals.

7:40. we are following developing news in the south pacific. the papua new guinea area has been hit with a second large earthquake. the latest quick, a magnitude 6.8 according to the usgs struck about an hour ago in the new britain area. this followed the quick last night. it did not trigger a tsunami warping and no damage or injuries have been reported. we are hearing that about 1000 europeans europeans in nepal have not reached out to their embassies since the earthquake. and not everybody unaccounted for are tourists. most embassies say that it's hard to reach out to tourists because they do not reach out to their embassies. and the latest victim to be pulled alive is a 20-year-old woman pulled from the rubble of a hotel. >> there was another body above

her that kind of blocked the walls and the roof from collapsing and created some kind of air pocket that enabled her to breathe. >> the woman survived more than 130 hours without food or water. she's now being treated in a field hospital operated by the israeli military the head of the humanitarian affairs for the united nations arrived in nepal. she will visit the victims and tour the damage first hand. you can find the latest stories as well as information on how you can help the victims of nepal on ktvu.com. a san mateo apartment complex evacuated following an early apartment fire. in 22 minutes, the damage and what neighbors saw that could point to a possible cause. we will not tolerate destruction of property, harm to other people. >> ktvu fox news pam cook sat down with oakland's mayor this morning.

good morning. it's 7:45. today is may day and that means that there could be some protests. in fact, some are planned at this b.a.r.t. station, the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station which is an important hub for b.a.r.t. operations as you may know. we have a crew there and we are watching the trains. so far, no major delays but we'll let you stay on top of it oakland has said is it prepared to deal with today's may day planned demonstrations. pam cook sat down with the mayor right pe beginning of her day about an hour ago. she joins us now with what the mayor had to say. she has some specific plans to deal with that, pam? >> reporter: yes, she does. it is going to be a busy day for the mayor of oakland. we have been talking about this

morning protesters plan to meet at the board of oakland, will march to frank ogazawa plaza. oakland has a history of vandalism and violence when other city protesters are not breaking window, setting fires, closing freeways. i asked the mayor about that. she says that has changed and oakland has learned from the past. >> oakland has a long history of socialingactivism. we will not tolerate breaking and van taggism. >> reporter: she says she will have a response. we'll keep an eye on the protests all day especially as we get into the evening hours

because that's when things got out of control in the past. >> there have been destructions on b.a.r.t. and the freeways and entrances. a lot of things to keep an eye on this morning. >> it's early. >> yep. time is 7:47. time to check in with sal. you are watching the bridges as well as the roads? >> reporter: that's right. we are looking at a commute that is generally lighter than yesterday. we still have some slow traffic. we'll start off with a look at the san mateo bridge. looks like it's jammed right now, heading out to the high- rise. it's been slow for the last few minutes and stays slow all the way across. not a huge accident or anything but you should expect slow track on the way. also looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, still a backup. once you get on to the bridge, it does look good. we do have better than usual traffic. we also have some slow traffic building on interstate 880 right near 990, beginning to

slow and stay that is way down through the middle part of fremont. does get better by the time you reach mall pitas. >> let's go to steve. >> the fog is about to move right along the san mateo coast. if you are there, it's still warm. not feeling any breeze but believe me, it's on the way. everyone was in the 20 toz near 90 degrees yesterday. not a huge spread. today, there will be be. santa cruz was 90 something. probably about 30 degrees cooler today. the fog is already there. 50s, 60s, half moon bay already 58 but that will change pretty quick. fog making a move. hard to see but it is moving up the coast and only a matter of time before it makes that turn and moving sunrisism . water temps are very, very cold.

is being investigated. it happened at los angeles international airport about 12:30 this morning outside of a terminal. a man was stabbed as he was picking up a family member. he was stabbed several times he is in the hospital listed in stable condition. the suspected attacker was arrested a short time later there at l.a.x. he is identified as a 33-year- old man from hollywood. the motive is not known yet. airport operations were not affected. president obama announced yesterday that major book publishers will give more than $250 million in free e book to low income students. there was a lighthearted moment as the president talked to students about the importance of reading and writing. >> even the best writers usually, it's not that good the first time they write it. >> yeah. i think you sort of covered everything about that question. >> you think i -- he thinks that i've been talking too long? >> no no. >> let's move it along.

know that's a problem for everybody else. >> reporter: this is part of a series of protests and demonstrations planned here in oakland throughout the day today. organizers planning to raise a variety of issues from workers' rights to police brutality to tie in with the demonstration that is -- demonstrations that have been taking place in the city of baltimore. here, the police have been prepared. they are planning to put additional patrols making sure that they get to the protest areas. again, the plan is to disrupt employees being picked up by shuttle buses. those are being real estate routed. we understand they are picking up employees from a different location. >> we'll check back later. >> the portland of oakland would normally be full of activities at this time of the

day. in this live picture, you can see what looks like a couple of officers there, a few trucks moving around but the port really is fairly quiet, much more quiet than it normally is. that's because long shoremen are not working today. instead, on this may day, they're going to hold a morning long rally against police brutality. they scheduled a demonstration at the port about an hour from now be a an afterwards, they'll march to oakland city hall at 10:00. ktvu's fox 2 tara moriarty is at the port and will have a live report at 8:30. and we'll have a coverage of may day. you can use the ktvu news10 to watch. time is now 80:00 of. we have breaking news coming out of baltimore, maryland. almost two weeks after the death in police custody of freddie gray, just 30 minutes ago, the maryland state attorney announced they are now

calling the freddie gray case a homicide. they say that prosecutors will file charges against six baltimore police officers. charges that include second degree murder against one police officer. the prosecutors say that the original arrest of freddie gray was illegal. they say a knife and not a switch blade was found clipped to fretty gray's pants pockets and that that knife was legal. police investigators will turn over their findings to a prosecutor. they say that during the arrest, freddie gray suffered a serious head injury inside a prisoner van that was taking him to jail. [ chanting ] >> this was march in philadelphia in solidarity with the protests in baltimore that erupted in violence last night. look at the pictures. demonstrators are trying to block the entrance to a major freeway and they clashed with the police. the police attempted to push

the crowd back while some of the protesters hurled bottles and other objects at the police. at least three people were arrested. this particular march lasted more than six hours. 8:07. here in california, the machine civil liberties union launched a new app that allows people to record and upload cell phone videos of possible police misconduct called mobile justice. the recorded videos are sent to the aclu and preserved even if the phone is destroyed. the california police officers association has not commented on the app but, in the past, police advocates have expressed concerns that people recording officers might interfere with police work in an already tense situation. san jose police are warning that somebody may be impersonating a police officer. they know of two cases where someone claiming to sergeant

birds and she please they died in that apartment fire. fire crews continue mopping up this fire that started after 5:15 this morning and they are continuing their investigation into how this fire started. as we go down to video, this was a picture taken by a person who lives here where the fire start. she snapped this picture. you can see the plames went well higher than the roof. she snapped this picture as she was evacuating. there is heavy damage inside one of the units. the fire started just before 5:15 this morning. firefighters from san mateo and foster city respond. luckily, no other structure was damaged and nobody was hurt although we did see a couple of peopleevaluated at the scene. we talked to the daughter of the people who live at the apartment building. >> everybody is good. i checked mom. she had soot around the mouth but she is fine.
